    Weep not, Asue Ighodalo!

    • By Fred Itua

In the tragic pages of Weep Not, Child, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o tells the story of youthful dreams caught in the web of colonial betrayal, societal unrest, and personal disillusionment. It is a narrative of broken promises, false hope, and the agonising realisation that the world is far more brutal than it first appears.

If ever there was a modern Nigerian parallel to this timeless African tragedy, it would be the political misadventure of Asue Ighodalo—a man whose ambition was inflated by praise singers, deceived by a crumbling godfather, and ultimately buried under the weight of a futile legal fantasy.

Weep Not, Asue Ighodalo! For what you are experiencing is not failure; it is awakening. You were a man of numbers, boards, and balance sheets until someone whispered to you in Government House that you could be a king. They said you were a technocrat. They said you were “the future.” They promised delegates. They promised structure. They promised that with Governor Obaseki behind you, the PDP ticket—and then the state—was yours for the taking.

You believed them. That was your first fundamental mistake.

Like Njoroge in Ngũgĩ’s novel, you had dreams—innocent, idealistic, but disconnected from the harsh political realities of Edo State. You ignored the fact that you were being imposed on a political party that was already fractured, fatigued, and functionally split. You were parachuted into a war you neither started nor understood. You mistook Governor Obaseki’s fading influence for political capital. And you didn’t notice when the same man who held your hand on the nomination form slyly let it go on the steps of the courtroom.

Now, the cheers have gone silent. The ‘Asue 4 Governor’ banners are gone from the streets. The WhatsApp groups are dry. Your “structure” has scattered. And Obaseki—the man who led you into this political ambush—is nursing his own bruises, lobbying Abuja to cut a deal for himself.

So, Weep Not, Asue Ighodalo! The court case you filed was never going to yield fruits. Not when the PDP itself disowned your emergence in broad daylight. Not when the primary that gave you a ticket was so tattered that it collapsed under the mildest judicial scrutiny. Even your cheerleaders began singing a new tune halfway. The same voices that shouted “Our Candidate!” in February were privately telling reporters by June that you should “withdraw for party unity.”

You are a man of reason, Sir. You built a reputation in the corporate world for being deliberate, meticulous, and methodical. What happened to that man? What happened was politics—a space where truth is elastic, alliances are temporary, and ambition without grassroots is suicide.

The good news is that it’s not too late to wake up. You were misled, but you’re not destroyed. You were used, but you’re not useless. Politics spat you out—but your boardroom is still waiting. There’s no shame in returning to what you do best. The shame would be in staying lost in a wilderness designed by people who never planned to journey with you till the end.

Like Njoroge, you must come to terms with the brutal end of a hopeful beginning. But unlike Njoroge, you can still chart a new path—one not paved with deceitful endorsements or hollow declarations, but with the quiet, firm steps of a man who has learned his lessons.

Weep Not, Asue Ighodalo! Dust off the ashes of 2024. Fold the campaign posters. Close the brief. Tell your remaining loyalists to rest. Then walk away—not in defeat, but in dignity.

Because some dreams are not denied. They are simply deferred to where they truly belong. In your case, perhaps that place is a virtual boardroom—not Osadebe Avenue.

JUST IN: Edo Gov election tribunal set to deliver judgement

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja is set to rule on the petition filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.

The three-man panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, had reserved judgment on March 3 after final written addresses were adopted by all parties.

Ighodalo and the PDP are contesting the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging electoral irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022.

The petitioners presented 19 witnesses and submitted numerous documents to support their claims, while the APC called four witnesses. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not call any witnesses.

Supporters from both parties have gathered in Abuja, eagerly awaiting the tribunal’s decision, which is set to be delivered shortly.

Edo PDP chair confident tribunal will return mandate to Ighodalo

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo State chapter, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, has expressed confidence that the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja will right the wrong and return the “duly-given” mandate to the PDP and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

He alleged that Edo residents had been put through unprecedented distress and chaos in the past three months that Governor Monday Okpebholo and the All Progressives Congress (APC) had held sway with a mandate he claimed to be illegitimate.

Aziegbemi, yesterday at a news conference in Benin, said Ighodalo would ensure good governance.

Okpebholo, on Sunday, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, berated the leaders of PDP in Edo, while describing the party as being ill and on life support, with PDP’s chieftains gasping for relevance.

