Quadri tunes up for ITTF World Cup with French league

As the continent’s flag-bearer at the forthcoming the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Cup, Aruna Quadri hopes to use his involvement in Monday’s French league tie away to Angers Vaillante as warm up to the global championship in Germany next month.

After leading Jura Morez to one loss and a win in the prestigious French elite league, Quadri is expected to spearhead his team against the Sweden’s Jon Persson-captained side.

With four points from two league matches, Jura Morez will have their hands full when they battle the trio of Persson, Belgium’s Jens Lundqvist and France’s Christophe Legout in today’s exciting tie.

With just few days to the ITTF World Cup in the city of Saarbrucken, Germany, Quadri believes his involvement in the top flight league serves as preparation for the tournament.

“There is no doubt that playing in the French league will put me in top shape for the World Cup and I am also training well personally to ensure I make a lot of impact in Germany. I know all eyes will be on based on my performance at the Rio Olympic Games, but I am also aiming to do better than what I did in 2014. I hope and pray that I get a good draw in Germany. I am also hoping that the German fans can also support me just like they did in 2014 when I got to the quarterfinal stage of the competition,” Quadri said.

French league: Quadri inspires Jura Morez victory in opener

Fired up by his world rating, Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri single-handedly inspired Jura Morez to an away victory in the French Table Tennis league opener late on Tuesday in Paris.

Quadri, whose world ranking soared to 25 after his scintillating performance at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, was in fine form against the home team – Hennebont, which has England’s Pitchford Liam.

Having missed most of the matches for Jura Morez last season due to his involvement in the 2015 African Games, Quadri became the hero for his team when his two wins against Liam and China’s Chen Chien An aided his team 3-1 overall win.

It was the home team that took the first game when Liam overcame Quadri’s teammate- China’s Zhen Wang 3-1.

And in the second game, Quadri restored parity for Jura Morez when he overwhelmed Chien An 3-1 to restore parity for his team.

Andre Silva increased the lead for Jura Morez when he fought well to beat Robinot Quentin 3-2 to give Quadri’s team a 2-1 lead.

Knowing that a victory would ascertain their away victory, Quadri put up an excellent performance against Liam with a 3-2 (11-13, 11-9, 11-7, 13-15, 11-7) win to confirm their league opener victory.

An elated Quadri said he was happy that they were able to claim the victory away as this would boost their confidence in the second league match at home against La Romagne.

“This is a sweet victory and we were determined to send a warning signal to all other teams that we are really going to be a title contender this season. It was not an easy match but I am happy that grateful to God that we won,” he said.

    Sets new African record

Few weeks after setting the continental record as the first African to berth in the quarterfinal of the table tennis event of the Olympic Games, Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri has again inked another feat after leaping to 25 in the world in the September ITTF ranking released late on Monday.

Quadri who two years ago was listed in top 300 has defied all odds to prove bookmakers wrong with his extra-ordinary performance on the global stage which has made him the outstanding African table tennis player in the world.

Prior to being named the 2014 ITTF Star Player, Quadri in Dusseldorf, Germany became the first African to make it to the quarterfinal stage of the ITTF World Cup and since then, his world rating has continue to soar.

At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, he played his heart out beating some of the world’s best including former world number one, Germany’s Timo Boll to make it to the last eight of the Olympic Games as the first African to attain such height in table tennis.

In August 2016, Quadri was ranked 40th in the world with 2305 points, but his scintillating outing in Brazil earned him 152 points for him to garner 2457points in the September  to become the first player in Africa to be rated among the top 25 in the world.

Beyond his world rating, Quadri is also listed among the most active players in the world based on his latest points.

Africa’s most decorated table tennis star and a member of the ITTF ‘7’ Club, Segun Toriola’s efforts at Rio were rewarded as the seventh time Olympian moved from 120 to 106 in the ranking, while Egypt’s Omar Assar remains the continent number two. Assar who was edged out in the second round of the Rio Olympic Games by Ukraine’s Lei Kou dropped from 55 to 56 in the world.

Despite dropping to 118 from 110, Egypt’s Dina Meshref remains the top ranked African female player, while Nigeria’s duo of Edem Offiong and Olufunke Oshonaike were not lucky as well with Offiong dropping from 120 to 129 while Oshonaike dropped from 241 to 251.

