Wenger’s future at Arsenal will be decided after FA Cup final

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, said a decision on his future at the club would be made at a board meeting after their FA Cup final against Chelsea on May 27.

The Frenchman will be out of contract at the Emirates at the end of the campaign as he prepares for the final Premier League game of the season against Everton.

He hopes that the club will finish in the top-four for the 21st consecutive season.

“I don’t know what will happen in the meeting,” Wenger told a news conference on Friday.

“There are many aspects of a football club which has to be discussed at a board meeting. One of those is what happens with the manager, the players coming in and contract renewals.

“The most important thing is to win the football game. What happens to me after that is less important,’’ he said.

When asked whether a decision will be announced shortly after the FA Cup final, he replied, “of course.”

The North London club is relying on an upset to secure Champions League qualification.

They are sitting fifth in the standings, one point behind fourth-placed Liverpool and three behind third-placed Manchester City.

Liverpool host already-relegated Middlesbrough and Manchester City travel to Watford who languish 16th in the standings.

Arsenal has won their last four league games and Wenger expected his side to focus on their own performance ahead of the final weekend of the season.

The real month of May is here with us, and it is more matters for a May morning, as William Shakespeare famously put it. You cannot beat the bard of Stratford Upon Avon when it comes to uncanny insights about the human condition. More than five hundred years ago, the great dramatist could foresee that the nascent Industrial Revolution with its insatiable hunger for raw material would eventuate in colonization which will in turn produce major global economic contradictions the least of which is the phenomenon famously described as unequal exchange.

But as the Prospero-Caliban duet has emphatically demonstrated, Shakespeare was also immensely aware that unequal exchange in the economic department may actually lead to equal exchange in the verbal department. The old empire often strikes back in mysterious ways. When you gift a man with a new language, his first act of defiance and rebellious independence is to curse you back in the acquired language with much guts and gusto.

Snooper hopes that this lengthy disquisition about colonization and its disquiet will put readers in the right frame of mind about what Okon the rogue cook is doing poking his nose into the issue of a new coach for Arsenal Football club in faraway England. But just as colonization has produced its contradictions, the actual colonial conquest and the endemic crisis of identity it has fostered on Africans have also yielded fantastic cultural dividends. Why are we so blessed!!!!

In Nigeria today, the youths know more about what is happening in the English Premier League than what may be happening in the field of politics. They know all the coaches and the coached. They even know the uncoachables and the unsignables. In an infamous mix-up, when some youths were asked whether they know Obafemi Awolowo, they responded that the only Obafemi they were aware of was Obafemi Martin, aka Oba-Goal, the famous footballer. They view learning and reading as leading to entrapment in the poverty web whereas football leads to fame and fabulous riches.

On Wednesday, Okon barged into the living room covered in feces, looking as if he had survived a fall into a pit latrine and oozing with an offensive odour like a walnut fairy.

“Okon, what is all this nonsense, and where are you coming from?” snooper asked covering his nose.
“ Oga na Yoruba shit. I go dig dem Yoruba NIA man’s house see whether dem dollar for Ikoyi apartment remain. Naim I come fall inside shit tank. You know say Yoruba shit na wicked shit after dem don take gbegiri soup, akara, bushmeat…..” the mad boy whimpered as snooper cut him short.

“ Just shut up, you hear and go and clean yourself”, snooper screamed.

“ No oga na change I come change make I go back. I go clean when I don come back. Even dem whistle I wan blow come fall inside shit tank. Kai dis wicked Yoruba people. Na juju dem man dey use. He get one big tortoise who dey guard dem house…” the mad boy drooled on.

“ Okon, you will leave this house at once. By the way what is that paper bulging from your pocket?”
“ Ah dat one na dem shortlist for Asiere Wanka, abi wetin you dey call dem Arsenal coach? We don tire for him tuketuke coaching. Make him go home, abi na by force? He get two Nigerian coach I dey eye like dat. One na Ibrahim Shukushuku, na him dey coach dem Benue Warrior when three Yoruba players come kaput for field. That one he go show dem oyinbo people African pepper. The second na Emmanuel Vampire, dem dey call dat one Air raid or ten-ten. When dem wound him player and carry him out, him go ask him own player make dem reduce dem tally. So dem know wetin Vampire mean. He get one match for Enugu like dat only six players remain so dem referee come pick race. Na him go finish dem premier league.”

On that note snooper drove the mad boy out with a broomstick.

Totenham hotspur add to Arsene Wenger misery with a comfortable 2-0 derby win against Arsenal at white hart lane.

Goals from Dele Alli and a penalty converted by Harry kane sees off their north London rival, making it diffilcut for Arsenal to qualify for next season champions league

The home side looks well perfect and composed throughout the game dominating most of the possession for full 90 minutes keeping Arsenal shut down totally and also put an end to a  22-year curse against Arsenal topping them on the league standings for the first time in 22 years this season.

Tottenham are back in contention for the English premier league once again securing all three points today and closing gap against the leader Chelsea.

