Atiku, Wike: the jousting continues ad nauseam

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential race is a story of what might have been. Does he regret how he ran the race? Does he know a different outcome was actually within his reach, had he been less presumptuous? Or was he just plain incompetent in political strategy? There is nothing in the former vice president’s public statements, now or in the past 20 months or so, that gives any indication he was remorseful about the tactics he used in the race. If he suffered pangs of remorse privately, he has been clever and successful in masking it. If he didn’t feel any remorse, then he must be more stoical than many people give him credit. But any normal and clever politician in Alhaji Atiku’s worn shoes would have pined away in regret for frittering away what was undoubtedly his best chance to clinch the race.

Last week’s verbal jousting with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike indicates that the former vice president actually remains sanguine about his monumental electoral loss. He may never get the chance again, whether to run for the top office or win. In 2023, all he needed to do was indulge in the realpolitik that had hallmarked his decades-long political career. He was not the most perceptive and principled of leaders, but nature at least afforded him chances upon chances in two or three dizzying months in mid-2022 to win the diadem he had coveted all his life. Uncharacteristically, for someone so placid about political morality and so unfeeling about other people’s opinions, he flung it out of the window and failed to seize the moment. Last week, in their verbal jousting, both men showed who was to blame and what that critical factor that would have produced a different outcome was.

Alhaji Atiku drew the first blood in a television interview where he insisted that Mr Wike’s character disqualified him from being picked as running mate. He was not only the second pick by a committee the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) set up to do the sieving, the former vice president said dismissively, his role in the Rivers State crisis and his giddy display at the FCT made the former Rivers State governor a misfit for the onerous responsibility of deputizing for the president. Now, of all the criticisms anyone might level at Mr Wike, assaulting his character is the most intolerable. He believes he is a political purist, and more, he believes his judgement is generally infallible, moored, he thinks, on the most indubitable ethos any system could forge. For instance, in his diatribe against Rivers governor Siminalayi Fubara, the issue of character failure of his successor remains the recurring theme. To, therefore, be accused of character failure was a gauntlet he would never fail to take up.

The former vice president had obviously forgotten his facts or mixed up his story, thundered Mr Wike through his spokesman. The PDP committee in question, roared Mr Wike, actually had the FCT minister as the number one pick, with 13 votes, and former Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the number two pick with only two votes. The former vice president, he said, mixed up his facts or lied sacrilegiously in the time of Ramaddan. Incidentally, PDP spokesmen later shamefacedly admitted that Mr Wike was first pick. And as for impugning his character as governor, former governor, and now FCT minister, the former vice president, he said, simply evaded the truth, avoided blame for his 2023 humiliation, and pursued red herrings. Mr Wike said he had since moved on beyond the 2022 mishap, advising Alhaji Atiku to do the same.

Unfortunately for the former vice president, Mr Wike, despite his own private failings, many of which are obvious, was right in his summation of why the PDP lost the presidential election. It was tactical folly for the PDP presidential candidate to have imagined that picking Dr Okowa would enable him to run with the hare and hunt with the hound. He had thought that the Ifeanyi in Dr Okowa’s name would help him appeal to both the Igbo and South-South votes. At another time and perhaps era, theoretically, he would be right. But not when a certain Peter Obi was also in the race on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), and certainly not when the Southeast’s herd mentality could not be immediately discounted or mitigated by any known factor. What is even more flummoxing is that everyone, save the former vice president, knew that the ideologically superficial Mr Obi was nevertheless sensible enough to know that all he needed to do in the race was lock the Southeast down and make a dangerous, if fatal, pitch for the Christian vote. The LP candidate was in fact coherent and largely successful in both efforts. It clearly sounded the death knell to a presidential ambition to ignore the damage Mr Obi was capable of doing, and to pick an intelligent but largely uncharismatic running mate with no strategic appeal.

