  • Police arrest 10 in Delta

A man has died in a bloody clash between two rival cult groups in Delta State.

Victor Odoye was allegedly killed in Okwagbe, Ughelli South Local Government Area.

The victim, it was learnt, died after being caught in a cross fire during a clash by the warring groups.

The victim’s remains were discovered in a bush near the St. Vincent College, Okwagbe.

It was gathered that the suspected cult members were brandishing dangerous weapons before security agents were alerted.

Police spokesman Famous Ajieh, who confirmed the death of the victim, said his men working with the local vigilance group arrested 10 suspects.

Ajieh said the body has been deposited at a morgue in the area, adding that two daggers were recovered.

Ajieh said the age of those arrested are between 18 and 27 years.

He said the police were on the trail of one of the leaders of the cult groups, simply identified as Solomon, said to be an ex-militant.

Also, the Delta Police said it has intensified investigation into the alleged self kidnap of a 63-year-old mother, Kate Emienor and her 22-year-old son, Obehi.

Obehi, it was learnt, conspired with his mother to arrange her abduction in order to extort money from her son, who resides abroad.

The duo, who reside in Benin City, Edo State, were said to have relocated to their hideout in Ogwashi-Uku , Aniocha South Local Government.

They called her son, demanding N20 million ransom.

The duo, it was gathered, reduced the ransom to N10 million after 10 days of negotiation.

However, the police acting on a tip-off swung into action arresting both suspects.

  • Kuku: I’m not involved in Boyloaf’s arrest

The Presidential Amnesty Office has debunked claims that its Chairman, Kingsley Kuku, was involved in the arrest and detention of ex-militant leader, Ebikabowei Victor-Ben (alias Boyloaf).

A statement in Abuja by the Amnesty Office’s Head of Media and Communications, Daniel Alabrah, said the incident that led to the arrest was misrepresented in some reports.

The reports alleged that Kuku was involved in an altercation at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.

“The fact is that Kuku was nowhere near the airport at the time his Special Assistant (Special Duties), Henry Ugbolue, was attacked by Boyloaf and two others, which led to their arrest and detention by the police.

“For purposes of clarity, the unprovoked assault on Ugbolue had nothing to do with Kuku or the amnesty programme.

“The facts about the incident have been documented by the police at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, where Boyloaf signed an undertaking before he was released.”

  • Police arrest 18 over Fulani, Gwari clash

Eighteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the clash between Fulani and Gwari communities in Gwako Village, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the police have said.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Aderenle Shinaba, announced the arrests in Abuja yesterday.

Shinaba is also the Chairman of the committee constituted by the FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, to investigate the cause of the clash in which two persons died and seven were injured.

Also, 27 Fulani settlements were razed in the clash, leading to the victims taking refuge at the University of Abuja.

“Investigations have commenced into the clash and this is part of the resolutions the committee will come up with, how they were able to procure their bows and arrows, cutlasses, guns and other weapons.

“The real situation, as I speak, is that peace has been restored in Gwako community. The area is very calm. Normalcy has been restored.

“What we are trying to do is to investigate the causes of the clash and that is why the FCT minister inaugurated an 11-man committee,” he said.

Shinaba said the committee, which has one week to submit its report, was gathering information by listening to Gwari and Fulani representatives.

According to him, the information gathering is to enable the committee to invesigate the matter and recommend measures to forestall a recurrence.

“Part of our mandate is to see how they will be resettled. If you look at where they were, that is the place the Fulani can actually live because there is enough land for grazing.

“We were at the affected communities yesterday. We met the people, saw the damage done and we are thinking of how to resettle them,” Shinaba said.

  • MASSOB decries alleged arrest, killing of members

•Urges security agents to release detained members

THE Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday condemned what it called the unwarranted and insensitive clampdown, arrest and killing of its members in Onitsha by security agents.

The group urged them to release its members who it said were allegedly being detained by security operatives, especially the Army and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

It accused the Anambra Vigilance Services, which operates at the Onitsha Main Market, of conniving with the security agencies.

MASSOB’s Director of Information, Comrade Uchenna Madu, yesterday sent a statement to reporters.

The statement reads: “On December 7, 2012, some MASSOB members, numbering about 120, were on a peaceful procession on Sokoto Road, Onitsha, in readiness for the burial of Uchechukwu Ejiofor, a MASSOB member who was shot by soldiers on November 12, when they were attacked by men of the Anambra State Vigilance Services.

“Despite the intervention of some MASSOB officers on ground to stop the men of the vigilance service, numbering about 50, they insisted that the MASSOB funeral procession should not hold and subsequently called the Army, SARS operatives and policemen from Onitsha Central Police Station (CPS).

“This callous attack on armless MASSOB activists led to the death of Eric Nwachukwu, who was a MASSOB member, an expectant woman and two hawkers.

“Also, eight MASSOB members were arrested with gunshot wounds and broken legs. Other MASSOB members – Basil Ogbu, Ebuka Eze, Obinna Offor and others – were abandoned at Anambra State SARS headquarters, Awkuzu, since December 7.

“Their broken legs are decaying and smelling because the police refused to feed them and give them medication. MASSOB demands their immediate release for proper medical attention or arraignment in a competent court of law.

“The acts of insensitivity and callousness of our Igbo brothers in the name vigilance groups are still going on. They continue to haunt for our members, secretly arresting some in their homes, shops and places of businesses, like truck pushers, Okada riders and load carriers at Onitsha Main Market.

“They not only arrest them, but also hand them over to the soldiers at Onitsha Barracks. After some deadly and traumatic torture, they were transferred to SARS headquarters, Akwuzu.

