Ambode to host world Igbo Day

The stage is set as the Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode hosts world Igbo day in Lagos following the commencement of the celebration in Enugu on Thursday.

The president of Lagos state chapter of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Fabian Onwughalu said all necessary preparation have been made to mark the world Igbo day celebration taking place in October in a dynamic way as big tycoons such as the governors from Anambra and Enugu state, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other top dignitaries are expected to grace the occasion.

Similarly, Onwughalu noted that Ifeanyi Ubah, the former governorship aspirant for Anambra State in 2013 election is expected to be the guest speaker of the day, alongside the president of Coscharis Motors, Dr. Cosmas Maduku is also expected to be there as they have received confirmation to the invitations sent out.

The event is expected to address both common and internal interest including the celebration and preservation of the Igbo culture and Heritage.

The president of Ohaneze Ndigbo also said that the Igbos in Lagos are been neglected by the present administration as none of them were considered a member of Ambode’s cabinet despite owning 50 percent of the lands in Lagos, but however pleaded with governor Akinwunmi Ambode to grant certificate of Occupancy to the landlords so as to build their confidence.

The woman leader of the group, Chidozie Ada Ofoegbu said the women are fully ready for the event as all plans have been made. Part of which include displaying and presentation of various cultural dance steps, presentation of the Kola nut and many other things.

  • Youths endorse Tinubu as Yoruba Leader

The Oodua Youth Movement (OYM) has pronounced All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as leader of the Yoruba race due to his various contributions to democracy in Nigeria.

The group said the pronouncement became imperative as since the demise of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Pa Adekunle Ajasin and Chief Abraham Adesanya, nobody has been able to provide purposeful leadership and unite the Yoruba race.

Speaking at a press conference held in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the National President of the group, Comrade Olalekan Owolabi, said since the death of these famous Yoruba leaders, Yoruba people, especially the youths, have been living like a herd of sheep without a shepherd.

Owolabi said, considering how Tinubu has been discovering the best among the younger generation of the Yoruba people and presenting them for leadership, he is qualified to fill the leadership vacuum in Yoruba land.

The group said it is also impressed with the way the new Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi is pursuing peace and unity among the traditional rulers.

OYM, however, urged all Yoruba leaders to close ranks in the interest of the race.

Considering this, it is our view that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is qualified to fill the leadership vacuum left behind.

  • Tinubu: A deserving Man of the Year

When The Sun newspaper announced its prestigious MAN OF THE YEAR personality, it was no surprise that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was named. In Nigeria of today, Tinubu is a subject. Many great word-works have been done to eulogise the personality of the man that rose to the peak of his calling on self-belief, sagacity, decorum, vision and divinely mobilised force beyond human comprehension. I mean God is involved with Tinubu like my popular slogan.

No more beautiful words can be used to paint a man that has been described as “a kingmaker, courageous and fearless political General, patriot, motivator, strategic thinker, risk taker, grand master of grassroots politicking, humanist, visionary leader, crowd puller; a crusader for change, the enthronement of the rule of law, electoral reforms, justice, good governance and development; and a great apostle of power, which, in his view, is never served a la cart.” He was also described as a man that is “always exuding charisma, carriage, dignity and honour, an indomitable opposition leader, a man endowed with sheer organisational ability, mobilisation prowess, uncommon acumen, masterful logic, foresight, and the most colourful politician in the post-Awolowo era.”

John Quincy Adams said Leadership is practiced in attitude and action rather than words. Tnubu, beyond reasonable doubt, has been reckoned with by our history. The son of late Iyaloja General, like Alexander the Great, has cut the Gordian knot of Nigeria’s political warfare, overcoming all odds to assume greatness pronounced by the people and his achievements rather than by himself; like Alexander, Tinubu smells great.

Among several gifts in political philosophy, Tinubu is master of the art of timing as described by Robert Greene. He organised all opposition flanks into a formidable strength to give the ruling federal the fight of the century. Succeeding on the strength of purpose, he saw the political tide of our country’s power system and stood to fight alone as an Alliance Democracy (AD) Governor when others fell like pack of cards to the decoy of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2003 general election.

