We’ll sort it out, Atalanta coach speaks on touchline row with Lookman

Atalanta head coach Ivan Juric has played down his touchline altercation with Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman during their 1-0 victory over Olympique Marseille on Wednesday night.

Lookman, who was substituted in the 75th minute for Yunus Musah, appeared visibly upset as he left the pitch.

Juric was seen grabbing the player’s arm before other staff members intervened to calm the situation.

Speaking after the game, Juric described the incident as a normal part of football emotions and assured that it would be handled internally.

“It’s the usual thing we’ve been commenting on every Sunday. It happened with De Bruyne at Napoli — some players are not happy to be substituted, they don’t react well, and we sort these things out in the locker room,” Juric told Sky Sport Italia.

“We all know these situations; we’ve all had them as players and as coaches — they happen in the heat of the moment.

“What matters is Atalanta, the club, the team, and the fans. We do what is good for the team, and I think you need to give your all. I understand, I shake it all off, and we move forward.”

UCL: PSG begin title defence with emphatic 4-0 win over Atalanta

Holders Paris St-Germain made the perfect start to the defence of their Champions League title with an emphatic win against Atalanta.

Having become European champions for the first time with a 5-0 thumping of Inter Milan in May’s final, they dominated against another Serie A side at the Parc des Princes.

Captain Marquinhos opened the scoring in only the third minute, side-footing into the net following Fabian Ruiz’s low cross from the left.

PSG had plenty of chances, but Nuno Mendes shot just wide, teenager Senny Mayulu had an effort deflected over and Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi made excellent saves to deny Bradley Barcola and Achraf Haikimi.

But a second goal was always coming and the hosts doubled their advantage in style in the 39th minute thanks to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s solo goal that saw him run at the visiting defence before firing home from 18 yards.

PSG boss Luis Enrique was watching the first half from high up in the stands to get a better view tactically and his side should have made it 3-0 when they were awarded a penalty after Marquinhos was fouled by Yunus Musah.

However, with Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue both missing because of injury, Barcola took the spot-kick only to see his weak and central effort easily saved by Carnesecchi.

Nevertheless, PSG did get their third five minutes into the second half with Mendes firing past the Atalanta keeper at his near post from a tight angle.

The Italian side, managed by former Southampton boss Ivan Juric, rarely tested home goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier and conceded a fourth goal in added time when Raoul Bellanova’s poor backpass was intercepted by Goncalo Ramos with the substitute calmly finishing.

PSG’s next Champions League games see them visit Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen in October, before home matches against Bayern Munich and Tottenham in November.

Atalanta will be looking to beat Club Brugge at home in their next match in the competition on Tuesday, 30 September.

Lookman needs to give 100 percent for our jersey – Atalanta CEO

Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi has insisted that Ademola Lookman must show greater commitment if he is to feature for the club again.

The Nigeria international is yet to play for La Dea this season after pushing for a summer move to Inter Milan.

Despite turning out for the Super Eagles during the international break, the 28-year-old was left out of Atalanta’s squad for Sunday’s Serie A clash with Lecce.

Head coach Ivan Juric had already made his stance clear before the match, stating he would not “beg” Lookman to play.

Percassi echoed those sentiments, reiterating that the winger’s absence stems from the club’s non-negotiable values.

“I don’t have much to add to what the coach already said. Obviously, we are in total agreement with his comments,” Percassi told DAZN Italia.

“We know how important Lookman is for Atalanta, but the club has some very basic principles, which need players who are ready to give 100 per cent for this jersey and totally concentrated on our cause. Every game is difficult.

“So, the decision was made not to call up Ademola due to his situation, and we are focused on this tough game. The history of this club is a battling spirit, and the coach fully embodies that idea, which is why we chose him. This is what the fans expect too, regardless of the quality of the individual players.”

Lookman played a key role for Atalanta last season, including starring in their Europa League triumph but his future in Bergamo remains in serious doubt as tensions with the club continue.

Nigerian ace top rankings in Serie A

Serie A top side, Atalanta, have made a firm €70 million  (about  N123.7 Billion) asking price for  Super eagles striker Ademola Lookman amid latest  reported interest  from West Ham and Manchester United.

TEAMtalk revealed that West Ham United are among several clubs keeping an eye on the Atalanta winger, who has drawn interest from teams considering his return to the Premier League.

Elsewhere, CaughtOffside also reported that Manchester United are ready to compete with Real Madrid to sign the Atalanta winger in the summer.

But according to information from TuttoMercatoWeb, the Italian club are demanding €70 million for its forward and will not let him leave for less.

