  • Kalu hails Tinubu at 62

Former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu has described the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as “an uncommon leader”.

Kalu said Tinubu’s ability to mobilise people was legendary.

In a statement to felicitate with Tinubu on his 62nd birthday, Kalu said the former Lagos State governor had become a phenomenon in Nigeria’s politics since the country’s return to democratic rule.

He said: “Apart from ruling Lagos State for eight years and laying the foundation for the state’s development, Tinubu’s capacity to mobilise his people for any worthy cause has shown him to be a leader in whom the people believe and who they can trust.

“Only few leaders in Nigeria command such cult-like followership as Tinubu does. These are people who have no doubt about his passion for their welfare. Despite the fact that Tinubu has had cause to change the name of his party several times, the loyalty to him by his followers has not waned over the years. Rather, it has become strengthened.

“As you clock another year, it is pertinent to wish you many more years in the service of the country and sound health in the years ahead.”

  • Nigerians must defend their votes in 2015 – Tinubu

Nigerians must defend their votes in 2015 – Tinubu

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, yesterday asked Nigerians to use their votes to determine their fate beyond 2015.

He said it is only through the democratic process that they can effect a change.

Speaking  during the 6th annual Bola Tinubu Colloquium in Lagos, the former Lagos State governor said that  the  generality of Nigerians  should be ready to vote and defend their votes  next year if they want  break the shackle of poverty once and for all.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is shameless. The number of years they have governed is meaningless to them but the votes they can steal matter to them most,” he said.

Tinubu went on: “They can’t account for the $20 billion; they keep dodging the question over the missing oil money. There is no story about the stolen money, they should account for the money.

“They steal public fund; they can’t account for it; they steal from pensioners. It is a shame.”

Also speaking at the colloquium which took place under the theme, The summit of the common  man, Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola,  said  ordinary Nigerians  should  recognise that they are the biggest stakeholders in the country.

He challenged them to lead the way in getting the country out of its present woes by voting wisely next year and beyond.

He said the common man is the biggest investor in Nigeria because he pays his taxes diligently “but the problem is that the common man has not realised that he is the biggest investor in the country. “

He said the story of the common man that was told at the gathering suggested that the top job in the country would be a difficult one for the person that emerges as President in 2015.

Fashola said:”But the common man must decide who he wants to give the top job to. He must do so with his vote by electing those who have demonstrated that, given half a change, they would deliver.

“The leader we are celebrating today comes from a humble background. He used to live in a flat somewhere in Aguda, Surulere, Lagos, which got flooded and at a different time he was a disc jokey.”

Tinubu said in his final remarks that he was looking forward to his 63rd birthday with a new government in place at the federal level next year.

Buhari, Ajimobi, Tinubu, Fayemi: unemployment on the rise

Former Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and an economist, Dr Ayo Teriba, yesterday decried the unemployment situation in the country.

They spoke at a forum organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC)in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Ajimobi saluted the APC leaders for the initiative of proffering scientific solutions to the problems of unemployment in Nigeria.

“Our decision to brainstorm on the national challenge of unemployment at this forum underscores our belief that a mental and intellectual approach to the problems would dissolve the challenge into nothingness in no long a time,” he said.

Governor Ajimobi, who described the problem of unemployment as a global one, touching many countries in various degrees, noted that Nigeria’s unemployment rate is spiraling upwards, growing at 16 per cent per year.

“We must do something urgently as a nation to reverse this trend,’’ the governor emphasized, stressing “we must be attentive to the alarm raised by a concerned citizen who warned that of all the aspects of social misery, nothing is as heart-breaking as unemployment.”

Tinubu decried the high level of insecurity in Nigeria, attributing it to the high rate of unemployment, which, he described as a time bomb that could explode, if not urgently addressed.

Tinubu, who was represented by a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, called on the leaders in the country to stop protecting their seats but rather concentrate on how to find lasting solution to insecurity and unemployment currently ravaging the country.

“The people of this country are now more determined than ever before to protect the country by way of kicking out incompetent leaders, either at the states or national level,’’ he said.

Gen. Buhari and Fayemi said there was the urgent need to tackle the unemployment and security challenges facing Nigeria.

