Buhari receives three young admirers in Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday received three young admirers in the State House, who have shown high interest in his administration, and prayed for his recovery during ill-health.

They included three-year old Maya Jammal, who became an internet sensation when her videoed prayer for the President’s recovery went viral, and 10 year-old Aisha Aliyu Gebbi, who penned a personal letter to President Buhari describing herself as his “biggest fan’’.

The third person is Nicole Benson, 12 years old, who contributed N5,785 to the President’s campaign in 2015, which was all saved up from her lunch and pocket allowance.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, the President said: “I am very impressed by what the children have been able to do,’’

“I can see Maya is shy. I watched her video where she was praying for my recovery when I was ill.’’ he added

The President attributed his victory at the polls to the contributions of good hearted Nigerians, like young Nicole, who is from Lagos State, and showed her support by sending her personal savings.

“Nicole, I congratulate you, and myself for being here today. Your contribution made a great impact. As you can see, I am here in the Presidential Villa. Thank you,’’ he said.

President Buhari told Aisha that her letter was heart-warming, noting that he felt re-assured knowing he had fans amongst the children.

“Thank you very much for the letter,’’ he said.

The President said he looked forward to more visits from the children.

“I am hoping that it will not be the first and last time we will be meeting while I am here. We will continue to meet even after I have left here.’’ he said

Speaking on behalf of the parents, Hon. Aliyu Ibrahim Gebbi, said the President’s gesture of inviting the children to the Presidential Villa was a dream come true.

Gebbi said the invitation also added to the President’s long standing record of good heartedness and fairness.

“In a nation with few legends and accuracy of truth, we look up to you, Mr. President, and our children are looking up to you,’’ he added.

Maya lives in the FCT, while Aisha came in from Bauchi State.

    •Fed Govt backs Bama initiative

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday met behind closed doors with Service chiefs and Borno State Governor Kashim Ibrahim.

The meeting, which held at the Presidential Villa in  Abuja, started few minutes to 6p.m at the Vice President’s conference room.

At the meeting were the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, Chief of Defence Staff, Gabriel Abayomi Olonishakin, Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai and Chief of Air Staff Sadique Abubakar.

Others are: Chief of Staff to the President Abba Kyari, National Security Adviser(NSA) Babagana Monguno and  Interior Minister Abdulraman Dambazzau.

Governor Shettima told reporters at the end of the meeting that the parley was an exploratory one to cross pollinate ideas on the rebuilding of the northeast.

He said the Federal Government has magnanimously decided to support the state in the Bama initiative, which is a pilot scheme.

The governor hoped that the scheme will be replicated in all parts of the devastated Northeast.

He said: “It’s an exploratory discussion and once it comes on stream you will be informed. It’s about restoring the dignity of our people about rebuilding lives, infrastructure, schools, clinic its about giving hope to the hopeless.”

On how much is being committed to the project, he said: “I do not have the mandate to state, its still in the exploratory case, its not for me to pass judgment on how much is going to be committed but its partnership that will certainly work.

“The Federal Government, he said, is committed to assisting the zone to rehabilitate educational infrastructures, health infrastructures so that the people can get back on their feet once and for all.”

On constant bombings in the area, he said: “Well, its not constant per say, if you juxtapose the sorry state of affairs two years ago with the current state of affairs, there is cause for celebration to me personally even these suicide bombings is a sign of weakness on the part of Boko Haram.

“Two years ago, they were holding unto 22 out of 27 local government areas, they have been sufficiently decimated. I am not under rating their capacity from the state but these are lunatics who basks on the opportunity of publicity to kill and maim so that they can get greater regard in the global Jihadist community.

“Definitely, we are also coming up with robust response towards addressing this issue of suicide bombing. We have challenges no doubt about it. I am not actually discounting that fact but when you put it in proper contest you will see that a lot has been done, they have been sufficiently decimated so that they can no longer hold on to any territory in the Nigerian federation.”

