  • Police arrest armed robbers in Bayelsa

    The police in Bayelsa State have arrested some suspected armed robbers, who specialised in robbing residents in Yenagoa, the state capital, using a commercial tricycle.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident on Sunday, said some of the robbers were shot during a gun battle with policemen.

    He identified one out of the four-man gang as Precious John ‘m’ 19yrs, saying he was shot on the leg and a locally-made pistol recovered from him.

    He said while the tricycle driver Abubakar Iliyasu ‘m’ 26, was arrested, the other suspects escaped with bullets wounds.

    He said: “Following reported complaints of cult activities in Yenagoa metropolis, the Commissioner of Police Bayelsa State directed the tactical teams to embark on vigorous stop and search operations and patrols within the metropolis.

    “On 17 March, 2019 at about 1150 hours, four men Armed operating in a tricycle with a locally made pistol robbed one Kelly Effiong ‘f’ at Ebis Road, Biogbolo of one Techno phone valued at N45,000, and an ITEL phone valued at N4.500.

    “On sighting a patrol team, the armed robbers engaged the policemen in a gun battle, the policemen fired back at the Armed robbers and arrested one Precious John ‘m’ 19yrs, who was shot on the leg and recover a locally made pistol.

    “The tricycle driver Abubakar Iliyasu ‘m’ 26 years, was also arrested, the other suspects escaped with bullets wounds. The command has intensified effort to arrest the fleeing suspects”.

  • Gunmen kill two policemen, injure one

    Unidentified gunmen at the weekend killed two policemen and injured another in separate incidents that occurred in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

    It was gathered that the gunmen in one of the incidents attacked a policeman attached to a popular supermarket in Amarata area of the capital city.

    They were said to have killed the lone policeman, snatched his AK47 riffle and robbed the supermarket.

    The activities of the hoodlums created panic in the area and forced many people to run to different places for safety.

    The supermarket, which was robbed twice, last year, could not open for business on Saturday after the incident.

    In the second incident, gummen stormed the Udeme Hotels along D. S. P Alamesiagha road in Yenagoa, attacked two of the policemen guarding the facility.

    They reportedly killed one of the policemen and injured another as they tried in vain to steal police riffles.

    It was gathered that the injured policeman engaged the gunmen at gun duel and stopped them from stealing the riffles.

    A source, who spoke in confidence, said that the gunmen drove a Toyota Camry car into the hotel premises and pretended to be customers.

    “They later made a U-turn and drove towards the gate where they opened fire on the policemen”, the source said.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Butswat, confirmed the development saying it occurred at 9pm on Friday.

    He said:  “On 15 March, 2019, at about 2100hours, unknown gunmen operating in a Toyota Camry car, registration number unknown, went to a Hotel at Opolo, Yenagoa and without provocation open fire at the two Policemen on duty.

    “The policemen fired back at the Armed robbers and in the ensuing gun battle, one sergeant was fatally wounded, he was rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead. The other Policeman is responding to treatment.

    “The unknown gunmen escaped with bullets wounds. Based on a tip-off a notorious criminal hideout was raided, where their cohorts were arrested and they have volunteered useful information. Efforts have been intensified to arrest the gunmen.”

  • Police dismiss Sergeant for killing 20-year-old undergraduate

    The Bayelsa Police Command on Wednesday said it has dismissed a Police Sergeant who shot and killed a 20 year-old undergraduate, Tariela Nikadae, on Nov. 23.

    Asinim Butswat, Spokesman of the Command, who told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Yenagoa, added that the sergeant would soon be arraigned in court.

    The incident happened during a police raid and detention of residents by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Command.

    The detained residents were later screened and freed by the Police following intervention of their relatives.

    “The Bayelsa State Police Command regrets the unfortunate incident involving a Police Officer and a resident of Tenacious Road, Edepie, Yenagoa.