If Alhaji Atiku had picked Mr Wike, as the more politically savvy PDP committee suggested, he would have saved the party from fracturing, thus defanging the nuisance value of the Group of Five (G-5), kept the usually conservative South-South in the bag, set the cat among the Southeast pigeons who would doubt their insular champion, and convinced enough Middle Belt and core North voters to put all their eggs in one basket as he parochially preached. He had the clearest and most enticing pathway to the presidency in the 2023 poll. But instead, he was sure, without any basis, that his main opponent, the then candidate Tinubu, would falter. He then reinforced the farce by reposing confidence in the promises of many presidential insiders of the day, leading him to defy the threats of the G-5 and Mr Wike. No one so more willingly committed political suicide.

Alhaji Atiku may be unprincipled, but he is not stupid. He probably knows that he made a big mistake in 2023. He also probably suspects that the last presidential election was his best and last chance to run for the coveted office. But he needs a sacrificial lamb to convince the world that too many ‘traitors’ doomed his electoral chances, and also needs any ointment wherever he can find it to salve his wounded conscience. He has never wished to be a statesman, and would, therefore, be loth to admit his error nobly and bravely. He will, therefore, continue to joust with Mr Wike, abuse him at every turn, and nitpick his faults. Redirecting the attention to the FCT minister will, however, not mitigate his failure to make hay while the sun shone in 2023. Whereas hope may be rising for Mr Obi at the LP as the Supreme Court has weighed in against the intransigent party chairman, Julius Abure, in the PDP, and in the foreseeable future, the pall is unlikely to lift anytime soon, regardless of how mendacious the former vice president can be.

Group recommends legal action against Atiku over comments on Akpabio

A group, Niger Delta Conscience Coalition (NDCC), is seeking legal action against former Vice president Atiku Abubakar for accusing the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio of corruption and abuse of women.

In a statement on Tuesday by the President, Aniefiok Fabian and secretary, John Adangu Dagogo, the NDCC urged Akpabio to consider legal actions against Atiku, describing the former VP’s comments as defamatory and inexcusable.

The statement reads in parts: “Niger Delta Conscience Coalition is deeply alarmed by the reckless descent of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar into baseless defamation against the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

‘It is regrettable that Atiku, out of sheer political frustration, has resorted to making cheap, wild and unfounded allegations against the President of the Senate, accusing him of corruption and abuse of women during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.

“His unfounded claims that Senator Akpabio is corrupt and abused women during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State are nothing but a shameless smear campaign, lacking a shred of evidence, specificity, or substance. Atiku’s tirade is a disgraceful attempt to railroad lies into public consciousness, all in service of his selfish perennial political agenda”.

The group said that Atiku does not possess the moral credentials to accuse Akpabio or anyone of corruption having himself being enmeshed in series of corruption cases while serving as vice president.

“Alhaji Atiku Abubakar does not possess the moral credentials to criticize or condemn Senator Godswill Akpabio over alleged corruption and abuse of women, especially when these wild allegations, like so many we have seen in recent times, have no shred of proof, worst still coming from a man who is “haunted by corruption demons”, to borrow the words of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the diminutive former Governor of Kaduna State.

“Atiku, a former customs officer turned vice president, presided over the scandalous sale of a $3.2 billion national asset for a measly $250 million, a “mistake” he himself admitted, only to emerge inexplicably wealthy, bankrolling every of his never-ending presidential bid since 1999 with such financial muscle that is surprising of a custom staff.

“His own boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, exposed him in My Watch (Volume 2, pages 31-32), branding him as a man of “propensity to corruption,” “disloyalty,” “poor judgment,” and a “readiness to sacrifice morality, integrity, propriety, truth, and national interest” for personal gain.

“Given such a scathing indictment from someone who worked closely with him for eight unbroken years, Atiku Abubakar is the last person who should be pontificating on issues of corruption or even morality let alone making baseless allegations against anyone for that matter. His attempt to lecture Nigerians on integrity is not only laughable but also an insult to the collective memory of the nation.