By 2007, he has re-built the political relics of the South West Nigeria to emerge as formidable opposition that gave the federal a stunt fight and defeated PDP’s 16 years’ reign. He was the last man standing liberator of the South West and the nation for progressive politics. Tinubu defied momentary glory and risked everything to choose heroism, honour and glory to death as against glamour and glorification offered to him on the platter of gold by the oppressing ruling.

Tinubu is great in much ratification. If leadership is truly about unlocking people’s potential to become better, no living political leader in Nigeria is near Tinubu’s achievements talking about organised followership and leadership breed.

After the demise of Obafemi Awolowo, Tinubu is the outstanding Yoruba Leader to have profoundly shape and dictate the pendulum of Nigerian Politics from a regional route. Tinubu brought to a close the search for a successor or a clone that can best fit in to the legacies of Awo. Having several resemblances with Obafemi Awolowo, Tinubu takes a step further in his leadership style that demolished the barrier wall and built access and smooth relationship between him and those who follow him on one hand and between him and the common man on the other hand. Described as the King of Bourdillon, no individual of whatever low class is barred from accessing Tinubu’s political empire.

Harping the greatness of Asiwaju, the incorruptible General found solace in the maestro to piggy-back on his political acumen to achieve long dreaded ambition of becoming the President of Nigeria. Like every great leader, Tinubu rode on all odds and stumbling blocks set against him to greatness. From political exile in the military era to certificate racketing allegation; the code of conduct trial, the saga that witnessed creation of additional local governments in Lagos; the organised fight against Asiwaju by agitators for Yoruba leadership position, threat and offer by the Goodluck Jonathan government and the airing of satanic ‘Lion of Bourdillon documentary’ meant to destroy him and destabilise the opposition front at the peak of 2015 general election. He is a tested leader who has surpassed most difficult challenges in this era. He has fought several battles and won.

The CHANGE project that led to dislodgement of the erstwhile largest party in Africa alone qualifies Asiwaju to be MAN OF THE DECADE. To all players and gladiators, going to the moon was easier. From the South West Nigeria, he raced towards South-South; with a swift turn off the East, he conquered North Central, North West and North East in his political ideology. Everyone bowed to the COMMON SENSE REVOLUTION as authored by the Jagaban. His post CHANGE battle has started clearing the East in the relics of that great political combat. Tinubu, the conqueror!

The wife of the president, Hajia Aisha Buhari, once praised Tinubu for his selflessness and sacrifices which enabled the actualisation of her husband’s 10-year presidential quest. If Jagaban had given Goodluck Jonathan support, the game would have been different, but he chose to be on the path of the common man. As a divinely anointed one by God, everyone who attempted to fight Tinubu’s greatness has ended up becoming nobody; the records are there for researchers.

I cannot close without mentioning Bola Tinubu’s passion for greatness of our fatherland. Beyond what many people knew, Tinubu has unbridled passion for Nigeria’s greatness and emancipation. Little did people know that the Jagaban was a successful Chicago-trained auditor with Shell Petroleum before entering politics fully. He had studied philosophy of the founding fathers of Nigerian nation, with history of greatest men in the world. He was prominent in the fight for actualisation of June 12 election won by the late Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola but which was annulled by the Babangida-led military junta. Tinubu didn’t come to leadership by accident.

The words of Oliver Tambo truly represent what Tinubu stands for: “the fight for freedom must go on until it is won; until our country is free and happy and peaceful as part of the community of man, we cannot rest.”

Bola Tinubu, truly my 2015 MAN OF THE YEAR; and, of course, our country’s MAN OF THE MOMENT!

  • Classic buses for classic commuters

    Classic buses for classic commuters

LAGOS State Government has taken a major step towards easing commuters’ pains. Last Thursday; it launched 434 air-conditioned buses and inaugurated the expanded Mile 12-Ikorodu Road.

Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State, Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu performed the ceremony.

The buses, tagged BRT Classic or BRT Upgrade, according to the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Dayo Mobereola, are not owned by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), or the government, but provided by a private firm on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The government provided the infrastructure while the private operators brought in the vehicles to run according to LAMATA’s guidelines.

This, he said, is the hallmark of the new thinking and commitment of the government to providing safe, reliable, comfortable and affordable motorised options for discerning Lagosians who love comfort.

