Arthouse Contemporary will hold the eighteenth edition of its auction of Modern and Contemporary Art on Monday, May 22, at the Kia Showroom on AdeolaOdeku Street, Lagos. The auction which will be led by auctioneer John Dabney will feature works by renowned artists such as Ben Enwonwu, ErhaborEmokpae, Ben Osawe, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Abayomi Barber, David Dale, Twins Seven Seven, David Dale and AkinolaLasekan.
Others include El Anatsui, PejuAlatise, Victor Ehikhamenor, Ben Osaghae, Sokari Douglas Camp CBE, KainebiOsahenye and Gerald Chukwuma. International artists that will feature in the auction include SolyCisse, Tchif, Dominique Zimkpe, Nana Nyan Acquah, Kofi Agorsor and Ablade Glover.

Arthouse auction opens Saturday
Arthouse Contemporary, West Africa’s premiere auction house, will present its second edition of the Affordable Art Auction on February 11, at the Kia Showroom, 308 Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
It will feature no fewer than 123 lots by emerging artists, many of whom are being presented at auction for the first time, alongside Africa’s most prominent artists. The auction will also feature works by leading contemporary artists such as Olu Amoda, Rom Isichei, Ndidi Dike, Tayo Quaye, Abiodun Olaku, Bunmi Babatunde, Sam Ovraiti, Lemi Ghariokwu as well as modern masters such as Bruce Onobrakpeya, Ben Enwonwu, Ben Osawe, and Jimoh Buraimoh. The auction is expected to feature an unprecedented number of photographers, including George Osodi, Uche Okpa Iroha, Leonce Raphael Agbodjelou, Yetunde Ayeni Babaeko, Aderemi Adegbite, Oluwamuyiwa Logo and Jenevieve Aken.
The Affordable Art Auction is to engage emerging markets and the rise of a new collector base, with all works of art estimated below N1m. As the third annual auction after the May and November auctions of modern and contemporary art, the Affordable Art Auction will feature artworks that are scaled to a more affordable and accessible price point. The auction aims at attracting both seasoned collectors and first time buyers to build a stronger network of local clients in Nigeria.
The auction will also feature charity lots to support the Arthouse Foundation, a non-profit artist residency programme in Lagos, with artworks donated by artists Dipo Doherty, Olumide Onadipe, Sade Thompson and Uchay Joel Chima. The proceeds from these charity lots will go directly to supporting the programmes of the Arthouse Foundation, including its residencies, workshops, talks and public events. The artworks will be available for public viewing on Thursday, February 9th, 6-8 PM, and Friday, February 10th, 10 AM-6 PM.

Arthouse names four artists for residency
After hosting its first artist-in-residence, the United States-based Nigerian artist, Victor Ekpuk, the Arthouse Foundation has announced four recipients of its Residency Programme.
They are Dipo Doherty and Olumide Onadipe for the Spring Session (April 18-June 22) while Tyna Adebowale and Jelili Atiku are for the Fall Session (September 12 -December 16).
With a newly renovated building in the heart of Ikoyi, the Foundation offers live/work residencies for two artists in the year in three-month sessions. It aims to encourage the creative development of contemporary art in Nigeria by providing a platform for artists to expand their practice and experiment with new forms and ideas.
The first event of the Arthouse Foundation Spring Session, Meet the Artists, will hold on Saturday by 4 pm at the Arthouse Foundation in Ikoyi, Lagos. This gathering will allow the public to learn about the residents’artistic practice and plans for their project during the residency.
The residency includes an intensive public initiative throughout each residency including an artist’s talk, workshop, open studios and roundtable discussion. The programme culminates in an end of the year exhibition showcasing the resident’s new artistic projects.
Doherty is a painter whose work explores the language of spatial geometry, with a focus on the depiction of the self and the human form. Binding together a dynamic set of styles and motifs, Doherty creates abstracted figures that give expression to emotional, cultural and scientific energies. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia, and held solo exhibitions at Red Door Gallery and Nike Art Gallery in Lagos.
Onadipe is a sculptor who engages experimental processes that involve the manipulation of tactile materials. His work incorporates materials, such as plastic bags, metal, wood, jute bags and glass, using a process of twisting and melting to create amorphous shapes that play with sculptural balance. He is a graduate of Fine Art from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and held two solo exhibitions at the Pan Atlantic University, Lagos.
Adebowale is a mixed media artist who utilises texts, pigments and found materials to explore issues of gender, sexuality and identity. Her work comments on topics spanning Nigeria’s dysfunctional political landscape and the impact of social media in contemporary society. She is a graduate in painting from Auchi Polytechnic and has completed residencies at the Instituto de Arte E Cultura Yuroba in Brazil and Asiko Art School in Ghana.
Atiku is a performance and multi-media artist who examines political concerns for human rights and justice. Through drawing, installation, sculpture, photography, video and performance art, Atiku comments on the psychological and emotional effects of traumatic events including violence, war, poverty, corruption and climate change. A graduate of University of Lagos and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Atiku was the recipient of the prestigious Prince Claus Award in 2015.