Edo PDP chairman said: “Having adopted our final written addresses, following our watertight documentary evidence at the tribunal, which we believe has exposed the electoral heist of September 21, 2024, we are confident that the tribunal will right the wrong.

“After the adoption of our written addresses, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the Chairman of the Edo APC, Jarret Tenebe, in separate television interviews, said the PDP dumped documents on the tribunal, without presenting enough witnesses.

“As we have always said, the APC leadership lacks the acumen to read and understand our petition. It is the members of the tribunal who possess the expertise and acumen to thoroughly examine and understand our petition, not the APC leadership.”

Aziegbemi reiterated that the primary responsibility of any government was the protection of lives and property of residents, but alleged that the Okpebolo administration had failed abysmally since its November 12, 2024 inauguration.

He said: “In the past two weeks, no fewer than 35 innocent Edo residents have been brutally killed, including Batemue Philip Ebo, Christopher Bello and Victor Ogedengbe, whose lives were tragically cut short by militant groups and killer herdsmen. Others have sustained injuries, and property worth millions of naira have been destroyed.

“The people of Edo State are under siege. This was even acknowledged by Okpebholo’s political ally, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, during his public outcry on the floor of the Senate in Abuja, where he lamented the worsening insecurity in Edo State under Okpebholo’s watch.

“From Edo South to Edo Central to Edo North, killings and violent attacks have become rampant. The state, which was repositioned as one of Nigeria’s safest places to live and do business during the Godwin Obaseki-led administration, has now become so unsafe, gaining a notorious reputation as Nigeria’s capital of kidnapping and violent crimes, as kidnappers and other criminals now see it as a safe haven, the weakest link in the country’s security framework.”

Edo PDP chairman also alleged that transportation employees and employers in the state had seen their lives turned into a living hell by thugs and hoodlums, who harassed, intimidated and demanded unlawful levies, under the veiled protection of the Okpebholo administration.

PDP, Ighodalo tender more documents at Edo tribunal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo State chapter, and its governorship candidate during the September 21, 2024 election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, yesterday tendered more documents at the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led three-member election petitions tribunal.

PDP and Ighodalo on Friday tendered over one thousand documents at the tribunal.

The counsel to the petitioners (PDP and Ighodalo), Ken. Mozia, SAN, yesterday tendered 55 Certified True Copies (CTCs) of polling units voter registers used in the election, CTC of 56 accreditation figures of extracts from the independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s) Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and 72 CTCs of extracts of accreditation figures from the BVAS.

Mozia also tendered 75 CTCs of INEC’s results’ viewing, containing form EC8A and 70 CTCs’ of INEC’s polling units booklets, containing form EC25B, as well as 66 copies of polling units voter register and 125 CTCs of form EC8A from IREV.

The petitioners’ counsel equally tendered CTCs of certificates of compliance with BIVAS report, in respect of the 133 polling units earlier tendered as exhibits, and CTCs of serial numbers of BIVAS deployed in 133 polling units.

The counsel to the respondents (INEC, Governor Monday Okpebholo and All Progressives Congress), Abdullahi Aliyu, SAN, Offiong Offiong, SAN, and Chief Ferdinand Orbih, SAN, respectively, however, raised objections to the admissibility of the petitioners’ documents, but they promised to give their reasons at the address stage.

Seven of 18 political parties that participated in the election, which filed petitions at the tribunal, were the PDP, Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Accord (A), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Action Alliance (AA), which wanted their candidates to be declared winner of the keenly-contested poll, instead of Okpebholo of the APC.

Edo Tribunal: Asue Ighodalo reaffirms confidence in judiciary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, has expressed gratitude to the people of Edo State and reaffirmed his confidence in the judiciary as the tribunal proceedings over the disputed September 2024 governorship election gain momentum.

Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse on Wednesday, Ighodalo addressed concerns raised by supporters and condemned attempts to intimidate those involved in the legal process.

“We strongly believe that the judiciary will do the right thing, and we’re looking forward to the outcome of the tribunal,” he said.

“Our focus remains reclaiming our mandate and working positively for the good people of Edo State. We will take poverty out of our land, eliminate fear and intimidation, and unlock the great potential of this state.”

Ighodalo also commended the resilience and steadfastness of Edo citizens over the past three months.

He said: “I want to thank the good people of Edo State for coming out in massive numbers to vote for us on September 21 and for keeping faith through the difficulties.

“They’ve stayed calm in the face of intimidation and harassment, living on the strong hope that our efforts to reclaim our mandate will be successful.”

