  • Former Miss Nigeria urges aspirants to focus on missions, visions

THE Immediate past Miss Nigeria, Chioma Obiadi has urged future beauty queens to focus more on their missions and visions rather than on the material gains attached to being a queen.

Obiadi, the 40th Miss Nigeria, 2016 to 2017,  made the call ahead of the Miss Nigeria contest, which holds today in Lagos.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), 18 lucky finalists, out of 40 semi finalists, who were selected from over 1,000 applicants, would participate at the 2018 Miss Nigeria contest in Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

Obiadi who retained her pet project on “Green girl”, told NAN in Lagos yesterday that one of the benefits of becoming Miss Nigeria was that it exposes the winners to new opportunities.

The former beauty queen, whose project cantered on projecting decency of environment and dignity of female gender, noted that being part of the contest was a unique opportunity.

  • Aspirants table petitions at APC secretariat

Aggrieved aspirants who lost out in primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday besieged the national secretariat of to submit their petitions against the elections.

Some aspirants from Niger State told reporters that the party leadership was planning to give their victory to serving senators, but said they would resist such moves.

They accused the National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, of wickedness, saying the plan to upturn their victory would be resisted.

The aspirants – Mohammed Bima, Mohammed Sani Musa and Zakari Jikantoro – said after winning their senatorial primaries, the party leadership was planning to offer automatic tickets to the incumbent senators who they described as “working for the Senate President Bukola Saraki”.

Bima said: “I don’t think even the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will do what our party is trying to do. What the national leadership is trying to do is wicked; it is more than short-changing us. It is wicked but our next line of action would be in accordance with the laws.

“Our leaders should discountenance whatever is corrupt and tag along with our President in his anti-corruption fight. Nothing should be done to take the party backwards because our founding fathers have done a lot to reposition it. Anything done to return these three senators will kick the APC out of Niger State. We call on Mr President to intervene because we don’t want our party kicked out of the state.”

Mohammed Sani Musa said they will do everything to protect their mandate. “We won’t give up our mandate. No official communication has been sent to us to the effect that our election was upturned; reasons for the change of committee we don’t know. Offering automatic tickets to lawmakers was not official. If it was, why did the NWC sell forms to the same senators?”

Adaze Wilson Imafidon, who contested the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency seat of Edo State, insists that no primary held in the area.

In a petition to the Appeals Committee, Imafidon said despite the short notice of the rescheduled primaries, he fully mobilised his supporters in the wards and voting centres within the said Federal Constituency.

He said: “Unfortunately, none of the accredited members of the appropriate committee mandated by the party to supervise and conduct the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde election was present, except in Urhonigbe South where only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) workers came to observe proceedings of an election that did not hold.

“It is beyond contention that the proposed primary election into the Federal House of Representatives in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency, which was slated for October 6, and indeed in the whole of Edo State, did not hold.”

  • Stakeholders, aspirants reject Kogi PDP primary

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State, including a former Chairman of Kabba Local Government Area Nathaniel Taiwo, have rejected last Wednesday’s primary in Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency.

Three aspirants – Salman Idris, Sunday Adeleye and Okesuji Obatoyinbo – also joined Taiwo to reject the primary. They called for “the immediate conduct of a transparent primary.

The aggrieved persons called for the reconstitution of a new election committee, composed of persons of impeccable character.

They said: “In view of the confusion foisted on aspirants and party loyalists in Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency, it has become pertinent to lay bare the facts, avail our party leadership and constituents an update and point out the consequences of not conducting the primary election.

“Nine aspirants were screened, cleared and eligible to participate in the primary election. Aspirants and delegates converged at Prestige Hotel, Kabba and waited 16 hours, from 8am to 12 midnight, but did not see party officials assigned to conduct the exercise, and no justifiable reason was communicated for their absence.

“Delegates and aspirants dispersed after information was received that the election has been shifted to October 4, by 7am, for security reasons.

“About 1.30am, news filtered in that party officials, led by the Publicity Secretary, Bode Ogunmola, were at the venue accrediting delegates.

“Only seven of the 337 delegates were on ground then and as other aspirants arrived, they were able to contact.”

This attempted electoral heist was rebuffed with protests, and when T.J Yusuf realised the ploy would not fly, his thugs started shooting sporadically to stop the election, forcing officials to scamper to safety.

“This was reported at the Kabba Divisional Police headquarters, where it was confirmed that the police and other security agencies were not invited to secure the election.

