Atiku hosts business tycoon Omoha Nduka in Abuja

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday hosted a notable Nigerian entrepreneur and investor, Prince Omoha Nduka, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of Prince Luxury Group (PLG) at his Asokoro residence in Abuja.

The meeting between the Turakin Adamawa and the celebrated entrepreneur, according to sources, was strictly business in nature  without any political undertone.

Although the businessman elected to be mum on much of what was discussed at the meeting, he hinted on what it was all about.

He said: “I had the honor of being hosted by Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, for a profound discussion on the critical importance of investing in Nigeria’s younger generation and fostering leadership development.

“Our shared vision for an empowered and prosperous future, driven by a commitment to strategic partnerships and investment, serves as a powerful catalyst for transformative change. This meeting has reinforced our determination to collaborate on impactful projects that will not only pave the way for a brighter future but also significantly enhance the growth and stability of our nation’s economy.”

  • Atiku vs George

    Atiku vs George

It’s not the best of times for PDP, the embattled prime opposition party, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Navy Commodore Bode George snapping at each other’s heels.

It’s such a far cry from their halcyon power days when Atiku pulled the strings from Aso Rock Villa as No. 2 and George held court as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Board chair at the Lagos Inner Marina.  It’s all so blighted right now!

Which is why it’s hard to believe that the two old men — the one old political warhorse hardly tired, the other a rippling old soldier — would face off and teach each other the ABC of political gumption!  It’s strange they still belong to the same PDP!

Nevertheless, George would appear the more principled in this current fray.   That is why one of his opening big bombs must have gored Atiku.

If Atiku still wants to gun for the presidency — and Pa George is a soldier, he sure knows a thing or two about devastating gunning! — he should wait till 2031 “because that is the reality of our country, the PDP constitution, and our polity.”

Now, that must have touched a raw nerve!  It was Atiku’s intransigence to run for president in 2023, despite that President Muhammadu Buhari would have just completed an eight-year northern slot, which thrust hot jackknife into PDP’s spine.

Three “demons” emerged: Atiku, the self-named “northern” candidate; Peter Obi,  the “Christian” and “youth” champion, making an opportunistic dash on the Labour Party platform; and, well, George himself: irrevocably committed to a southern candidate for PDP and scorning Atiku for making that a mission impossible.  Suffice to say the three demons cancelled out one another, granting PDP four more years in the power wilderness.

But even old man George — the old soldier must be enjoying himself — raised the ante by flaunting the Biden option before the man from Adamawa, forever foreclosing his never-ever presidential dream.

“We all saw what American President Joe Biden did recently when he stepped down for Kamala Harris to contest the November presidential election,” he said, “That is the hallmark of a statesman.  Alhaji Abubakar should do the same so that in 2027, the PDP will field a southerner as presidential candidate.”

By 2031, Atiku would be 85 — and it would have been game-over!  So, Chief George had better keep his advice to himself!  By the way, much earlier in the verbal slugfest, George had told Atiku to quit whining for, given the grim circumstances, he wouldn’t have done better job aa president.

Atiku’s response, via Paul Ibe, was a rather lame, subversive sympathy for the poor: “The average citizen, and indeed all Nigerians, need to survive … It is insensitive to talk about 2027 now, when the 2023 mandate has not yielded any tangible benefits to Nigerians.”  Then, a no less subversive emotional clincher: “Bode George himself should also turn his attention to counselling Tinubu … instead of prioritizing the politics of 2027.” Toh!

From the sidelines, the Tinubu camp must really be bemused.  When your two sworn “foes” are busy falling upon each other, I guess you need not lift a finger!

Atiku, don fault Fed Govt over 18-year age limit for NECO, WASSCE

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has faulted the Federal Government over the 18-year age limit for pupils writing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations, calling it a barrier to scholarship.

This came as a university lecturer, Dr. Stella Aririguzuh, emphasised that banning under-18 students from sitting for the WASSCE will lead to capital flight.

The Federal Government, through the minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had announced a ban on individuals below 18 years from participating in the NECO and WAEC exams.

Mamman, while appearing on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics’ programme, said the Federal Government has instructed WAEC and NECO to enforce the age requirement for candidates taking these exams.

However, the former Vice President, who reacted to the development via his verified Facebook page yesterday, labelled the policy as controversial and called for universal condemnation from those who value intellectual freedom and accessibility.

He stated: “The recent policy of the Federal Ministry of Education pegging age limits for entry to tertiary institutions is an absurdity and a disincentive to scholarship.

