American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) in Nigerian is celebrating its 15th anniversary in Lekki, Lagos, with activities, including a lecture. Its theme is “Building energy efficient design towards reducing consumption from the national grid.”
President, Michael Adewunmi, said the body, from 2009, has developed such that it is one of the chapters highly recognised by the parent body.
Among other gains, he said, were production of chartered professionals, and impact of the subsector on the economy.
He said there were plans to open chapters in Abuja and the six geopolitical zones.
In a message, Nigeria Society of Engineers President, Mrs Magaret Oguntala, hailed ASHRAE and sought “a strategic partnership” to boost sustainable energy use.
In a lecture, Opa Ladiga, an engineer, called for integration of traditional ways of construction with modern ideas.
He suggested the sharing of knowledge, promotion of high-performance building envelopes; good use of building materials; research into traditional/natural means of optimising materials.
Mohammed Bassel Anbari, ASHRAE director/Regional Chair ( DRC) Region at Large (RAL), also congratulated the association on the anniversary, especially for their resilience and “for continuing to rise”.

Chairman Planning Committee, Abayomi Akindele, said: “ASHRAE has over 50,000 members in more than 130 countries worldwide and just like the Nigerian chapter, the society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the engineering industry.”
“ASHRAE was founded in 1894, to advance human welfare through sustainable technology for the built environment.
“Through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s built environment.”
