CJID to launch two Artificial Intelligence tools to aid journalism practice

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), through its fact-checking, Verification, and Media Literacy programme, in collaboration with DUBAWA, is to launch two Artificial Intelligence tools to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of fact-checking processes for Journalists and writers in Africa.

The launch of the Audio Platform and Chatbot which represent a significant contribution to the fight against disinformation is coming at a time when some actors are leveraging tech innovations around the world to improve their skills and strategies.

According to the centre, the launch coincides with the CJID’s inaugural Journalism, and AI Conference scheduled to hold at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Abuja, from Monday, May 27th to Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

The conference will bring together media think tanks, journalists, technology experts, and stakeholders to explore the challenges and opportunities arising from the continuous influx of AI technologies in the media landscape.

Speaking on the conference, and the launch of the AI tools, Director of Programmes at the CJID, Akintunde Babatunde, said: “The media industry faces unique challenges in adapting to digital disruption while maintaining audience relevance and revenue sustainability.

“As stakeholders navigate this complex landscape, it is critical to explore the implications of digital technology and AI on media practices, foster collaboration among industry players, and identify strategies for harnessing these technologies to drive innovation and resilience. Because of this, the CJID is convening stakeholders from across the media industry, technology sector, civil society, and television industry leaders to examine the challenges and opportunities presented by this convergence”.

As false information increases across media platforms, the need for robust fact-checking tools has never been greater. DUBAWA’s new offerings promise to empower journalists, researchers, and the general public in their quest for reliable information.

The DUBAWA Audio scheduled for launch is an AI-powered tool deployed to facilitate the claim-sourcing aspect of the fact-checking process. As such, this tool was carefully designed to automatically listen to your radio programmes, transcribe them and extract verifiable claims, saving Journalists, researchers, fact-checkers and other users’ valuable time.

Complementing the audio tool is the DUBAWA Chatbot, which was built to answer everyday questions regarding viral misinformation and disinformation in the information ecosystem. It is useful in reducing the spread of harmful and misleading content online, providing results and references on a range of topics from credible sources.

  • Social media and artificial intelligence

    Social media and artificial intelligence

    • By Ganiu Bamgbose

Sir: Whatever be the discussion now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the icing on the cake. There is the AI dimension to virtually every topic. Even though artificial intelligence is not as recent as many think, its tentacles have, certainly, got broadened beyond imaginable limits. Britannica defines artificial intelligence as a term “frequently applied to the project of developing systems endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason, discover meaning, generalize, or learn from past experience”.

Studies and positions abound on the use, misuse and even abuse of artificial intelligence but issues concerning AI and social media usage have not enjoyed inquiries.

In his article, Mike Kaput described the relationship between social media and AI as a match made in heaven. He further enlightens that every social media platform on the planet uses AI in some way to function. This is to the extent that AI dictates what content surfaces in your feed and it moderates comments and content to improve user experience. From marketing, to creating publicity for contents, the social media platforms serve as relevant outlets which AI algorithm can boost. It is deserving of mention that there is no venture that does not have a market on the social media– you teach, preach, sing, sew, make hair, make people laugh… someone on social media is waiting to have your craft as their craze. And with AI, you can do the feasibility study for whatever your product is on social media, generate contents for your products, boost visibility for what you do, among many other benefits. Networking opportunities also abound on social media for anyone who can make the best use of them.

On the other side of the discussion, one disturbing thing with the social media is how it regularly creates so much to engage viewers through the help of AI while disengaging them from their own life. From apps that make you finer than how you are in real life and clothe you without having to pay, to the ones that predict your looks at old age, the social media have got so much for everyone to relax with that you may forget you owe your life the responsibility of growth. If you would have loved to be a judge but didn’t get the chance to study law, social media present you with numerous disputes to adjudicate on. From why Yul Edochie had to get a second wife, to who did what between Comedian Ay and his wife before their marriage ended, you would always have cases to attend to on social media that the only case you may forget to treat is your own life reality.