“Mr. Yusuf, after the mayhem and aborted election, caused to be published that he won the primary but the blogger retracted the story when he realised he was misled.

“Mr. Ogunmola, who is also the returning officer, confirmed that the election did not hold. What played out was a sinister plot to conduct a kangaroo primary in the absence of other aspirants. The summation of this action is a deliberate attempt to foist Yusuf on us.

The aggrieved aspirants however demanded that urgent actions be taken against the perpetrators.

  • Aspirants seek annulment of Smart Adeyemi’s election

Three of Kogi West senatorial aspirants have asked the National Working Committee (NWC)to declare outcome of the primary which produced Senator Smart Adeyemi as null and void.

They alleged the primary was not conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and guidelines.

They alleged the entire process was manipulated by agents of the state government whose continued stay in office was tied to the outcome of the exercise.

In a joint petition, Dr. Williams Akanle, a retired Director of the Department of State Services; Chief (Mrs.)Doyin Ibikunle and Alhaji TajudeenBismillah appealed to the party to follow the path of honour.

They asked the national secretariat to order a fresh primary and disband the panel that conducted the exercise.

  • Don’t declare any candidate in Ondo, aspirants tell panel

Aspirants in Ondo North and Central with their supporters yesterday staged a protest in Akure, Ondo State capital over alleged plan to manipulate the exercise.

The aggrieved Houses of Representatives and Assembly aspirants, numbering 14, accused the leadership of the party in the state of non-conduct of primary elections in all constituencies in Ondo Central and North Senatorial Districts.

Among the protesters were: Aribo Olayato, Omosule Eniolorunda, Dr Olajide Owoka, Fadairo Dennis, Kenneth Olawale, Tayo Oluwatuyi and Mayokun Lawson-Alade.

Others were: Bisi Adanri, Ibitoye Oluwole, Banji Akinkeye, Olasunkanmi Ojo, Oluwarotimi Abitogun, Kabiru Hassan and Bosun Ogunleye.

Olayato, an aspirant for Owo/Ose federal constituency, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, alleged they assigned their agents to all wards without any election taking place.

He said no INEC officials were on ground as observers, stressing it was later learnt some government functionaries directed voters should be dispersed because the governor had concluded arrangement for the exercise in all the constituencies.

The aspirant alleged that the election officers and INEC have been compromised by the state government.

He said: “Any attempt by the state leadership of the APC to declare certain aspirants as candidates in all the constituencies without primary election would amount to flagrant rape of democracy, which could cause disaffection within the ruling party”.

  • Aspirants opposed to Port Harcourt venue are against Rivers, Niger Delta, says Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday slammed some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirants for alleged opposition to Port Harcourt as venue for the party’s National Convention October 5 and 6.

He said such aspirants, by their action, showed “they are against the economic interest of the state and Niger Delta.”

Besides, he said such aspirants have failed to live up to their campaign for the restructuring of the country.

PDP is billed to hold a convention to elect its presidential candidate on October 5 and 6 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. Thirteen aspirants are jostling for the ticket.

The Port Harcourt venue, endorsed by some aspirants, has not gone down well with other aspirants.

Describing the opposition to Port Harcourt as strange, Wike said there was no other way to explain such cold feeling towards holding the convention in Port Harcourt apart from the fact that the aspirants involved had no economic interest of Rivers and Niger Delta at heart.

He said: “Those who are against the PDP convention holding in Port Harcourt don’t have the the economic interest of Rivers and Niger Delta at heart.

“If you are telling the people of the state and by extension Niger Delta that you don’t want such event to hold in their domain as an aspirant, how will you act when you become a president? How do you expect the people you are telling that you don’t like their state to vote for you during the election?”

The governor described as worrisome that the same people who have been traversing the length and breadth of the country calling for the restructuring of Nigeria were kicking against the choice of Port Harcourt as venue for the convention.

He asked: “Why are they not acting in tandem with their campaign for the restructuring of Nigeria? From their opposition to Port Harcourt, it means the restructuring campaign is a mere lip service”.

All the aspirants, he said, will enjoy a level playing field, insisting that the choice of Port Harcourt is not meant to give any aspirant an edge over others.

The governor said: “Every aspirant will be given a level playing field.

Holding the convention in Port Harcourt does not mean anybody will have undue advantage. What it will do for the state is that it will boost its local economy because groundnut, sellers of water in satchets and food vendors will have more sales. Hoteliers will also record increased business.

