  • Oyo arraigns man over chieftaincy tussle

The Oyo State Government yesterday arraigned Alhaji Ganiyu Ajiboye at a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Oyo town for “unlawfully parading” himself as the Alago of Ago-Oja.

Five charges were preferred against the accused in two charge sheets.

The first charge sheet prepared by the police accused Ajiboye of conducting himself in a manner likely to breach the peace, and disobeying a court order that restrained him from parading himself as the Alago of Ago-Oja.

The other charge sheet, signed by Mr. Olumide Ojo, a Senior Legal Officer in the Ministry of Justice, on behalf of the State Director of Public Prosecution accused Ajiboye of conspiracy and conduct likely to breach the peace.

Ajiboye’s counsel Mr. Biodun Abduraheem urged the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms.

Abduraheem said since last June when the offence was allegedly committed, it had not been repeated.

He said the subject with commission for which the accused is charged is still before an appellate court and the briefs had been pasted by all the parties.

Abdulraheem said the matter would be heard on February 27.

The Chief Magistrate, Jejeomo Ogunbona, advised the defence counsel to defer his arguments on pending litigations till the hearing begins and concentrate on the bail application.

Prosecution counsel Kayode Babalola, a Senior Legal Officer, told the court to use its discretion in the matter.

On the first charges, Chief Magistrate Ogunbona granted Ajiboye N100,000 bail and two sureties in like sum.

One of the sureties must be a serving state or federal lawmaker.

On the second charges, the Chief Magistrate granted him N50,000 bail and a surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned till February 20.

As at press time, the accused was yet to meet the bail conditions for the first charges.

The implication, according to a lawyer, is that the accused would be taken to the prison, pending compliance with the bail conditions.