However, Pep Guardiola side Manchester city were forced to 2-2 draw against the bottom line side Middlesbrough thanks to an equaliser from Gabriel Jesus towards the end of the game to secure a point for City.

Arsenal to trust  Wenger with £200m transfer budget

Arsene Wenger will reportedly be the man in charge of Arsenal when the club release a hefty kitty for this summer’s transfer activity.

Plenty of fans have made it clear that they want the Frenchman to step down when his contract expires in the summer.

Protests have been held before matches, while supporters have unfurled banners calling for Wenger to go, but it is believed that the 67-year-old could sign a new two-year deal.

According to The Mirror, the North London outfit  are expected to have around £200m to spend this summer, and half of that will come from selling a number of first-team players.

The report claims that Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lucas Perez and David Ospina could be among those heading out the Emirates exit gates.

In terms of incomings, Wenger reportedly wants a deep-lying midfielder, two wingers, two full-backs, a goalkeeper and a striker, with Lyon star Alexandre Lacazette being the main target for the forward role.

Crystal Palace wide-man Wilfried Zaha is a rumoured target of Arsenal’s, while Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney is also being eyed by the North London outfit, who are in danger of missing out on a Champions League place this season.

Arsenal currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, seven points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City with eight games left to play.

The Gunners meanwhile considering appointing their former player Marc Overmars as the club’s new director of football.

The North London outfit are planning a structural change to the club this summer, but it is believed that manager Arsene Wenger is likely to stay put.

Reports have claimed that the new director of football will oversee transfers, which is something that Wenger has been in control of during his entire 20 years as manager.

Overmars, who spent three years of his playing career at Arsenal, is on the list of candidates for the new role at the Emirates.

The Dutchman currently works as the director of football at Ajax.

  • Crystal Palace inflict damaging defeat on Arsenal

Crystal Palace inflict damaging defeat on Arsenal

Crystal Palace continued their recent revival to boost their English Premier League survival hopes and leave Arsenal struggling to maintain their run of top-four finishes under Arsene Wenger.

Palace led through Andros Townsend’s close-range finish, doubling their lead when Yohan Cabaye’s shot looped in.

Luka Milivojevic clinched victory with a firm, low penalty kick as Palace moved six points clear of the relegation zone.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sixth-placed Arsenal did not manage a shot on target in a poor second half.

Some travelling Gunners fans again called for manager Wenger to leave the club.

He has led Arsenal to top-four finishes in each of his previous 20 seasons at the helm.

The Frenchman’s side are seven points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City with eight games remaining.

The manner of Arsenal’s performance — disorganised, devoid of attacking ideas and lacking fight — will increase the scrutiny on Wenger yet again.

The 67-year-old has already faced protests from some supporters urging him to leave, with more calls clearly audible.

There was also the barracking of his players in the latter stages of the match at Selhurst Park.

Wenger’s contract expires at the end of the season and the club has offered him a new two-year deal, although he is still to announce whether he intends to carry on.

Arsenal had 72 per cent possession against Palace but that mattered for little as the hosts broke quickly on the counter-attack, exploiting space down the flanks and taking their chances clinically.

The Gunners looked defensively vulnerable whenever Palace went forward, lacking leadership without injured captain Laurent Koscielny.

And when the visitors did attack, Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was only required to make saves from Mohamed Elneny and Alexis Sanchez.

After the break, Hennessey did not even face a shot on target as Arsenal suffered a fourth straight away defeat for the first time under Wenger.

“Palace wanted it more. You could sense that from the kick-off,’’ Theo Walcott, Arsenal’s stand-in captain, said

  • Wenger faces reality as Arsenal loses 3-0 to Crystal Palace

Wenger faces reality as Arsenal loses 3-0 to Crystal Palace

In a season that’s featured numerous embarrassing results for Arsenal, it’s difficult to pick out one and refer to it, definitively, as the most embarrassing. Yet, there’s a very clear argument for Monday’s 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace deserving that distinction.

Arsenal entered Monday’s match seven points behind Manchester City for fourth place in the Premier League, having gained a small bit of ground on their rivals for Champions League places by beating West Ham United last week. But City — along with Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Manchester United — had won over the weekend. The Gunners had to win just to keep pace, and against a relegation battler like Palace, they should have been able to do so.

But it was Palace who dictated the pace and style of the match from the start. Arsenal had plenty of the ball, but their chances were limited, and they looked under serious threat every time Palace broke forward. Arsenal’s defending on Andros Townsend’s opening goal in the 17th minute was terrible, with their back line completely disorganized. Things didn’t get better in the second half — it was Palace who came out of the locker room with more intensity, who looked the more likely to score, and who eventually did score the game’s second goal.

Palace’s third goal, a penalty, was perhaps a microcosm of Arsenal’s season. Not only did backup goalkeeper Damian Martinez foul Townsend, but he actually made more contact with his teammate Hector Bellerin, and was lucky not to injure him. Bellerin, it should be noted, was in good position to prevent Townsend from taking a dangerous shot before Martinez decided to clean out both of them.

