  • Tinubu and how it all began

Tinubu and how it all began

The Southern Governors’ Forum is building on the foundation laid by their distant predecessors. Twelve years ago, they were bubbling with patriotic passion and drive for development. They were hosted by the former governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Then, critical issues germane to the sustenance of nationhood were on the front burner during the inaugural meeting. The issues are not different from the ones the 17 chief executives are frantically seeking solution in their time. What is striking is not what has changed in Nigeria, but what has remained the same.

True federalism, fiscal federalism and devolution of powers were the ideas espoused by Tinubu, right from his first term in office. The former governor of Lagos has not changed his gear. The fundamental question he raised brought him into collision with the federal might. Then, the hand of the Federal Government was heavy on the Centre of Excellence, leading to the seizure of its allocation for 14 months.

Tinubu’s colleagues who were vociferous in the crusade for the enthronement of a true federal principle included Aremo Olusegun Osoba of Ogun State and Obong Victor Attah of Akwa Ibom, who could be described as the hero of modern resource control struggle. Their ideas, positions and dispositions will reverberate at the brainstorming session.

Tinubu has sustained the debate, although he left office 10 years ago. His message is clear: unity in diversity is possible when there is a sense of belonging. Indisputably, the spirit behind the formation of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its ability to sustain public affection during the 2015 electioneering, had their root in the robust articulation and convincing argument that the restoration of true federalism will foster equity, fairness and justice in the plural society.

Tinubu’s recent exposition on the value of federalism has a wider appeal beyond the ‘Forum 17.’ It is a blueprint that has set the tone for debate on the repositioning of the heterogeneous society through a sort of re-designing, reconfiguration, revitalisation, review and re-invention of its federal essence.

Early in the life of this dispensation, the late eminent politician, Chief Bola Ige, urged Southern leaders to cooperate and survive or sink together.

Tinubu condemns calls for secession, break-up

All Progressives Congress (APC) national stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, yesterday berated the brains behind the recent  quit notice to certain  Nigerians to leave the  north, and warned such people  to desist forthwith.

He said, “Voices calling for violence must be roundly condemned for it is wrong to incite brother to go against brother and neighbour to combat neighbour,” Tinubu said in his Eid-el-Fitri message to Nigerians.

“Voices calling for secession and break-up are wrong and should not be followed,” he declared in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Tunde Rahman.

The spirit of sacrifice, self discipline, goodwill, justice, tolerance, mercy, forgiveness and compassion inherent in the Ramadan Fast, he said, should remain with Muslim faithful to guide their day-to-day interactions and relationships with one another.

He added: “For all Muslim brothers and sisters and indeed for all Nigerians, may this be a happy and peaceful Eid-el-Fitri.

“The holy month of Ramadan is now past but we dare not allow the spirit and the true meaning behind the holy month also pass. We must keep hold of the excellent and wonderful things the holy month of Ramadan signifies.

“Ramadan is more than a month of fasting. We fast to strengthen our relationship and our appreciation of Allah. We fast to make ourselves better servants of both Allah and our fellow man. As such, we must emerge from the fast imbued with the spirit of sacrifice, self discipline, goodwill, justice, tolerance, mercy, forgiveness and compassion.

“As we enter into the celebration that now follows, these attributes must remain with us to guide, as if by compass, our day-to-day interactions and relationships with one another.

“In this spirit also we must face the travails that confront our nation. As people led by the spirit and strength of our diversity, togetherness and charity towards all, we must also proclaim and declare our support for the unity and genuine integration of all Nigerians under one flag, in one indivisible nation.

“Voices calling for violence must be roundly condemned for it is wrong to incite brother to go against brother and neighbour to combat neighbour. Voices calling for secession and break-up are wrong and should not be followed.

“However, in the spirit of understanding, we must listen to the genuine concerns of our fellow Nigerians so that we may make of ourselves a stronger, more unified and prosperous nation built on a foundation of dialogue and collective purpose.

“We must join hands in order to bring progress. We must decide whether our diversity shall be our strength or our weakness. It is for us and no one else to determine. The lessons of the holy month of Ramadan point to the success of unity not the failure of division.

“Let us move in this way that we may make of ourselves a better people and nation in which all people, Muslim and non-Muslim, may live in trust, peace and justice as Allah would have it be.”

  • Tinubu warns military rule advocates: don’t try it

Tinubu warns military rule advocates: don’t try it

Deputy speaker, ex-AIG: no room for anti-democratic action

THOSE secretly pushing for a military solution to Nigeria’s problems yesterday got a piece of advice – forget the idea.

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu warned that any attempt to break the nation’s nascent democracy would be resisted.

Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai had raised the alarm about some politicians meeting military officers for political reasons.

Tinubu, who spoke at a joint parliamentary session organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly as part of activities to mark the State’s Golden Jubilee celebration, said the nation had gone too far to allow a military coup to happen again, adding that such a move would be resisted at all cost.

“Amidst the celebration, I will not fail to sound a caution to us all; the precious thing we have, the  democracy that we are now trying to perfect is not guaranteed to us. We must sweat hard, yet think wisely if we are to keep it,” Tinubu said, adding:

“There will always be some people who want to undermine democracy. These people gain more from the government in the dark. Just a few days ago, we had a warning that some people were trying to entice the military out of the barracks. I say don’t try it. I want to add my voice to that warning. Those who think they can break the democracy so many of us laboured and for which too many people died, sacrificed their lives, they are sure mistaken.

