  • Pro Buhari group to Atiku: respect verdict of Nigerians

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has told the Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar to respect the verdict of Nigerians, as well as the position of International Observers on the just-concluded Presidential election.

Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke said in a statement made available to The Nation in Abuja that virtually all the countries and international bodies that sent representatives to observe the election are convinced that the outcome of the election reflects the wishes of majority of the Nigerian electorate.

The group said that all indications point to a President Muhammadu Buhari win, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), recalling “that Atiku Abubakar tweeted just after addressing the media recently that the position of many international observers corroborated his view that the election was a sham.

“But Nigerians know by now that this is a fallacy as many international observers, including reputable locals, have released preliminary reports that are consistent with the outcome of the electoral process”.

The pro-Buhari group said nothing better captured the mindset of the International community on the election than the position of the UK Minister of State for Africa, Harriet Baldwin.

“We at BMO are satisfied that in the midst of PDP’s efforts to discredit the process, Britain, which had its representatives on ground as observers before and after the election, is emphatic that the result declared by the Nigerian electoral commission is consistent with the result obtained through the civil society Parallel Vote Tabulation process.

“If this is not an endorsement of the process based on international best practices, we wonder what it is, especially at a time the opposition is fighting tooth and nail to smear the process as the ‘worst in thirty years.’”

The group also pointed at the position of a reputable observer group, Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA) Africa which released a report that tallied with INEC’s result of the Presidential election.

“A comparison of INEC official results with YIAGA AFRICA #WatchingTheVote estimate showed that what was announced by the Chief Returning Officer and INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu is consisting with field reports from 3,898 observers deployed across the country.

“In its post-election statement, the US and UK-backed group had validated President Buhari’s victory over his closest challenger on the basis of reports from 1,491 or 98.4 per cent of sampled polling units

“YIAGA Africa’s findings showed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) should receive between 50.0 per cent and 55.8 per cent of the vote; and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) should receive between 41.2 per cent and 47.0 per cent of the vote.

“INEC’s result however showed that President Buhari scored 55.6 percent while Atiku Abubakar had 41.2 percent, so YIAGA’s position tallies with what was announced by Professor Yakubu at the National Collation Centre in Abuja.

“These figures are consistent with the official results as announced by INEC. For both APC and PDP, the official results fall within the PVT estimated ranges.”

BMO said if Atiku has any doubt about the veracity of YIAGA Africa’s position that President Buhari won fair and square, he should remember that its technical partners are the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the US-based National Democratic Institute (NDI).

  • Elections: US congratulates Buhari, Nigerians

The United States Government has congratulated Nigeria on a successful presidential election and President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election.

In a statement to The Nation titled ‘Nigerian Election Results’, Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo praised “Nigerians who participated peacefully in the election.”

Buhari, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), beat his main challenger Abubakar Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by nearly four million votes in the February 23 polls.

The US also condemned “those whose acts of violence harmed Nigerians and the electoral process.”

The statement added: “We note the assessments of international and domestic observer missions affirming the overall credibility of the election, despite localized violence and irregularities.

“We also congratulate all the other candidates for their peaceful participation in the electoral process. We call on all Nigerians to ensure successful state elections next week.

“Going forward, the United States remains committed to working together with Nigeria to achieve greater peace and prosperity for both our nations.

  • APC legal team to Atiku: we’re ready for you

The legal team of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council yesterday told the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, that it is fully prepared to defend the President’s victory in court.

Rising from an emergency meeting in Abuja, the legal team urged the former vice president and all those who are not at peace with the outcome of the presidential election to seek judicial redress as that was the only constitutional thing to do.

In a communiqué signed by the Council’s Deputy Legal Director, Prof Mamman Lawan Yusufari, the APC legal team condemned the acts of violence that occurred in some parts of the country during the elections.

Members of the team congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari for winning the 2019 presidential election and thanked Nigerians for their overwhelming support.

They also commended other presidential candidates, political parties and their support groups for their general respect for law during the campaigns.

They also commends the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting the Presidential and National Assembly Election in substantial compliance with the law and condemned the few cases of violence in some parts of the country and calls on the appropriate authorities to deal with the perpetrators in accordance with the law.

“We calls on interested parties who are not satisfied with the results of the elections to challenge same by following due process of the law, and affirms its readiness to defend the resounding victory of President Muhammadu Buhari with all the legal expertise at its disposal.”

  • Accept defeat, Umar tells Atiku

A Former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa  Umar yesterday asked the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alh. Atiku Abubakar to accept defeat.