“That is the only thing Rivers State stands to gain from holding the convention in Port Harcourt. And anybody who is against Port Harcourt hosting the event does not like the state. He is against the economic interest of the state”.

According to Wike, the person who will emerge the candidate of the party will emerge on the basis of his political clout and not on any other consideration.

He said that what PDP members need at the moment “is not to bicker over the choice of convention venue but to work in unity to achieve the goal of the party which he said is to wrest power from the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We need to work together, we don’t need any division at this moment. Our goal must be to win in 2019.”

  • Yobe: Aspirants query stakeholders’ option

APART from the indirect primary option adopted by the Yobe State Chapter of the APC, which does not auger well with some stakeholders of the party in the state, the critical stakeholders meeting also adopted a motion moved by Hon. Yau Galadima, a member House of Representatives, mandating Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam to single handedly anoint a candidate that will succeed him as governor.

That decision has obviously drawn a battle line between other aspirants vying for the governorship position with the awaiting successor that will be anointed by Gaidam.

Sen. Bukar Bukar Abba described the outcome of the meeting as illegal as he was more disposed to the direct primary elections option, boasting that he will slug it out with the governor at the primary election.

Those that have publicly shown interest in the governorship seat and have even purchased their forms  include; Hon. Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, current member House Representative,  Dr. Aji Kolo, a retired Permanent Secretary in the state and Alh.  Ibrahim Bomoi, popularly called Bala Bursar, a retired treasurer with the FCDA. The trio have also viewed the decision at the meeting as a step towards preventing them from engaging in fair contest.

If the meeting decides on indirect primaries and consensus, why will they still say the governor should chose a candidate for the party? This is undemocratic,” one of the aspirants said.

  • Aspirants give Ibadan new poster look

Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, is wearing a new look, no thanks to governorship aspirants whose posters and billboards now adorn the nooks and cranny of the city. The new look tells the story of a hot contest among aspirants who would stop at nothing to gain higher visibility over one another across major political parties, writes Southwest Bureau Chief BISI OLADELE

New visitors to Ibadan and other major towns in Oyo State may praise the cities for their new beautiful looks. Glittering billboards and posters beam cute faces of governorship and other aspirants in all corners. They are the expression of a strong desire by many indigenes to succeed Governor Abiola Ajimobi in next year’s general elections.

In Ibadan, the state capital, from Adegbayi to Sango, from Ojoo to Dugbe, from Basorun to Apata, the city is adorned with these political posters showing beautiful faces, party logos and catchy phrases which were aimed at persuading readers and the entire voters to support their aspiration.

Most of them are really well crafted and beautifully designed. These qualities make choice taxing for many undiscerning voters.

One thing residents cannot take away from these posters, however, is the improved level of print design and advertising concepts. It confirms that the level of improvement in taste in the last four to eight years is tremendous.

Within the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), over 15 aspirants have their billboards and posters in strategic places in all the towns and communities across the state. They include Adebayo Adelabu, Niyi Akintola (SAN), Joseph Tegbe, Olalekan Alli, Ajiboye Omodewu, Azeez Adeduntan, Owolabi Babalola, Kehinde Olaosebikan, Sunday Dare, Wole Adejumo, Adebayo Alao-Akala, Soji Akanbi, Fatai Buhari and Soji Eniade.

While some posters and billboards have the photograph of Governor Abiola Ajimobi inserted, others don’t have. It is believed that the insertion of Ajimobi’s photograph is to further convey endorsement of the new godfather in Oyo politics.

In the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Seyi Makinde is the only visible aspirant whose billboards and posters beam his cool mien all over the cities and communities.

In the newly boosted African Democratic Congress (ADC), Olufemi Lanlehin, Yunus Akintunde and Aderemi Olaniyan are visible in large posters and billboards across cities and local communities.

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) has Oyedele Hakeem flaunting the party’s logo all around Ibadan while Olaiya Abideen Olaitan looks most visible in Accord Party.

Aside roundabouts, major junctions, markets and other strategically visible places, the politicians seized the opportunity of the Eid-el-Kabir ceremony to outshine one another.

At the praying ground in Agodi where the governor observed his prayers with other top government functionaries, Islamic clerics and other dignitaries, posters covered the length and breadth of the entire fence. Posters of different colours and shades of aspirants became the major attraction for both Muslims who went to pray and passers-by. Their supporters also displayed banners as they move from one location to another to gain visibility among Muslim faithful.

While some have thematic campaigns, some do not.