“NDCC sees through the charade and notes the growing desperation of Atiku Abubakar and his cohorts, who have been orchestrating baseless allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President in a bid to destabilize the Senate leadership.

“Their tactics are now clear and the masks are off, and the real players behind this smear campaign are finally showing their shameless faces. It has always been about 2027 politics, and their willingness to destroy institutions and malign individuals for political gain is both reckless and shameful.

“But their schemes, as usual, will fail. Senator Akpabio and the Senate leadership should remain steadfast and focused on supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through robust legislation and oversight to deliver prosperity to Nigerians.

“It is also curious that Atiku Abubakar’s misplaced and selective outrage on the unanimous approval by the National Assembly of Mr. President’s decision on the Rivers State political crisis is directed solely at the Senate President.

‘He claims to oppose the National Assembly’s unanimous support for the President’s decisions on Rivers State, backed by members of his own party in the Assembly, yet directs his miguided venom solely at the Senate President!

‘Why is it always Senator Akpabio who is the target of these puerile and unwarranted attacks? Is it a mere coincidence, or is there an orchestrated scheme to vilify and undermine him for sinister reasons?  Nigerians should take note”, the statement added.

The group advised Atiku to save his energy and resources for another episode of his serial presidential aspiration in 2027, rather than engaging in baseless character assassination.

The statement further reads: “The Senate President is encouraged to consider legal options against Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and remain committed to his role and not be distracted or deterred by gimmicks.

‘If anything, the Senate President should further dedicate himself to ensuring that his leadership of the Senate, for which he has suffered several needless attacks on his person, will, in collaboration with President Tinubu, coincide with the turnaround in the well-being and prosperity of Nigeria and all Nigerians”.

Atiku’s attack on Akpabio a 2027 agenda against Tinubu, says group

The Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Professionals (IK-PRO) has condemned former Vice president Atiku Abubakar for accusing the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio of corruption and abuse of women.

In a statement on Tuesday by the national President, Mr.Edidiong John and National Secretary, Mr.Kemfon Neke, the group said that Atiku’s accusations have political undertone.

According to the IK-PRO, the former Vice president was executing a larger political agenda to discredit the Senate President and the President Bola Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 election.

It said that Atiku’s defamatory comments against Akpabio lack proofs and expressive of his political frustrations following his serial presidential election losses.

The statement reads in parts: “Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in his recent remarks, baselessly accused the Senate President of corruption and alleged that he had a history of abusing women during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.

“However, he failed to provide any specific details or reference any pending corruption charges against Senator Akpabio. Likewise, he did not cite any verifiable incidents of abuse to support his outrageous claims. Instead, he resorted to reckless falsehoods, seemingly in a desperate bid to tarnish the Senate President’s reputation ahead of the 2027 elections.

“It is ironic that such accusations emanate from a man whose own past is riddled with serious credibility concerns. The former customs officer turned politician, who amassed enormous wealth, enabling him to contest every presidential election since the advent of the Fourth Republic, has a questionable record.

“More damningly, his former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, detailed his moral and ethical shortcomings in his book, My Watch, Volume 2 (pages 31-32).

“Obasanjo described Atiku Abubakar as having “a propensity to corruption,” “a tendency to disloyalty,” “an inability to say and stick to the truth all the time,” “a propensity for poor judgment,” “a belief and reliance on Marabouts,” “a lack of transparency” among others”.

Further the statement said: “Given such an unflattering verdict from one who had the closest view of Atiku Abubakar’s tenure, it is preposterous for him to pontificate about corruption in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world. His moral authority on the subject is nonexistent.

“Furthermore, the former Vice President’s recent diatribe has unmasked the forces behind the baseless allegations aimed at destabilizing the Senate and its leadership.

“The coordinated attacks, including false accusations of sexual harassment, have always been politically motivated and are now fully exposed as part of a larger agenda for 2027. It is unfortunate that some politicians are willing to go to any lengths, including fabrications and character assassination, to advance their ambitions.