He also urged Atiku to shelve plans to go to Presidential Election Tribunal. He however pleaded with Buhari to reunite the nation and avoid hounding the opposition leaders.

He tasked the President to check his overzealous supporters from heating up the polity

Abubakar, who made the appeal in a statement in Abuja, said Abubakar has an obligation to tread cautiously in the interest of the nation

The statement said: “No one in good conscience ever thought an exercise as gigantic as conducting a Presidential election in a country as vast as Nigeria, would go without hitches and setbacks. And in spite of the generally positive comments by observers, last Saturday’s exercise did not.

“It goes without saying that the outcome of an imperfect exercise cannot but remain imperfect itself – a fair illustration of the dictum; garbage in garbage out. In the circumstances, we are obliged to look with sympathy at the decision by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar not to concede defeat but to mount a legal challenge against the result of the Presidential election that held on the 23rd of February, 2019; result that gave victory to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress. And yet, regardless of the way he feels about it, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has an obligation to tread cautiously, taking into account the impact any action he or other leaders take will have on the gravely tense political and security conditions prevailing in Nigeria today.  “As we are well aware, elections and electioneering campaigns in Nigeria as in much of Africa, have almost always proved to be deadly triggers for strife, apprehension, disputes and other forms of conflict, often leading to violence and bloodshed.

“The longer and the more protracted the process, the heavier the toll. Sadly, Nigeria has suffered terribly from these calamities in the course of this bitterly contested election exercise.”

Umar said Abubakar’s refusal to concede defeat may seriously detract from the high pedestal that he deserves in Nigeria’s political establishment.

The statement added: “Atiku Abubakar and his party ran an admirably strong and sophisticated campaign. He should be justly proud of his achievements. He had established his credentials as a powerful and worthy alternative presidential material now and in the years to come.

“Unfortunately, his decision not to accept the outcome of this election or conceded victory to his opponent may seriously detract from the high pedestal that he deserves in Nigeria’s political establishment. In the interest of peace and our democracy, I as one of his admirers, advise that he reconsiders that decision.”

But Umar urged President Buhari to reunite the nation and run an inclusive government.

The statement said: “While at this, we hasten to remind the declared winner that he does not have all that much time to redeem his pledges of being a leader ad unifier of all Nigerians. The public had welcomed with cautious optimism the promises he made in his acceptance speech to run an inclusive government.

“To become a leader of all Nigerians requires that he ignores the voting pattern that brought him to power and consider the country as one large family.

“Agitations over marginalization, particularly in appointments to key government and public offices mounted by groups including Ohaneze Ndigbo, PANDEP, Middle-belt Forum, Northern Elders Forum, and all those well-meaning citizens must be addressed and redressed.

”Opposition politicians must not be treated as enemies, haunted or destroyed.

“A meticulous adherence to the rule of law must be observed. History beckons on President Muhammadu Buhari to take a giant leap forward and re-invent himself.

“Within his grasp lies the chance to transform into a statesman and become the real father of the nation. Finally, he must discourage and disavow the antics of his overzealous supporters whose excessive and provocative triumphal display can only overheat and further polarize the polity.”

  • APC legal team to Atiku: we’re prepared for you

The legal team of the APC Presidential Campaign Council has told the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar it was fully prepared to defend the President’s victory in court.

Rising from an emergency meeting in Abuja, the legal team asked the former Vice President and all those who are not at peace with outcome of the Presidential election to seek redress in court as that was the only constitutional thing to do.

In a communiqué by the Deputy Director, Legal, of the Council, Prof Mamman Lawan Yusufari, the APC legal team condemned the acts of violence that occurred in some parts of the country during the elections.

It congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari for winning the 2019 presidential election and thanked Nigerians for their overwhelming support.

It commended the presidential candidates, political parties and their support groups for their general respect for the law in the campaign activities,

The team also commended INEC for conducting the presidential and National Assembly elections in substantial compliance with the law and condemn the few cases of violence in some parts of the country and calls on the appropriate authorities to deal with the perpetrators in accordance with the law,

  • God never destined Atiku to be President, says Oshiomhole

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Thursday said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was destined never to be President.

He also said the APC was prepared to meet the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in court.

Addressing a news conference on the outcome of the Presidential and National Assembly elections and the decision of the PDP candidate to reject the results, Oshiomhole said Atiku was desperate to be President of Nigeria and has been jumping from one party to the other to actualise his ambition.

He said it smacks of arrogance for the former Vice President to believe that the destiny of Nigerians is tied to his being President.