For instance, Yunus Akintunde’s theme is ‘U & Us.” Babalola Owolabi’s campaign theme is “Osusu Owo.” Olaosebikan’s is “Ojo Ola Oyo” while Soji Akanbi’s theme is “Agbajo Owo.” Hakeem Alao Oyedele has ”Allow Alao” as his campaign theme while Omodewu has “Representation of Developmental Legacy” as his theme. Eniade’s is themed “Iwaju, iwaju” while Adelabu themed his campaign “The Penkelemeesi Legacy.”

As some of the posters wear out or get torn by the harsh weather, they are replaced within days to retain their effects on the minds of readers, confirming the seriousness of the politicians.

It is thought that the aspirants are pouring their resources to the idea because its terminal date is near. All political parties are expected to conduct their primaries by October. Thereafter, only those who pick their party’s ticket will continue with the media campaign.

But for now, the poster and billboard regime is booming in Oyo State with printers, advertising agencies and poster pasters smiling to the bank. Radio and television stations are also reaping from the boom as the candidates seize the opportunity of major programmes and popular events to pay tributes, condolences or felicitate with notable people or the masses at popular festivals.

As the boom continues, residents watch with glee how politicians play their game of wits in their efforts to gain power.

A resident, Mrs Grace Oriade, told Southwest Report that the number of aspirants shown in posters is a source of confusion. She is worried that having too many aspirants for only one position makes it difficult for the ordinary citizen to identify who is actually the best for the job. She called for early primaries to separate the chaff from the wheat so that voters can easily choose the best from among the pack.

The Director-General, Oyo State Signage and Advertisement Agency (OYSAA), Pastor Yinka Adepoju, however, views the development from both positive and negative perspectives. For him, filling of vacant billboards with colourful materials is a welcome development. But pasting posters and banners recklessly is a negative impact on the work of his agency.

Adepoju, who also doubles as the Special Adviser to Governor Ajimobi on Signage and Advertisement told Southwest Report that “just like you have observed, OYSAA has equally observed the influx of campaign materials such as billboards, banners and posters on our highways, roundabouts, bridges, fence walls, public buildings and other structures around the cities by political aspirants.

“For us, it came in form of mixed feelings. One, it’s a thing of joy in that the majority of billboards which hitherto had been vacant for several months are now engaged with colourful campaign posters  and different slogans together with pictures of aspirants. But on the other hand, one feels terribly bad when you look at the damage done to the environment by the same set of people, especially as it concerns the irresponsible way and manner campaign posters are pasted around the cities. This unruly behaviour, no doubt, has contributed negatively to our beautification programme for the fact that the untoward attitude is capable of destroying the already sanitised environment.

“As a matter of emphasis, OYSAA was created by the provision of an enabling law that states clearly that any person or group of persons , individual or corporate organisations, political aspirants and other stakeholders should, as a matter of policy, seek for and obtain due approval of Oyo State Signage and Advertisement Agency before putting up any billboard, banner or posters failing which such advertisement structures or materials shall be removed from locations without recourse to owners while such defaulters may also be prosecuted.”

While cautioning against the habit of debasing the already sanitised environment with illegal posters and billboards, Adepoju said discipline must be maintained even in the face of politicking.

He condemned what he described as “lawless act whereby politicians, in an attempt to promote or  publicise  themselves and their parties, will jettison the laid down rules and regulations guiding the practice of outdoor advertising in the state.”

He appealed to all stakeholders who have approved signage structures to fulfill their obligations to government by ensuring that bills are promptly settled.

“All advertisement structures not paid for shall be removed in the ongoing massive enforcement exercise being carried out across the state by the agency,” he warned.

