  • Urhoghide: Edo APC petitions Police, wants thugs sanctioned

The Edo State Chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5 Police Headquarters, over the invasion of Benin Airport by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youths allegedly sponsored by Senator Matthew Urhoghide.

In a petition through their counsel, C.I. Aiguobarueghian, the APC said that it was condemnable that the PDP youths gained entrance and disrupted peace at the airport despite existing regulations against sponsoring of thugs to the vicinity of any airport in Nigeria.

According to the letter, “Our client informed and we verily believed it that on the 27th of April, 2018, youths numbering hundreds and led by one Mr. Thaddeus Irabor (PDP State Youth Leader) invaded the Benin Airport awaiting their sponsor, Senator Matthew Urhoghide. Cultural troupes were also on ground singing and dancing strenuously awaiting the “heroic arrival” of their son who had just muted the possibility of impeaching the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, on the floor of the Senate. Whilst the troupes were in a frenzy to outdo each other, the young men contracted by Mr. Thaddeus Irabor indulged in gulping of alcohol and abuse of drugs including the smoking of indian hemp within the precinct of the airport.”

APC said  it has it on good authority that before the arrival of the Senator, the restive youths demanded for the fees agreed to mobilise them to the airport from the said Mr. Thaddeus Irabor, who told them to await the arrival of the Senator who is coming with the money, noting, “This apparently did not go down well with the now intoxicated hirelings who turned on their principal for failure to meet with their contractual agreement. In the orgy of violence, every prominent figure of the PDP in sight became a ready target. The matter got out of hand when the Senator who purportedly held their money arrived the airport and instead of paying the hoodlums as agreed, he waved them away as ignorant and illiterate. The youths got incensed, chanting Urhoghide Ole! The said Urhoghide had to be cocooned in the VIP Lounge of the airport.”

Noting that it took the intervention of Governor Godwin Enogheghase Obaseki to whisk the Senator out of the ravaging fawns of his hireling, the party said the State Youth leader of PDP, Mr. Thaddeus Irabor, was not that lucky as his dogs literarily turned on him, adding that the unfortunate and avoidable incident caused workers and travellers alike so much psychological trauma.”

According to him, “Our client call is to put the matter in perspective as the furtive effort to put the blame on its party is a total non-starter. First how did the APC youths know the clandestine arrangement to welcome the Senator following his ill-fated motion. What is their interest if Matthew Urhoghide is welcomed. There would have been no reason to resort to fighting without provocation. It is not in the character of the APC to throng to the airport.”

He said the incident was avoidable if the Police had kept to the extant rules banning groups from congregating at airports. “Our client therefore sincerely appeals to you to use your good offices taking into cognizance an extant rule or directive of the Inspector General of Police, issued in November, 2013 by IGP M. D. Abubakar, banning political rallies, parties and gathering in and around the airport. You will recall sir that that order became necessary because there was break down of law and order when the then Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Ameachi, was to receive his guest at the airport in 2013 and there was serious altercations with security personnel.”

The party continued, “The ban is total across all the airports in Nigeria. Those who invited people to the airport for reception in breach of the above extant rules and the people they used must be promptly brought to book. The said rules also carried dire consequences. This will act as deterrence and forestall future reoccurrence. Those who brought ant- infested firewood to the house should not complain about visit by lizards. In this case they must be made to face the consequences of their actions. The business of security of life is our common responsibility that cannot be sacrificed on the altar of political shenanigan.”

  • Umahi to Opposition: ‘You can’t intimidate us with police’

Umahi to Opposition: ‘You can’t intimidate us with police’

Apparently irked by persistent arrests of some government officials by security agencies suspected to be instigated by some opposition politicians, Governor David Umahi on Wednesday said the state shall no longer remain silent in the sight of the unprovoked arrests.

Umahi stated this while receiving the new Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 6, Calabar, Tilli Abubakar.

He described as alarming the rate in which opposition politicians influence arrest and transfer of cases from the state to Abuja and Calabar respectively with sole aim of intimidating the people of the state and browbeating them to submission.

He said his administration has uncovered plots by the opposition to embark on random arrests of perceived government strongmen with the sole purpose of transferring them to the Force headquarters where they will be detained till election is over.

He warned that from henceforth, his administration will no longer allow such brazen intimidation of the law abiding citizens of the state by opposition politicians whom he described as desperate politicians.

“We don’t like our people being arrested here and taken to Abuja and Calabar respectively over various flimsy cases, we have all the police establishments in the state, why should a matter that is happening in a police post be sent directly to the Commissioner of Police without going through the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area?

