Nigeria won’t break up, says Ashafa

The Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing, Lands and Urban Development, Gbenga Ashafa, yesterday said Nigeria will not break up, despite the challenges it is facing.

The senator was responding to the rumour that the country may soon break up as a result of the incessant insecurity challenges in parts of the country.

Speaking at his constituency office through his Media Officer, Mr Babatunde Adegunju, the senator said: “Nigeria will not break up, despite diverse challenges currently facing it.”

Ashafa described the current national challenges as expected towards nation-building.

The senator added that they are not signs of disintegration, as expressed in some quarters.

He said: “Nigeria, at the moment, is going through a whole lot of hardship as a result of insecurity, high rate of unemployment and inadequate power supply, among others. Despite all these inadequacies, Nigeria still remains united.”

  • Ashafa lifts women with N10m

The lawmaker representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, has empowered some needy women in the five Local Government Areas and 11 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in his constituency.

Not less than 300 women benefitted from the scheme, which the senator held on Saturday to mark the International Women’s Day. Ashafa gave the traders about N10 million, which was shared according to the size of their businesses.

Many traders flocked the presentation venues in the council chamber of Epe Local Government Area and Noforija Hall in Eredo LCDA.

Dignitaries at the events included the Chairman of Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale; Epe division ACN chair, Chief Lanre Rasaq; Chairman, Epe local government, Hon. Jamiu Agbaje; his Eredo counterpart, Hon. Sabiu Adelaja and Alhaji Anifowose Dengel, an ACN chieftain from Kosofe.

Ajomale praised the senator for helping the traders with the financial scheme, noting that empowerment of women was tantamount to empowering the society. He said the scheme was a confirmation that ACN remained a party that cared for the grassroots.

He said: “Nobody gave Ashafa the benefit of the doubt when he approached our party with his intention to go to the senate. Because of his civil service background, people thought he would not perform as politicians would do. But he disappointed those people. Everywhere in Lagos East, everybody feels the Ashafa’s programmes from Ikorodu, Imota, Agbowa, Ikosi-Ejirin, to Epe, Somolu, Ibeju Lekki and all areas that fall under his jurisdiction.” Ajomale said the Ashafa had performed beyond peoples’ expectation.

Speaking in Yoruba language, Ashafa said he gave because he felt the pains some of the women passed through after obtaining bank loans to start business without success. Recalling his mother’s challenges as gold merchant in Sandgross market in Lagos Island, the senator said he knew how disgraceful it could be when traders could not pay back bank loans.

He said: “I made women empowerment as one of my cardinal programmes when I was elected two years ago. In loyalty to the cause and to make our mothers successful in their business, this scheme is organised to celebrate our women in a day such as International Women’s Day. I am not saying that the money given out today will be enough to solve all challenges they face, but I believe it will help greatly in changing their condition and help their businesses in one way or the other.”

Ashafa said he believed in human capital development, which was he embarked on giving scholarships to indigent pupils and empowering women and youth of his senatorial districts.

Mrs Rashidat Ojikutu, a food stuff trader in Ikorodu, said: “This is a lifeline to help my business. Thank God this is not a loan. I will use the money to buy more goods and the profit I will make from it will be used to buy more goods.”

Another beneficiary, Mrs Dorcas Ajayi, thanked Ashafa for helping her crumbling charcoal business. She said: “I will forever be grateful to Senator Ashafa for this. I was thinking of where to get money to save my charcoal business but when the scheme was announced, I put down my name, not knowing that I will benefit from it.”

  • Tinubu, Ashafa endow N2m at MOCPED

Senators Oluremi Tinubu, and Senator Olugbenga Bariyu Ashafa, representing Lagos Central and Lagos East Constituencies at the National Assembly, have endowed N1 million each to the Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), Noforija-Epe, Lagos.

The duo announced the N2 million endowment when they visited the college to present the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) special intervention approval letter to the management of MOCPED. The fund, valued at N109 million, is for building the School of Primary Education Studies in the school.

Announcing the endowment, Ashafa, who spoke on their behalf, said the gesture was to show appreciation to the Lagos State government’s funding of the college as well as give their own widow’s mite.

The Provost, Prof Olu Akeusola, took the senators round two ongoing TETFUND projects for year 2011.

Senator Tinubu, praised Akeusola for his leadership style, and charisma, two qualities which she said he deploys in achieving outstanding results. Ashafa also Akeusola’s ‘midas touch’, noting that the college has experienced tremendous growth since he last visited.

Responding, Akeusola described Mrs Tinubu as a ‘leader’, and a ‘woman of valour.’ He assured that the fund would be judiciously used for the purpose it was meant.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs Omolara Erogbogbo, who represented the Special Adviser on Education, Fatai Olukoga, thanked the senators for doing a good job, especially in the education sector, for the benefit of the people of the state.

Ashafa: no disunity among ACN senators

THE Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) senator representing Lagos East, Gbenga Ashafa, yesterday debunked the rumour that there is a cold war among the party’s senators.

In a statement in Lagos, the lawmaker said ACN senators remained united and committed to effective representation of the party.

He said the party’s lawmakers would also ensure that government policies impact positively on the people they represent at the National Assembly.

Ashafa explained that the rumour was part of some publications that some ACN senators were behind the alleged removal of George Akume as Senate Minority Leader.

The lawmaker explained that as the Secretary of the ACN Senators’ Caucus Forum, he attended regular meetings where national issues were discussed for the unity of the senators.

He said: “This is a forum that brings together a group of extremely patriotic individuals that have the unique privilege to be elected by the good people of Nigeria to serve.

“As we meet regularly, issues affecting the lives of common Nigerians have been our focal point. I can’t recall anytime personal issues became an agenda or item for discussion.”
