  • Review your strategies, AIG Zone XI tells CPs

    Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone XI Leye Oyebade has directed the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the zone to review their security strategies.

    Oyebade, who supervises Osun, Oyo and Ondo state commands, gave the directive at a security meeting ahead of Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in the zone.

    A statement signed by the zone’s spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the AIG assured voters in the command’s area of responsibility that it would provide a safe and peaceful environment for the election.

    “While reviewing security arrangements in the last elections during a strategic meeting at his office in Osogbo, AIG Leye Oyebade reiterated the police commitment towards more peaceful elections.

    He lauded the CPs in the three states, Abiodun Ige (Osun), Shina Olukolu (Oyo) and Undie Adie (Ondo) for the robust security provided during the last election.

    “However, he directed them to go back to their respective AOR to dot their i’s and cross their t’s, especially as regards identified flashpoints so as to further beef up security and prevent recurrence of isolated cases witnessed during the presidential and National Assembly elections.

    “He assured the public of peaceful elections on Saturday. He commended the media for unbiased reportage and said the zone will ensure protection of The Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC) staff, materials, the electorate, journalists and other critical stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

    “While soliciting the support and cooperation of the public, he warned that the police would deal decisively with any person or group of persons making sinister plans to disrupt the forthcoming polls in the zone,” he said.

  • PSC approves promotion of two CPs to AIG, 16 DCPs to CPs

    The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of two Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).

    The Commission also approved the promotion of 16 DCPs to the rank of Commissioners of Police and the promotion of 3,665 others to various ranks.

    One of those promoted to the rank of AIG is Igbodo O. David who until the promotion was the Commissioner of Police Legal, Force Headquarters.

    Details of the promotion which was one of the high points of the 28th Plenary Meeting of the Commission is contained in a statement in Abuja yesterday by the Head of Public Affairs of the Commission, Ikechukwu Ani.

    The Plenary Meeting was also the last official function of the Chairman of the Commission, Mike Okiro whose tenure came to an end on Monday, June 11th, 2018.

    Details of the promotion reads: The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 3,665 senior Police officers.

    “Two Commissioners of Police, Igbodo O. David, Cp, Legal, Force Headquarters and Olalekan Abdulfatai, CP, Works also of Force Headquarters were promoted substantive Assistant Inspectors General of General.

    “16 Deputy Commissioners of Police were also promoted to Commissioners of Police. They include DCP Wakili Maye and DCP Kurawa Abdullahi Sarki.

    “The Commission also approved the promotion of 13 Assistant Commissioners of Police to Deputy Commissioners, 60 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners and 631 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents.

    “Promoted to ACP were Msheliza Simi Masomene, Samuel Osman Onoja of Police College, Oji River, Enugu State, Lateef Adio Ahmed and Umar  Kabir among others. Promoted CSPs included Adekunle Char Ige, Bassey Essang, Liman Salisu Sulaiman and Emmanuel Adam.”

    It further reads: “The Commission approved the promotion of 820 Deputy Superintendents of Police to substantive Superintendents. They include Ola Rosanla, Yusuf Abdulmumini and John Alesagba.

    “Others, whose promotions were approved by the Commission, were 1,922 Assistant Superintendents of Police, ASPs, promoted to Deputy Superintendents. They Include ASP Chijioke Ogbodo, Divisional Police Officer, Umumba, in Enugu State, Arukwe Edward and Ozochi Amaechi Marcel, Area Crime Officer, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State

    “201 Inspectors were promoted to Assistant Superintendent of police.”

    Ani also stated that the Commission also approved confirmation of appointments of 42 officers of different ranks, approved acting appointment for another 73 and converted 1,060 Specialists to General Duty.

    The Commission said the promotions have been forwarded to the IG for implementation in a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Commission, Musa Isitifanus.

    AIG orders investigation in Delta communal clash

    The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 5 Benin, Mr. Abubakar Mohammed, has ordered investigations into the crisis that rocked Idumuje-Ugboko community in Aniocha local government area of Delta State over the setting up a Sports University.

    Several properties and vehicles were said to have been burnt in the community by persons allegedly against the building of the institution by a former member of the House of Representatives, Prince Ned Nwoko.

    The order was issued after police operatives from Zone 5 carried out on the spot assessment of destruction of properties in the communities.

    At a meeting with the warring factions in Benin City, the AIG warned them to embrace peace pending outcome of the investigation.

    It was gathered that hoodlums torched properties belonging to supporters of the former lawmaker in the community.

    The crisis was reportedly caused by vast hectares of land that was approved by the late traditional ruler of Idumuje-Ugboko, Obi Albert Nwoko 111 and elders of the community for the building of the Sports University.

    Proprietor of the University, Prince Ned Nwoko who spoke to newsmen in Benin City accused his cousins of instigating the crisis in their bid to stop the smooth take off of the university.

    Nwoko said he genuinely acquired the plots of lands and a Memorandum of Understanding reached with the late Obi and the community.

    He said, “I am building it for the people of my village, local government, State and Nigerians.  It is only a foolish man that would not understand whether a university of this nature will be built.

    “It is the first of its king in Nigeria and probably in the whole of West Africa”.

    “We have 90 hectares of land, but, NUC said 100 hectares in its guidelines. We have prepared the master plan and signed (MoU), with the community where the project is established. The land forms 40% equity contribution of the people of ldumuye-Ugboko, but, there is a clause that if the land is not utilized within five years for the purpose that it was applied for, it will revert to the community back.”