He stressed that Atiku and the PDP were never committed to the peace accord, accusing them of only being interested in being winners.

According to him: “I think it is arrogance for Atiku to think that our future is tied to his Presidency. Atiku is destined never to be President of Nigeria and I ask you to review his character. Leadership is about character.

“Atiku’s desperation is so obvious. He is so desperate that in 2003, he challenged his own boss, Obasanjo. He decamped to join ACN and we offered him the ticket and he lost the election and returned to PDP.

“He contested again and lost the nomination and because he has only his interest at heart, he decamped again from PDP.

“He joined us in Lagos and rolled out the dollars but we voted for Buhari as our candidate. He knew that he cannot defeat Buhari in the primary and went back to the PDP.

“Do you think that such a political rolling stone, does he think that Nigerians are so insincere as to think that a man who is not stable and whose interest is about himself will be a possible candidate to be elected?

“What makes him have that sense of entitlement that he must be President of Nigeria? You cannot deny anyone the right to dispute the outcome of an election however free and fair.

“So, we hope and we are looking forward to meeting Atiku Abubakar in court. We might also choose to also cross petition because there were many areas we can dispute.

“In Adamawa state, he had already lost the election before he did some magic that gave him that narrow victory in Adamawa state.”

Oshiomhole said the turnout of voters in the north east especially in Borno state was a reflection of the substantial peace that has returned to the area.

He argued if the former Vice President does not know about the peace in the area, it could be because he does not go home regularly.

  • Buhari not bothered by Atiku’s court threat – Presidency

The Presidency on Wednesday night said that it was not bothered by the decision of the candidate of the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar to challenge the outcome of the February 23 Presidential election in court.

Buhari on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was on Wednesday morning declared winner of the presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking to State House correspondent after a dinner hosted by President Buhari for some of the APC members at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha said that the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act have made the provision for any candidate that is dissatisfied with election result to seek redress in court.

He said “We are not jittery at all because the process was open and transparent. It was a credible election and we will continue to savour in the victory but in the process too, we will extend the hand of friendship for the purpose of nation-building and reconciliation.

“Our electoral Act and the constitution have both provided a window for whoever is dissatisfied with the process of election to seek redress. That is the path and we will encourage them to go along that path.” he stated

He also assured Nigerians that President Buhari would do more for them in his second term, especially in the area of infrastructure development.

He said: “Looking into the future of the country, the President is very clear about what he wants to do. He will stand on the three pivot points that he pushed forward in 2015; securing the nation, diversifying the economy and also fighting corruption with all intensity.

“There will be inclusiveness all over the place. This is one government that has really invested in social infrastructure by bringing people who are below the poverty level up and out of poverty.

“There are so many things that we are looking forward to and I am very thrilled and grateful that we had this opportunity to now consolidate on the tenets and gains of our democracy.” he said

  • Atiku calls Obasanjo

BOOKMAKERS were confused. Some said it was going to be down to the wire. Others saw a rout. Atiku Abubakar, they vowed, was set to retire Muhammadu Buhari and send him back to Daura to tend his cows. Buhari, others claimed, will carry the day.

And the long wait – the election took place on Saturday and the winner was announced at 4.39 a.m. Wednesday when many Nigerians were still snoring in bed – had everyone in a flap.

Will an Elder Godsday Orubebe – where in the world is he? – show up at the collation centre, screaming and huffing and kicking and cursing and swearing and daring Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to continue the collation and announcement of the results? Can Yakubu play Jega, Prof Attahiru Jega, his predecessor at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who remained unfazed as Orubebe went gaga? Will a judge issue an injunction stopping the show? The rumour was all over the place that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was shopping for a judge who will grant an “ex parte order” that the exercise should be stopped. Will somebody listen to the PDP’s shrill cry that the collation be cancelled? When exactly will the winner collect his prize? The anxiety was so much you could feel it. Many were wondering what the PDP had up its sleeves as it summoned its war council, the national caucus, to pooh-pooh the election.

And the denouement. Yakubu announced Buhari as winner. He won with 15,191,847 votes. Atiku scored 11,262,978.

There were many rumours. Some said Atiku was meeting with some foreign envoys to complain that he had been robbed. They should intervene to save democracy, he was said to have told them. As usual with such speculations, nobody could confirm it as no documentation of such meetings existed. Others said Atiku was under pressure to call Buhari and congratulate him. Yet, others –again without any proof whatsoever – swore that Atiku called former President Olusegun Obasanjo, one of his major backers, to seek advice on his next line of action.