In his lecture, Dr. Teriba noted that unemployment rate had increased three-fold in the last 15 years, with the worst increases happening between 2007 and now.

Teriba, who spoke on the topic: “Nigeria’s High Growth-High Unemployment Paradox’’, said to make democratic governance a tool for delivering economic tangible and enduring economic benefits in the future, Nigeria should make monthly employment data available before the end of each month, fix rail transportation, rethink fiscal policy, re-focus monetary policy and ensure that elected officials accept responsibilities for policy formulation and coordination.

  • Tinubu, Fashola, Aregbesola, Falana hail Beko at memorial lecture

Tinubu, Fashola, Aregbesola, Falana hail Beko at memorial lecture

Former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Lagos and Osun State Governors Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and Rauf Aregbesola as well as Lagos lawyer, Mr Femi Dalana, yesterday said Nigeria is groping in the dark and needs to be rescued.

They spoke in Lagos at a memorial symposium on the 8th anniversary of the death of rights activist, Dr. Beko Ransom-Kuti.

Tinubu spoke on a topic, titled: National Conference/Dialogue: Making Nigeria Work.

The former governor noted that the proposed National Conference of the Goodluck Jonathan administration is an attempt to hoodwink Nigerians that the conference is the panacea to the nation’s problems.

Tinubu, who was represented by Mr Bayo Onanuga, said: “A Sovereign National Conference (SNA) is an idea Dr. Beko championed during his lifetime. Several others and myself, through the Pro-National Conference Organisation (PRONACO) and similar platforms, have actively promoted, supported and advocated the idea.”

He explained that his opposition to the dialogue is anchored on principle.

“In October, 2013, after a deep review of the ‘Jonathan Conference’ proposal, I told Nigerians that the conference is not what they had advocated for,” Tinubu said.

The frontline politicians said there were contradictions and confusion that would sink the conference, even before it starts.

He said: “If the conference must be held now, we must return to the spade work already done by the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo government in the aspect of the constitutional review. Let the Jonathan government bring it out, remove the third term toxic component and set up a technical committee to examine the 118 recommendations therein.”

The chairman of the event and founder of the Oodua People Congress (OPC), Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, however, supported the conference.

The OPC leader noted that the agenda on the conference fell short of expectation.

He said: “If Beko were alive, we would have been talking of a true national conference based on ethnic nationalities. Some of the things we agitated for were not included in the composition of the national conference agenda.

“If he were alive, Beko would say that the outcome of the conference should be submitted to a national referendum and not the National Assembly. He would expect the conference to choose between the presidential and parliamentary systems of government. He would prefer an unbiased chairman for the conference; he would have proffered solutions to all of these.”

Fashola, who was represented by Transportation Commissioner Kayode Opeifa, said the state government would always promote the ideals of the late activist, especially his quest for justice.

He said: “For some of us, we would not have been here today. We recognise the efforts of Dr. Beko to promote justice and fairness. We recognise his effort to actualise the June 12 (1993) struggle. This memorial lecture is one of the ways of immortalising the late icon and the Lagos State government will continue to protect the people against any act of injustice.”

An academic Prof. Kolawole Ogunwowole said Nigeria existed on the false pretext that it was a nation.

The academic noted that this should be thoroughly examined to define the terms of the nation’s existence.

He said: “Nigeria is an amalgam; so, it is not a nation. We have the Yoruba, Ijaw, Fulani, Edo and Ibibio nations, among others. The colonial masters destroyed these nations and hurriedly gave us Nigeria. We need a conference of sovereign ethnic nationalities to reclaim these territories and see the possibilities of having a union.”

Falana said Nigeria was in trouble because the government could no longer render its service to the people.

He said: “The other day, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, told Nigerians that the government was searching for N49.8 billion. A week later, she said it was N12 billion, and some moment later, she said it N20 billion.”

He noted that any of the amounts was sufficient to banish poverty among Nigerians, if it was well managed for the welfare of the people.

Tinubu, Boroffice unveil APC logo in U.S

•‘Power must change hands in 2015’

The train of the All Progressives Congress (APC) crossed the Atlantic Ocean with the unveiling at the weekend of the party’s logo in the United States.