  • Quadri leads Morez in French league opener

Quadri leads Morez in French league opener

Aruna Quadri will return to where he ended last season with Jura Morez in the elite division of the French table tennis league as the Rio 2016 Olympic Games quarter finalist leads his team against Hennebont in the league opener today, Tuesday September 6.

Starting their campaign away to the star-studded Hennebont coached by Boris Abraham and led by Japanese star, Niwa Koki as well as Greece’s Kalinikos Kreanga, France’s Quentin Robinot and Czech Republic’s Dmitrij Prokopcov.

Quadri, who single-handedly saved Jura Morez from relegation last season, will have his hand full against their opponent, but he will also rely on the efforts of his teammates – Carlos Machado, Zhen Wang and Andre Silva.

A determined Quadri who returned to training few days after returning from Rio 2016 Olympic Games believes Jura Morez would be stronger this year.

“We have added new player to boost the team and I am confident that what befell us last year would happen again because we did not start well. But this season, we are poised not to be fighting to remain in the top division this year and that is why we want to start well.

“Again, this season, I am starting the league with the team because last season when the league began, I was away in Congo Brazzaville for the African Games. I am willing to help the team that gave me the first opportunity to play in the top European league,” Quadri told NationSport.

  • Olympic tennis: Quadri to set another world record

With his performance at the last Rio 2016 Olympic Games, African champion, Aruna Quadri will be setting another world ranking record when the September ITTF rating is released this weekend.

The Nigerian in 2014 became the first African to make the top 30 in the world following his scintillating performance at the 2014 ITTF World Cup where he made it to the quarterfinal stage.

And with his heroic feat in Rio, the Oyo State-born star is already the toast of fans across the world following his quarterfinal berth in Brazil where he defeated some of the top players in the world including former world number one, Germany’s Timo Boll.

However, a partial ranking released after the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by the world table tennis ruling body, the Nigerian ranked 40thprior to the Olympic Games in Brazil has moved to 25th in the world as the first African to achieve such feat.

The partial ranking was based on the points he garnered in Rio but there are indications that he may move higher when the September rating is made public this weekend.

Meanwhile, Aruna Quadri’s continental rival, Egypt’s Omar Assar continued his free-fall in the partial rating as the former African champion dropped to 56 from 55 following his second round exit in Rio.

Rio Wrap Up: ITTF recognizes Aruna Quadri’s rare feat

Prior to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Aruna Quadri was never considered a potential star in the table tennis event but the Nigerian stunned the world with his excellent outing against the world’s best in Brazil.

His performance remains one of the major high points of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games according to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

In the Rio 2016 Wrap Up published at the weekend on the website of the world table tennis ruling body, Aruna was described as the Africa star of Rio.

“The Men’s Singles event also featured fantastic performances from two players in particular: Hugo Calderano and Quadri Aruna. Calderano made full use of the home crowd advantage as the Brazilian negotiated the likes of Par Gerell and Tang Peng on his way to a round four finish,” ITTF said.

The body added: “Nigerian contestant Aruna Quadri caused arguably the biggest upsets in the category as the 27th seed beat Chuang Chih-Yuan (6th) and Timo Boll (10th) before eventually exiting to Ma Long in the last eight – becoming the first African to reach that stage of an Olympic Table Tennis competition.”

Quoting Quadri after the feat, “This is amazing, I don’t know what to say. My fans made me do this. Thank you for all the Brazilian spectators for their support. They gave me so much energy. This feels so good, it is a dream come true.”

Also, the Women’s Singles tournament at Rio 2016 saw China’s Ding Ning win her first ever Olympic singles gold medal, after her victory over the London 2012 champion Li Xiaoxia (China). Both finalists brought their ‘A’ game as two of the world’s top competitors fought it out for the ultimate prize, but there could only be one winner and it was Ding who took it in the seventh game to seal the gold (11-9, 5-11, 14-12, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7).

Sadly, Li Xiaoxia confirmed that Rio 2016 would be her final appearance for China, “It’s with pity to retire, but it’s for a better future.” Li added, “Life can’t be always sweet, and I’ll face my retirement with a smile. Thank you table tennis for everything that the sport has gave me.”