Arsenal’s goal never came. Their best chances actually came before the penalty. For the first 68 minutes, the Gunners were flat, but from that moment until the end of the game they looked completely deflated. Palace held onto their 3-0 win comfortably.

Gooners were dissatisfied, and the wonderful #tweetyourwatchingArsenalface started popping on Twitter.

Wenger denies contract offer from PSG

Arsene Wenger has formally denied being offered a contract by Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain – rejecting the notion as ‘fake news’ – with the Arsenal boss still yet to announce whether he will be in charge at the Emirates Stadium next season.

The 67-year-old has kept the footballing world guessing if he will sign a new contract with the Gunners, but declared after Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at West Bromwich Albion that he has made up his mind.

The Frenchman has previously said if he is to end his two decade association with Arsenal he intends to manage elsewhere, with PSG the logical move given their wealth and the stuttering form under current coach Unai Emery.

Yet Wenger insists he has not been approached by the Parisians, who were in Arsenal’s Champions League group this season.

Using a popular phrase from United States president Donald Trump, Wenger told BeIN Sports: ‘It is a false rumour, that is what you call ‘fake news’. I formally deny it, it is not true.’

The loss at the Hawthorns was Arsenal’s fourth in their last five Premier League games and they now sit sixth in the table.

Wenger has increasingly split the Arsenal fan base with protests organised before recent matches and two planes flown over the West Brom game carrying conflicting messages – one of support for the manager, and one against any new deal being signed.

    Wenger gets four-match touchline ban

Arsene Wenger has been given a four-match touchline ban for his altercation with fourth official Anthony Taylor last weekend.

The Arsenal manager will miss Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Southampton and subsequent Premier League games against Watford, Chelsea and Hull, and has been fined £25,000.

Wenger accepted a charge of misconduct earlier this week after he was sent to the stands during the win over Burnley on Sunday.

He was sent from the touchline by referee Jon Moss for allegedly using abusive or insulting language towards Taylor after an injury-time penalty was awarded to the Clarets.

Wenger attempted to watch the rest of the game from the tunnel area but become involved in a physical altercation with the fourth official, and appeared to push Taylor.

The Frenchman apologised for his actions on Monday, admitting he regretted the entire incident.

“I regret everything. I should have shut up and gone in and gone home, basically.

“I apologise for that. There’s nothing bad. I said something you hear every day in football but nine times out of 10 you’re not sent to the stand for that.

  • Ex-referees call for lengthy ban for Wenger

Ex-referees call for lengthy ban for Wenger

Former referees Keith Hackett and Graham Poll are calling for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to get a lengthy ban for pushing the fourth official after he was sent to the stands during Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 win over Burnley.

Wenger appeared to push Anthony Taylor twice after the fourth official told the Frenchman to leave the tunnel, where he had stopped to watch Burnley’s Andre Gray take an injury-time penalty.

Wenger had been sent off for protesting that decision by referee Jon Moss, even though Francis Coquelin had clearly fouled Ashley Barnes in the box.

He apologised after the game but will likely face a sanction from the FA for his actions. Hackett, a former referee who later had a spell as head of Professional Games Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL), said the governing body should make an example of the Arsenal boss.

“For the sake of every official at every level of the game the FA must throw the book at Arsene Wenger after his disgraceful behaviour on Sunday, “said Hackett

“They need to send out a strong, clear message — officials are sacrosanct and if you lay hands on them you will pay a heavy price. A one- or two-match touchline ban just won’t cut it on this occasion.

He added: “What I would like to see as an absolute minimum is a six-game ban — but a far more severe punishment than simply being banished from the touchline.

  • Mourinho, Wenger in painful no-look handshake

Mourinho, Wenger in painful no-look handshake

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was back on the touchline for Saturday’s lunchtime clash with Arsenal, and the Portuguese gave his old foe Arsene Wenger a frosty handshake prior to kick-off.

Mourinho, who served a one-match ban following two FA charges in the victory over Swansea prior to the international break, did not exchange glances with the Frenchman at Old Trafford despite sticking to the FA’s protocol on pre-match handshakes.

The Portuguese enjoyed uninterrupted success over Arsenal during his time with Chelsea, heading into the clash with his old adversary unbeaten in 13 games, winning seven of them.

Wenger is clearly sick of the sight of Mourinho, with the Arsenal boss yet to conquer his Portuguese nemesis in competitive action, 12 and a half years after their first encounter.

And there was clearly no love lost despite the change in club, after Wenger took a subtle dig at Mourinho’s playing style in the build up to the encounter, claiming viewers will tune in elsewhere if the game fails to live up to its billing.

However, a late equaliser from Olivier Giroud has earned the Gunners an unlikely 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

United were in control for much of the 90 minutes and deservedly led through a Juan Mata effort but in the 89th minute, substitute Giroud levelled for the Gunners as they extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 11 games.
