  • Association to establish micro-credit bank

PResident, Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria (ASBON), Dr Femi  Egbesola has said his association is establishing a micro-credit bank to enable it raise funds for its members and other entrepreneurs.

This becomes necessary since commercial banks were not extending much support to the sector. He noted that the sector has been hit by inadequate funds and high interest rate, which is as high as 25 per cent, adding that financial institutions have become reluctant to meet the funding needs of the Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) segment, thus making it difficult to source capital for expansion.

Access to capital, he noted, has remained one of the major challenges hampering businesses, hoping  the banks would help alleviate some of these challenges.

He said the association was ready to empower entrepreneurs who had persistently complained of capital and high interest rates.

For him, if the country must  develop, it has to be done by local business entrepreneurs,  reasoning that it was time to empower Nigerians.

Egbesola said ASBON will not relent in working with the government to empower the private sector, which is the engine of growth in any society, adding that empowering the private sector is about the people, the businesses, the economy and the country.

  • Association seeks govt’s intervention

The Chairman, Association of Secondary Aluminium Producers of Nigeria, Adebanjo Adeyanju has raised an alarm on moves by some major players in the industry to stifle and monopolise the market. He has therefore alerted the Federal Government and the Nigerian public to prevail on them against what he called dangerous consequences of their actions. He also disclosed that the clandestine move is being championed by the Coil Coaters Association of Nigeria (CCAN).

Speaking at a news conference in Lagos, the chairman said members of CCAN had been involved in writing petitions against his members, even as he advised government to evolve policies and programmes in the aluminium industry that will be favourable only o their members.

Adeyoju said: “CCAN, many of who are foreign-owned companies, exploited the Nigerian market by charging exorbitantly prices for aluminium roofing products thereby rendering government’s policy on affordable housing impracticable. Due to the significant competition created by our members in the sector, prices of aluminium products have reduced and steps are being taken by our members to deepen the technical expertise of Nigerians in the production of aluminium products.”

The chairman, therefore called for a level playing field where one association will not have an edge over the other. He said that “the Federal Government should evolve policies and programmes that are broad-based and structured towards retaining the current surge in the local participation of Nigerians in the aluminium industry.”

Patience Jonathan dumps association of friends

Success has many relatives, goes the saying. Even if one did not know this before now, the load of goodwill messages that have come the way of the Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan, during her thanksgiving party last weekend, has lent credence to that assertion. It is therefore not surprising that many women in the corridors of powers are fervently courting her attention after abandoning her during her trying times.

The First Lady, who recently opened up for the first time on the health crisis that almost claimed her life last year, admitted that she was in coma for more than one week. She also said she underwent surgery nine times in one month. Now she is back and better. This explains why she staged an elaborate thanksgiving party in Aso Villa last Sunday, in appreciation of God’s goodness.

However, some of her friends, whom she said abandoned her on her sick bed, are now trying to worm themselves back into her heart, singing her praise to high heavens. Happenstances gathered that the First Lady has now separated her real friends from favour seekers and has also dumped the Association of Friends of the First Lady of Nigeria (FFLN).

In a bid to be part of the group, not a few women in the social space, particularly the high society, are engaged in tireless hustle to be part of it. But at the moment, the First Lady has decided to severe her relationship with them.
