  • Teenager stripped, assaulted for alleged N1,500 theft

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four women and two men for allegedly instigating an attack on a teenaged girl accused of stealing N1,500.

The suspects, Gbolahan Famuyiwa, Adewole Adesanya, Bukola Adesanya, Adedayo Adesanya, Mariam Saka and Funmilola Osuntayo were arrested yesterday at Somolu in Lagos State.

It was gathered that the victim, Ikimi Adewale, a hairdresser, has suffered physical, verbal and emotional torture from the suspects since April 18, when she was first accused of N16,000 theft.

The Nation learnt that the suspects allegedly put pepper in Adewale’s eyes, smeared it on her body, tied her neck, hands and legs as well as poured kerosene on her to force her to admit the theft.

They also allegedly assaulted the victim’s father and labelled him “father of a thief.”

Narrating her ordeal, Adewale said they tied her neck with a rope and sent her to buy powdered pepper, which they mixed with water and poured on her body twice.

She said: “In the morning of that day, I was eating with my siblings when Aunty Dayo called me to come and plait her hair. I told her I would come when I finished. I went to her room after my meal and she was not there.

“I just stayed there and suddenly I saw someone run out of the house.

In the evening of that day, they accused me of stealing N16,000. They later said they were looking for N6,000 and then N1,500.

“Then Iya Feranmi took fresh pepper and mixed inside water. She poured it in my eyes. The next day, Daddy Dayo came to our house and beat me up. He also beat up my father. They called some boys to beat us. One woman started begging them to leave us alone before they did. Iya Feranmi brought kerosene and matches. They poured kerosene on my body and wanted to strike a matchstick when someone took it from them. Auntie Muria brought belt they used to flog me.

“Since that day, anytime I passed by, they taunted me. They called me a thief and they tell my father that he gave birth to a thief. My mother was not around while all these were going on.

“Because of the pains I was in, I admitted I stole the money and they untied me. My father asked if they saw the money with me or if they saw me steal it, but Daddy Dayo slapped him.

“They scattered our apartment and in the process, they saw a cloth and new shoe and they accused me of using the money to buy them. Whereas, the cloth and shoe were bought for me and my siblings, but since mine was big, I folded it and kept it so that I will wear it when I grow to the size.”

Contacted, spokesman for the command, Chike Oti, a Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

He said the matter was brought to the attention of the command by a child’s right activist, adding that the case was transferred from the division to the Gender Unit at Ikeja.

  • Brother seeks justice for sister ‘assaulted’ by Indian employer

Brother seeks justice for sister ‘assaulted’ by Indian employer

A man, who claimed his younger sister, Faith Nwaneri, was allegedly assaulted by her Indian employer in Lagos, has cried out for justice.

The man, Ignatius Chukwuka, alleged that the Indian, Jay Keswani, one of the Aswani Brothers, hit his sister with a briefcase on August 12 at his Benefista Tower, Banana Island residence and she fainted.

Chukwuka said his sister was Personal Assistant (PA) to the Indian’s wife and worked Fridays to Wednesday, with Thursdays being observed as her day off.

He said Nwaneri was delayed at the gate that morning because she didn’t have the gate pass and had begged her way through in the last eight months, since her employers were yet to provide one for her.

Chukwuka claimed that when she eventually got into the residence, the man’s wife queried her for coming late and she explained that she was delayed at the gate for lack of pass.

Angered by her explanation, the woman was said to have confronted her husband, who then asked the young lady to give him the form he gave her to fill to commence the process.

Afraid that the Indian will tear the form like he usually did and fire her, Nwaneri, according to her brother, lied to him that she has submitted it, adding that she was just waiting for him to give her the money to process it.

“But when he insisted that he would follow my sister to the gate to collect the form at all cost, my sister seeing the anger in him quickly told him that she was still with the form and was waiting for him to give her the money so she could submit it for processing.

“He got furious that she lied to him and hit her with his briefcase. My sister fainted. At first, he thought it was a joke and hit her with his leg but when he pulled her over and noticed pool of blood, he quickly called his wife and they started pouring water on her head.

“At last, they revived her, left her at their apartment on the 19th Floor and they left for the office. After my sister regained consciousness, she struggled through the back staircase to the basement, where a Good Samaritan, helped her to Falomo Police Station, from there she was referred to Falomo Hospital, for treatment. There, my sister called me to come over and I paid the bills, then I took her home.

“When I contacted Mr Jay Keswani, to find out what would make an elderly man like him hit a lady, young enough to be his daughter and got her injured, he (Keswani ) claimed it’s an accident.

“The police at Falomo tried to invite him, but were refused entry into the island to serve him a letter of invitation. Security men at the tower claimed they were acting on instructions not to collect the invitation letter from the policeman who came to deliver the letter.

“The security men there at Benefista Tower also told us that they will do everything to silent the case, as they claimed it’s their responsibility to protect their clients as assigned. Since then, Keswani has been walking freely with no action taken against him.

“All efforts to reach him to resolve this matter by our lawyer proved abortive, as he has bluntly refused to comply.