“We fear many are already dead. By our calculation, 27 motorcycles, four trucks, 14 wheel barrows and about N78,000 belonging to arrested MASSOB members were seized by the vigilance group.

“We appeal to President Goodluck Jonathan, the Chief of Army Staff, President Obama Barack of the United States and human rights organisations to intervene on our behalf in Anambra State.”

“This committee has been patient to give him a fair hearing. Members of the committee have resolved to ask the IGP to arrest and bring him here tomorrow (today) by 11 am. Maina has to respect the law.”

A member of the committee wanted to know why Maina has refused to honour the committee’s invitation.

Gaya said Maina is the only person who can explain why he has continued to shun the committee’s invitation.

Before he called off the meeting, Etok said: “We want to give Maina a fair hearing, but he has refused to take the opportunity.

“Even the body Maina is working for deserves to know what he is doing. This is about the fifth sitting of this committee, he has refused to come.

“We want to exercise the power conferred on us by Section 89 of the Constitution to issue a warrant of arrest on Maina.

“We have given the warrant to the Senate President to sign so that the IGP will arrest and bring him here tomorrow (today).”

  • Reps plan ‘arrest’ of Sanusi, 14 others

Reps plan ‘arrest’ of Sanusi, 14 others

The House of Representatives has begun the process of issuing a bench warrant for the arrest of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

The impending ‘arrest’ of Sanusi followed his refusal to honour several invitations to a public hearing on remittances of revenues by agencies of the government organised by the House Committee on Finance last week.

Others to be ‘arrested’ are the Chief Executives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Others are the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and National Pension Commission (PenCom).

The resolution of the House followed the adoption of a motion by the Chairman, Committee on Finance, Abdulmumin Jibrin, who under a matter of urgent public importance requested the mandate of the committee to issue the bench warrant for the affected chief executives for non-appearance.

Sixty agencies were invited, but 15 failed to appear before the committee despite several official invitations.

Jubrin noted that the case of Sanusi was peculiar as he was seen at a conference on the day, the fourth invitation, where he was speaking about the need to sack half of the Federal Government workforce.

The Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, rather than put to vote the prayer of the motion, guided the House on the procedure for the issuance of a bench warrant of arrest.

He said Section 89 of the constitution empowers committees of the House to summon any person in the country to attend the committee, but that procedure should be followed by the committee.

“So the procedure is that first, go and put down the request with the office of the Speaker, and I will oblige you,” the Speaker said.

At press time, it was learnt the committee had written to the office of the Speaker on the matter.

An online journalist and former moderator of a facebook group: The Kogi Political Platform, Odaudu Joel Minister, was allegedly beaten up like a “notorious criminal” by the police.

According to a source, his ordeal followed earlier calls from Fatima Abdullahi (née-Wada) allegedly “threatening the online journalist to either stop reporting stories on her father or risk arrest, detention and total annihilation”.

The journalist was arrested in his home in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area, at 12.30am yesterday.

The source said: “All I can say for now is that no arms were found in the possession of Mr. Minister when he was arrested.”

According to a police source, Minister was arrested in connection with a comment he posted on facebook about Governor Idris Wada on the crisis rocking the House of Assembly.

The post was said to have exposed a secret meeting at the Governors’ Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, between Wada and Yakubu Yunusa, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, representing Ofu Constituency on November 5.

Yunusa is a member of the 13-anti impeachment lawmakers.

A lawyer, Idris Kabir, described the arrest as an abuse of power.

He said: “Let me place on record that what happened to this man is indefensible.

A media consultant from the state, Phrank Shaibu, described the arrest and the ill-treatment of Minister as “unlawful, barbaric, cruel, brutal, evil, vicious, wicked, vindictive and reckless”.

He said: “I want to say with all sense of modesty and responsibility that the way Mr Minister was treated by the police is unlawful, barbaric, cruel, brutal, evil, vicious, wicked, vindictive and reckless.”

Minister said, last night, a sister to Wada, “Habibat Wada, brought thugs to my house. But when she saw that I was calling the police, she ran to the station and brought policemen to arrest me and my wife.

“The police shot twice into the air before they arrested me and my wife, who did not know anything about my online activities. The police arrested us at 12.30am and released us at about 2.30pm.

“She asked me to sign an undertaking that I will delete The Kogi Political Platform from the facebook because, according to her, it is being used to vilify Wada.

“Habibat also told me that if I do not delete it, my wife, who is a 300-Level student of History and International Studies in the Kogi State University, will not graduate.”

The Special Assistant (Media) to the Governor, Jacob Edi, said Wada had no hand in the journalist’s ordeal.

  • Secession: Igbo youths call for arrest of Northeast leaders

A group, the World Igbo Youths Council (WIYC), has urged the Federal Government to arrest the conveners of the North East Development (NED) for allegedly calling for the secession of the zone from Nigeria.

The group said the call should be seen as a treasonable felony.

In a statement by its Chairman, Board of Trustees, Comrade Chuks Ibegbu, WIYC said the call, when Boko Haram was attempting to dismember Nigeria, showed that some highly placed Nigerians were sponsoring the militant group.

It said: “No part of Nigeria must be allowed to secede. Nigeria has come to stay. We shall all stay here and salvage Nigeria.

“The Federal Government must, therefore, take steps to apprehend those calling for secession and prosecute them for high treason. They have committed the same offence for which the Movement for the Actualisation of the State of Biafra (MASSOB) is being hounded around since 2000.

In fact, their (NED’s) offence is worse because government officials and political actors from the North East attended the occasion where the call was made.”