Could that be true? Is it not logical for Atiku to call Obasanjo, who put his integrity on the line for him in so controversial a manner? What did they discuss? “Editorial Notebook” asked an Atiku aide to clear the air on the rumour. He declined comments. Luckily, this reporter ran into a former school mate who claims to be close to the uncle of a friend of his whose maternal cousin works in the sprawling hilltop facility of the former president in the heart of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. He swore that Atiku actually called Obasanjo, but he confessed that he was not privy to the details of their discussion, even as he pleaded not to be named because of what he called the “sensitivity” of the matter.

Here, nevertheless, is a conjectural account of the discussion between Obasanjo and Atiku since nobody would confirm or deny that they talked, let alone divulge the details:

Atiku lies on a couch in the living room, surrounded by some friends and aides who are harrumphing about the election and its result. He suddenly rises and asks for his mobile phone. He goes into a room and calls Obasanjo.

Good morning, Your Excellency. This is Atiku Abubakar. I hope I didn’t wake you up sir.”

Obasanjo: Waziri, is that you? Good morning. And how are you?

Atiku:  I am fine sir. And you, baba?

Obasanjo: Thank you. I dey kampe.

Atiku: Your Excellency, I am a bit worried. I am sure you must have heard the result of the election. Is this a true reflection of the wishes of the majority of Nigerians? What is going on? I am worried, walahi, that democracy is being emasculated.

“Huuuu! Huuuum! (Obasanjo clears his throat). You see, Abubakar, why are you worried? Is this the first time you have lost an election? Why allow your soul to be troubled?”

Baba, people have been mounting pressure on me to surrender. These are people, who should be fighting this big injustice against us; this obvious rigging and theft of my mandate, a mandate freely given to me by Nigerians. I will go to court, I swear. I am a fighter and I will fight this injustice.

“One even said I should call Buhari and congratulate him. And I said, ‘for what?’ Where is that done? You contest an election, you are rigged out and you won’t go to court to fight it out and you will, instead, be calling the so-called winner. I am not a fool; I won’t.”

“You see, Waziri, if I were you, I will simply call my opponent and say, ‘okay, as things stand now, you won, abi? It was all a game and in the true spirit of  true sportsmanship, I congratulate you’, Chikena! I will move on. But you politicians are hard of hearing.”

“Sir, you say ‘we politicians’; are you no longer one of us? Are you not our leader?”

“Me? I am not a politician o. With due respect, I am not. I am a statesman. I said so a long time ago. That is why I have stayed out of it. Nigeria is my politics. Anybody, I repeat, anybody who wants to destroy Nigeria, I don’t care; I am ready to go konko bilo with that person, no matter his position.

“If they say Buhari has won, so be it. But if you have the courage to fight, as you have claimed, rally the media, get your supporters to organise mass protests in major cities and call on the world to rise and save democracy in Nigeria.”

Baba, what will our people say, our supporters across the length and breadth of this country? The masses of our people who we promised jobs, education, security; those who expect us to get Nigeria working again; what do we tell them? I refuse to surrender.”

“Waziri, if anybody says you have not done well, dat na dem toro. You don’t owe anybody any apology. Let them also try and see how easy it is.”

“Sir, what is the feeling of our foreign friends? I was surprised to see that some of them saw nothing wrong in the process – the violence, the disenfranchisement of many people who wanted to vote for us – and I said kai! And I… .”

“Okay. Hold on. Hold it, please. You see, Oyinbo people won’t say what they didn’t see o. I didn’t expect it to go this way. I must confess. We can’t condemn this election on the basis of violence; it was largely peaceful. Is that clear?”

“But, baba, if you tell them it is not peaceful; won’t they believe you?”

“Please, my dear Waziri. Again, with due respect, I can’t lie. I have never lied. I don’t know how to lie and it is too late at my age to learn how to lie. God has given me all that I have asked for. So, why should I lie? But if you want me to join this fight, I will. I can talk to our foreign friends and my fellow statesmen, the Generals that they should not allow democracy to suffer.”

“Some of our people are even saying you destroyed my chances with all you wrote about me in your book. I have told them not to embarrass you and… .”

“Please, hold it! Don’t annoy me o. Me? Embarrass me? Point of correction. And get me straight and clear; nobody can embarrass Obasanjo. Not me. Never. If I wrote about you nko? Were they deaf when I told the whole world that you had repented? I said, ‘yes, Atiku was bad; he has confessed and repented and I have forgiven him. He promised not to do it again. Not so? If they are now saying all that nonsense and jagbajantics, that I contributed to your loss, that’s their problem, not my headache.”