“Nigeria has come too far for such a thing to happen. Those people behind such idea will find no fertile ground to plant their seed in Lagos. We will not buy their sad product; whatever they want to sell is a bad product and we are going to reject it.”

“ We tell them, ‘move away from here because Lagos State will resist it’. Lagos State is saying move away from it, don’t think about it, we are all staying together to grow our democracy,” he said.

To the frontline politician, Lagos at 50 is worth celebrating, considering the state’s achievements in the last 50 years.

But, amid the revelry, said Tinubu, it is important to emphasise the need to create more opportunities for the people.

“We also have realised that we need to do more in order to create more opportunities, better education, improved housing and more jobs for many of our people so that all can witness the full blossom of growth and prosperity,” the former governor said, adding:

“As a state,  we have shown we can do great things to enhance the lives of our people. We have so much more to do we need to do more to create great opportunities, better education and numerous business opportunities in the state.”

Tinubu said achieving this objective requires cooperation between the legislature and the executive, adding that  during his tenure as governor, the interface between his administration and the House was very cordial.

“We succeeded in taking Lagos to an enviable height. We set the agenda for progress and today that progress is being felt because the executive and legislature cooperated. This has continued from Fashola to Ambode. This cooperation does not erode on your oversight responsibility,” he said.

Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode, in his opening remark, said since creation, the state had been a shining example and critical hub of socio-economic and political development.

The harmonious relationship between the three arms of government, which is reflective in the governance model of Lagos State, promoted the interest and welfare of the people, he said.

“Today, we are celebrating the contributions of the Lagos State House of Assembly, particularly the 8th Assembly in the last two years, to the true principles of democratic governance through passage of bills that advance the principle of governance and promotion of social welfare of the people within the ambits of the Law.

“It is on record that military incursion into governance has always made the legislature its first victim by suspending the constitution with all powers against the wishes of our people. Therefore, the legislature can be said to be the most exposed in governance model in the current democratic dispensation, if we have to give its true meaning and relevance in a representative government.”

Ambode added that the first to 8th Assemblies had been the benchmark for assessing legislative business in Nigeria, stressing that the 8th Assembly, in particular, had been highly responsive and innovative in fulfilling its constitutional obligations and meeting the aspirations of the people for the dividends of democracy.

“The superlative performance, in his view, “can be attributed to the quality of leadership that has been produced through a mature and democratic process with the purpose of providing a democratic process that would benefit our people”.

“Over the years, the Legislative arm of government in Lagos State has been a shining beacon of democratic independence and responsiveness. It has never shirked its assigned role or responsibility even in the face of provocation. It has continuously engaged the electorate in the process of making laws through interactive engagements and contributions to the making of Laws,” he said.

Ambode stated that the synergy between the three arms of government, particularly the Executive and the Legislature had become the benchmark of the democratic process in Nigeria. He noted that as the government celebrated the last 50 years of the creation of Lagos State, it had laid the building blocks for the next 50 years.

House Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, in his opening remark, said  it was important to celebrate, considering the various contributions of the parliament towards the state’ssuccess story of the state.

House of Representatives Majority Leader  Femi Gbajabiamila said: It is easy to see an absentee legislator easily win election in the country today because the constituents are more concerned with the largesse from such a politician rather than one with a robust idea that will shape the future of the society.”

  • Let the music play on, Tinubu tells Obey at 75

Let the music play on, Tinubu tells Obey at 75

All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has described Chief Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi, nicknamed Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey, as an astute entertainer whose songs would remain evergreen.

Tinubu, in a statement in Lagos to congratulate Obey on his 75th birthday on Monday,  wished him many more years on earth, urging him to “let the music play on”.

”I congratulate Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey on his 75th birthday. It’s a great accomplishment to so be blessed by God as he has been.

”Ebenezer Obey, whose professional career began in the mid-1950s when he moved to Lagos, has contributed a lot to the development of music in Nigeria and  Africa.

”As a musician with a deep Christian spiritual bend, Obey’s music is unique in the way and manner he turns Yoruba axioms bearing rich religious messages into dance-hall compositions.

“His popular tracks like ‘What God Has Joined Together’, ‘Aimasiko’, ‘Eyin Pegan Pegan’, ‘Anjade Loni Eledumare’,  ‘Jesu Olore’, ‘Africa is My Home’, ‘Ambe o’, ‘I am a Winner’, etc, remain masterpieces any day.

“When in early 1990s, he retired into Nigerian gospel music ministry, I knew it could only be short-lived, because when you have a passion for a profession, like Chief Obey’s zeal for music, whether secular or gospel, there is no room for retirement.

”I saw him in action in December last year at an event held at the Lagos State House, Alausa, Ikeja, tagged ‘Evening with Governor Ambode’ to end 2016 and usher in 2017; he was the cynosure of all eyes.

” He remained his true self, the true entertainer that we have always known, churning out one rich number after another.

“At 75, I wish and pray that God grants Obey more years and the strength and energy to continue with his music. So to Chief Commander, I say let the music play on, ” Tinubu said.