“Despite these attempts at distraction, the Senate under Senator Akpabio remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the enactment of quality legislation and robust oversight. The focus remains on advancing national development and delivering prosperity to Nigerians.

“IK-PRO also notes with concern Atiku Abubakar’s selective outrage over the National Assembly’s unanimous decision on the Rivers State issue. The decision, which received overwhelming support from lawmakers across party lines in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, is now being singularly blamed on Senator Akpabio.

“Curiously, the former Vice President has not directed similar criticism toward the Speaker of the House of Representatives, a fellow northerner, who also presided over the unanimous resolution. This selective targeting of Senator Akpabio, a southern leader, is both suspicious and troubling.

‘IK-PRO calls on Nigerians to recognize the consistent pattern of attacks aimed at destabilizing the leadership of prominent southern politicians. It is no coincidence that figures like Atiku Abubakar frequently engage in these calculated efforts to disrupt governance when competent southern leaders are at the helm.

‘We urge the former Vice President to reserve his political maneuvers for the 2027 elections and allow the Senate President to focus on the crucial legislative duties necessary to support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. Nigeria needs statesmanship, not baseless mudslinging and political mischief”.

Too late for Atiku to buy character, integrity – Wike

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been told that it was already too late for him to buy character and integrity.

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike said no one could have knew him better than President Olusegun Obasanjo,  under whom he served as Vice President for eight years.

Wike, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Lere Olayinka on Public Communications and Social Media, on Sunday was reacting to statement by the Atiku Media Office that character was the reason the decision of the committee set up by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) selected its Vice Presidential candidate for the 2023 election was rejected.

He said one Nigerian that can never be found in the gathering of men of character and integrity is Atiku, stating Obasanjo attested to this in his book; My Watch.

Olayinka said; “One of the reasons Wike first rejected Atiku’s offer to have him as his running mate was his not too impressive character and integrity rating, until he was prevailed upon. And this, Atiku exhibited when he rejected the decision of committee the party set up to pick his running mate even after telling everyone that the decision of the committee will be bidding on him.

“Now, after his lies that he picked his running mate based on the committee report that placed the former Governor of Delta State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, as number one was bursted, he is now sermonising about character and integrity,  which he, himself does not have.

“Funny that the same Atiku, that his boss described as a ‘blatant and shameless liar,’ is the one talking about character.

“For the records, Obasanjo said in his book, ‘My Watch’ that ‘What I did not know, which came out glaringly later, was his parental background which was somewhat shadowy, his propensity to corruption, his tendency to disloyalty, his inability to say and stick to the truth all the time, a propensity for poor judgement, his belief and reliance on marabouts, his lack of transparency, his trust in money to buy his way out on all issues and his readiness to sacrifice morality, integrity, propriety, truth and national interest for self and selfish interest.’

“Up till today,  Atiku has not debunked what his boss said about him.

“Unlike Atiku,  Wike does not hide or pretend on where he stands on issues. He is not one that will do a tweet on major issues and rush to delete it. He didn’t pretend about his position on the 2023 election and he won’t pretend on where he will stand in 2027.

“It is Atiku, that should start being truthful and reliable, especially now that he is old, because everything should not be about desperation to be President”.

    • FCT Minister accuses ex-VP of lying during Ramadan
    • You’ve zero character, Atiku tells Wike

The running verbal exchange between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike over the former’s choice of a running mate as PDP candidate in the 2023 presidential election continued yesterday.

The two chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party had fallen apart after the presidential primaries of the PDP in the build-up to the 2023 elections, following which Atiku chose former Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate ahead of Wike, the then governor of Rivers State, who came second to Atiku at the primaries.

Atiku had explained his choice of Okowa at the time, saying that he opted for the former Delta State governor not only because he was someone he could work with but also because he had the potential to become president.

In a recent interview, however, Atiku gave a different reason for choosing Okowa as running mate, saying that his choice was based on the recommendation of the committee set up by the party for that purpose.