    Ex-Enugu CP assumes office as new AIG Zone 5

    A new Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) has been announced for Zone 5,Benin which comprises  three states: Bayelsa, Delta and Edo. He is Mr Abubakar Mohammed, a former Commissioner of Police in Enugu State.

    This is contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, on Wednesday.

    Amaraizu said Abubakar’s assumption of duty followed his elevation to the rank of AIG and his successful completion of a course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, near Jos.

    He said that the new AIG would bring his wealth of experience in crime fighting and good police-community relations to bear in the zone.

    “Abubakar received the Security Watch Africa Award in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the most outstanding community policing command/commissioner of police,’’ he said.

    The police spokesman said that Abubakar had served the police in various capacities such as deputy Commissioner of Police in Ekiti and Kaduna States as well as Director of Nigeria Police Peace Keeping Directorate.

    “Also, he served at the Interpol Headquarters, Lyon in France as a specialised officer in Economic and Financial Crime Directorate.

    “He was the first black African to become an Assistant Director in the Interpol, and currently, he is the vice president of the Interpol representing Africa at the Interpol headquarters,’’ he said.

    Two suspected ritualists arrested as police raid den

    Operatives of the Assistant Inspector General of Police’ (AIG) Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS), Onikan, have arrested two suspected ritualists in Ogun State.

    Taiwo Adeleke, 47, and Kayode Oseni, 52, were apprehended at Abule Ifa, in Obafemi Owode after detectives uncovered the alleged ritualists’ den used by criminals to fleece people of their money.

    According to the zonal spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police  (SP), policemen had mounted on surveillance on the activities of the culprits, following a tip off.
    Adejobi said that the den, a massive ediffice, had names of prominent persons who might have fallen victims to the suspects inscribed on it.

    Also seen at the place we’re fetish materials/structures, charms, figurines and shrines, said Adejobi.

    He said: “The AIG Abdulmajid Ali led a team of senior officers including the Commissioner of Police (CP) Ogun State, Ahmed Iliyasu, Deputy Commissioner Operations Zone II, Suleiman Balarabe, a DCP,  ZIS Commander, Gbenga Megbope, a Chief Superintendent  (CSP) and Commander 16 Police Mobile Force, among others to the scene for on-the-spot assessment.

    “They also designed possible legal means to take over the dangerous den and dislodge the syndicate.

    “The AIG reiterated his readiness to set all machineries in motion to tackle crimes and criminality within the zone, assuring resents of effective policing. He urged them to be more vigilant and to challenge people who come around for such deals, ordering that those arrested be prosecuted.”

    Police nab three suspects for alleged highway extortion

    Police operatives attached to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone II, Onikan have arrested three persons who allegedly engage in illegal revenue collection and extortion.

    The suspects, Ajala Kabiru, Olasunkanmi Popoola and Kazeem Hassan were arrested around Berger on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Saturday following petitions from commercial motorists on their activities.

    It was gathered that transport unions petitioned the zonal command, lamenting the illegal toll charged by the suspects who pretend to be officials of government.

    In response to the petitions, the zone was said to have directed its Criminal Investigation and Intellignce Department (ZCIID) to investigate and arrest the culprits.

    Confirming the arrest, the spokesman for the zonal command, Muyiwa Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said his boss, AIG Abdulmajid Ali wants government revenue agencies to provide their agents with a means of identification to assist security operatives.

    “AIG Ali has challenged government revenue agencies/agents and departments to always issue marks of identification or personal identity cards to their staff or operatives for easy identification, so as to assist the police and other security operatives in the course of their duties of law enforcement and maintenance of law and order.

    “He assures the public of thorough cleansing of the zonal command and provision of adequate security of lives and property for all and sundry. He urges members of the public to reach him on his mobile line, 08055885544, whenever the need arise,” said Adejobi.

    Buhari appoints Kpotum Idris as Acting IGP

    President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, as Acting Inspector-General of Police.

    He replaces Solomon Arase, who retired yesterday after reaching the mandatory 60 years of age. Arase was appointed IG in April 2015.

    President spokesman Femi Adesina announced the appointment.

    The acting Inspector-General, who hails from Kutigi, Lavun, Niger state, was born on Jan. 15, 1959.

    Idris joined the Police in 1984, after graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture.He also holds a degree in Law from the University of Maiduguri.

    Idris has served in various commands and formations, working in the Police Mobile Force for 17 years as Unit Commander, Squadron Commander, and Commandant.

    He served as Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa and Kano states and was also the Commissioner of Police in charge of Police Mobile Force at the Force Headquarters.

    He was also at the United Nations Mission in Liberia and East Timor and was awarded “Medal of Merit” by the President of the Republic of East Timor in recognition of his service.

    Idris, who was in charge of Operations at the Force Headquarters before his appointment, will act in that capacity pending his confirmation.

    Arase spoke to reporters at the Villa on his successor. He said: “I want to formally introduce my successor, AIG Idris Kpotum, he is going to be in acting capacity until the Police Council confirms.

    “I want to seize this opportunity to thank Nigerians for the cooperation given me ýwhile I served as Inspector General of Police.  By extension, I want to also appeal to you to give the same support that you gave to me to my successor.

    “He is a younger man. So, I am sure he will be abreast with the contemporary policing issues.”

    The Acting IGP said: “Honestly by collective leadership, the Nigerian police is going to be governed by internationally recognised core values of policing ýeverywhere in the world, that is the issue of integrity and accountability, issue of respect for diversity, issue of compassion, issues of ensuring that our streets, our neighbourhoods, our communities remain safe.

    He promised that his tenure will ensure that the best service is provided for the country.

    Some officers who came with them to the Presidential Villa were jubilating that the state was producing the IGP for the first time.