“No problem sir. I hear they are so afraid we could cause problems for them. They have asked the security people to start watching us.”

“Security? Trouble ko treble ni? Let them keep watching. Security my foot. I dey my house, let them come and carry me.

“Even Secondus is asking me to call you and say my mind – that I must defend democracy and … .”

“W-a-z-i-r-i. Thank you. Secondus; who is so called? I dey laugh o! (He chuckles). You see, when you make Secondus your chairman, do you need to search for why you’re second? If you carry second, na Obasanjo do am? A beg I need to go back to bed. I have a squash game to play in a few hours. I wish you all the best.”

    “Bye-bye sir.”

UNILAG Eight and their distraught victim

A UNIVERSITY of Lagos (UNILAG) student, 17, has told of how eight fellow students  gang-raped her, filmed the act and blackmailed her with it. Five of the suspects have been arraigned before a court. The others are being sought.

The victim was afraid of telling her story, but her friend helped her to unload her burden. She was hospitalised for days. The parents of some of the suspects offered her parents between N3m and N5m to settle the matter, but they refused to sell their dignity.

Justice Sururat Soladoye of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court has adjourned the hearing till March 18. Rights activists and all lovers of justice should pay attention to this case, which is a vivid expression of man’s inhumanity to man, pure savagery and bestiality.

The parents who tried to bribe the victim’s family are shameless and useless – even to their children who took a fiendish pleasure in hurting their fellow student. Where is that common humanity that separates us from animals in the jungle? We need to find it and restore it through the instrumentality of law and justice as well as good parenting..

  • Atiku: We’ve real figures of presidential election

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 23 presidential election Atiku Abubakar has continued to protest the outcome of the contest.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Wednesday declared incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the poll.

But at a world press conference in Abuja Wednesday, Atiku described the outcome of the election as the implementation of “grand theft” of the people’s will.

According to him, the figures declared by INEC as results of the presidential election did not add up.

He said: “We have the real figures, we have the facts that were spoken so loudly on Saturday, February 23, 2019.

“Let me say that I am not speaking as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. I am speaking as a Nigerian when I say that the electoral fraud perpetrated by the Buhari administration this past Saturday cannot produce a government of the people for the simple reason that it does not reflect the will of the Nigerian people.

“It is for this reason that I, Atiku Abubakar, reject the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission declaring Muhammadu Buhari as duly returned by the majority of lawful votes.

“I am conferring with not just my party but also with the Nigerian people, on next steps, which will be revealed to the public shortly”.

He appealed to Nigerians who may feel angry, disillusioned and let down by the process to remain calm and steadfast, saying that Rome was not built in a day.

“This is a long journey but I am confident of victory. All hope is not lost. Stay strong, by the grace of God we shall triumph,” Atiku declared.

Going specific, the PDP candidate said in Akwa-Ibom State for instance, the results showed a statistical impossibility of a 62 percent drop in the number of voters from the 2015 elections even when voter registration and PVC collection rates were much higher than in 2015.

He said the pattern was repeated in strongholds of the Peoples Democratic Party, including Delta, Rivers, Abia and Benue states.

Lamenting further, Atiku said: “As this was occurring, we saw another statistical impossibility wherein voter turnout and numbers increased astronomically in Borno State by an almost miraculous 82% in the midst of increased insecurity.

“This pattern was also repeated in other strongholds of the All Progressive Congress.

“One begins to ask if insecurity is conducive to higher voter turnouts and security is antithetical to high voter turnout.

“It is further curious that the Peoples Democratic Party’s margin of victory in states outside the Southeast and South-south were extremely slim across board. That again is a statistical impossibility.

“My dear Nigerians, it is for this reason that I Atiku Abubakar reject the result declared by the INEC which declared Muhammadu Buhari as duly returned by the majority of the lawful votes.

“As I have always said, this year, is my three decades in Nigeria’s

struggle for democracy. And this is the worst election in those 30 years.

“I told Gen Abdsulsalami (Abubakar) two nights ago when he called me that not even the military conducted such a worst election.

“This is a long journey but I am confident of victory. All hope is not lost, stay strong. By the grace of God, we shall triumph”.

Atiku regretted that foreign investors and friends of Nigeria were already pulling out of the country, stressing the Stock Market lost N85 billion on Tuesday alone while election results were being announced.

He appealed to them to be patient and keep to faith with the Nigerian people, saying their problem was not with the Nigerian people but with those that “stole” their mandate.
