    ‘Herdsmen’ kill ASP in Oyo

    Suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed the Officer-in-charge of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in Saki, Oyo State.

    The officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), whose name was not disclosed by the Command, was said to have been macheted to death by the suspected Fulani herdsmen during an operation in a forest around Saki-Ogboro Road in Oke Ogun.

    The incident is coming barely two weeks after the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, and other top officers held a stakeholders meeting to address crises between farmers and herdsmen.

    The meeting, held at the Eleyele Headquarters of the Command in Ibadan.

    According to a source, who pleaded anonymity, a combined team of police officers and SARS operatives arrested some suspected Fulani herdsmen on the ground of disturbing public peace a day earlier, but the men were ambushed by another gang of herdsmen during another attempt to arrest two other suspects.

    The development has led to fear in Saki and its environs.

    Police spokesman Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the incident said four suspects had been arrested in connection with the death of the officer.

    The Plateau Police Command on Friday said three persons were killed by gunmen in Jebbu-Miango community in Bassa Local Government area of the state.

    The command’s Spokesman, ASP Terna Tyopev, told newsmen in Jos that the incident, which occurred on Thursday night, also left eight persons injured and 20 houses completely razed.

    “Yesterday at about 1900hrs, the Police Division in Bassa Local Government area received a distress call that Jebbu-Miango community in Bassa was under attack.

    “The division immediately informed the state police command and mobilised its men to the place. While we were close to the village, the armed men ran away.

    “Some witnesses confirmed to the police team that three people from the community were killed by the gunmen.

    “They identified the deceased as: Danlami Gomaster (male) of Kwall District, Emmanuel Audu (male) of Jebbu-Miango and a yet-to-be-identified person.

    “Eight other persons sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries while 20 houses were also set ablaze,” Tyopev said.

    The spokesman said the injured were at present receiving treatment at a hospital in the locality.

    He said that investigation was ongoing to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the attack.

    He appealed to the people of the locality to cooperate with the security agencies to that they could fish out the perpetrators of the heinous act.

    An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and members of his team are now in trouble in Lagos for alleged illegal duty.

    The policemen are facing interrogation following their alleged invasion of a hotel at Olodi Apapa, Lagos, and the arrest of one of the hotel’s security men who they locked up in the boot of their operational vehicle and took him to their station.

    The proprietor of the hotel, Mr Obimdi Ocho had, in a November 21, 2017 petitioned to the police authorities, claimed that the suspects ostensibly from the Zonal Intervention Unit, Ikorodu, stormed his property in a commando style, harassing his staff.

    He said the police team accused his security men of being in possession of arms illegally.

    Ocho said the gun in question was licensed and procured following incessant attacks on his premises by cultists.

    The hotel’s security man who was taken away by the police, Cyril Nwachukwu, alleged that his captors took his photographs with the gun in his hand and threatened to get the photos published unless he paid them N400,000.

    A member of the police team was also sent to collect another N60,000 after Nwachukwu’s release.

    Contacted for comment the zonal police public relations officer Dolapo Badmos said: “Yes, I can confirm that as a result of this petition the case is under investigation at Alagbon.”

    Police suspend ASP as 16 get sanctions for extortion

    •’Officers extorted N834,000 in three mont

    AN Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Lagos Police Command, Bayo Obadiah, has been suspended for engaging in extortion and professional misconducts.

    Sixteen other policemen were also sanctioned, according to the third quarter report of the Police Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) released yesterday.

    The report also indicated that N834,000 extorted from members of the public within the period under review was recovered and returned to the owners.

    Seven hundred and sixty-four complaints were recorded between July and September, with Lagos, Rivers and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) topping the list.

    Lagos State Command, the report said, ranked highest with 180 complaints (23.56 per cent), followed by Rivers with 102 (13.35 per cent) and FCT generated 87 (11.39 per cent).