Wike, however, described Atiku’s latest claim as false, accusing the former vice president of lying during the holy month of Ramadan.

The FCT Minister, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said it was unfortunate that Atiku could not respect the holy month of Ramadan and avoid telling lies, wondering how a committee would present a candidate with two votes as first choice ahead of one who had 13 votes.

“Wike never put himself forward to be Atiku’s running mate then. Atiku did by himself, and he (Wike) accepted his offer with conditions,” Olayinka said.

He said it was a fact that in the committee report, Wike had 13 votes while Okowa had two.

“The committee set up by the PDP picked Wike as Atiku’s running mate. But for reasons best known to him, he settled for Okowa who had two votes from the committee members.

“That’s the truth Atiku should tell and stand with; not trying to colour his decision with falsehood,” he said.

Olayinka, who noted that for devout Muslims the period of Ramadan is that of holiness, said: “Al-Bukhaari (1903, 6057) quoted Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as saying that Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said: ‘Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, and ignorance, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) has no need of him giving up his food and drink.’

“Unfortunately, Atiku chose to tell lies so brazenly during the holy month of Ramadan, obviously forgetting that Allah (SWT) does not hearken to the prayers of liars, probably the reason he (Atiku) has continually failed in his desperation to be president of Nigeria.”

While advising Atiku to always be honest to stand by his decisions, Olayinka said the FCT Minister was no longer interested in what happened or what did not happen concerning the 2023 presidential election.

“Like I said earlier, Wike has no regrets for Atiku not picking him as his running mate, and he also has no regrets taking the position he took concerning the presidential election,” he said.

Atiku: Learning without character is equal to zero

Responding to Wike in a statement yesterday, the Atiku Media Office accused the Wike camp of trying to rewrite history, saying its attention had been drawn to yet another emotional outburst disguised as a press statement from the FCT Minister’s camp.

It said: “While we understand that bitterness often finds expression in misplaced aggression, we must remind Mr. Wike and his team that a bitter heart isn’t capable of charity, nor does it inspire unity, healing, or truth.

“Once again, facts have been twisted in a desperate attempt to rewrite history. Mr. Wike, through his spokesperson, claims that he had 13 votes from a committee set up to recommend a vice presidential running mate, while Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa had only two.

“Let us be clear: there are no laid down rules or laws on the selection process of a running mate. Committees, consultations and recommendations are advisory in nature. The final decision rests solely and exclusively with the presidential candidate, in this case, Atiku Abubakar.

“It is a constitutional and strategic choice, not a popularity contest.

“Assuming, but not conceding that Wike had 13 votes and Okowa had 2 — just like universities confer degrees “in learning and in character” — one must ask: what is the worth of votes if character scores a zero?

“Leadership is not only about numbers; it is about temperament, dignity, and the ability to unify.

“A man may boast of numbers, but if his conduct lacks grace and humility, those numbers are empty.

“We make no apologies for choosing Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa as the running mate in 2023. That decision was based on a combination of intellect, composure and statesmanship.

“We have been vindicated by Mr. Wike’s public conduct in Rivers State where he once served as governor and in Abuja since becoming FCT Minister, which has made it abundantly clear why he was unsuitable for the role of Vice President in a ticket meant to unify, not divide.

“We urge Mr. Wike and his social media spokesperson to resist the temptation to sermonise about religious piety during Ramadan and Lent, too, while simultaneously fanning the flames of discord.

“Let us not reduce sacred periods to a tool for petty political jabs.

“The task of rebuilding our party and our nation is a serious one. It is time to move beyond bruised egos and focus on what truly matters: the future of Nigeria and the wellbeing of its people!”

Atiku can’t be trusted – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike on Sunday said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar cannot be trusted politically.

Wike, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, insisted that Atiku Abubakar, lied by claiming he picked former Delta Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate in the 2023 presidential election based on report of the committee set up by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to select its Vice Presidential candidate.