“The policy runs foul of the notion of delineation of responsibilities in a Federal System of government such as we are practising, and gives a graphic impression of how the Tinubu government behaves like a lost sailor on a high sea.

“Otherwise, how is such anti-scholarship regulation the next logical step in the myriad of issues besetting our educational system?

“To be clear, the Nigerian constitution puts education in the concurrent list of schedules, in which the  sub-national government enjoys more roles above the Federal Government.”

The former Vice President highlighted that the most effective global approach is to allow sub-national governments to establish their education laws or regulations.

To Dr. Aririguzuh, who is the Head, Department of Mass Communication, Covenant University at Ota in Ogun, said the proposed policy by the Federal Government would force Nigerians to send their children to overseas countries for further studies.

“More parents will send their children to schools outside Nigeria, further depleting our resources,” Aririguzuh said.

She explained that the policy would kill the zeal of students to push themselves to achieve more in their younger days.

Aririguzuhnoted that the advantage of the policy was that the country would have matured students coming into the universities.

    • 2027 not my focus, exVP replies PDP elders

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to wait till 2031, if he wants to contest for president again.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate in last year’s general election, lost to President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement yesterday, George said a Southerner must occupy the office of the President and Commander-in-Chief from 2023 till 2031 “because that is the reality of our country, the PDP constitution, and our polity”.

He added: “Even in 2027, Atiku will be 81 years, and this is the time for him to embrace the President Joe Biden concept of allowing the younger generation to run for the highest office in the land.

“I have nothing personal against Alhaji Abubakar. He is my friend. But the truth must be told. By 2027, by God’s Grace, I will also be in my 80s.

“So, what am I looking for in public office as an octogenarian? The same principle should apply to Alhaji Abubakar.

“We all saw what American President Joe Biden did recently when he stepped down for Kamala Harris to contest the November presidential election.

“That is the hallmark of a statesman. Alhaji Abubakar should do same so that in 2027, the PDP will field a Southerner as presidential candidate.”

The former military governor of Ondo State, noted that immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner from Katsina State, left office after ruling for eight years.

He said power at the federal level could not go to the North in 2027 because “that is the reality of our country and our party’s constitution”.

According to him, Section 7, Sub-section 3 (C) of the PDP Constitution states that zoning and rotation must be maintained for justice, fairness and equity.

George said: “In our party, this is the right and logical thing to do in the present political circumstances.

“But if Alhaji Abubakar is desperate to contest again, I will advise him as a friend, a party man and brother to wait till 2031. By then, he will be 85 years.

“As loyal party members, we must continue to respect the PDP constitution. Fair is fair. I joined the PDP in 1998 and I have remained in this party since.”

The PDP chieftain recalled that he was elected National Vice Chairman (Southwest) and later Deputy National Chairman and now a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and one of the respected elders and credible voices of our party.

He said: “I have not defected to any other party. While I was in Wadata Plaza (the PDP national secretariat in Abuja), Alhaji Abubakar was in the Villa as Vice President. So, we know ourselves; the two of us know the principles guiding this party. We should not do anything that will destroy our party and the country.

“In 2027, the concept of Turn-by-Turn Nigeria Limited must be strictly followed by our party.

“The PDP must look for a southerner to wrest power from the All Progressives congress (APC)…

“So, Nigerians are waiting for us to rescue them in 2027, but a southerner must lead the battle.”

In a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe, the one-time vice president said: “It is about 2025 and 2026 and beyond. His concern is about the plight of Nigerians who are literarily going through hell because of the failed trial-and-error policies of this administration.

“The average citizen, and indeed all Nigerians, need to survive… It is insensitive to talk about 2027 now, when the 2023 mandate has not yielded any tangible benefits to Nigerians.

“Bode George himself should also turn his attention to counselling Tinubu…instead of prioritising the politics of 2027.”

“So, Nigerians are waiting for us to rescue them in 2027 but a southerner must lead the battle,” he said.

George described as laughable, a report by Abubakar’s media adviser, Mr Paul Ibe, calling him (George) a tribal bigot, over his position on power rotation.

“I read a report by one of Alhaji Abubakar’s media aides accusing me of tribalism,  I just laughed. My best friend today is a Fulani man, Admiral Murtala Nyako.

“I was the Director-General of the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Presidential Campaign Organisation for the 2007 elections. The late president trusted me. So, I cannot be accused of being tribalistic.

“I also served the military well. My records are there for all to see. But, you know in politics, people can say anything to tarnish your image. Despite that, the truth must be told. What you will not accept, don’t give to others.

“I can boldly say that I am a detribalised Nigerian and a committed  member of the PDP. I don’t harbour any disdain or hate for Alhaji Abubakar or any other PDP member,” he said.