  • Aspirants kick against APC’s nomination fees

Prospective aspirants to various positions in the All Progressives Congress (APC) are upset by what they perceive as exorbitant nomination fees being demanded by the party for those aspiring to fly the party’s flag in next year’s elections.
At a media briefing in Abuja yesterday, the complainants, mainly young men and women, said the new fee regime being demanded by the party is capable of shutting out their generation from contesting elections.
The party proposes to charge state assembly aspirants N1. 1 million for nomination form but the group has proposed a fee of N550, 000.
For the House of Representatives, it’s N3.5 million, but the group is canvassing N2.2 million; while it has proposed N3.3 million against the party’s N8.5 million for Senate.
The youth group is proposing N5.5 million for the governorship race, against the party’s N22.5 million tag; while it has canvassed N11 million against the party’s N55 million for presidential nomination.
Okpokwu Ogenyi who addressed reporters on behalf of the group, expressed dismay over the party’s action and vowed to crush the new fee regime.
Ogenyi said, “As progressives and anti corruption crusaders of the APC-led administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, which is anchored on anti corruption, we expect the leadership of the party to reduce the cost of nomination forms.
“This is to accommodate the recently signed Not Too Young To Run bill. Instead, the NWC has proposed over 300 percent increment, making the APC unfriendly to many credible aspirants.
“Nigerians have begun to ask, what is the difference between the PDP and the APC? If the PDP sells nomination form for N600,000, the APC is supposed to sell the same for N200,000; where the cost of APC nomination form is higher than all other political parties in the country, it ridicules the anti corruption war of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“We also reject direct primary for the presidential ticket, thereby leaving the choice of electoral method for the states to make. We must do things in a manner that Nigerians should not begin to laugh at us.”
The group called on the leadership of the party to design a uniform method of primary election for all category of aspirants, either by direct election or through delegate votes.
“We believe in the leadership of our great party, especially our national leaders -President Muhammadu Buhari, Sen. Ahmed Bola Tinubu and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The time to save our party is now.

  • 2019: Anxiety grips PDP over 13 presidential aspirants

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to be at the crossroads over what to do with the high number of aspirants jostling for the party’s presidential ticket.

So far, 13 aspirants have indicated interest in the ticket and there were indications at the weekend that the number may increase in the days ahead.

Those in the race are former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwabo; President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki; former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido; former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi; and a former Special Duties Minister, Tanimu Turaki.

Others are a former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; another former Kano Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau; former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa; a former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang; an industrialist, Dr. Baba Datti Ahmed; and one Ahmed Buhari

It was gathered that several meetings the leadership of the party held with the aspirants seeking the possibility of pruning down the number have so far proved futile.

It was also learnt that fears expressed by the leadership of the party over the unwieldy number of the aspirants were said to have been waved the contestants, as they were all said to have insisted on contesting.

Fearing recriminations that the outcome of the primaries might engender, the party is said to be rallying the aspirants to sign an undertaking to accept and embrace the eventual winner.

Similarly, the party is also working on them to agree to join the eventual winner in the electioneering, with a proviso that none of them would defect from the PDP zone on account of losing the primaries.

Investigation revealed that the party’s governors have been in consultations with the leadership of the party and other key stakeholders, with the view to projecting one of the aspirants as a preferred candidate.

Discussants at the various fora during consultations were said to have put forward Tambuwal, Kwankwaso and Atiku for consideration.

It was reliably gathered that some powerful members of the northern establishment are split down the middle over Tambuwal and Kwankwaso.

It is said that the thinking in the camp of the northern power brokers centred on the need for the PDP to field a candidate from one of the states in the Northwest where Tambuwal and Kwankwaso hailed from.

Some of the party’s governors, particularly a vocal one from one of the states in the South-South, are said to have bought into the idea of making a pick from the Northwest.

Those that expressed preference for Tambuwal cited his relatively young age and the fact that he is not known to have any baggage that the government at the centre could hang on him.

Similarly, they were also said to have reasoned that his constitutional immunity as a serving governor would shield him from unnecessary distractions from security agencies during electioneering campaign.

On the other hand, they considered Kwankwaso very popular in Kano, with enough clout to challenge the cult-like following of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari, in the Northwest, particularly in Kano.

Kwankwaso’s chances were also weighed with the large voter population in the Northwest, particularly Kano where the former governor hails from and where he controls a large grassroots political group, the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

His performance in the 2014 primary election of the APC where he came a close second to Buahri, was also said to have come under consideration during the consultations.

Atiku was highly rated with having built functional political bridges across the six geopolitical zones and established goodwill across the socio-economic strata.

However, not a few of the stakeholders and the governors were said to have consider his advance age a drawback to his aspiration. Atiku will be over 72 before the presidential election.

So far, Bafarawa, Tambuwal, Dankwabo and Datti Ahmed had come to obtain their nomination papers in person. Others aspirants have been obtaining their nomination documents through proxies.

Kwankwaso personally picked his documents at 6.15 pm yesterday, while Atiku and Saraki obtained their forms earlier in the day through proxies.

Lamido was said to have quietly obtained his form in a similar manner earlier in the week. However, Makarfi, Shekarau, Jang and Ahmed Buhari were yet to pick the forms by close of work yesterday.