However, the candidate also highlighted a series of alarming incidents that have marred the tribunal proceedings, including an attack by a masked gunman outside the courthouse.

“These acts of violence and harassment are deliberate distractions meant to make us take our eyes off the ball,” Barr. Ighodalo said.

I would be recalled that shortly before the tribunal session began on Wednesday, panic erupted outside the courthouse when unidentified individual opened fire near the tribunal venue.

Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP’s Edo Caretaker Committee, condemned the incidents.

For Ighodalo, the incidents underscore the importance of staying focused.

“There are many distractions being thrown our way, but we will not be deterred,” he told reporters.

“Our goal remains ensuring that we go through this tribunal process and hopefully emerge with the mandate the people of Edo State gave my deputy Osarodion Ogie and myself.”

He painted a hopeful vision for the future of the state under his leadership.

“We will take Edo State to the next level. By God’s grace, we will remove poverty, eliminate intimidation, and make our people happy,” Ighodalo said.

“We urge our people to stay strong and prayerful,” Ighodalo concluded. “By the grace of God, we will reclaim our mandate and deliver the change that Edo state deserves.”

Edo 2024: PDP’s Ighodalo meets with EU delegation to Nigeria

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State for the September 21, 2024 election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, on Wednesday, July 24, played host to the three-man European Union (EU) Pre-Election Diplomatic Watch delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS in his campaign office in Benin.

The meeting, which was at the request of the EU, according to a letter signed by the EU Ambassador, Samuela Isopi, was to discuss the Edo governorship poll with Ighodalo and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, as well as other PDP stakeholders.

The delegates said their mission was for pre-election assessment purposes, basically to gain a sense of how the preparations were coming along, issues that required the attention of international partners such as the EU, both to ensure that the election was violence-free and in the deployment planning.

Ighodalo thanked the members of the delegation for coming and assured them that his party was ready for the election and that it had been conducting issue-based campaigns within the ambit of the law, by keenly following the instructions of the electoral regulatory body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The standard bearer of PDP used the opportunity to urge the EU Commission and the security forces to ensure that they provided a level playing field for all the governorship candidates so that the election would be a true reflection of the will of the Edo people.

Ighodalo: I will not disappoint Edo residents

Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 21 election in Edo State, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, yesterday said he would neither disappoint nor fail Edo residents if elected.

He said it was time to move Edo State forward and promised to build on the solid foundation laid by Governor Godwin Obaseki in all sectors.

Ighodalo spoke at a town hall meeting for the presentation of his manifesto tagged: ‘The Pathway to Prosperity for All’, held at Urhokpota Hall in Oredo Local Government, Benin.

The PDP standard-bearer was accompanied by his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, a lawyer, who is also the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chairman of Oredo Local Government, Dr. Tom Obaseki, as well as other chieftains of the party.

Ighodalo, a Lagos lawyer, described his comprehensive manifesto as a contract with Edo people.

He vowed to fulfil his promises to the people, and to follow everything in the manifesto religiously, in view of his genuine love for Edo residents, so as to make them happy.

He urged the electorate to investigate candidates of the 15 other parties that would participate in the crucial election, particularly their antecedents, to know whether they did well in their past activities or not, to enable them know the right person to vote for.

PDP leaders, members hold solidarity march for Ighodalo in Edo

Thousands of leaders, members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State on Tuesday trooped out in solidarity march for the candidacy of Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the governorship standard bearer for the September 21, 2024 election and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie.

Mmembers and leaders of the Asue/Ogie Campaign Management Council, including its Director-General, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen; PDP chieftain, John Yakubu; the campaign council’s Deputy Director, Media and Publicity, Rev. Olu Martins; and Edo Speaker Blessing Agbebaku among others, led the march through the city centre, Ring Road, chanting solidarity songs, amid drumming and dancing.

The rally led to gridlock for many hours in adjoining streets to Ring Road, including the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin.

One of the organisers of the march, Austin Osakue, claimed that last week’s judgment of on PDP’s primary election that produced Ighodalo as the governorship candidate of the party, was a kangaroo judgment that would not stand, while calling on Edo people to remain committed and vote for the party and Ighodalo on September 21.

Osakue said: “Do not be distracted, we will not surrender, we will not retreat, we will not be dissuaded by their lies. My message is that to win an election, you must cast votes. As we know Ighodalo, that is how we know Ogie, a man of humility. When a man is humble, even God will fetch firewood for him.

“Ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, nobody can intimidate us. If they like, let them be carrying court judgment around.

“There is nothing in the judgment of the FHC, Abuja. Instead of them to be campaigning, they are celebrating court judgment. They cannot even campaign, because their candidate is a liability. With our voter cards, we will punish them in Edo State on September 21.”

Ighodalo, who was accompanied by his running mate and other chieftains of PDP in Edo, while also speaking during the march, noted the time had come for the happiness of members of the party in the state to continue.

He said: “The time has come for us to have more work, the time has come for us to have more money in our pockets, and by the grace of God, by September 21, when you would have voted for me and Ogie, more upward movement will come.

“I want you to remain strong. I want you to remain happy. Do not be afraid of anything. God is in control. Everybody should get their PVCs ready, so that by September 21, we will vote for PDP to ensure that the votes are counted, and we will follow the votes to the collation centres, until we are announced the winner and the state will continue to prosper.”

Ighodalo also admonished supporters and members of PDP in Edo to remain calm and continue to campaign in their units, wards, local governments and the state, in order to ensure victory, and for him to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki on November 12.

  • Asue Ighodalo, Edo elections and the media

Asue Ighodalo, Edo elections and the media

    By Duke of Shomolu

Responsible media is a key ingredient for healthy democracy.

This statement is a truism that cannot be refuted by any logical mind.

The media plays a very vital role of not only disseminating information but also that of guiding thought processes and providing decison taking inputs as we drive towards the very incisive element in the democratic process of making choices while still helping to maintain a healthy engagement within the process.

We are expected to choose our candidates based on our clinical assesments of his capacity, his programmes amongst other such variables and it is the media that provides the vehicle with which the very important ingredient – information is delivered to the electorate.

So you can imagine my deep worry when certain elements of the media ran with the obviously wrong interpretation of the recent judgement of a Federal High Court on the 378 delegates in the February 22 PDP primary elections in Edo State.

The headlines were bold and daring. They screamed in their vacousness the alleged disqualification of Mr Ighodalo who was and is still the bona fide candidate of the PDP in Edo State.

With the way the media has evolved in the last 20years, standards have really dropped leading to irresponsible reporting driven in some cases by citizen journalism.

Today, everybody with N100 data is reporting, analysing and disseminating News usually with dire consequences as a result of the inpurity that is being pushed out.

But sadly, what was really alarming in this particular case, was the involvement of what I would want to call responsible media outlets in this fraud

A TV station who prides itself as a multiple award- winning station also joined in this charade.

It led its reporting of the issue with the banal – Asue Ighodalo is disqualified dirge.

This was quite disappointing and disgraceful to say the least cos the CTC of the ruling is there for all to see.

The CTC did not in any way allude to the disqualification of Mr Ighodalo who I must say is the front runner in the campaigns but instead stated very clearly that the delegates were lawfully elected and as such must participate as Ad Hoc ward delegates emphasizing adherence to the PDP constitution and the electoral act of 2022.

Read Also: Lagos reassesses resilience strategy to sustain development

How this translates to his disqualification even in my unlettered eye continues to beat my imagination.

This deliberate attempt at falsifying an obviously well researched judgement by certain sections of the media could if not well engaged go a long way to reorder the inevitable flow of  support towards Mr Ighodalo’s candidacy

But luckily, the campaign has come out with a strongly worded statement which has particularly and forcefully re affirmed his candidacy while also taking its time to put the judgement in its proper context.

Furthermore, in my discussions with top members of the campaign, it was very clear that the leadership of the campaign is not loosing sleep over this but instead has remained very focused in pursuing its assured agenda of winning the elections.

For me as a concerned observer, my prayer remains that the media would remain responsible to its ethics and push very professionally the very strong ethos of balance and accurate reporting as we head towards the very critical parts of this journey.

This prayer I dare say is for both mainstream media outlets and the myriad of citizen driven media outlets nestled very comfortably within the ambits of a very wild and oft irrepressible  Social Media enclave.

  • EDO 2024: It’s time for Asue Ighodalo to say ‘So Long, Farewell’, Kassim Afegbua advises

EDO 2024: It’s time for Asue Ighodalo to say ‘So Long, Farewell’, Kassim Afegbua advises

By today’s judgment of the Federal High Court, that invalidated the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) delegates election in Edo State, it’s time for Asue Ighodalo to say ‘so long, farewell’ to the forthcoming election in the state, Prince Kassim Afegbua has said .