Osinbajo to hold interactive session on new executive orders

The Presidency has promised to vigorously implement the new executive orders in its determination to significantly transform the business environment in the country.

The spokesman to the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Mr. Laolu Akande, made this known in a statement he issued on Sunday to give update on the new orders signed last Thursday.

He said as part of measures to drive the reforms intended in the executive orders, Osinbajo would hold an interactive forum in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said that Osinbajo would be discussing in particular, the executive orders on business environment and promoting “Made-in-Nigeria” products with a cross-section of middle level and senior public and civil servants.

“These are the people who will be directly responsible for the attainment of the objectives of the executive orders.

“So the acting president wants an opportunity to talk with them directly and hear from them in person.”

Akande noted that the interactive forum would be open for live coverage and live streaming.

According to him, ensuring the effective implementation of the orders is critical for the overall prosperity of Nigerians and Nigeria.

He said that as part of activities commemorating the second year of the Muhammadu Buhari administration, a presidential level report card event on the Social Investment Programmes (SIPs) of the Buhari presidency would be held at Aso Rock on May 29.

“At this national event, we shall be updating Nigerians on the progress so far attained, how we are addressing some challenges and how Buhari’s Social Investment Programmes would be significantly expanded going forward,” Akande said.

The SIPs are the N-Power, which engaged 200,000 unemployed Nigerians graduates for a volunteer job programme and the Conditional Cash Transfer being implemented now in nine states.

Others are the General Economic and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), a micro credit scheme that has given out almost 60,000 loans already, and the National Homegrown School Feeding Programme.

In the feeding programme, 25 million meals have been served and over one million primary school pupils in at least seven states are being fed using over 11,000 caterers.

On the progress of the report of the Presidential Investigative Panel, Akande urged for patience.

He explained that at the appropriate time the outcome of the panel would be made public “and Nigerians will be satisfied”.

He said the two suspended officials remained suspended.

  • Osinbajo to continue to work while I rest, says Buhari

Osinbajo to continue to work while I rest, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari who arrived the country Friday has said the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will continue to work while he takes his rest.

Buhari who disclosed this at his first meeting with  Osinbajo and other ministers in Aso Rock said he deliberately came back towards the weekend.

    Below is Buhari’s speech.

“I am pleased that I am back, I am pleased that the Vice President enjoyed this break and he has to do much more this time around. Youth and intellect is squarely behind him, age and purely military experience is behind me. Continue to do the work, Nigeria will continue whether we are here or not and my single most important advise is take education of everybody under your responsibility very seriously, your children our relatives, our constituencies, education education education. We must do more on education.”

He added; “I am deeply grateful to all Nigerians Muslims and Christians alike who have prayed and continue to pray for my good health. This is a testimony that inspite of the hardship being experienced Nigerians support the government in its efforts to tackle our country’s challenges.

“The best way me to pay you all is to rededicate myself to serving you, protecting your interest and keeping your trust. I thank you very much. I feel much better now.

“All I will need is to do further follow ups within some weeks.

“Rather than sending delegations to Abuja to welcome me, May I appeal to our people to continue to pray for the country’s unity, progress and prosperity. I thank you very much and may God bless our country.

“There is a remarkable difference between what happened now and what happened last year.

“When it was getting to Christmas I told the Vice President, I know he has got a church therefore he has to go home. I said ok let us do it turn by
turn, you go for Christmas and the New Year and when you come back I will go.

“He said yes. I suspected he didn’t go home, when he came back, I said ok it will be my turn in some months time. This time around I said we better do the same, I
didn’t know he had the same principles, but for me I feel that I was a little more tired than I probably was in last eighteen months. Whatever the
case , I am very grateful that Nigerians are appreciative of what all of us are doing as a group. I am very pleased with them.

“I am cost conscious and I think the VP knows about the expenditure. So please if you were clever enough reroute your way, say on your official
duties either from US back to Nigeria.

“If was a battle please don’t be too upset. I am very conscious of the economy. I have rested as much as humanly possible, I have received I think the best of treatment I could receive.”