    “Sergeant Timadi Emmanuel attached to a patrol team of Akenfa Division, while on patrol at Tenacious Road, Edepie, under questionable circumstances shot one Tariela Nikade, male, aged 20.

    “The Policeman has been dismissed after preliminary investigations into the incident and he will be prosecuted as soon as investigations are concluded,” Butswat said.

    Meanwhile, residents have continued to lament the harassment and assault of members of the public.

    Several victims of the arrest told NAN that the policemen did not screen them or listen to their explanations before the arrest and detention.

    Mr Prosper Jacobs, who was arrested alongside many others on Thursday night, said that he was assaulted and bruised for pleading.

    “The team just packed their van on our street at Ebis Mechanic Road, Amarata. When they wanted to force me into their van, I insisted on knowing what my offence was and they assaulted me and left me afterwards with injuries.

    “Many others were then taken away in the van and detained overnight; their relatives have to intervene before they were freed,” Jacobs said.

    Another victim, Michael Gibson, a civil servant said that he was arrested when he went to buy recharge cards in Amarata area of Yenagoa.

    “They never cared to listen to any explanations, I told them that I am a teacher and they could verify my claim from my neighbours, but they took me and others and locked us up,” he said.

  • Man burns teenager’s face with hot iron over N3000

    A man identified as Effiong Sunday drawn the ire of residents in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, after he used hot electric iron on a 13-year-old girl.

    Sunday, who hails from Akwa Ibom, but lives on Brass Street, Etegwe, Yenagoa, is said to be the uncle of the teenager.

    It was gathered that the girl was accused of stealing N3000 belonging to their next-door neighbour but the girl was said to have repeatedly denied the allegation.

    An eyewitnesses, Omubo Bipre, said despite the denials of the girl, her uncle subjected to unimaginable physical abuse using hot pressing iron.

    Narrating the incident, he said: “On Tuesday 5th September 2018, the little girl was accused of stealing N3000 from her next door neighbor. After questioning and interrogation from her uncle, Mr. Sunday Effiong, the little girl said she didn’t steal any money.

    “The uncle insisted that she must tell him the truth and he started beating her up mercilessly. Later he removed her cloths and started burning her with a hot pressing Iron that she must tell him the whereabout of the money.

    “According to the little girl, he continued to burn her face and breast with the hot pressing Iron and she accepted she stole the money under duress.

    “The painful side of the story is that the neighbor eventually found his money where he kept it.

    “Despite the injuries he inflicted on the little girl, her uncle didn’t bother to take her to the hospital for treatment.

    On Friday 7 September, neighbours started frowning and spreading the story after seeing the injuries on the girl.

    “The information got to Mr. Numoipre Benson Ayah, Tony Owei Angagha and my humble self and we decided to see what we could do to help the little girl.

    “We contacted Do Foundation, an NGO that is into child abuse and other related matters chaired by Dise Ogbesi Sheila and her second Excel Bright.

    “The little girl was taken to the Ekeki police station. Mr Sunday Effiong and his wife were invited for interrogation by the Gender Desk Office.

    “The little girl is now receiving treatment in the hospital courtesy of Do Foundation

    When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident and identified the victim as Christiana Ita.

    He said Sunday and the teenager hail from hailed from Oruko in Akwa Ibom State identifying the object used in the teenager as electric iron.

    Butswat said: “The object used on the victim is electric iron. The police are investigating the incident”.

  • Bayelsa: Police confirm theft of three-year-old twins

    The Police Command in Bayelsa has confirmed the theft of a set of  three-year-old twins on Monday by unknown persons at a motor park in Yenagoa.

    The Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Yenagoa.

    Butswat said the incident occurred at Ekeki Motor Park in Yenagoa Local Government Area and that it had been officially reported to the command.

    “According to the report, the assailants stole the babies and ran to an unknown destination.

    “We have alerted our tactical team for investigations and the perpetrators will be brought to book,” he said.

    Narrating the incident to NAN, the victims’ eldest sister, Fumi, said it took place at a time their mother, Mrs Modupe Joseph, went to a mini market in the area to buy salt.