George urged every member of the party to” embrace and respect the entrenched principles of zoning and rotation, bestowed on the party by our founding fathers since inception in 1998, “no matter whose ox is gored.

“The principles explicitly stipulate that, at the end of every eight years, all elective and party offices should change from the northern divide to the southern divide  and vice versa.

“That is the position which I will continue to champion till thy kingdom come!,” he said.

“The best global standard for such regulation is to allow the sub-national governments to make respective laws or rules on education.

“It is discouraging that even while announcing this obnoxious policy, the government inadvertently said it had no plan to cater to specially gifted pupils. That statement is an embarrassment to the body of intellectuals in the country because it portrays Nigeria as a country where gifted students are not appreciated.

“The irony here is that should the federal government play any role in education, it is to set up mechanisms that will identify and grant scholarships to gifted students not minding their ages before applying for admission into tertiary institutions.

“This controversial policy belongs in the Stone Ages and should be roundly condemned by everyone who believes in intellectual freedom and accessibility.”

Reps member Onuoha slams Atiku on NNPCL’s acquisition of OVH, cautions against politicisation

House of Representatives member for Isiala Mbano / Onuimo / Okigwe Federal Constituency, Hon Miriam Onuoha, said the oil and gas sector of the economy was too critical to be politicised.

Onuoha stated that while constructive criticism was necessary to strengthen the sector in the national interest, deploying propaganda and blackmail to score cheap political points was unhelpful, and worse, unpatriotic.

She was reacting to a statement by a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar asking the Federal Government to explain why Oando got accelerated approval in AGIP/ENI Purchase, wherein she was quoted to have moved a motion directing the suspension of OVH assets.

In a statement entitled: “THE ATIKU ABUBAKAR ALLEGATION ABOUT NNPC’S ACQUISITION OF OVH”, Onuoha said: “My attention has been drawn to a press release signed by one Phrank Shaibu, on behalf of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, titled: “Atiku to FG: Explain Why Oando Got Accelerated Approval in AGIP/ENI Purchase,” issued on August 25, 2024, wherein I was quoted to have moved a motion directing the suspension of OVH assets.

“The press release reads: “In July 2023, the House of Representatives, following the adoption of a motion moved by Miriam Onuoha, directed NNPC Ltd to suspend the acquisition of OVH assets pending an investigation by its committee.”

“For the record, on July 28, 2023, I sponsored a motion on the “Need to Investigate the Irregularities and Alleged Corruption in the Nigerian Energy Security Provider, NNPC Retail Limited and the Acquisition of OVH Energy Marketing,” in response to petition by staff members of NNPC Limited, who were unsure of their employment status following the acquisition of OVH by NNPC Limited, and subsequent relocation of NNPC Retail Limited to Lagos.

“Following this motion, an ad hoc Committee was set up by the House leadership, and to which I was named a member, to investigate the allegations.”

She stated further: “I would like to state that the Committee invited the Group CEO of NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, the Head of NNPC Retail Limited, and their management staff members, who appeared before the Committee where they gave reasons for the acquisition of OVH, as well as the procedures followed in the acquisition. They also rationalized the relocation to Lagos, which according to them, was to enable easy access to the market.

“From their submissions and the bills, it was obvious that members and management of NNPC Retail were constantly commuting to Abuja to engage in trade, which was not only expensive but was also resulting in loss of man-hour, among other challenges.

“Some staff members of NNPC Limited, who wrote and submitted the petition were also engaged by the Committee, and their fears were allayed on account of the detailed explanation by the NNPC management, and the Committee’s ability to ensure a transparent investigation.

“In the course of the investigation, the Committee undertook a tour of the NNPC Retail facilities in Lagos. The exercise showed that the facilities were in good condition.”

Onuoha continued: “I would like to take this opportunity to commend the management and leadership of NNPC Retail Limited, and indeed, the Group CEO of NNPC Limited, for his pragmatic leadership approach to transparent operations in the energy sector, and management of the NNPC Limited.

“In the course of the investigation, the Committee found that President Bola Tinubu had taken some commendable steps to reposition the oil and gas sector.

“The Committee also discovered that the NNPC Limited, under Mele Kyari, had made significant strides in enhancing transparency and accountability within the company. For instance, despite the criticisms it had received in recent times, the national oil company trumped the distractions by releasing its annual financial statement for 2023, wherein it posted a number of positive results. This demonstrates transparency.