The party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was represented by Mr Idowu Ajanaku, while Senator Ajayi Boroffice, representing Ondo North, was the special guest of honour.

At the event in Maryland, the hall was filled to the brim.

Tinubu said the APC was formed to rescue Nigeria from collapse.

The former governor noted that this seemed imminent with the ineptitude of the ruling People Democratic Party (PDP) in the last 15 years.

The PDP misrule, he said, had taken its toll on Nigeria and Nigerians without sparing any sector.

Tinubu said the formation of APC was human and divine because the people responded well to the clarion call to save the country and embraced the party wholeheartedly.

The former governor noted that the implosion in the PDP was the result of the arrow of confusion God had fired into the ruling party.

He stressed that the “monstrous, gigantic, visionless and directionless octopus cannot be allowed by God to continue to lead the people to utter destruction”.

Tinubu added: “In fact, God has decided to liberate the Nigerians from the hands of this Pharaoh-like organisation, hardened by impunity and corruption, by afflicting them with the loss of the capacity to listen to the voice of reason or repentance.

“But APC is not just a party but a mass movement where people of various ethnic groups, languages, classes and religions are welcome without any form of discrimination. It is the people’s party; it is the voice of God.”

The frontline politician said the formation of APC fulfilled the prediction of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in one of his books, titled: The Hero.

The late Western Nigeria Premier reportedly predicted that the best of conservatives and progressives would one day rule Nigeria.

Tinubu said: “The APC has come to fulfil this prediction and will surely give Nigeria the desired new lease of life.”

The former governor said the APC would provide massive infrastructure, jobs for the youth, restructure the nation, provide stable electricity, among others, all of which the PDP had failed to do.

He urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to join their fellow citizens at home to save the country and expect the APC to form the Federal Government in 2015.

Prof Boroffice, in a 15-page speech, titled: It is Time to Move Nigeria Forward, hailed Tinubu; APC Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; the party’s National Leader, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and former Anambra State governor, Chief Ogboonaya Onu for sinking their differences to form the APC.

The senator noted that the APC chieftains made personal sacrifices to banish poverty, impunity and lawlessness from the country.

He described them as great men with great minds for this great season.

The academic called the PDP a party without vision, adding that as long as the party keeps ruling Nigeria, the nation would not progress.

He faulted the government’s spending in this year’s budget, where N1.2 billion was earmarked for the extension of a VIP clinic at Aso Rock while only N750 million was budgeted for the teaching of hospitals of the Universities of Ibadan, Ilorin and Sokoto!

Prof Boroffice said the money budgeted for the Niger Delta militants was far higher than the budget for the Army, Air Force, Navy and the police put together.

    •Says they are rabble rousers

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday lashed out at those he said had been claiming that the Yoruba are leaderless.

Such critics, according to him, are “hypocrites, mischief makers and rabble rousers who know nothing about Yoruba land and Yoruba people.”

He spoke at the fund-raising for the new ultra modern palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan.

He was the Chief launcher at the ceremony.

Tinubu, who was represented by a former minister, Demola Seriki, declared that the critics’ knowledge of history was shallow, stating that “it will be better for them to take their eyes off our decent home and spend time cleaning out the rot in their own homes.”

The former governor of Lagos State hailed the Olubadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1, for the initiative to build the palace.

He said the Olubadan, though not a politician has always stood against the marauding forces of destruction and confusion, while remaining committed to democratic principles.

He said this is in line with the pedigree of his predecessors from 1820.

He paid similar tributes to past royal fathers of Yoruba land for not disappointing their people.

Asiwaju Tinubu hailed Oyo state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, an indigene of Ibadan, describing him as a pride to the Yoruba and Nigeria as well as an achiever who marches on against all odds.

He said that Oyo State under Ajimobi is at “the cusp and point of monumental change.”

He said the APC has embarked on a historic journey to bring change to the people and give life to their finest aspirations.

•Tinubu, APCON mourn Ekiti radio chief

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, have condemned the murder of the Managing Director of Eminent Communications, Mr. Sesan Ogunro, by gunmen on Sunday evening at Alausa.

