    Tambuwal urges arrests

House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has said the twin bombings in Kaduna on Wednesday as cruel, barbaric and heinous crime.

He noted that targeting prominent persons, as it happened in the twin blasts, was regrettable and condemnable.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, the Speaker said killing innocent persons cannot be justified under any guise.

He said whoever was behind the Kaduna blasts should be brought to justice.

Tambuwal thanked God that the apparent targets – General Muhammadu Buhari and Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi – escaped unhurt.

But the Speaker was sad that many people were killed in the blasts.

“Our sympathy and condolences are with the families of the victims of the blast. Their loved ones did not die in vain,” he said.

The Speaker prayed for the quick recovery of those injured or traumatised in the blasts.

  • NDLEA arrests man with 1kg of methamphetamine

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos have arrested a 30-year-old man with a kilogramme of methamphetamine.

The suspect concealed the drugs inside the pockets of jean trousers in his bag.

Officials detected the drugs during the outward screening of Egypt air passengers to Malaysia.

NDLEA Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, said the arrest was due to the search by the officers.

His words: “It took the search by the officers during the screening of passengers to detect the drugs. They tested positive to methamphetamine and weighed 1kg.

“Six parcels of the drugs were found in the pockets of three pairs of jean trousers inside a bag belonging to Orurno Osita Chukwu Michael. The case is under investigation.”

The suspect said he was to be paid $3,000.

“I was to be paid $3,000 when I get to Malaysia with the drugs. I work as a labourer in Enugu State. I am single and searching for a job. I was excited when they offered to sponsor my trip to Malaysia and pay me $3,000.

“This is my first time of coming to Lagos and they promised to assist me in securing a job in Malaysia. Unfortunately, the drugs were found in my bag.”

The Chairman/Chief Executive of the agency, Ahmadu Giade, urged the public to be cautious of the tricks used by drug barons.

“The public should avoid being used by drug barons to smuggle drugs. They use many tricks, such as promising job opportunities abroad and assuring them that they will not be caught,” he said.

The NDLEA boss added that every arrest and drug seizure made is a victory for the country’s anti-narcotic campaign.

Maiduguri explosions: Military arrests ‘mastermind’, 30 others

A KEY suspect in the twin-bomb explosions in Maiduguri was arrested yesterday by the military after a massive combing of the city.

He was said to be one of those who generated the explosives which killed more than 50 people in the troubled Borno State capital.

A probe of the Maiduguri incident was on yesterday in Abuja, forcing top military leaders to hold a long review session.

A source in the military admitted that some of those injured in Saturday’s explosions had died, leading to the rise in the death toll.

The troops and Boko Haram were locked in more encounters in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states since. Friday. The battle in Mainok is described as fierce.

Following the encounters, 30 other Boko Haram members were picked up in Adamawa and Yobe states and taken into custody for interrogation.

The Nigerian Air Force continued aerial attacks yesterday, targeting Boko Haram bases and hideouts.

A military source, who spoke in confidence on the Maiduguri explosions, said: “A suspect believed to be one of those who generated the explosions has been arrested and taken into custody for interrogation.

“He was picked up from his temporary hideout from where he had planned to run away from Maiduguri.

“The probe of the blast is ongoing; we are trying to study and analyse how they penetrated the tight security in Maiduguri with a van conveying firewood. We have also beefed up security to prevent a reoccurrence.”

The source said the success of recent air raids accounted for the reprisals by Boko Haram.

“Due to persistent air strikes, these insurgents were dislodged from their bases and cells or camps. In frustration, they sneaked into Maiduguri to wreak havoc.”

Asked of the update on those killed, the source admitted a rise in the death toll.

“The death toll must certainly be from those wounded,” the source added.

“Some of these fighters were also picked up in border towns and villages in their attempts to escape to their camps in Cameroon.

“We have found on them fighting weapons; they are undergoing intense grilling in some designated centres.

“Some of them were behind recent attacks on villages and towns in Adamawa and Yobe states.”

Yesterday, the Air Force continued its air strikes of identified camps and bases of Boko Haram.

Defence Headquarters spokesman Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade said: “Somebody was arrested in connection with Saturday’s explosions in Maiduguri. Investigation is in progress.”

He said one of the tricks used by the suspect was to convince his victims that he had connections with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to effect the release of their goods or drugs purportedly seized in Lagos.

Okeiyi said: “One of the guises, after establishing relationships with victims and their families, is to claim that either NAFDAC or NDLEA has seized their consignments of drugs in Lagos and he would demand huge sums to settle the case.

“The last straw that broke the camel’s back was his blackmail of one of the victims, a female civil servant in the state (name withheld), by posting her nude picture to the Internet because she refused to part with more money after swindling her of more than N700,000 to secure the release of her drugs purportedly seized by NDLEA in Lagos.

“Another victim, Justina A. Ezeani, alleged that the suspect posed as a doctor with the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Delta State, assisting the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka to stabilise, and swindled her and her in-law, Gabriel Udenze (an engineer), of more than N500,000 under the guise of securing the release of his drugs seized by NAFDAC in Lagos,” he said.