Italian journalist Paolo Paganini told TuttoMercatoWeb that Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint Germain, haven’t lost interest in Lookman despite not landing the player late in the summer transfer window.

“Lookman? I know that PSG’s summer interest has remained intact,” Paganini said. “He is on Paris Saint-Germain’s shopping list, but it remains to be seen if Atalanta can do without someone like Lookman in January.”

Yet  Lookman is least disturbed  by  many  transfer speculations with his continued  performances  in the Serie A and  UEFA Champions League as he  featured last night against Young Boys.

Yesterday, the 27-year-old forward  was named along with Fiorentina goalkeeper David De Gea rank as the best performing players in Serie A over the first 13 matches of the 2024-25 season.

Football Italia ranked  the top 10 Serie A players after Round 13, which ended with Lecce’s 1-0 win away against Venezia on Monday night.

The ranking is based on average player ratings from Italian sports papers for footballers who have made at least 50% of Serie A appearances this term.

Lookman has jumped up to the top of the standings after grabbing his seventh league goal in 10 outings during Atalanta’s 3-1 victory over Parma at the weekend.

De Gea is level with Lookman on average ratings after keeping another clean sheet in Fiorentina’s 2-0 win over 10-man Como. La Viola now have seven wins on the spin with the former Manchester United keeper between the sticks.

Another Atalanta forward in Mateo Retegui completes the top three. He was on the score sheet after just four minutes against Parma, and is still leading the division’s top scorer charts with 12 from 13 games.

Despite losing to Atalanta, former Real Madrid talent Nico Paz ranks highly among the best performing Serie A players.

Moise Kean and Nuno Tavares are level in fifth with the same rating, while Marcus Thuram, Mattia Zaccagni, Timothy Weah and Ardian Ismajli follow closely behind.

Awesome Lookman shines as Atalanta hit Verona for six

Atalanta rattled in five first-half goals in a rampant display to beat Hellas Verona 6-1 at the Gewiss Stadium, with Nigerian star Ademola Lookman helping himself to two goals and two assists.

It took Atalanta just six minutes to open the scoring here. Ademola Lookman’s cutback to the edge of the box was slid in by Marten de Roon, and La Dea built on that momentum to double their lead inside nine minutes after Mateo Retegui pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the box with a pinpoint side-footed finish.

The hosts were in a rampant mood, notching a third in the 14th minute through Charles De Ketelaere, who showed tricky footwork on the right flank before cutting inside and curling his effort into the far corner.

Verona came into the contest and sat in mid-table after a relatively positive start to the season, but Paolo Zanetti’s men were disastrous before the break as Atalanta added a fourth and fifth through Lookman.

Atalanta picks Lookman for UCL  duel with Shaktar Donetsk

Striker Ademola Lookman is  expected to be  in the thick of action tonight  when Atalanta  face off  away to  Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

The Nigeria international  who scored a remarkable  hat trick to  land Atalanta  their first   continental silverware in last season’s Europa League Final against  Bayer Leverkusen, is one of  the experienced  players in coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad  for the encounter.

Gasperini has taken six Atalanta academy graduates with him for this evening’s away match  as he will have to do without the injured Matteo Ruggeri  while Marco Brescianini dropped  out.

There is an academy representative in every position of Atalanta’s confirmed squad, as Goalkeeper Francesco Rossi, who has been on the club’s books since 2003, is named among the goalkeepers.

The five other academy graduates are still eligible to represent the U23 squad. Defenders Pietro Comi, Tommaso Del Lungo and Marco Palestra are included, as is 19-year-old midfielder Alberto Manzioni, plus centre-forward Vanja Vlahovic, who earned his senior debut as a substitute against Como last Tuesday.

Gasperini’s list of injuries still includes Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini, both out with cruciate ligament injuries, plus the aforementioned Ruggeri, who also misses out with a knee issue.

Brescianini has also not made the cut, but otherwise, all of Atalanta’s available senior players have been included.

  • Lookman’s coach targets Scudetto for Atalanta

Lookman’s coach targets Scudetto for Atalanta

Gian Piero Gasperini outlines how Atalanta demolished Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League and what they must do to become Scudetto challengers. ‘We can improve.’

Having spent his entire career without winning a single piece of silverware, the coach finally got to lift a trophy into the air in Dublin.

He did it in style, crushing the previously unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 with a hat-trick from Ademola Lookman.

“I knew we could’ve created problems for them, as I studied many Bayer Leverkusen games and they are not accustomed to being attacked the way we did. We had the right characteristics to make them play badly,” Gasperini told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

La Dea won by throwing everything at their opponents, starting all the available strikers, whereas Bayer Leverkusen fielded a False 9.