“Mele Kyari’s leadership has been characterised by a commitment to openness, which has fostered and bolstered trust and confidence in and among stakeholders. This, understandably, aligns with the implementation of his leadership’s Transparency, Accountability, and Performance Excellence (TAPE) Agenda, which aims to ensure that NNPC’s operations are open, transparent, and accountable. This management philosophy, from our findings, has involved various measures, such as regular reporting, public disclosure of financial information, and collaboration with external auditors.:

She added: “Also more importantly, the NNPC has increased its communication efforts to engage with the public and address growing concerns. This includes regular press conferences, social media updates, and community outreach programmes.

“Without a doubt, Kyari’s leadership has contributed to building a more transparent and accountable NNPC. His efforts have helped to restore public trust in the NNPC and to position the company as a more responsible corporate citizen. Even so, there is still room for improvement.

“While, as a legislator, I will continue to hold the Executive accountable, I will not allow myself to be used as an instrument of witch-hunt, blackmail, and intimidation. I will not be a willing tool for the opposition to destroy the good work of Mr. President, His Excellency Bola Tinubu, who is the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

“The oil and gas sector is very critical to the Nigerian economy. It should not be politicised. While constructive criticism is necessary to strengthen the sector in the interest of our nation, deploying propaganda and blackmail to score cheap political points is unhelpful, and worse, unpatriotic.”

  • Haba Atiku!

    Haba Atiku!

These days I am full of sympathy for Atiku Abubakar. How else can I feel when a man who is verging on his eighth decade gets so angry, not only angry but bitter, not bitter and angry, but frustrated, and after frustration, we hear him bluster, and when we examine the bluster, it ripples with lies. And what nature of lies? Puerile, perverted and small. Is it the onset of an unknown malady, or is there a peculiar old-age affliction associated with election loss? His series of tirades turned more absurd when he took on the NNPCL over Oando and Tinubu’s son, Seyi. It was not what he wrote that told the story and exposed him but the reply from NNPCL’s Olufemi O. Soneye that turned such an old man into a fuddy-duddy.

Lie: that President Tinubu and Wale Tinubu have shares in OVH.

They have no evidence. The evidence we know is that OANDO has long divested its shares from OVH. If a son of a man has business dealings with the son of another man, does it follow that if both men do a thing, the sons must be involved? It is possible but we don’t assume this until we have proof. Alhaji Atiku, tender your evidence. Stop this babyish rant in public. You are nearing 80.

    • Says PDP reconciliation committee can’t go far

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, said yesterday that there were chances that  party’s presidential flag bearer in the 2023 election,Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would have failed as president  if he had won at the polls.

He said Atiku’s  emergence as president in 2023 would have created many problems for the country including unstable polity.

Fielding questions on Arise Television, George said the PDP is crisis  ridden today because of the choice of Atiku as its presidential candidate at a time the party also had its chairman (Iyorchia Ayu)  from the north.

“By the time Ayu left, he should have left long before the election. There was an agreement. It was the emergence of Atiku from the north as a presidential candidate that completely disorganised the norm of the party,” he said.

Continuing, he said: “The moment we interfered with it, manipulating the whole process to satisfy Atiku, that’s where the problem started. For us to pretend as if there was not a problem, we are just wasting time.

“Let us stand by the truth because it is only the truth that would liberate you. When we had that election, we divided the party (PDP) into two.”

He did not see Atiku succeeding as  president under the circumstances.

His words: “If Atiku had won, I would have stayed in my house because I know for real that  in future he would collapse. This country would never accept.

“If he had won that election you think this country would have been stable? Because somebody from the north had just finished eight years and our own norm is that after the eight years, the presidential candidate must come to the south. Those who are running around for appointments, we wish them best of luck.”

He said the PDP has no moral right to query the “nuisances and nuances going on in this country by the people in government.”

The PDP, according to him,“ got some deeper problems”, with three factions battling for the soul of the party “and it’s not working.”

He declined his appointment as a member of the Disciplinary Committee set up to sanction  members alleged to have  worked against the party in the 2023 general elections.

He said he could not work under Chief Tom Ikimi who is the chairman of the committee.

He said: “I know Tom very well, he met me in this party. The founding fathers handed over to us. So the culture of the party, the do’s and don’ts are with us. So you don’t make me be a member under somebody that I know in terms of hierarchy of the party, and say I should go and serve under him. I made that observation to them. And they said are you going to come, I said no, I’m not.

“I will not serve under Ikimi. I’m being very frank with myself. How much information or depth does he have concerning our party? You don’t do things like that. It’s an observation and I’ve told the Chairman. At this age, I’m ready to stay home.

“Just setting up a committee, where will it lead you?”