The option, according to him, became imperative due to the gridlock over the last decade. He said not only would the government improve its presence in the sector, it would also ensure the reduction of vehicles on the roads, which would in no small measure ensure cleaner air and environmental preservation, because of reduced emission of carbon-monoxide and other green house gasses into the atmosphere.

Mobereola said the new path was conceptualised in 2008, when the government began the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Scheme. He, however, admitted that “along the line we got derailed and lost that essential part of the scheme that would have attracted it to the business class and professional groups. While we concentrated attention on providing service to the masses, artisans and traders who had no opportunity and may not be able to get their own cars, we neglected to serve a critical segment who might have their cars, or have the means to buy, but may have decided against it if government had provided an alternative that is comfortable, reliable and efficient”.

He said the result was the huge deluge of private vehicles, hundreds of which are added daily by those who have the capacity to acquire private vehicles. Mobereola said the government was determined to make motorised transportation the hub of mass transit in the state, while the waterways and the light rail would be introduced to add to public transportation alternatives for residents of the state.

The BRT, which was introduced on March 17, 2008, on the Ikorodu-CMS route, Mobereola said, has to date carried no fewer than 350 million passengers, and these ones on the daily basis, will carry almost 450,000 passengers.

According to the commissioner, the new thinking is that a city with 22 million people, 60 percent of who must move from one point to the other needs efficient, reliable, accessible and safe transportation system.

Assuring Lagosians of government’s commitment, he said the Ambode administration will in the coming months flood the state with modern and comfortable BRTs adding: “this is just an example of what we planned for Lagos State”.

Transportation experts agreed no less with Mobereola, they argued that if traffic gridlocks could be felt in developed economies of the world with advanced and fully integrated modes of transportation, Lagos with wholesale reliance on the oldest mode of transportation should be expected to worsen in the next decade if government refuses to deepen its involvement and provide leadership in the sector.

Speaking on the road, the commissioner praised the people for their understanding and forbearance all through the planning and execution of the newly expanded road that now has the BRT road at the median, adding that 10 stakeholders’ fora in all were held, all to ensure the buys-in of residents.

“Managing the people while construction was going on simultaneously was a great challenge. We learnt from the mistakes of the past – mostly operational.

“We had 10 stakeholders’ fora, three before the construction work started and seven during the project. We were engaging the people at every stage and they were guiding us. It was close project that involved the community because we needed their buy-in for us to succeed.

He said the project will improve the traffic situation along that corridor. As more people enter the BRT buses, the road will be freer; we are also doing the engineering on the road, especially at the junctions to increase the capacity of the road and make the way big enough to accommodate more traffic.

He said the N30 billion project which was financed by the French Development Agency (AFD), the World Bank and the state government, would enhance the mobility of the people and reduce travel time between CMS and Ikorodu by 60 percent, reducing a journey which presently takes an average of two and half hours to 45 minutes. He said the BRT will give priority to public transport, which is a mass carrier for a lot of people.

Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikorodu Constituency 1, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade said the project will add value to the area. He, therefore, challenged the people to maintain the project to encourage the government.

The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Sotobi, praised the government for the success of the project and called for the execution of the Ipakodo jetty, which  he said would further boost the transportation initiative of the government.

Representative of Mr Yemi Adeola, the Managing Director of Sterling Bank Plc, (the financier of the buses), Mr Lanre Adesanya thanked the state government for giving the bank the opportunity to partner in making life better for the people of the state. He said the project would benefit no fewer than 4000 families directly and provide jobs for thousands more who would work as ticketers, vendors, mechanics, even as he said the bank has reduced the prevalence of cash in the system.

  • Death threat on Tinubu not mere propaganda, says APC group

A call has gone to all well-meaning Nigerians not to wave off the alleged death threat on the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as mere political propaganda.

A statement by Action Group in the Ekiti State chapter of the party, which was signed by its spokesperson, Segun Dipe, urged all Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political leanings, to hold President Goodluck Jonathan responsible should anything untoward happen to Tinubu.

The statement added, “Nothing should be put beyond the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the president’s goons in their bid to ensure that they continue in the reign of seething corruption and other numerous impunities. We must all rally together in the condemnation and fight against their evil plan and ensure that it is nipped in the bud to avoid an attendant colossal negative reprisal.”