    Head of PCRRU Abayomi Shogunle, a Chief Superintendent of Police, said the Police Service Commission (PSC) approved the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris’ recommendation that Obadiah be suspended for corruption.

    He said: “Part of the money recovered include ?100,000 previously extorted from a woman in Kano State, who got her money after she contacted the PCRRU.

    “Sokoto and Plateau State Commands recorded no complaint in the period under review. In all, phone call was the most preferred channel by the public for lodging complaints with 447 (58.5 per cent), WhatsApp 203 (26.57 per cent Twitter 19 (2.49 per cent), Facebook 6 (0.71 per cent), SMS 3 (0.39 per cent), BBM 1 (0.13 per cent) and others (written petitions, media publications etc.) 29 (3.80 per cent).

    Aside addressing issues of misconduct, Shogunle said the police in Ondo were able to arrest suspected terrorists following the PCRRU face-to-face confidence building with citizens in Akoko.

    He said: “Massive sensitisation campaigns were carried out in selected states. Helicopter airdrops were carried out in Kano and Kaduna states. Face-to-face disseminations were carried out in Borno and Ondo states by PCRRU agents.

    He said his unit was able to achieve the above through “collaboration and support received from our partners”.

    “Efforts are ongoing to upgrade the PCRRU Call Centre so as to improve the efficiency of the unit,” Shogunle said.

  • Gunmen kill six in Kaduna village attack

    After an attack that saw 11 persons dead and two villages burnt down in Godogodo Chiefdom, Jema’a Local Government Area, LGA, in Southern part of Kaduna State, about two weeks ago, the same alleged gunmen on Saturday, again killed six farmers in Godogodo, village sources told our reporter.

    The villagers, who spoke with our reporter, claimed that the gunmen said that their villages have become cattle grazing reserves and wanted them to vacate immediately.

    Kaduna State Police Spokesman, ASP, Aliyu Usman, confirmed the murder of the six and revealed that arrests have been made, and that there was tension in the area, but that the police are fully in control of the situation.

    According to a journalist who was an early caller to the village, “elder from Godogodo and family of the deceased gave the names of the victims as:

    “Monday Hamza,  24,  married with 3 children;  Toma Masara 35, married and  3 children and  Chaka (Waje) Rubutu 26 years, married, 4 children.

    “They said that the body of Chaka was still missing.

    “The rest are: Linus (Golkofa) 20, married with two children; Julius (Golkofa) 19, married with a child ; Boboo Okocha 18years , single and Sambo (Golkofa) 17, single.”

    Another elder said: “Godogodo is full to the brim with refuges who have fled their villages seeking for safety here because it is bigger village, close by an expressway and has better security. I can assure you that there is no day that someone is not killed by Fulani men around here.

    “After that, the attack, they would cut down all the crops or herd in their cattle to eat the growing crops. There will be hunger this year in these villages.

    “What they are saying is our villages are now cattle grazing reserves and they want everybody out.

    “Last Saturday, these youngmen that were killed went out as a group to their farms with a few others. We were told that armed Fulani men had attacked them on their farms, and a few escaped, some with bullet wounds. A search party on Sunday found them ridden with bullets and machetes’ cuts and they were all dead.

    “The Police have taken their corpse to Kafanchan mortuary,” he said.

    Kaduna State Police Spokesmen, ASP Aliyu Usman, explained that, “Yes it is true that some people were killed in Godogodo on Saturday. There was tension in the place, but now we have deployed our men to all affected areas and we are on top of the situation. We have made some arrests and the suspects are being investigated at our Kafanchan Division.

    “We want to advise residents of these areas to be cautions of where they go to. They should also report all suspicious movement to the police,” he said.

    Pirates kill ASP, three others in Rivers

    Sea pirates yesterday killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and three other marine policemen on patrol in Rivers State.

    The incident happened near the Abonnema Jetty in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

    It was learnt that 24 sea pirates in four speed boats ambushed the policemen at 3p.m.

