    Charles Yayouck loses CAS suit against Dalung

    The Court of Arbitration for Sports CAS has thrown out an Appeals suit filed by North West Zone aspirant to the board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria Charles Musa Yayock against the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Barrister Solomon Dalung, declaring Mr Ibrahim Gusau President-elect of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

    Yayock had gone to CAS to contest his loss into the AFN board in the Ministry of Youth and Sports organized National Sports Federations elections in May this year.

    In his ruling dated September 14, 2017, the President of the CAS Appeals Arbitration Division Corine Schmidhauser stated that the suit with registration number CAS 2017/A/5293 between Charles Musa Yayock and the Minister of Youth and Sports Development had been terminated and removed from the CAS roll.

    According to the CAS President, in the absence of any agreement from the Respondent to continue the present procedure and considering that no proof of timely filing of the appeal brief was submitted by the appellant, Yayock’s request for reconsideration was rejected as it was deemed withdrawn in accordance with article R51 of the Code

    Yayock filed a statement of appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the Minister of Youth and Sports in respect of the Electoral Committee’s announcement on June 13, 2017 at the main bowl of the National Stadium Abuja declaring Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau President elect of the AFN.

    CAS invited the appellant to complete his statement in accordance with article R 51 of the Code of Sports- related Arbitration within a deadline of two days which he failed to provide proof of timely filing of his appeal brief .

    Consequently, his  appeal was deemed withdrawn.

    This puts to rest the controversy on the election of the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria Ibrahim Shehu Gusau’s who emerged from the North west zone.

    National Youth Games: George,others storm Ilorin

    • Athletics event starts September 11
    Honourable Olamide George will be at the head of Athletics Federation of Nigeria officials expected in Ilorin for the 2017 National Youth Games which begin this week.
    George,who is the vice president of the federation will be joined by Brown Ebewele,a foremost athletics coach who is expected to be named the AFN technical sub-committee chairman following his election as the representative of the technical arm of the federation as well as three-time Olympic coach,Gabriel Okon.
    Also expected to be in Ilorin for the games are Sunday Adeleye,the athletes representative elected on June 13 to purposely take care of the interest of track and field athletes and Amaechi Akawo,the administrative head of the federation.
    The Sports Writers of Nigeria (SWAN) representative on the board of the AFN,Dare Esan is also expected to hit Ilorin later this week.
    In a chat with newsmen in Lagos,Esan revealed that the AFN will organise the athletics event of the games which runs from September 11 through 16 at the Maracana stadium,University of Ilorin.
    ‘As a journalist and somebody who has been associated with track and field for over 20 years and has covered the IAAF World Championships eight times,I am delighted the 2017 edition is a reality.This is truly a talent discovery event and kudos must be given to the Honourable Minister,Barrister Solomon Dalung for giving Nigerian youths an event aimed at developing their talent and fostering unity amongst them,’he said.

    D.K Olukoya Athletics Championships to Hold in Port Harcourt

     

    The 7th edition of D.k Olukoya Athletics Championships has been slated for April 7 at the High-Performance Center, Port Harcourt.

    In a statement signed by Olukayode Thomas, head of Media and Communication, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), athletes from participating states and clubs are expected to arrive on Friday, April 7 for screening at the competition venue.

    According to Thomas, only athletes that pass the screening exercise will be allowed to take part in this year’s championships as the AFN is keen to maintain set standards in not allowing over-aged athletes compete in its age grade competitions.

    “Yes, we are ready for this year’s D.K Olukoya Championships which will be taking place in Port Harcourt. We have again put in place adequate measures to ensure that only athletes that fall between the age bracket can compete,” he said.

    A keen contest is expected in Port Harcourt as this edition of the championship will be used to select athletes that will represent Nigeria at the Africa Junior Championships that will be holding in Algeria 29 June to July 2nd 2017.

    It is understood that the AFN will also be using this year’s D.k Olukoya Championships to aid its selection of athletes to represent the country at the World Youth Championships and Commonwealth Youth Games taking place respectively in Kenya and the Bahamas later this year.

    With so much at stake at this year’s championships many are keen to see the next generation of athletes that are hopefully going to evolve into world beaters in no distant time.

    AFN’s Technical Director retires from Nigerian Navy

    omatseyeThe Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) Technical Director, Omatseye Nesiama, has retired from the Nigerian Navy after more than 32 years in service.

    Nesiama, who retired as a Commodore, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos that he was grateful to God to have served the nation.

    “I now have my free time since God has given me the privilege of retiring with strength and health.

    “I am grateful to God for keeping me alive to this day, I am free and happier. I am proud to have served my country,’’ he said.

    Nesiama, 54, said his target now was to open a security and sports consulting firm, adding that he would also engage more in his religious obligations.

    “The retirement opens me up to other greater opportunities and areas of my passion for security and sports.

    “I am starting my business as a Private Security and Sports Consultant. I am also going to attend to my religious obligations of teaching in the church,’’ he said.

    On his retirement and position as the AFN Technical Director, he said: “It won’t affect my position which is until the end of the board’s tenure in April,’’.

    The Ughelli indigene, who joined the Navy in June 1984, said one major thing he would also remember was the force regimentation.

    “I will miss nothing more than the regimentation which I will maintain to some reasonable extent to help me achieve my goals,’’ he said.

    NAN reports that Nesiama became AFN’s Technical Director in 2012, succeeding Sunday Bada who died in December 2011.

    He is a member of the Technical Committee, Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).

    He was in charge of the Security department of the maiden Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in 2016.

    Nesiama is married to Roli and they are blessed with two children.
