NURTW chief hails police for arrest of suspected killers

Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has praised the police for arresting those believed to be behind the killing of some of its members.

Its Chairman, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, in a statement spoke on the parade of his  predecessor, Rafiu Akanni Olohunwa and Ade Lawyer by the police in connection with the killing of Ganiyu Ayinla (a.k.a. Piero) at Idumota.

He thanked the police for doing their job, urging them  not to relent in their efforts to get to the root of the case. Agbede implored the police to ensure that those at large are also caught.

According to him, Olohunwa had been expelled from the union following series of unlawful activities traced to him in the past.

“You see, Olohunwa and some others got into our union through the back door, but after some time, their mission to cause confusion in the union was exposed and he was expelled from the union. His plans and that of his friends were to create tension and to force the state government to descend on the union.  We thank God that their mission has been exposed. We appeal to the Inspector-General of Police to go after all those suspended to be involved in the killing of our people. Police should help us get to the root of the matter. Our election is coming up next year and these people if allowed to remain in our midst would continue to cause more havoc,” he said.

  • ‘Fed Govt should arrest, prosecute Waney’s sponsors’

‘Fed Govt should arrest, prosecute Waney’s sponsors’

Stakeholders in Rivers State have urged the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute sponsors of the late notorious terrorist, Chief Johnson Igwedibia aka ‘General’ Don Waney and other criminals.

They said this would act as a deterrent to others.

The stakeholders alleged that Governor Nyesom Wike’s ambition had changed the peaceful ambience of the state, especially Orashi region, to daily bloodletting.

The stakeholders, under the aegis of Civil Society Groups in Orashi Region and Orashi National Congress (ONC), spoke yesterday at a news conference at Civic Centre in Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA).

The conference, addressed by the President of ONC, Emeni Ibe, was attended by the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Prof. Henry Ugboma, an indigene of Ndoni in ONELGA; another stakeholder from Ndoni, Chief Henry Odili; monarchs; leaders and other personalities.

The stakeholders accused Wike, Rivers State Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah, an indigene of Omoku and another PDP chieftain from ONELGA, Chief Elemchukwu Ogbowu, as some of the sponsors of Igwedibia.

The Rivers governor, who was in Omoku on Tuesday to commiserate with the bereaved families, however, denied sponsoring Igwedibia and others.

He accused Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and other chieftains of All Progressives Congress (APC) as being behind insecurity in Rivers.

Rivers APC Publicity Secretary Chief Chris Finebone described the allegation “as a lie from the pit of hell.”

Obuah, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Pastor Jerry Needam, described the allegation of sponsoring Igwedibia as untrue and frivolous.

Ogbowu admitted that he and the terrorist (Igwedibia) were from the same Aligwu community in ONELGA, but he never sponsored him and others.

Ibe said: “The genocide and terrorism in Orashi region are highly condemnable, hence the perpetrators and sponsors should be brought to book. Security in Orashi should be improved to rid the area of criminals roaming and terrorising people.

“There is suspicion that security agencies and operatives in Orashi may have compromised, hence their roles should be investigated. The multinational oil companies in Orashi should desist from patronising criminals in their exploration and exploitation activities.

“The Federal Government, international community, donor agencies and humanitarian agencies should attend to the needs of the victims. We enjoin youths to toe the path of peace and shun crimes and vices.

“In view of the strategic economic contribution of Orashi region, the Federal Government should embark on people-oriented programmes that will ameliorate the suffering of the people and create employment for our youths.”

Police arrest man for ‘slashing’ girl-friend’s throat

The Katsina State Police Command said it has arrested a 23-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, for slashng the throat of his girl friend, Aisha Dikkom.

The police also said a 15-year-old housewife, Daushiya Abdullahi, was arrested for allegedly killing her husband and another through food poison.

Commissioner of Police Mr Benson Gwana addressed reporters on Saturday in Katsina.

Gwana said Musa confessed, saying the girl was planning to jilt him and marry another person.

According to him, the suspect told the police that he cut the throat of the victim with intent to kill her.

“The accused took his girl-friend on a motorbike to a bush in Kurfi Local Government Area from Charanchi Local Government Area where they were living on December 21.

‘’He used a sharp knife to cut her throat at Tamowa Village in Kurfi LGA.

“When the suspect cut the throat of the lady, he left her in a pool of blood.

“The suspect left the victim believing that she was dead but the victim was rescued by a good Samaritan who took her to General Hospital in Kurfi.

“The victim, who is responding to treatment, informed the police about the incident,” he said.