“My objective has always been to achieve results through good football. I have always been thoroughly convinced that if you play well, you have a better chance of winning.

“Many think the opposite, that beauty is an obstacle to the result, which I find absurd. I got many results at Crotone, Genoa, Atalanta. If you don’t get results, then nobody will recognise the quality of your football.”

Gasperini has also been using a three-man defence for most of his career, something that effectively got him fired at Inter.

“People didn’t really understand what I was doing then. In 2006 at Genoa, we were the only team with three at the back, now 80 per cent of teams in Europe play like that. I’ve never been as innovative as I was then.”

Now that Gasperini has taken Atalanta to the Europa League victory and qualified for the Champions League again, is it onwards and upwards towards a Scudetto challenge?

“We are 25 points off the top of the table, which is an abyss. The Scudetto is won with at least 90 points, we twice got 78 and this season if all goes well we’ll close on 72. That has been our target so far.

“Adding another 15 is not easy, even if we avoid a few more defeats. In order to make the step up in quality and win, you need to lose out economically. And Atalanta cannot afford to do that.

“We sell our players and if we sell a Teun Koopmeiners, it is not that easy to find another. By selling you do not reinforce, you rebuild. Teams that win the Scudetto add to the squad, they do not remove the strongest players.”

As part of the contract negotiations, has Gasperini asked Atalanta to change that?

“I am thinking of how to improve the team. We were fantastic, the best, but not the strongest this season. In terms of strength, we can improve.

“It all has to be compatible with the market and the offers that we receive, just like for Rasmus Hojlund.”

The Danish striker was a masterclass in Atalanta economics, purchased from Sturm Graz for €20m and then sold a year later to Manchester United for €84m including bonuses.

Would it be utopia or hope for Atalanta to keep Koopmeiners and Ederson this summer?

“I would like to call it hope. Atalanta already rejected big offers for Koop in January. Players are happy to come here, especially in the Champions League, but the salary cap that we quite rightly maintain can be an obstacle.”

Gasperini already confirmed he turned down an offer from England, as well as the Napoli approach, so did he really think about leaving Atalanta?

“I had sensed a little fatigue, the President seemed ready to let me go, so he said, but then the season took a glorious turn and he changed his words. We carry on like this.”

    What about a national job?

“I don’t think I have the right characteristics.”

    Free-scoring Lookman lifts ‘three-star’ Atalanta

Ace striker to battle Boniface, others for  Europa Award

Super Eagles’ star of the moment, Ademola Lookman  was yet among the  goals  as

Europa League champion Atalanta   inflicted a  3-0 defeat on Torino in the Serie A yesterday to perish  the hope of AS Roma to qualify for  next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Gianluca Scamacca and Ademola Lookman scored first-half goals for Atalanta and Mario Pasalic added a penalty after the break as the Bergamo side moved up to fourth place, one point ahead of Bologna.

Lookman was coming off a hat trick in Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final on Wednesday, and the Europa League trophy was on the sideline before kickoff.

Sixth-place Roma, which was playing at Empoli later, needed Atalanta to finish fifth to qualify for the Champions League.

It’s the final round of the Italian league but Atalanta still has a game to make up against Fiorentina next Sunday.

Meanwhile, Lookman and his compatriot, Victor Boniface  have both been shortlisted  for the Europa League Goal of the Tournament award.

Following the conclusion of the exciting tournament, the UEFA’s Technical Observer panel has picked the top ten most eye-catching goals scored in the 2023-2024 Europa League, with Boniface and Lookman making the cut for their efforts against Qarabag and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.

Bayer Leverkusen secured a convincing 5-1 win over Qarabag on matchday three in Group H, with Boniface scoring the third goal for the German champions.

Boniface increased the lead to 3-1 with a long-range effort into the top corner on 35 minutes.

Lookman became the first player to score a hat trick in a Europa League final as Atalanta thrashed Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to win their first-ever European title, and his second goal is up for the award.

In their bid to win the award, Boniface and Lookman face competition from Marseille’s Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who has been double nominated and West Ham United’s Ghana sensation Mohamed Kudus.

Other nominees are João Pedro (Brighton), Darwin Núñez (Liverpool), David Douděra (Slavia Prague), Rafael Leão (AC Milan) and Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen).

Lookman was named Player of the Week for his incredible performance against Bayer Leverkusen, topping the poll ahead of Éderson, Piero Hincapie and Davide Zappacosta.

The Atalanta number 11 has been named in the Europa League Team of the Season after netting five goals in eleven matches.