Olayinka, who reiterated that the FCT Minister was never keen about being Atiku’s running mate because of the enormous baggages he is carrying, described the statement by the media office of the two-time PDP presidential candidate as face-saving and “an attempt to use further lies to defend Atiku’s previous lies.”

In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, Olayinka said: “Report of the committee was released so as to set the records straight, and this has made Atiku and his men to confess that in selecting his running mate, he (Atiku) did not follow the report of the committee set up by the PDP. He simply picked who he wanted, not who the party wanted.

“By saying that ‘there were no laid down rules or laws on the selection process of a running mate. Committees, consultations, and recommendations are advisory in nature. The final decision rests solely and exclusively with the presidential candidate, in this case, Atiku Abubakar. It is a constitutional and strategic choice, not a popularity contest,’ Atiku’s Media Office has confirmed that their principal actually lied and never had any regard for the PDP as a party.

“It therefore gladdens our hearts that we have been able to establish that Atiku lied and he is not a man to be trusted. That he chose to lie during the Holy Month of Ramadan is however between him and Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala).

“As for his choice of running mate in 2019 and 2023, it is our position that Atiku, as the PDP candidate had the right to make whatever choice, and he should be able to defend his choice and be honest for once to accept the consequences, not trying to misrepresent facts to justify the choice he made.

“It is also to be reiterated that just as Atiku, the loser in the election, has said he has no regret over the choice he made, Wike too has no regret over his choice.

“Therefore, no one is harboring any personal ill-feeling against Atiku for failing with the choice he made, and no one should also harbour ill-feeling against Wike for succeeding with the choice he made.

“Also, as for us, no ego is bruised, no bitterness too. Just a clear case of we making our choice and you making your own choice. But more than two years later, you are now trying to defend your own choice of failure with lies.

“On the PDP and the task of rebuilding it, it is necessary for Atiku to first come clear as to which party he belongs now, because PDP has not formed a coalition with any political party. Most importantly, his penchant for seeking to contest the presidential election under any available party has remained PDP’s major albatross”.

Wike knocks Atiku over choice of running mate in 2023

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has denied claim by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, that the committee set up by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to select its Vice Presidential candidate in the 2023 election rated former Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as its first choice.

Wike, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said it was unfortunate that Atiku, could not respect the Holy Month of Ramadan and avoid telling lies.

He asked how a committee will present the person who had two votes as first choice as against the person who had 13 votes.

Atiku had said; “So in 2023, I told the party to set up a committee to recommend three names. The committee ranked Okowa as the top choice, with Wike in second place and former Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel in third. So I picked number one”.

Reacting, the FCT Minister’s spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday that it became necessary to put the records straight and debunk Atiku’s lies, insisting that “Wike never put himself forward to be Atiku’s running mate then, Atiku did by himself, and he (Wike) accepted his offer with conditions.”

Olayinka said it was a fact that in the committee report,  Wike had 13 votes while Okowa had two.

Your 2027 presidential bid will fail, Wike’s aide knocks Atiku

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) Public Communications and Social Media to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that his principal will work against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition in 2027.

Wike’s aide said this while reacting to Atiku’s recent comments that he had no regrets for not choosing Wike as his running mate in the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the last election, had revealed that a committee recommended three potential running mates—former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Wike, and ex-Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel. Okowa was eventually picked.

Responding via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Olayinka dismissed Atiku’s remarks, stating that Wike had no regrets either about not being selected.

He further claimed that Wike contributed to Atiku’s loss in 2023 and would work to ensure another defeat in 2027.

“Two years after making the @OfficialPDPNig lose a presidential election it could have won, @atiku is giving reasons he did not pick @GovWike as his running mate and that he has no regrets.

“Someone should tell our serial presidential election contestant that Wike also has no regret for ensuring that he failed in the election and will make sure that he fails again and again,” Olayinka wrote.

Atiku announced the formation of a coalition of opposition leaders to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

The move has sparked speculation over who will lead the alliance, with notable figures like former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai rumoured to be key players.