Gwana said that police traced the accused and arrested him at Sabon Gari area of Charachi LGA.

The police chief said that the housewife, who resides at Dan-Nayaki Village in Bakori, allegedly poisoned the rice and beans she cooked for her husband, Saminu Usman.

Gwana said that Usman and his brother died after eating the food; the third person survived.

Pension fraud: AGF seeks arrest, prosecution of Maina

•Minister urges dismissal of suit challenging bench warrant

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami (SAN) has asked a Federal High Court in Kaduna to declined jurisdiction over a suit by embattled former chairman of the Presidential Pension Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, challenging the arrest warrant issued against him by an Abuja court.

Malami urged the court to dismiss the suit and allow the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the government agency that got the arrest warrant, to proceed with Maina’s arrest and prosecution.

The AGF told the court that granting any of the reliefs sought in the suit by Maina will do incalculable and permanent damages to the nation’s fight against corruption as well as reverse all gains made so far.

Malami spoke in court processes he filed in response to the suit filed by Maina. The suit has the EFCC, AGF, Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives as respondents.

It basically challenges the legitimacy of the arrest warrant got against him by the EFCC and the commission’s decision to declare him wanted based on the said order issued by a Magistrate’s Court in Abuja.

It is Maina’s contention that the EFCC was an illegal body, on the grounds that  law setting it up – the EFCC Establishment Act 2004 – was an illegal legislation, the amendment of its principal Act having not been allegedly effected by the National Assembly.

He claimed that the principal Act – the EFCC Act 2002 – was amended as EFCC Act 2004 unilaterally by then President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He argued that since the President lacked the constitutional powers to unilaterally alter any law made by the legislature, the EFCC Act 2004, allegedly altered by President Obasanjo, becomes illegal and void and on which the EFCC cannot rely to act, including declaring him wanted.

Maina, among others, urged the court, in his originating summons, “to hold that the plaintiff (he) cannot be declared wanted or arrested by any government agency invoking the powers of the EFCC Act 2004 for the same (the law) being an illegal enactment”.

However, the AGF, in his counter affidavit, argued that “since a court of law cannot shield any person from arrest, investigation and possible prosecution, the plaintiff (Maina) cannot claim to have any legal right in an effort to stop any subsequent arrest, investigation and prosecution”.

Malami faulted Maina’s claim about the enactment of the EFCC Act 2004, insisting that it was validly passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly.

He challenged the competence of the suit in an objection he filed.

He urged the court to decline jurisdiction because the suit was wrongly commenced.

The AGF also described the suit as an abuse of court process on the grounds that Maina had filed a similar suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Further proceedings will resume in the case on January 15, 2018.

  • Jibes, as police arrest Bobrisky over gay claim

Jibes, as police arrest Bobrisky over gay claim

Nigerian Twitter yesterday erupted following news of the arrest of social media sensation, Idris Okuneye.

Although several reasons have been given for his arrest, most seem to go with the fact that it has to do with his coming out as gay.

In a post earlier in the week, he stated; “All this house boys and girls coming to drop comment on page are you all stupid? Do you think your hate comments can change me? Why are you trying so hard to get my attention?… If all your insult bothered me, I should have stopped posting here. Yes am gay, I will go to hell fire. Thanks. Please what else? Am tired of that same words. I wanna hear something new.”

Another report has it that the bleaching cream merchant was arrested at the instance of Toyin Lawani on the grounds of slander.

Reacting to the arrest, most Twitter users seem to think he has gone back to being a guy, suggesting that his gender is in contention.

For instance, a Twitter user, @deetwogod chirped; “But why will they arrest BOBRISKY?? What offence did he …sorry what offence did she….  Oya sorry what offence did it commit?

Another user, @ezxmuoh is of the opinion that Bobrisky admitting to being gay openly in a country where it is a crime makes him nothing but foolhardy.

For @harbjar, it all boils down to one question. “Will Bobrisky be jailed in the male section or female section of the prison???”

Meanwhile, Bobrisky has spoken out for the first time since he was arrested on Tuesday. Speaking to the popular Linda Ikeji Blog, he stated that Toyin Lawani was the one who called for his arrest, accusing him of stealing his customers.

“Toyin Lawani asked her lawyer to write petitions against me that I worked for her and I’m selling cream to all her customers. Which was a fat lie. I never worked for Toyin. She was my friend. I can’t remember ever working for Toyin or learning how to make cream from her. Then she also said I threatened her. So we are going to Abuja cos that was where the case was reported,” he was quoted as saying.