    She said, “Our mummy went to Etegwe-Tombia area of Yenagoa to buy salt to cook corn.

    “The four of us were left in the custody of one Aisha Ahmed at the motor park.

    “Suddenly, one man approached me and gave me N200 to buy food for my siblings but I refused and told him that we have already eaten,” she said.

    Modupe said that the man persisted and made her to collect the money and proceeded to buy the food.

    “Unfortuntely, before I could return, the man had carried my twin brothers away,” she said.

    She said that the assailant came in a black Sienna bus, which he parked nearby.

  • JAMB begins screening of police applicants in Bayelsa

    The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) is set to commence the screening of successful applicants shortlisted for police recruitment in Bayelsa State.

    A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Butswat, Tuesday confirmed that the applicants would be screened via an examination to be conducted by JAMB.

    Butswat said a list containing the names of the successful applicants was out adding that the screening would take place between May 7 to 12 at the Police Officers’ Mess in Yenagoa.

    He said: “The Bayelsa State Police Command wishes to inform the general public, that the names of candidates who applied for recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force  is out.

    “Succesful Applicants should report at the Police Officers Mess for screening from Monday, 7 May, 2018 to Saturday, 12 May 2018, by 0800hrs daily.

    “The shortlisted candidates are to be screened via examination to be conducted by Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB).

    “Candidates are to turn up neatly dressed in white T- shirts and white shorts with original certificates.

    “Candidates are advised to conduct themselves in an orderly manner throughout the duration of the exercise”.

  • Cultists kill commercial tricyclist in Bayelsa

    Cultists operating as thugs in the popular Tombia Market, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, have stabbed a commercial driver of a tricyclist, Keke Napep, to death in their failed attempt to rob him.

    The police, Thursday, said the suspects attempted to rob the victim, who hailed from the north, but killed him for resisting them.

    It was gathered that the killing caused tension in the area, forcing traders to close shops and run to different directions for safety.

    Colleagues and kinsmen of the victim were said to have gone berserk and later stabbed a youth they believed was one of the suspects to death.

    Fear of reprisal spread but the Central Zone leadership of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC),     the Bayelsa Volunteers and security agencies immediately intervened to restore order.

    The IYC Chairman, Mr. Tare Porri, immediately led a delegation to meet the kinsmen of the victim and sympathise with them.

    Porri asked them to remain calm and resist the temptation of taking laws into their own hands adding that crimes had no colour and tribe.

    He, however, complained about the nefarious activities of suspected thugs in the market who were fond of extorting money from Keke operators and other innocent people.

    “In this particular case they tried to extort money from the victim. But he told them he had no money because he just came out for business.

    “They got angry and stabbed him to death. If not because of our prompt intervention, it would have led to further bloodshed. We appeal to all the people in the state to remain calm and stop taking laws into their hands whenever there is provocation”, he said.

    Porri appealed to security agencies especially the police to maintain presence in the market to stop harassment of innocent people by thugs.

    The Chairman of the Bayelsa Volunteer Service, Mr. Douye Koroye, condemned the killing of the commercial driver describing it as barbaric.

    Koroye, who is also the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youths urged youths to quit crime and take advantage of various opportunities created by the state government to make decent living.

    He commiserated with the deceased family  and asked security agencies to investigate the incident and bring the suspected cultists to justice.

    He said: “We call on the youths to be law-abiding, patriotic and responsible. Our governor has shown capacity to develop the youths. This is a youth government and we advise the youths to desist from crime and take advantage of the opportunities created for them by the government.

    “We warn that persons, who engage in cultism, are risking their lives. We have a new law in the state that stipulates stringent punishments for them. Cultists should renounce their membership now and embrace peace”.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said some persons had been identified and would soon, be arrested for investigations.

    He asked kinsmen of the victim to maintain the peace adding that persons who committed the heinous crime would face prosecution.