Arthouse makes N31m at auction
About N31,050,000 was realised from 72 per cent of works sold at the Affordable Art Auction by the Arthouse Con temporary at the Kia Showroom on Victoria Island, Lagos.
It featured 116 lots from leading artists. Top sales included Rom Isichei’s Rejuvenation (2011), oil on board that sold for N1,322,500 ($6,613); Ben Osawe’s Mask (1985), a gouache on paper that sold for N920,000 ($4,600) and Kolade Oshinowo’s The Family (2009), an oil on board that sold for N782,000 ($3,910).
The auction also included three charity lots in support of the Society of Nigerian Artists, which raised N506,000 ($2,530) with all proceeds going to their fundraiser to expand their operations.
The auction was the third, after the Arthouse Contemporary’s bi-yearly auctions of modern and contemporary art in May and November. Each work was priced below N 500,000, casting a wider net to showcase a broader scope of contemporary artists. The auction aimed to engage emerging markets and the rise of a new collector base.
Arthouse Contemporary displayed many artists in the auction for the first time, and it also included works by leading modern masters and Africa’s most prominent artists — all scaled to a more affordable and accessible price point.

This edition of the auction will feature 103 lots, with new artists being featured for the first time including Timothy Adebanjo Fasuyi, Angela Isiuwe, Obiora Anidi, Chibuike Uzoma, Jimmy Nwanne, Johnson Uwadinma, Cheri Samba, Georgina Beier and Toyin Loye.
The auction will also include charity lots from notable artists Rom Isichei, Isaac Emokpae, Sade Thompson, Olu Ajayi and Gbenga Offo, in support of Arthouse Foundation, a non-profit residency based programme that provides a platform for artists to expand their practice and experiment with new art forms and ideas. The proceeds of these charity lots will go directly to support Arthouse Foundation’s acquisition of a permanent venue for its studio residencies. The Arthouse Foundation has inaugurated its first year with our first artist in residence, Victor Ekpuk, who is completing a four month residency in Lagos.

As contemporary African art becomes one of the fastest growing global art markets, the 14th edition of the Arthouse Contemporary’s auction will feature both master works from the modern period and contemporary art from the region’s most celebrated artists.
The auction, which will open on Monday May 11, by 6 pm at Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos include 116 lots from leading artists including Ben Enwonwu, El Antasui, Ablade Glover, Akinola Lasekan, Ben Osawe, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Lamidi Fakeye, Okpu Eze, Susan Wegner, Gani Odutokun, Yusuf Grillo, Abayomi Barber, Kolade Oshinowo, and Amon Kotei. Contemporary artists featuring for the first time at the auction include Justus Akeredolu, Paul Onditi, Charles Okereke, Ato Malinda Soji Adeshina, Jacqueline Souwari, Charly D’Almeida, Stanley Dudu, Samuel Tete Katcha, and Mario Kizito Kasule. Works will be on display at the Wheatbaker Hotel for viewing in anticipation of the auction, on Sunday, May 10, 2015, 12-6 pm and Monday May 11, 2015, 10 am-1 pm.