The late Ogunro was the Chairman of the Board of the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES).

Fashola visited the late Ogunro’s family at their Ogudu GRA home yesterday.

He was received by the widow, Dupe and the late Ogunro’s children – Mrs. Damilola Gbadebo-Ogunro, Timayo and Fade.

Describing the incident as shocking and unfortunate, Fashola said: “Ogunro was a restless creative spirit and a master of his art. I shudder at the thought that the man whose ingenuity engendered several election campaign materials and compelling state policy advocacy campaigns has bid the world goodbye in such painful circumstances.”

The governor said his administration, Lagos State and Nigeria have lost a resourceful personality, who will be missed by all.

He said: “On behalf of my wife, Emmanuella; the government and people of Lagos State, please accept my condolences and be assured that we are in prayers with you and your family for the repose of the soul of your husband and for the Almighty God to grant you the fortitude to bear this loss.”

In the condolence register, the governor wrote: “My dear friend and brother, this is too sudden a goodbye. You did not wait to finish the job you started with me. You sacrificed so much.

“I know you did not quit on me, because you are not a quitter. Some of the problems we must solve have taken you to a higher place. Rest in peace, dear brother, friend and patriot. I really value the time we spent together.”

Tinubu, in a statement, said: “I received with deep sadness the shocking news of the brutal murder of a close friend, brother and comrade, Sesan Ogunro. Since the sad news broke, I have had cause to reflect on how dangerous and unsafe the county we live in is.

“Ogunro was very committed, humble and progressive-minded. He was humane. He was at the front of the struggle to reclaim the late Chief MKO Abiola’s mandate and for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria.

“Later, he played a central role before and during my tenure as Lagos governor. My heart bleeds for the loss of such a brilliant and talented man.

“There must be a way to stop this hemorrhage and wastage of our best minds. The security of life should be top priority for the government, with stiffer penalties for those who hold and use guns illegally.

“Though dead, Sesan will never be forgotten. He lived an impactful life that touched family, relatives, associates and colleagues. I remember fondly his enthusiasm and arguments that belay his love for Nigeria. I recall how we shared ideas and his willingness to make the sacrifice needed whenever needed.

“I pray that God grants his family the fortitude to bear this huge loss and comfort them in this difficult time.”

The Chairman of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), Lolu Akinwunmi, said he was yet to come to terms with Ogunro’s death.

He said: “I am still in shock over the news. APCON members have been calling one another, but it stills sounds like April fool.

We will miss him. The industry has lost a gem.”

Ogunro was a member of the APCON council led by Akinwunmi.

He said there are no special criteria for joining the group.

Afonja said the group is involved in politics, national service and philanthropy.

He said: “We are into charity and educational support programmes. We donate gifts to orphanages and the destitute. We donate educational materials to schools. We are involved in women support and empowerment programmes, especially for the aged, who have no one to care for them.”

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; his wife, Senator Oluremi and wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, were among persons honoured yesterday for their roles in developing the nation.

The Excellence Award, courtesy of Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area (LCDA), was part of activities marking the council’s 10th anniversary.

Tinubu was honoured for creating the council, among 37 others, in 2003.

Presenting the award to him, the council boss, Hakeem Bamgbola, said the various developmental projects witnessed in the last decade would not have been possible, if not for Tinubu’s foresight and doggedness.

Bamgbola said: “Despite stiff opposition by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, our leader stood firm on the decision that we are all enjoying the benefits of today. We cannot appreciate you more. You are a visionary leader per excellence, whose action has continued to bring about unprecedented development to the teeming Lagos populace.” Lagos State House of Assembly Chief Whip Dr. Rasak Balogun, who received the award on behalf of Tinubu, thanked the council for the honour.

Balogun said Tinubu did not disappoint Lagosians when the crisis over the creation of new councils was hot, but stood by the people’s decision and never wavered.

Senator Tinubu and Mrs. Fashola were honoured for their support to the council.

Balogun, who presented the awards to them, said both women contributed to his success in office.

The event featured the distribution of empowerment materials to the people and cutting of the anniversary cake.
