Arsenal get revenge win over Aston Villa

Leandro Trossard scored with his first touch before Thomas Partey’s strike sealed a 2-0 victory for Arsenal over Aston Villa.

The Gunners were looking to avenge April’s defeat to Villa, which ultimately cost them their first title in 20 years, and dominated the early minutes of the contest.

Fresh from signing a new long-term deal at Villa Park, Emi Martinez was twice called upon to deny his former employers but it was Ollie Watkins who missed the best chance of the half for the hosts.

David Raya’s heroics at one end of the pitch allowed Trossard to put Arsenal in front before Partey rounded off a clinical second-half display.

A slightly delayed kick-off only built the atmosphere inside Villa Park and the crowd gave their players a standing ovation ahead of their season in Europe as “Holte Enders in the sky” was belted down from the stands pre-match.

EPL: Arsenal defeat Aston Villa for perfect start

Arsenal survived their latest severe examination from bogey side Aston Villa to emerge with a statement victory after a thunderous encounter at Villa Park.

In a tale of two goalkeepers, Arsenal’s David Raya produced a miraculous second-half save from Ollie Watkins with the scoreline goalless before opposite number Emi Martinez blundered to allow Thomas Partey’s shot to squirm through his hands to gift the Gunners a vital two-goal cushion.

Arsenal were hanging on after Watkins missed a golden chance in the first half to put Villa ahead but the pivotal moment came after the break when Raya somehow recovered his ground to make a stunning one-handed stop from the England striker after Amadou Onana’s shot bounced back off the bar.

The biggest clash of the week will see Arsenal travel to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa.  Coached by former Arsenal Manager, Unai Emery, Aston Villa did a double over Arsenal last season, winning 1-0 and 2-0 at home and the Emirates Stadium, respectively. Villa were the only team Arsenal failed to score against in the league last season and the Gunners will be out to make amends.

During his press conference, Arsenal Manager, Mikel Arteta, spoke about the big task at Villa Park and what his team has to do to win.

“Last season, they scored and we didn’t. Very simple. We had an enormous amount of chances to do that.“

    Arsenal finalise Mikel Merino’s signing

Spanish Mikel Merino has been a rumoured target for the Gunners following his role in helping  win Euro 2024 this summer.

Merino was left out of the Sociedad squad for their La Liga opener because of the ongoing negotiations, but Now reports state the two clubs have finally agreed terms.

Merino is set to become Mikel Arteta’s third major signing of the summer following the capture of Riccardo Calafiori and goalkeeper David Raya joining on a permanent basis after spending the 2023/24 season on loan at the Emirates from Brentford.

Merino leaves Sociedad after making 242 appearances for the club across all competitions since his 2018 arrival, scoring 27 goals and providing 30 assists.

The 28-year-old already has experience in England, making 25 appearances for Newcastle United in the 2017/18 campaign.

The midfielder’s experience will be pivotal as Arsenal will be looking to clinch the league title after falling short in the previous campaigns.

    Arsenal renew race for Osimhen

Arsenal has become the latest team to be linked with a summer move for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

Reports out of Italy claimed  talks are underway  with the Napoli striker after top target Benjamin Sesko opted to stay put at RB Leipzig and sign a new contract.

The 25-year-oldNigerian ace  has made it clear that he wishes to leave Napoli with the Premier League a possible destination.

The player has a release clause of €160M, which Napoli patron Aurelio De Laurentiis will use to give his new coach, Antonio Conte, a sizeable summer war chest.

After a superb debut season in Serie A, injuries and a lack of form derailed Osimhen’s progress as Napoli failed miserably in their defence of the Serie A title.

Chelsea were reported to be keen on signing the Nigerian superstar, but recent interest from Saudi Arabia, where Osimhen is understood to have received an offer in excess of €40M a season, seems to have cooled the Stamford Bridge club’s interest.

Now Il Roma (via calcionapoli24.it) claimed  that last season’s Premier League runners-up have made contact with Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, to explore the possibility of a summer switch to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal edge Man Utd to go top of EPL

Arsenal kept their Premier League title dreams alive by ending an Old Trafford hoodoo to grind out a 1-0 win at Manchester United to move back top of the table.

Leandro Trossard scored the only goal on 20 minutes as Arsenal won for just the second time in 17 games away at United to go a point clear at the summit.

Manchester City still have the destiny of the title in their own hands as the defending champions have two matches left to Arsenal’s one.

However, the Gunners kept the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s men ahead of their tricky trip to Tottenham on Tuesday.