“My question is what will prompt Keswani to hit a woman like that and claim it was an accident? If she had died in his apartment, perhaps, Keswani would have covered up this case, and had my sister thrown into the lagoon.

“Our lawyer wrote him for settlement and payment of compensation within seven days which ended yesterday (Saturday), but till now, there’s no response from him. It shows that this man has no regards for rule of law and Nigerian citizens,” he said.

•Police: erring officer will be sanctioned

A housewife, Mrs Abimbola Oriade, yesterday relived how a policeman, attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on SUCO Road, Abattoir, Agege, Lagos allegedly assaulted her.

Mrs Oriade, the Davebrooks Limited Media Relations Officer, claimed that the officer fled after beating her.

The woman said she was attacked by the policeman, who was in mufti in the presence of other policemen.

She alleged that she was beaten because she and other passengers attempted to criticise the driving of an RRS officer.

Mrs Oriade said: “We would have been killed, but for the intervention of God. When we complained at their office, they attacked me.”

According to eye witnesses, a commercial bus was going to Agege Pen Cinema when a lone RSS vehicle marked, NPF 408 D, made an illegal U-turn in front of a commercial bus and reversed close to the bus. The impact caused passengers to collide against one another.

The driver followed the van, which drove into the RRS office on SUCO Road.

Oriade alleged that at the RRS office she was beaten along with another passenger.

She said: “I was in a commercial bus, heading to Agege Pen Cinema, when the RRS van suddenly made an illegal U-turn in front of our bus. The RSS driver stepped on his brake, reversed and rammed into our bus, causing our heads to knock against one another and some against the body of the bus.

“The RRS van just took off without checking to see if we were okay. The driver of our bus pursued him. When the driver caught up with him in the traffic, he made another illegal U-turn again and ran into their base on SUCO Road, Abattoir. A policeman at the gate, Monday Okon refused to allow our bus to follow him into the base.

“We all alighted from the bus and stood in front of the RRS office. We were explaining the near-tragic accident to the officer at the gate, when one of the officers in mufti just came and just pounced on me. He started beating me and a male passenger. After slapping and hitting us repeatedly, he said that we should go and do our worst. I made statement at the Abattoir Police Station, Agege. The officer that took my statement was Gloria Ebororo.”

Efforts to get the authorities at the base to produce the policeman, proved abortive.

“The other policemen, rather than stop him or fetch him out, started begging me. They started begging after my husband came. They said I and my husband should forgive the officer that assaulted me and allow the matter to die. But I don’t want the matter to die. He slapped and punched me like he wanted to kill me.”

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) promised to investigate the matter.

She said any officer found culpable will be sanctioned.

RRS Public Relations Officer Femi Malik said the operative doesn’t use NPF on their vehicles’ plate numbers.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Chief Ifeanyichukwu Nwokoye, who was brutalised last Monday by men of the Department of State Security (DSS), has been hospitalised.

“We have sent messages to our leaders and we believe that very soon, the world will react.

  • Community head’s wife assaulted over land tussle

The Olokuta of Akureland, Chief Olatunbosun Miller, yesterday alleged that some people were after his life and family because of a land dispute.

He urged the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Patrick Dokumor, to come to his aid.

On Tuesday, Miller and his family were allegedly attacked by four men, led by a man simply identified as Dr. Oyewole, at their Oke-Aro home in Akure.

His wife, Mary, was injured with a machete and Miller was beaten up.

Miller said: “We were at home on Tuesday morning around 9:40am when someone knocked on my door. My wife opened the door and one of them came into my sitting-room and said my attention was needed. I went to the door and saw Oyewole with three others.

“They accused me of making peace with Col. Benson Akinroluyo in a land issue in Olokuta. I told them that it was the Deji of Akure that met with the military man and settled the issue with him. I also told them that all land in Akure and about 38 communities are now in the custody of the Deji.

“I explained to them that the 1950 Supreme Court Judgment has given land in Olokuta, Owena, Atosin, Alade Aponmu and other areas to Akure.

“They threatened to deal with me and one of them went into a Mercedes Benz marked AE 355AGN. He brought out a cutlass and attacked me. The cutlass hit my wife who was behind me and was holding our seven-month old baby. “They scattered everywhere. They ran away when my neighbours came out. I rushed to the Oke-Aro Police Station with my wife before she was taken to the General Hospital.

“I found out that Oyewole had earlier gone to the police station to report the matter, but when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) saw my wife, he ordered that they should be detained. They were later granted bail.

“My life is not safe. There was a time one of the four men trailed me to my church. This prompted my first petition to the police commissioner early this year. I am urging the commissioner to probe this matter and protect me.”

Oyewole alleged that Miller used a tractor to level his Cocoa farm at Aponmu.

He said: “We have been looking for him since he attacked our cocoa farm. Some chiefs are aware of his atrocity. He attacked us with a cutlass and injured his wife to implicate us.”

Police spokesman Wole Ogodo said he had not been properly briefed on the matter.