Ma Long stood victorious over fellow compatriot Zhang Jike in the Men’s Singles final, as China won their second Table Tennis gold medal of the Games.

With the top two seeds going head-to-head there was potential for a thrilling final, however, after edging the first end in deuce, Ma thundered past Zhang in the following three games to win the gold medal on his Olympic singles debut (14-12, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4).

Jun Mizutani played some of the best Table Tennis of his career at Rio 2016, and he did his country proud by becoming the first Japanese competitor to win a singles medal at an Olympic Games with his victory against Belarusian Vladimir Samsonov in the bronze medal match.

Two major achievements came from the Women’s Team category, as Germany won silver and Mima Ito won a team bronze with Japan.

Germany’s silver is the first medal of any colour to be won by a European country in the Women’s Team competition, while Japanese teenager Mima Ito became the youngest competitor to win an Olympic Table Tennis medal aged 15 years and 300 days exactly.

  • ‘I’m the proudest person at 2016 Olympics’

‘I’m the proudest person at 2016 Olympics’

An excited President of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Wahid Oshodi is indeed pleased with the performance of the team at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

He however, said that with more support table tennis has the wherewithal to win medal for Nigeria at the multi-sports competition.

“I am quite pleased with the players. They have shown commitment and have strived to give their best. Everybody won a match and got into the main draw of the tournament and at this level that is not an easy task. They have all come together and supported each other even when support seemed to be lacking,” he said.

The ITTF Nomination member added: “With Aruna Quadri’s excellent performance in reaching the quarterfinal and Segun Toriola getting to the 2nd round, I must confess that I am quite elated and proud of this team. They have done the country proud. This is by far the best performance by a table tennis team outside Asia and Europe ever and must be celebrated. If you also look at the quality of players that we defeated then one must take his hat off to the players. It is a phenomenal performance taking all the circumstances of our preparation into consideration.”

He however, called for more support for the sport: “There is need for more exposure for our other players and coaches while more funding, increased and better quality coaching. We need to have at least eight male and female players consistently playing on the senior and junior professional tours. This will serve as an inspiration for the young ones coming behind especially when they see that they can build a financially rewarding career as people like Toriola and Oshonaike have done. We need to even work harder especially in the female category so we can sustain our achievements.

I am fully committed to helping our players get to the top and really hope we can get the right support from Government and the organized private sector such as the Banks, Telecoms and Oil companies and our big Industrialists: this category of organizations need to focus a lot more on helping our home grown sports stars develop instead of chasing after the big earning premiership football stars.”

  • My Rio feat belongs to Africa- Aruna Quadri

My Rio feat belongs to Africa- Aruna Quadri

When Aruna Quadri was named the 2014 ITTF Star Player, many were skeptical about the skills of the Oyo State-born athlete. As a self-made athlete, Quadri didn’t give up. He continued to sponsor himself to major competitions across the globe and his performance caught the eye of the President of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Wahid Oshodi, who began to support the ambitious player. His performance also attracted top clubs in Europe and he settled for a French club, Jura Morez, where he single-handedly saved the team from relegation last season.

His belief in Nigeria, despite lack of support, made him turn down a juicy offer from oil-rich Qatar. This showed his patriotic zeal and he promptly earned applause for his decision. His perseverance paid off at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, beating players rated above him. He became an instant hit, while those who didn’t reckon with him have now finally embraced him.

    [callout bgimg=”http://staging.thenationonlineng.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/THE-NATION-OLYMPICS.jpg” bg=”#ff7c7c” radius=”20″ font=”times” fontsize=”14″ bt_content=”Click For Updates” bt_pos=”right” bt_style=”undefined” bt_link=”http://staging.thenationonlineng.net/category/olympic/” bt_target=”_blank” bt_font_weight=”bold” bt_radius=”20″ bt_outer_border=”true” bt_outer_border_color=”#dd9527″][/callout]

Many are also speaking glowingly about Quadri’s exploits in Brazil as the first African to make it to the quarter-final round of the table tennis event at the Olympic Games. He also said he was not surprised by his performance, but he was stunned he made it to the last eight of the men’s singles, dedicating the feat to the African continent.

An excited Quadri said after the Rio feat that, “I feel so happy playing at the quarter-final of the Olympic Games. It is like a dream come true and I am very happy and satisfied with my performance in Rio and I must say that the achievement belongs to all African federations and players and it is not just a personal feat.”