When asked about his plans to contest in 2027, Atiku remained cautious, stating that a strong political platform must first be established.

“I don’t know because there has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy,” he said.

However, Atiku did not rule out another presidential bid, emphasising Nigeria’s need for experienced leadership.

He likened the situation to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014, where opposition forces united, contested, and eventually backed a single candidate to secure victory.

“We had a similar merger in 2014. About four of us, or is it three? We all ran for president, and one of us emerged. We all supported the one who emerged, and he won,” Atiku said.

…lambasts politicians over past failures, empty promises

The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) on Sunday criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing them of seeking political relevance by misleading Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group condemned what it described as the duo’s hypocrisy and deception, highlighting their past governance failures and their role in Nigeria’s ongoing economic and security challenges.

In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. AbdulRazak Ahmed, DWI reminded Nigerians that both Atiku and El-Rufai were key players in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party they now openly criticize.

The organization called for a new era of leadership that prioritizes democracy, accountability, and the well-being of Nigerians over personal political ambition.

Ahmed said: “This legacy raises critical questions about their current coalitions and genuine commitment to reform. The assertion that Atiku and El-Rufai are “all over the place attempting to deceive the people that they are saviors” underscores a critical perspective on their political maneuvers.

“This movement has given rise to a growing skepticism among the electorate regarding the authenticity of their claims and intentions. As these figures seek to position themselves as solutions to pressing societal issues, it raises questions about their past actions and the credibility of their promises.

“The history of these politicians is one marred by contradictions and a lack of accountability. All of them were integral to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party that has been in power for several years.

“Their current criticisms of the APC, which they helped establish, raise questions about their sincerity and the motivations behind their sudden shift in allegiance. It is essential for Nigerians to remember that these politicians were not merely bystanders in the political process; they were key players who benefited from the very systems they now denounce.

“DWI notes also that Nigeria has witnessed a plethora of challenges, including economic instability, widespread corruption, and inadequate infrastructure. Despite the opportunities presented by their long tenures in government, these politicians have little to show for their years of service.

“The citizens have endured the consequences of their decisions, particularly regarding the subsidy regime. They benefited from subsidies during their time in power, only to later advocate for their removal, leading to increased hardship for ordinary Nigerians.

“The removal of subsidies was implemented under the guise of economic reform, yet it disproportionately impacted the most vulnerable segments of society, exacerbating poverty and suffering.

The group also blasted Atiku and El-Rufai for their silence during Nigeria’s worst security crises, including the rise of insurgency and banditry that has ravaged communities across the country.

He added: “While the nation has grappled with the devastating impacts of insurgency and banditry, Atiku and his allies have remained conspicuously silent, folding their arms as communities were ravaged and lives were lost. This hypocrisy is not merely a political misstep; it is a betrayal of the trust bestowed upon them by the electorate.

“As Atiku prepares to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 election cycle, he has assembled a coalition of disgruntled and irrelevant political figures, individuals who have long overstayed their welcome in a political landscape yearning for genuine leadership.

“This coalition, which includes a parade of political has-beens such as the former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, serves as a glaring testament to the lack of credible vision for Nigeria’s future.

“Their gathering was less a strategic alliance and more a shameful display of political theater, revealing their desperation to regain relevance amid a populace that has grown weary of empty promises and failed governance.”

The organization urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and reject the attempts of these politicians to rebrand themselves as champions of democracy.

Ganduje tackles Atiku over coalition against APC

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje yesterday denounced  former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s admission that the ongoing realignment by opposition political leaders was to dislodge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office.

Ganduje boasted that no coalition by politicians who presently have ‘’no identifiable political base would stop the re-election of the President in 2027.

He predicated his belief in the President’s re-election on the fact that the opposition movement comprises people that can’t reach a consensus on any issue because of their different political ideologies and selfish interests.