However, Lawani’s camp has washed its hands off the arrest. Speaking through her Personal Assistant, the entrepreneur denied having anything to do with his arrest.

Bobrisky, who is famous for being a cross-dresser, was arrested on Tuesday by the Lagos state police.

  • Police arrest herders for ‘kidnap, murder of colleague’

The police in Ogun State have arrested two herders for alleged kidnap and murder of another herder, Taye Amodu.

Hassan Amodu and Abubakar Abdullah, the police said, allegedly kidnapped and murdered their victim on October 23, at Obada Oko, Abeokuta, where they allegedly rustled eight of his cattle.

Upon receiving the information, it was learnt that the Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu, directed the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) to fish out the perpetrators.

Spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said the hideout of the suspects was uncovered about 5:30pm that day at Imeko.

“Their hideout was in a forest and operatives stormed the place.  The suspects were arrested and a pump action gun loaded with four live cartridges and two cutlasses were recovered.

“During interrogation, they confessed to have killed the victim because he strugged with them when they were taking him away. His body was buried in a shallow grave inside the forest. They equally confessed to have taken away eight of the victim’s cows.

“The suspects will be arraigned after investigation.”

  • Senate to CEOs: ‘honour our invitation or we arrest you’

The National Assembly (NA) has reiterated its stand to  arrest any Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who fails repeatedly to honour summons by its committee, describing the act as an affront on the National Assembly.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Samuel Anyanwu, reiterated this position in a chat with newsmen on the sideline of the just-concluded retreat of the National Assembly Committees on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions in Lagos.

Senator Anyanwu said:“I advise that each time you are invited, you come, if not the legislators can frustrate you.

“If you are invited a couple of times and you do not appear, it is an affront on the committee; we will issue a warrant of arrest, it is in our Constitution in Sections 88 and 89. The Senate and the House of Representatives have every power to summon anybody in this country to give evidence in a matter they are handling.

“For instance, if the CEO of an organisation is being invited, all the members of the Assembly are present. We are not there for nothing. We have sworn an oath to protect all manner of people,”he said.

Commenting on the incessant invitations, Senator Anyanwu said: “What if it was a court case; would they not have been going to court multiple times before a judge? I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

Recently, the Nigeria Employers Consultative Assembly (NECA) called on the legislative arm of government to restrain its committees from what it described as “brazen attack on enterprise right” until the Supreme Court determined the case brought before it which sought clarification on the scope and extent of the constitutionality of investigatory authority/powers of the lawmakers in Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution.

In a press conference by NECA in Lagos, its Director-General, Mr. Olusegun Oshinowo, said there had been an unhealthy increase in the incidence of unwarranted investigations by the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives, through countless various committees and ad-hoc committees into any aspect of the private sector’s operation that catches their fancy.

Oshinowo said NECA has already dragged the House of Representatives to court over frequent summoning of companies’ CEOs.

According to him, their actions  have undermined business sustainability and growth.

  • Police arrest 16 kidnap suspects in Akwa Ibom

Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested 16 suspected members of a kidnap syndicate said to be responsible for killings and kidnapping in Ukanafun Local Government, Commissioner Zubairu Muazu has said.

Speaking at the weekend, he said the arrest of the criminals was made possible through a “well planned and coordinated operation.”

Muazu said: “To build a peace process where crisis had occurred in the past, you need to pass through a lot of stages. Fears were already in the minds of the people and they felt unsafe. To erase this fear, we have to launch an undercover operation.

“It went as far as people dropping threat messages to individuals in Ukanafun; ‘bring a certain amount of money or else we will kill you’. We got quite a number of such letters and threat messages. We analysed them and identified the syndicate and then launched an attack.”

The commissioner, who spoke through Bala Elkaner, spokesman, said weapons and other items were recovered from the suspects, who were helping the command with information.

Elkaner, who reviewed security situation in the restive local governments, said the reactive approach adopted by the command in the past helped the situation.

This, he said, necessitated not only the introduction of “Operation Purge” by the commissioner, but also going in there to talk to the people.

“There has been this reactive approach where police move in there, investigate and make arrests. This has not actually helped, so the police commissioner took this proactive measures, not just deploying troops but also meeting the people.

“He was with the two communities where he held two meetings, discussed, identified and agreed on the solution with the people.”

The spokesman said part of such solution was to identify buffers zones where the operation could be carried out, to reassure the people of police presence.

He said the only approach that would bring solution was community policing, where the people would be involved in identifying their problems and proffering solution.
