  • Oshoala nets brace as Barcelona outscore Arsenal in seven-goal thriller

Asisat Oshoala scored twice for Barcelona in a 5-2 victory over her former club Arsenal in a high-profile pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old was reuniting with her former side for the first time since she left in January 2017 after a season spent with the North London side.

Before her trip to England, she had scored four goals in the Spanish giants’ back-to-back warm-up wins over Amed [13-0] and Marseille [5-0].

With the first return to Meadow Park, Oshoala shone brightly as she fired the visitors in front after Patri Guijjaro cancelled Katie McCabe’s opener before half-time.

Five minutes after the restart, the Nigerian extended the tally for Lluís Cortes’ side before Claudia Pina’s brace overshadowed Kim Little’s effort from the spot.

With today’s brace, Oshoala has now scored six goals in three matches for the Liga Iberdrola side – fantastic form she will hope to take into the new season which begins on September 8.

The win over the English champions placed Barcelona in a great mood as they continue their pre-season against French top-flight side Montpellier on Sunday.

  • 2019 FIFA WWC: My players followed the match plan — Dennerby

The Nigeria women’s coach Thomas Dennerby has praised his players for their solid display in their 2-0 win over South Korea in Grenoble.

The Super Falcons came into the contest with hopes of bouncing back from their 3-0 loss to Norway in their first tie last Saturday in Reims.

At Stade des Alpes, Asisat Oshoala’s second-half strike and Kim Doyeon’s own goal gave the African champions their first 2019 Women’s World Cup win on Wednesday.

While lauding his ladies on sticking to the match plan, the coach believes they have a good chance if they can replicate their form against France.

“Today our discipline was better than against Norway – no mistakes at all,” Dennerby told the media.

“If we can be as compact as we were today, don’t let teams overplay us in midfield and find passes through, we know we’ll get opportunities for players like Asisat.

“The players followed our match plan and that’s all you can really ask. Now we go to play France, a really good team. If we can come out with a point everyone would be extremely happy.

“But you can’t just go to defend – you need to know what to do when you win the ball back.

And hopefully, we can have a little bit of success.”

The win means Nigeria are third on the Group A log with three points and will hope to wrap up their group stage outing with a fine result against the hosts, Les Bleus on Monday.

  • I am not under pressure, says Oshoala

Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala says she is not under any pressure ahead of Nigeria’s 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup opener against Norway on June 8.

The former Arsenal and Liverpool striker did not make an impact that fans are used to seeing at the 2018 AWCON, scoring three goals, all coming in the 6-0 rout of Equatorial Guinea, and did not win an individual accolade at the end of the tourney in Ghana.

Oshoala impressed in the second half of last season at Barcelona and the Spanish side has turned the loan into a permanent deal after netting 8 goals in 11 competitive matches.

“I am not under any pressure, I’m just going there to have fun, I’m not looking for a club or whatever. I am just going to the World Cup to have fun and help the team and give 100 per cent, do the best I can,” said Oshoala.

“The goals were not just coming in the Nations Cup which is normal, sometimes you get a goal, sometimes you just help the team, so you don’t have to score all the time. Scoring in Barcelona, probably I am getting it right, sometimes it happens like this.”

She added: ”For me, its one step at a time, we go by each game. The first game against Norway, the second game against Korea, third game against France and then we pick it up from there. After the group stage, we know what’s next.”

The Super Falcons have departed the Avita Resort in Bad Tatzmannsdorf in Austria, where they were on two-week residential camping, and landed in Reims yesterday, venue of their World Cup opener against Norway.

The Super Falcons’ star is making the most of her loan spell from her Chinese club.

After her impressive outing at the Cyprus Women’s Cup where she scored twice to help the Super Falcons finish sixth, the three-time African Player of the Year was given her third league start by the Spanish giants.

She, however, did not disappoint as she put the Catalonia Girls in front after just 18 minutes when her fierce shot from outside the box flew past the goalkeeper to register a 1-0 lead.

After a below-par outing at the 2018 AWCON in Ghana, Oshoala has rediscovered her shooting boots and her goals are now expected to propel the Falcons at the Women’s World Cup in France in June.