Afegbua, who is the Medial Consultant to the APC Governorship Campaign Council, in a statement, titled ‘Edo 2024: PDP’s Fitting Poetic Justice’, advised Ighodalo, the beneficiary of the invalidated exercise, to put on his thinking cap and be wise enough to ‘decipher the handwriting on the wall’.

EDO 2024: PDP’s FITTING POETIC JUSTICE

This is a wake up call on all Edo citizens, home and abroad, to be wary of those individuals only traceable to Edo who are desperately seeking to foist themselves on the state for their selfish reasons.

We had alerted the state before now that the PDP primaries that produced Asue Ighodalo was manifestly unconstitutional and grossly in discordance with the provisions of its own constitution; but because of the desperation and megalomania of Governor Godwin Obaseki, he wasn’t going to let even the law get in his way in his bid to implant his godson, Asue.

Obaseki threw caution to the wind and imposed Asue Ighodalo.

Now those delegates who are statutorily recognised by the constitution of the party and the Electoral Act but excluded from the exercise, have proved that they are with their salt.

The Obaseki-led primaries worked from answer to question, manipulating and doctoring the entire process to arrive at a fait accompli.

They were too much in a hurry and have now been beaten at their dubious game of manipulation.

Governor Obaseki’s desperation to install his godson, Asue Ighodalo, indeed heightened the political tension in the state.

The length and breadth of his depravity could not be ascertained by any metric; but the latest verdict by the Federal High Court, Abuja invalidating the dubious primaries of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, is a fitting poetic justice; finally the 378 validly elected delegates who were disenfranchised during the sham Obaseki so-called primaries, have been well served by the law. Democracies all over the world recognize the use of statutory delegates to nominate a party’s candidate.

Bona Fide candidates do not emerge by selection or handpicking, as was done by the Obaseki-led PDP orchestra that produced Asue Ighodalo.

Read Also: Edo 2024: Asue Ighodalo pledges commitment to building Edo that works for all

Obaseki, being a petulant man, in his desperation, seared himself reasoning. This is his trait that has brought Edo to a near kneeling posture today.

We salute the courage, thoroughness  and uprightness of Justice Ekwo of the Federal High Court, who painstakingly delivered their judgment based on the exclusion of the 378 delegates.

Justice has not only been served, but has been seen to be served.

The judgment has restored the sanctity of the nomination process and internal democracy in any electoral contest and also upheld  the confidence and trust reposed in the justice system of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The PDP must know by now that there is no shortcut to Osadebe Avenue. Asue by now knows that Obaseki is his problem not his advantage. He is caught in a catch-22 situation.

If the PDP desires to govern the state in good faith, they ought to realise from day one that the people and the delegates truly matter.

Imposition of candidates is the hallmark of electoral emperors who think everything is about money and influence.

Governor Obaseki has not only become dictatorial and undemocratic, his depravity and desperation have destroyed the very foundation of a healthy political contest which Edo state is known for, sweeping away a few erstwhile good men with him.

**By today’s judgment, Asue Ighodalo, one of the cowboys from Lagos, should be able to decipher the handwriting on the wall.

It’s time for him to say so-long, farewell!!! Democracy is not a flash in the pan affair; it is an all-inclusive exercise that provides all voters and candidates the opportunity of a level playing field.

We must stress now that the court has proved that in a democracy, the people, no matter how lowly, must be allowed to have a say in who governs them.

Today’s judgement, even in the eyes of the least discerning, is apropos. That is the irreducible minimum that healthy political contestation offers.

In the APC, we have assured the people of our determination to offer a people-driven and all inclusive administration when Senator Monday Okpebholo assumes the reins of government. He will not only restore the hope of the common man, he will lead with the fear of God and relate with our people solicitously. This election offers the people a unique opportunity to chase away those economic predators and buccaneers who have held the state hostage in their shared determination to destroy our common patrimony. The APC and Senator Monday Okpebholo are the ONLY ingenious  candidates for the election. We rely largely on the people to chart a new roadmap to recover Edo state from its present octopoidal grip of the Obaseki-led administration. We remain resolute in our commitment to achieve our objectives to relaunch the state on a solid pedestal. Edo will surely rise again.

God bless you all. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Prince Kassim Afegbua is the media consultant, Edo 2024 APC Campaign Council.
