    Oyo, Aseyin hail Adegoke’s educational contributions

    Oyo State Government and the Aseyin of Iseyinland, Oba Sefiu Oyebola Adeyeri have commended the Aare-Egbe Omo Balogun of Ibadanland, Olooye Adegboyega Adegoke for his contribution to educational development in the State.

    The commendation followed the commissioning of six blocks of classrooms constructed for Koso Community Grammar School, Iseyin by Olooye Adegoke.

    Speaking during the commissioning, Hon. Shakirat Hamzat, the Chairperson of School Governing Board (SGB) Koso Community Grammar School said the state government and the entire board are grateful to Olooye Adegboyega Adegoke for his kind heartedness towards Koso Community Grammar School.

    She said: “I find it quintessential that Olooye Adegoke has the educational progress of his alma-mater at heart. Your philanthropic mind is worthy of note and it serves as a means of cushioning the state government’s goals for education.

    “On behalf of the good people of Oyo State and Iseyin land, the Kabiyesi, His Royal Highness, Oba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola Ajirotutu l, we say thank you for bringing a new turn to Koso Community Grammar School, Iseyin”.

    While commissioning the classrooms, the Aseyin of Iseyin, commended Olooye Adegoke for setting the pace of development in the school.

    The monarch thanked the philanthropist for remembering the school by donating a block of six classrooms despite the fact that he had left the place many years ago.

    Oba Oyebola said government alone cannot carried out the task of developing education in the state, saying there must be supports by members of the society.

    He called on other old students of the school and well meaning indigenes of Oyo state to emulate the kind gesture of Adegoke, saying such gestures will make life comfortable for students and staff and will provide a conducive environment for learning.

    “I am encouraging everybody that have passed through this school and others to come back and support this initiative”.

    Adegoke said government alone cannot tackle the task of educational development in Oyo State and has therefore called for the support of the old students as well as the well-to-do individuals in the state to lend hands of support to the government.

    He said the donation of the block of classrooms to his alma-mater, is his own little way of supporting the government in the development of education in Oyo State.

    According to him: “It is always good to give back to your alma mater and to support the government efforts in the development of education in our state.

    “Government alone cannot do everything, we have to support the government. The old Students have to support the government. The Community and the well-to-do in the society have to support the government. And that is why I came here to support the school and also to support the learning of the students.

    “Sometimes in the past I dug a borehole for the school just to support the students and the staff and ensure that they are learning and teaching in a comfortable atmosphere. That was done years back.

    “I thank God for what is happening today and what God has used me for, to help in the educational development of my state”.

    “Though I am from Ibadan, I had my Secondary education in Iseyin here. I had my Advanced Level education at Federal Government College, Ogbomoso and my Primary School education at Ibadan. I have been to all the zones in Oyo state and I can say that I understand the peculiarities of each of the zones of the state”.

    ‘Let court decide who to coronate as new Aseyin’

    The ruling houses, which produced the first to 11th Aseyin of Iseyin, Ogbolu and Oluwole lineages, have urged Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to suspend the planned presentation of staff of office to the new Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Semiu Oyebola, on December 14, pending the determination of a suit instituted against his selection and nomination.

    The suit was instituted in an Oyo State High Court sitting in Iseyin April. It was slated for hearing on June 20, but the hearing could not hold as the judge was assigned to serve in an election petition in another state, thereby stalling progress on the suit.

    In August, however, Oba Oyebola was nominated by the kingmakers as the new Aseyin of Iseyin.

    For the completion of the process, the governor announced approval of Oyebola’s nomination in November when the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, announced that the monarch’s coronation has been slated for December 14, 2023.  Iseyin is now agog in preparation for the ceremony.

    But in a letter to the governor on Friday, the ruling houses reminded him of the pendency of the suit challenging Oyebola’s nomination, and urged him to suspend the planned coronation in the interest of justice and rule of law.

    The suit was filed by Princes Abdulhaniy Oladeni Bolanle and Moshood Adelabu on behalf of Ogbolu and Oluwole lineages.

    In the letter by their lawyer Mr. A. G. Adeniran, the claimants contended that the state government should be conscious of the pendency of a suit no:  HOI/04/2023 before the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Iseyin, over the contest for the stool of the ancient town.

    The claimants filed a motion ex parte and motion on notice for interlocutory injunction restraining the governor and kingmakers from approving Oyebola as the new Aseyin of Iseyin and even filling the vacant stool pending the determination of the suit.

    The claimants are seeking “a declaration that under the native law and custom of Yoruba land, and of Iseyin in particular, it is the descendants of the founder of a town that are entitled to produce the traditional ruler of that town;

    “a declaration that it is the family of the claimants who are the descendants of Ogbolu, the founder of Iseyin and whose family produced the 1st to 11th Aseyins of Iseyin who are entitled to produce Aseyins of Iseyin;

    “an order directing the defendants to fill the vacancy now existing in the Aseyin of Iseyin chieftaincy by inviting the family of the claimants to present the next candidates for appointment as the Aseyin of Aseyin;

    “an order of this Honourable Court setting aside the 1964 Aseyin of Iseyin Chieftaincy Declaration, which recognised the three ruling houses of Akande, Olugbile and Majaro which are not descendants of Ogbolu, the founder of Iseyin and which are not the lineal descendants of the 1st to 11th Aseyins of Iseyin for being contrary to native law and custom of Yorubaland and of Iseyin in particular;

    “an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from nominating, selecting, appointing or approving the appointment of anyone who is not from the family of the claimants as the next Aseyin of Iseyin;

    “an order of this Honourable Court setting aside any purported nomination, selection, appointment or approval of appointment or any other step that has been taking by any of the defendants to appoint anyone who is not from the family of the claimants as the next Aseyin of Iseyin.”

    Other respondents in the suit are the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the kingmakers, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mogaji Amusa Ariori on behalf of the ruling houses that produced Oyebola and Ismaheel Odubiyi on behalf of kingmakers.