Atiku, at a news conference in Abuja by Concerned Leaders and Political Stakeholders in Nigeria, said the opposition leaders were teaming up to recreate the then opposition’s move that resulted in PDP’s defeat in 2015.

The collaboration of the  Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN), Congress of Progressives Change(CPC), New Peoples Democratic Party (NewPDP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) in 2013/2014  gave birth to the  APC.

At the news conference addressed by Atiku were former Kaduna State  Governor  Nasir El-Rufai, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, APC former National Working Committee (NWC) member,  Salihu  Lukman and former APC National Chairmanship aspirant, Soni Monidafe.

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party(LP)  for the 2023 general poll   Peter Obi was represented by Tanko Yinusa.

Others like former   Ekiti State Governor  Kayode Fayemi and former   Transportation Minister   Rotimi Amaechi who are members of the coalition were said to have taken permission to be absent from the event.

But Ganduje in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Enlightenment  Oliver Okpala, said the re-election of President Tinubu in 2027 was assured.

The statement reads: “Dr Ganduje does not have any fear of the re-election of President Tinubu in 2027. Tinubu will surely emerge victorious because of his untrammelled performance since he assumed office as President of Nigeria.

“Forget the recent political gatherings and rantings from some politicians who presently do not have any identifiable political base.

“Their gathering from the Labour Party, PDP,  Social Democratic Party(SDP) and others are people with different political ideologies and selfish political interests that can never agree on any issue politically.

“The gathering is an assemblage of people with divergent political interests. No amount of political arrangement or gang up can stop the good people of Nigeria from re-electing Tinubu as President in 2027.”

Also yesterday, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development  Yusuf Abdullahi Ata   described the gathering by the coalition members   as a  “political gambit dead on arrival.”

He said in a statement by his media aide, Seyi Olorunsola, that Atiku, Obi and El-Rufai, who he called “three elusive political wanderers”  must understand that the country has moved past the era of “trial-and-error.

He advised the trio to wake up from their political slumber as Nigerians have already found competent leadership in  Tinubu.

The minister argued that the Atiku, Obi and El-Rufai alliance lacks credibility and would not gain traction among Nigerians.

He described Atiku as a “serial contester” who has repeatedly faced rejection at the polls despite his many attempts to clinch the Presidency.

Similarly, he labelled   El-Rufai as a “desperate power seeker” who lost credibility due to his self-serving political manoeuvres.

Also, Ata accused Obi of fostering ethnic and religious divisions by blackmailing competent and visionary leaders like Tinubu.

At the Abuja news conference, the  Coalition said the emergency rule in  Rivers State was unconstitutional. The group therefore demanded its immediate reversal.

It said: “This action is not only unlawful but also a clear subversion of democracy and imposition of autocratic federal control over a duly elected state government.

‘’We strongly condemn this development and call on all Nigerians of good conscience to resist this brazen assault on the Constitution of our country and institutions of our democracy.

“Mr. President’s illegal and unconstitutional proclamation was presumably driven by the protracted insidious political crisis in Rivers State, which culminated in the recent ruling of the Supreme Court.

‘’Naturally, we expected all parties to the dispute to follow laid-down procedures, and in good faith, to promptly implement the judgment of the highest court of the land.

“We note that despite provocative statements and the belligerent attitude of his opponents, Governor Siminalayi  Fubara demonstrated goodwill and appeared disposed to the implementation of the judgment of the Supreme Court.

“However, rather than rise above the fray, the President yielded to petty favouritism and betrayed the oath that he solemnly swore to before God and man, which was to ‘do right to all manner of people, according to law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will.’

‘’If President Tinubu had conveniently disguised his true intentions in the past, his broadcast to the nation on March 18, 2025, betrayed his bias and fell far below the standard of comportment expected from his exalted office.”

It  called on the President to   reinstate  Fubara, his deputy Ngozi  Odu and  the  state  House of Assembly

The group also urged the judiciary to act swiftly in striking down the President’s proclamation because it sets a precedent that could be used to arbitrarily remove any governor in the future.