  • Police arrest taxi drivers for raping, robbing victim

     

    The police have nabbed two taxi drivers for raping and robbing their female passenger in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

    The suspects identified as Nathan Ogbara, 33 and Justin Amos, 32 were arrested at Tombia Roundabout Yenagoa while fleeing the crime scene.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Butswat, said the mobile handset of the victim was recovered from the suspects.

    He said: “On 1st April 2018, at about 0200hrs, police were alerted that a young girl was sexually assaulted and her phone was stolen from her by two men operating a taxi, at opposite Jubilee hotel, Kpansia, Yenagoa.

    “The victim ‘name withheld’ ‘f’ 22 years, reported that she contacted one Nathan Ogbara ‘m’ 33 years a taxi driver to drop her at her house at Agudama Epie, after she participated in a dance competition at a car wash.

    “The suspect, called one Justin Amos ‘m’ 32 years also a taxi driver to joined him. Along the road, opposite Jubilee hotel, the suspects parked their cars and dragged the girl to a nearby bush and raped her. They took her GSM phone and zoomed off towards Tombia Roundabout.

    “Consequently, a police patrol team arrested the suspects and recovered the stolen GSM handset. Their taxis have been impounded and investigation is ongoing.

    “In a bid to rid Bayelsa State  of criminal elements, the Command Strike Force Team and other Tactical teams introduced by the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command CP Don Awunah, are yielding positive results, as the response time to distress calls has been drastically reduced.

    “Members of the public are advised to promptly report any incident to the police, as the police command poised  to reduced crime to the bearest minimum in the state”.

    The Police Command in Bayelsa on Tuesday said it had arrested a suspected cult member and pipeline vandal, Temona Alison, that had been operating in the state.

    The Spokesman of the command, DSP Asinim Butswat, disclosed this in a statement which he made available to newsmen in Yenagoa.

    Butswat said four hand grenades, one live cartridge, a pair of military uniform, one machete and one SIM card were recovered from the suspect.

    “On 4th Feb, 2018 at about 1 p.m., the Bayelsa State Command Strike Force, a team that specialised in tracking down wanted criminals, arrested one Temona Boleigha Alison ‘m’ based on a tip-off.

    “The suspect was arrested in possession of four hand grenades; one live cartridge; a pair of military uniform; one machete; one SIM card and twelve wraps of substance suspected to be cocaine.

    “The suspect is undergoing a thorough interrogation,” he said.

    Police shoot suspected cultist on Christmas eve

    The Police Command in Bayelsa said its operatives had shot and wounded a suspected cultist who later died in hospital, in response to a distress call on Christmas eve

    The Spokesman of the command, DSP Asinim Butswat, told newsmen in Yenagoa on Wednesday that the incident took place at Obele Area of Ovom in Yenagoa.

    “On December 24 2017, at about 2100 hours, Policemen responded to distress call of cult activities at Arieta lane, Yenagoa.

    “The team of Policemen responded swiftly and on sighting the Police, the cultists opened fire on the team.

    “In the ensuing gun battle, one Thankgod James Indoni, aged 23, a suspected cultist, was shot, he was subsequently arrested and taken to Federal Medical Centre for treatment where he later died.

    “Efforts have been intensified to arrest his cohorts and bring them to book,” Butswat said.

    He said that earlier reports that a policeman was shot and killed in error by a fellow policeman was false and misleading.

    “Contrary to media reports that a Policeman mistakenly shot a colleague, the command wants to categorically state that the report was false and misleading.

    Butswat said the command had worked tirelessly to ensure crime-free Christmas festivities across the state.

    He also said that the command had intensified patrol and surveillance to provide a peaceful atmosphere for residents to enjoy the holidays.

    The police spokesman urged the residents to continue with their lawful endeavours and support the police by providing timely and credible information on criminal activities.

    “I also urge them to continue to enjoy the Christmas celebration and steer clear of every criminal activity,” he said.