Narrating his mission in Rio, he said: “Initially, I came here just to enjoy myself because I knew the qualities of players that qualified for the games. Apart from the Chinese, all other participants had 50–50 chances against one another and for that reason I was a bit relaxed and started playing without pressure. Also I had it in my mind that I am not in Rio just to add to the number of participants but to make an  impact. I must also say that my qualification to the quarter-final stage is as a result of my hard work and the success just came at the right time of my birthday. I strongly believe I have the potential but I was not expecting to have qualified for quarter-final and I was optimistic but it was not going to be easy.”

“I had difficulties in playing against defenders and winning against the Slovak Chinese-born Yang Wang, who is a defender increased my confidence and that motivated me to do better in subsequent matches. The coaches, teammates, friends and family as well as the president of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) contributed immensely to my good outing in Rio and I will like to thank everyone that contributed to this great journey of my career,” he added.

Recalling his feeling during the matches, he said: “After the victory against the world number seven, Chinese Taipei’s Chuang Chih-Yuan, my mind was totally free that Germany’s Timo Boll will also fall if I confronted him in the fourth round. I had to play the German the same way I played against Chuang Chih-Yuan and this boosted my confidence throughout the competition. So I felt great after the matches because playing against these world class players was like a dream come true. I was actually looking up to some of these players particularly whenever I am watching their videos.”

He, however, lamented the idea of training in Nigeria before the games but said: “Training in Nigeria did not help my situation in Rio but my 10-month experience in Portugal and France with different coaches helped me a lot. Also, Segun Toriola helped me as well by telling me the weaknesses of every opponent because he is familiar with most of them. In training, Toriola’s advice really helped me to change my tactics positively and he was always there for me

Toriola helped me in training and his advice really changed my tactics positively. I can confirm that I have gained a lot from his wealth of experience and seeing him, while playing added to my confidence. I can say that Toriola is a great legend of the sport.

On his quarter-final loss to world number one, China’s Ma Long, the 2014 ITTF Star Player said: “I was not disappointed with my performance against Ma Long because I had nothing to lose against him and I was not really scared of him. In the first instance, he is a much better player but I did not put that in my mind before the match started. I took on Ma Long the way I confronted my previous opponents. But Ma Long was too strong for me as I could not respond very well but I strongly believed that when next I play against him I will win one set at least.”

For his heroic feat, Quadri became the toast of the Brazilian fans and this he described as encouraging, “I must say that the Brazilians showed me love and they always motivated and encouraged  me that I could do it. The kind of support I got from them is like the support I am always getting in my home country. They kept me going whenever I was losing hope by echoing my name. They made me feel at home and I remain grateful to them for this.”

Quadri is eagerly looking forward to the new ranking, which he said: “This is a new positive improvement and I am waiting for the next world ranking. When I rose to top 30 two years ago, I was under serious pressure to maintain my ranking because it had never happened to me. After some time the pressure went away and I am now getting used to playing under pressure. But this time around I am not going to be playing under pressure in order to maintain my new status. I also need more support to play more tournaments so that I can keep my place in the world ranking without dropping down the ladder. I am fully ready to work harder than before and may God continue to crown all my efforts with successes,” Quadri added.

Quadri who will be representing Africa at the ITTF World Cup in Germany come |October believes attending Rio Olympic Games is part of his build up to the global tournament.

“Every tournament is like preparing for another tournament and my performance in Rio has really boosted my confidence that I can do better at the World Cup. My World Cup preparation has started at the Rio Olympic Games and I have been able to test my ability against the world’s best. It is just two months to the championship, I will prepare better when I get to my club in Europe. I strongly believe that my best is yet to come and I am praying for luck and getting favourable draw in Germany. I strongly believe that I can still do better than before,” he explained.

He, however, said that he hopes that his Rio outing would inspire more African players to aim for medal at global level. My performance in Rio will surely boost the confidence level of many African players to do so much better in future. I strongly believe that there will be rapid improvement in Africa soon and more talents will come through in the continent. We have great talents in almost everywhere in Africa and very soon we will all see them.”
For Quadri, his cherished moment in Rio was claiming victory against former world number one, Germany’s Timo Boll.