Defeat further dented United’s chances of competing in Europe next season.

Erik ten Hag’s men showed more spirit than in a dismal 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday, but have now won just one of their last eight Premier League games.

United remain eighth in the table, three points adrift of both Newcastle, who they face on Wednesday, and Chelsea.

Arsenal have been in scintillating form in 2024 to remain in the race for their first league title in 20 years.

Mikel Arteta’s men have won 15 and drawn one of their 17 league games since the turn of the year.

But Arsenal were far from their flowing best as the expected onslaught of an injury-ravaged United never materialised under unusually stifling heat in England’s north-west.

The manner of defeat at Palace had increased the scrutiny on United boss Ten Hag.

He made three changes to the team swept aside at Selhurst Park as Scott McTominay, Sofyan Amrabat and Amad Diallo came in.

The Dutchman’s options were again hamstrung by a lengthy list of absentees with captain Bruno Fernandes among those sidelined and a bench littered with youngsters.

But his decision to retain Casemiro as a makeshift centre-back after his woeful showing against Palace will become another stick to beat the beleaguered coach with.

The Brazil captain was dropped from their squad for the Copa America in midweek due to his terrible form.

After United had managed to keep the free-scoring visitors at bay for the opening 20 minutes, Casemiro was culpable for the opening goal.

The 32-year-old was laboured in pushing up from a United goal-kick to play Kai Havertz onside and Trossard then stole in on the blind side of Casemiro to tap in the German’s cross.

United’s new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance at Old Trafford rather than at Wembley to see the club’s women pick up their first ever major trophy in the FA Cup final.

The work that lies ahead of Ratcliffe has been laid bare in recent weeks, but the home side did manage to keep the majority of the 74,000 crowd onside by taking the game to Arsenal after the break.

Arsenal, though, were rarely seriously troubled as they held out for a sixth clean sheet in their last seven away league games.

Alejandro Garnacho was United’s one live wire but smashed into the side-netting with his best chance to equalise.

Gabriel Martinelli and Declan Rice were denied by brilliant Andre Onana saves to prevent Arsenal the second goal they craved to avoid a tense finale.

The visitors’ desperation to see the game out was evident as Martinelli took the ball to the corner with 10 minutes of the 90 still to play.

But Arsenal did just enough to ask the question City, who host West Ham on the final day of the season after their visit to north London in midweek.

Arsenal were given permission by the teenager’s family to pay their respects and applause rang round the Emirates Stadium after 14 minutes.

Arsenal doubled their lead in the 70th minute when Declan Rice won the ball on the edge of the box and teed up Leandro Trossard, who curled the ball home from inside the area, before Rice scored in added time to boost the Gunners’ goal difference.

Bournemouth threatened a lot more in the second period and Dominic Solanke forced David Raya into a save in the second half before Justin Kluivert flashed a shot wide.

The Cherries thought they had pulled a goal back through Antoine Semenyo but his strike was ruled out for a foul on David Raya by Solanke in the buildup.

EPL: Arsenal survive Spurs fightback in five-goal North London derby thriller

Arsenal overcame the hurdle of a north London derby and an anxious finale to maintain momentum in the Premier League title pursuit with a vital victory at Tottenham.

The Gunners’ meeting with their bitter rivals was seen as arguably the most treacherous of their remaining fixtures, but they took ruthless advantage of Spurs’ defensive flaws to establish a three-goal lead by half-time.

Arsenal were then thrown off course when a dreadful clearance by goalkeeper David Raya presented Cristian Romero with a goal after 64 minutes, the nerves really jangling when Heung-Min Son scored from the spot three minutes from the end of normal time after Declan Rice fouled Ben Davies.

It was all so different when Arsenal went ahead after 15 minutes as the recalled Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg glanced Bukayo Saka’s corner into his own net, the England forward crowning a sweeping counter-attack with a smooth finish for the second after 27 minutes.

Spurs, who saw Micky van de Ven’s goal ruled out for a marginal offside with the score 1-0, were infuriated as they claimed Leandro Trossard had fouled Dejan Kulusevski before Saka scored, and were even more frustrated when the unmarked Kai Havertz headed in Arsenal’s third from another corner seven minutes before the break.

Arsenal were then content to see out the victory, only for Raya to give Spurs hope by sending a clearance straight to Romero.

An unlikely Spurs comeback seemed on when Son scored from the spot but Mikel Arteta’s side were able to close out the game. BBC