To be a literate person in the 20th century was to have a properly sharpened brain from reading novels, magazines, the holy books, articles, textbooks and so on. With the advent of social media in the 21st century where fake, false and fabricated news are all many read online, a literate person might even be more myopic than someone who is unable to read and write. From reel, to status, to story, it is amazing how Facebook and other social media have grown in less than two decades, giving us so much to engage us while disengaging many from things that concern them. Like other AI devices, the social media can help you do a lot for yourself and can help boost an idle, lazy and unproductive life for the unconscious ones.

The discussion on artificial intelligence remains narrow without a proper exploration of the concept from the perspective of social media. And like scholars say, the discussion continues.

    • Govt makes case for African Council on AI

The Federal Government has called for the establishment of African Council for Artificial Intelligence (AI).

It said this while confirming the receipt of $3.5 million as seed funding for AI Strategy from interested partners.

The Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, said it had become imperative to have the African Council for AI to ensure that the deployment of Artificial Intelligence in the continent is shaped by uniform regulations and market prospects.

“We already have same markets and trade regulations within Africa and in some sub-regions. It is important the future of AI in Africa follow same pattern for ease of transactions, shared experiences and mutual opportunities and benefits,” Dr. Tijani said.

The minister spoke at the weekend during the closing ceremony of a four-day international workshop on National Artificial Intelligence and Strategy for Nigeria.

Over 120 experts, researchers, academia and professionals from across the world attended the workshop.

Commenting on the seed funding for National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, Dr. Tijani said the $3.5 million was for the support of Nigeria’s efforts in AI systems and its deployment in the country.

The minister said the donation came from foreign and local partners, such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Luminate, Lagos Business School, Data Science Nigeria, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and other agencies under the supervision of his ministry.

Dr. Tijani explained that with a collective pool of resources by local and foreign partners, there is nothing impossible for Nigeria to achieve with the AI strategy.

“This is not just another workshop that ends today. Your efforts in the last four days will continue to make a lasting impression for tomorrow and we will, by action, ensure AI takes lead in Nigeria.

“We have been blessed with a partnership with Galaxy Backbone with a data centre already allocated to AI. For the pilot of this programme, we have seen 21st Century Investing $2 million into it.”

“My experience over the past seven to eight months is about supporting visions, to be able to articulate and come up with solutions. Funding resources and manpower is not a problem for Nigeria.

“With the President we have today, Nigeria can even fund some of these things because it is willing to invest in deep infrastructure.

“When we come together, there is nothing we cannot do. We may not understand the significance of this event. But for me, the approach to AI is to overcome the power of fear and one that is followed with extreme resources. Certain nations that were expected to participate in it did not. But it is heartwarming that with the collaboration of NITDA and other partners, we’re funding this initiative.”

The NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi expressed optimism that if done right, the strategy would lay a solid foundation and help Nigeria to achieve all its blueprints as well as help the President to deliver his priority areas.

He said: “Imagine a world without scarcity of resources, where every human being has access to basic needs, clean water and shelter. Imagine a world where death is an option, where all terminal diseases are cured, where aging can be reversed, where genetic disorders can be corrected.

“And imagine a world where we do not need to do mundane things, where we have lots of machines, robots doing many things for us, where everything we desire happens without you doing anything.

“All these things are possible. That is the future arising before us very fast. We have innovators using AI to improve agriculture, gene transplantation of pigs to human beings. This is the foundation being laid.

“We need to win the battle today and shape our tomorrow. We cannot afford to lose the battle tomorrow with the AI revolution. AI is going to be bigger than the internet.

“The internet is said to have lifted more than 1 billion people out of poverty over 30 years through the kind of value created.

“So, if AI is more than the internet, imagine what it can do. I believe this is the right time to get AI strategy and for us to be active player in the AI race.”