Dipe further recalled how the APC presidential candidate, General Mohammed Buhari, escaped a well-orchestrated assassination attempt even long before he emerged as the party’s candidate.

While pleading with Nigerians not to treat the alarm with kid gloves, the group added, “Let every well-meaning Nigerian put Jonathan on actual notice, and let him read ours as an express notice, that Tinubu must not die. No, he must not. Nigeria is too fragile to be able to withstand the magnitude of attendant calamity that will befall it should such is ever attempted.”

Describing Tinubu as a political iconoclast, the group said, “Tinubu’s passion to see true democracy enthroned in the country did not just start with the present PDP-led government and he remains the foremost consistent progressive alive in Nigeria currently.

  • Tinubu petitions NBC over AIT documentary

Tinubu petitions NBC over AIT documentary

FORMER Lagos State Governor and All Progressive Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has petition the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), seeking sanctions against the Africa Independent Television (AIT) for broadcasting “derogatory and offensive” documentary against him.

The petition by his lawyer Olatunji Abayomi asked the NBC to restrain the AIT and any other media organisation from producing or reproducing the “defamatory documentary”.

Abayomi said the documentary titled “Lion of Bourdilon”, which aired on AIT between March 1 and 2, violated paragraphs 3.1.1, 3.4.2, 3.4.5 and paragraphs 5.2.1 – 5.2.22 of National Broadcasting Commission Code.

The lawyer, who described the documentary as “extremely libellous”, said the NBC should act swiftly to safeguard its integrity and secure the reputation of the media.

He noted that even though AIT wrote “sponsored” on the documentary, the television station did not reveal the identity of such sponsors, an indication that it has something to hide.

“The said documentary is offensive, derogatory, unethical, destructive, and politically motivated to serve the interest of the anonymous ‘sponsor’. You may wish to particularly note that although AIT wrote “sponsored” when broadcasting the documentary, it never during or after the broadcast revealed the “sponsors”, an indication that AIT had something to hide,” Abayomi said.

  • Soldiers lay siege to Tinubu’s home, Imo Govt House

Soldiers lay siege to Tinubu’s home, Imo Govt House

    It’s routine, says GOC

    Fashola, Junaid, Saraki  deplore action

Soldiers relaxed yesterday a three-day siege to the Ikoyi, Lagos home of All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his Media Office said.

Also yesterday, a military team stormed the Imo State Government House in Owerri, deploying an armoured tank.

The two incidents raised the fear of a crackdown on some opposition figures.

There has been a major disagreement between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Federal Government and the APC over the shift of the February 14 and 28 general elections to March 28 and April 11.

The APC has raised the alarm of a likely compromise of the military by the PDP to rig the elections. The PDP and the military have, however, denied the allegation.

In a statement yesterday, the Tinubu Media Office said: “For three straight days, the private residence of the national leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, has been under surveillance by battle-ready and helmet wearing soldiers. Numbering close to 30 and riding in three patrol vans and an army truck stationed close to the entrance of the gate to Tinubu’s house on Bourdillon Road in Ikoyi, they have become a permanent feature. Their obvious target, Tinubu himself and perhaps the hordes of politicians and visitors that visit his Bourdillon residence.

“The soldiers were first noticed on Sunday, a few minutes to 11pm in an army truck. They were stationed about 500 meters away from Tinubu’s gate. Later, they moved close to his gate as if making efforts to enter. The stern looking soldiers were around for hours on Sunday and returned on Monday to continue their surveillance. Monday night about 10.45pm, they returned to the residence in two army vans and were there throughout the night. Some of the soldiers discharged from the van and walked back and forth in front of the house and around the house in what is clearly some casing effort.

“This morning (Tuesday), two vans from the army were stationed on both sides of the house along Bourdillon Road, their missions shrouded in secrecy.”

But Tinubu said he will not be intimidated by the show of strength, intimidation and possible harassment. “I remain resolute in my advocacy and support for the rule of law. Jonathan’s government has through the service chiefs staged a coup against Nigerians and the Constitution and now wants to silence his critics. I will not be muzzled through the barrel of the gun. The guns and bullets they should use to defeat Boko Haram are now being turned against the opposition and innocent Nigerians,” he said.