“We will resist this type of wickedness and intimidation, any crime that is committed here should be investigated in the place the crime was committed. We are not against the police doing their job but our people have died in this type of incessant arrests and transfer to Abuja and Calabar”, he said

“We have had cases of these people dying in accident on their way to Abuja and in some cases, assassins have disguised themselves as policemen and army to come and arrest our people and get them killed on the way”

“We will not allow it to happen again in the state. Politicians thinking of coming to arrest my people and keep them away during election will be resisted.  We will not accept this intimidation. If they come with 500 policemen, we will raise over 5000 men to resist them”, Umahi added

The Governor also appealed to the AIG to help bring to an end the lingering crisis between some parts of Ebonyi state and Cross River state by establishing a boarder command to take care of the crisis in the affected regions.

Responding, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Tilli Abubakar described governor Umahi as the most police friendly governor in the country and lauded his support towards the police force in the state and the country in general.

He commended the governor for rebuilding the State headquarters of the police, adding “the gate of Police headquarters is more beautiful than the gate of the government house. The governor is the most security conscious governor in the country”.

“He built the most expensive gate for the command and he is doing everything good to assist the police and carries every security agencies along in the discharge of his official duties”, the AIG added.. Ends

According to him, discipline remains the bedrock of the police.

He charged them to utilise the knowledge gained during the course for the good of the force and general public.

“This ceremony is very remarkable because this is the first course and training the college has conducted in 2016.

“The ADC is design to meet up with the need of continuously developing manpower resources and improve the professional capability of officers.

“Having acquired this knowledge, the expectation of the police high command is that you go back to your respective commands and formations and exhibit better performance.

  • Police redeploy Mbu to Lagos, Ogun

Police redeploy Mbu to Lagos, Ogun

CONTROVERSIAL police officer Mbu Joseph Mbu got a new posting yesterday.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Mbu was deployed to Lagos from Abuja to take charge of the Zone 2 Command. There are two states –Lagos and Ogun – covered by the command, with its headquarters in Onikan on Lagos Island.

Mbu will replace Umaru  Manko, a former Lagos State Police Commissioner who has been moved to the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos.

Inspector General of Police (IG) Suleiman Abba announced Mbu’s deployment along with 27 other senior officers.

A statement by force spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu said Abba charged the officers to be more service-oriented in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities and urged the public to also partner closely with the force in its determination to ensure improved safety and security.

The other officers, who are expected to move immediately are: Tambari Y. Muhammed, Mohammed Abubakar, Aderenle Shinaba, Musa A. Daura, Johnson A Ogunsakin, Patrick D. Dokumor, Christopher T. Dega, Usman Akila Gwarry and Bala A Haassan.

Others are: Ikemefuna R. Okoye, Mohammed J. Gana, Sule Mamman, Adisa B. Bolanta, Edgar Tam Nanakumo, Sabo Ringim Ibrahim, Wilfred Eje Obute, Kalafite Helen Adeyemi, Ibrahim Maishanu, Jubrin Olawale Adeniji, Lawal Tanko, Ballah Magaji Nasarawa, Yahaya Garba Ardo, Buhari Tanko, Olufemi A. Adenaike, Umaru Abubakar Manko, Irimiya F. Yerima and Mark Adamu Idakwo.

The Police Service Commission has also approved the promotion of Commissioner of Police, Adenike Fehintola Abuwa to AIG.

Mbu’s tenure as Rivers State Police commissioner was turbulent. When he was transferred to Abuja before his promotion to AIG, he also continued in the same fashion. An AIT reporter, Amaechi Anakwe, who described him as “controversial” on a television programme was arrested and detained for almost 24 hours. He was eventually taken to court but no charges were pressed. There was outrage as Mbu’s action was interpreted as an abridgement of freedom of speech.

He also confronted the BringBackOurGirls campaigner pushing for the freedom of the abducted Chibok girls.

Lagos APC spokesman Joe Igbokwe said: “Mbu must understand that this is Lagos. Since Lagos was created in 1967, it has been in the hands of the progressives. It is neither Rivers nor Abuja.

“This is a special state where the best minds live. It is the city of civil societies and the media.

“We know his antecedents. We boldly welcome Mbu to Lagos but he should tread carefully and if he fails to heed our advice, we will run him down.

“But we will advise him to drop all the excess baggage he exhibited in Port Harcourt.”