    The hoodlums were said to have suddenly opened fire, killing the policemen.

    The residents scampered for safety to avoid being hit by stray bullets.

    One of the five occupants of the police patrol boat, who survived the attack, was said to have jumped into the deep river and swam to safety.

    Police spokesman, Muhammad Kidaya Ahmad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident.

    He said details of the killings were still sketchy at press time last night.

     

     

     

  • Robbers kill police officer in Ondo

    ARMED robbers yesterday reportedly killed a senior police officer identified as Iheme Wilfred, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), at Ijare town in Ifedore Local Government area of Ondo State.

    A source said the deceased who was the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) in Ijare Police Division and other officers were on official duty when the bandits carried out the dastardly act.

    The robbers, it was gathered, who allegedly carried out an operation at Ikere Ekiti on Thursday evening were trying to escape through Ondo State and on sighting the security men on the Ijare-Ikere road, opened fire on the leader of the team.

    Other members of the police patrol team reportedly fled into the bush, with the robbers allegedly carting away their arms and ammunition.

    The robbers were said to have earlier attacked a commercial bank in Ikere Ekiti on that fateful day and carted away unspecified amount of money.

    Police sources said the deceased got information that the robbers who operated in Ekiti State were heading towards Ijare in Ondo State, which is a border town of the two states.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, said men of the State Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have commenced a search for the bandits and expressed confidence that very soon, the robbers would be apprehended.

    Ogodo said the remains of the shot police officer had since been deposited in a mortuary at the State Hospital, Akure.

    An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and an Inspector fell yesterday under robbers’ bullets in new Oko-Oba, Agege, a Lagos suburb. The Police Command claimed last night that two robbers were also killed.

    The officers reportedly displayed rare bravery as they engaged the robbers despite their superior firepower.

    It was gathered that four policemen were on patrol around 2am when they sighted; a Hilux pick-up and two Toyota Sienna buses which they mistook for their Area Commander’s.

    Police sources said they parked as a mark of honour for their presumed boss, only to be at from the vehicles.

    The ASP and the Inspector, who were said to have taken cover behind the patrol van, returned fire.

    Source said the robbers hit the ASP in the leg and he fell down and the robbers riddled his body with bullets.

    The Inspector was also gunned down; the others, a Sergeant and a Corporal, escaped.

    The Nation learnt that a reinforcement arrived at the scene after the robbers had fled.

    Another version of the incident said the patrol team was on its way to respond to a distress call when the bandits, who were in three vehicles, opened fire on them at Paying Junction near Olaniyi street.

    Police spokesperson Ngozi Braide confirmed the death of the police officers, adding that two of the robbers were also killed. The command has arrested 130 suspected members of a robbery syndicate known as “One Million Boys.”

    A few weeks ago, residents of Ajegunle sent a distress call to the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, on the gang, which they claimed has been terrorising the suburb.

    The suspects were brought into the Command Headquarters in a Black Maria and two commercial vehicles.

    Weapons recovered from them included five live ammunition, two double barrel guns, and 10 machetes.

    Parading the suspects, Manko said their arrest was the fulfillment of his promise to get them.

    Their arrest, he said, followed a raid of night clubs, a hotel, and Boundary in Ajegunle. He said a bag of weed suspected to be Indian hemp, one pistol, and a gun accessory were recovered. Manko assured the residents that the police would not relent until all the hoodlums are flushed out.

    Some of the suspects claimed the “real armed robbers” ran away during the raid, denying that they are not members of the notorious gang.

    A suspect, Onyekachi Amaechi, said the gun recovered from his compound belongs to a gang member he identified as Sanni. He said Sanni kept the gun there while on the run. According to him, residents that do not have “reasonable amount” risk torture, maiming, and raping by the gang.

    Emmanuel Monday, 17, and Jude Ifegun 18, both residents of Ladiga Street, denied being members of the gang. They claimed they were arrested because they kept late night.