Tinubu has been an unrelenting critic of the Jonathan-led PDP government. He played a pivotal role in the re-building of the Nigerian opposition and the formation of the APC.

The statement added: “The exact mission of the soldiers is not known but it fits clearly into a new pattern of intimidation of leaders of the APC and the opposition.

“It might be part of a broader plan by the Jonathan presidency to intimidate Tinubu and his political associates and scare him from making statements or building a broad coalition against the government as he did during the NADECO days.

“As the scaremongering by the army continues, Nigerians must come to the realisation that the military has abandoned its statutory role and have now been dragged into partisan politics. Nigerians and the South West should hold the Jonathan-led military responsible if any harm or danger comes to Tinubu and his family. The case of the ‘Unknown Soldier’ is too recent in our memory.”

At about 3pm yesterday, the soldiers were not on the long stretch of Bourdillon Road and its adjourning streets.

There were three Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) vans on the road.

A security guard at Tinubu’s home said he saw the army soldiers in a truck for two consecutive nights opposite the APC leader’s private residence.

He said: “They were about 50 and came in a truck.  I saw them between 11pm and 12am Saturday night and Sunday night.

“They parked at the other side of the road and spent about 30 minutes on each day.

“I don’t know what they were up to. On the second day, they left after Governor Babatunde Fashola saw them and made a call. I have not seen them again since then,” he said.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division,  Major – General Tanmi Dibi, said his men were on regular patrol across the state.

He said the Army at the weekend began its routine “show of force”, which is an exercise embarked on whenever there is election.

He debunked the allegation that soldiers laid siege to Tinubu’s residence, arguing that Governor Fashola was aware of the ongoing patrol across the state.

He said: “How can anyone accuse the army of laying a siege to Bourdillon or Asiwaju Tinubu’s place? That is most untrue. Soldiers attached to the security outfit Operation MESA and other task forces have been on general patrol across the state.

“The entire Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki are being patrolled. Even on the Mainland, my men have been patrolling. They have been keeping awake while the masses are asleep to ensure that we continue to enjoy the peace and security we have in Lagos.

“Even the governor is aware of these patrols or is he now saying he does not like the efforts being made by security agencies in the state? Is he saying they don’t like the peace and security we have been working hard to sustain?

“Politicians must endeavour to leave the army out of politics. It is not good when soldiers are doing their best and different meanings are read into their action.

“I am not saying it is not possible my men stopped at Bourdillon. There is the possibility they must have stopped there in the course of their patrol but that does not mean they have been deployed there or have invaded the place.”

  • Tinubu, Osinbajo donate N10m, food items to Kaduna crises victims

Former Lagos State Governor and National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday evening donated N10 million to victims of the 2011 post-election violence in Kaduna State.

The vice-presidential candidate of the APC, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo also donated hundreds of bags of rice and other food items to the victims.

The event, which was held briefly at Hotel 17 in Kaduna shortly after Buhari’s campaign rally, was titled: “Professor Yemi Osinbajo, APC’s vice presidential candidate celebrates the dignity of life with victims of Kaduna State crises”.

Tinubu said the money was his contribution to the victims, adding that the donation had nothing to do with the APC.

He appealed to the victims, who were drawn from Christian and Muslim communities, to remain prayerful to God and avoid any form of violence before, during and after next month’s elections.

The national leader also urged them to ensure that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was voted out to give way to what he called, “the party that knows that people are suffering, and is ready to alleviate their suffering”.

The APC founding leader said: “I am making a personal donation of N10 million to Kaduna crises victims. It is not from APC account. It is from me to you so that it can cushion your suffering.

“Please, vote for APC. Let’s strike a deal. Are you ready to vote for APC, and not to vote PDP? Please, say yes, if you agree to vote for APC during the election.”

There was a thunderous yes, from the crowd, “yes, we will vote for APC, sai Buhari, Sai Buhari, and Kaduna, Sai Mallam El-Rufai”.

Osinbajo appealed to the people to relate peacefully, irrespective of ethnic and political differences, saying that APC is not a religious party as the opponent wanted Nigerians to believe.

The crowd sang along with him, “Winner oo, winner ooo, winner ooo, we don win o, pata pata, we don win oo”.

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari said there would be security if APC was elected into offices.

He appealed to APC supporters not to take laws into their hands even when provoked.
