  • Why Atiku won’t win in South-West

I was moved with pity for Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar and his presidential team during the campaign rally held few days go at Mapo Hall in Ibadan.

About six kilometres from the venue of the rally at a car wash off Iwo Road, a man is his 30s speaking in the ever amusing Ibadan dialect described the event as a gathering of thieves at Mapo’ while another colleague of his quipped, “are they coming again, never”.

This is just a sample of caustic and brazen unleashing of uncomplimentary utterances around south West of Nigeria against the political actors of People’s Democratic Party and the Party itself.  These uncomplimentary remarks deriding the PDP are in form of jokes, and abusive songs in deep Yoruba language of which English translation can never be accurate.

Shutting down of businesses and paralyzing traffic flow around Mapo is not new, even the least known of the parties have done the same in the past, but because of curiosity not for popularity and acceptance the half capacity crowd at Mapo must have falsely given the leadership of PDP the assurance of popularity.

Unlike in some geopolitical zone, the Yoruba people are unique when it comes to political affiliation and leaning but that does not mean that individuals groups are no free to make their choices.

The communal nature of Yoruba reflects in their political and social choices, therefore, political parties that have egalitarianism and welfarism embedded in their central policy are embraced. The was why parties like Action Group (AG), Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) Alliance for Democracy (AD) and recently All Peoples Congress APC were dominant in the West. All things being equal the pattern of voting in South West is predictably unchanged.

Since it’s a tradition based on what I see as a cultural belief, the pattern of voting and the political leaning of the Yoruba has not changed even with the federal might that brought the three months old NPN, government to power in Oyo State in 1983, and the PDP interregnum in Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo except Lagos in 2003 governorship election. The question is where are those leaders of NPN and PDP in the political calculation of these Yoruba states today. They can’t be identified with any political party or well-known Yoruba socio-cultural organizations.

Interestingly, however Nigeria as a whole has developed a pattern of political learning and voting with its manifestation since 1959 and even in 1979. The election of 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 sealed and altered the pattern in some political zones but in 2015 because of the progressive leaning of the north President Mohammed Buhari was elected thereby fulfilling the wishes of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Alhaji Aminu Kano. Both legends were welfarists known for their concern for the poor and around whom their politics were centered. But would Buhari still maintain his grip of the Yoruba states at this forth coming election? Yes, without and shaking, the states are his and with the inherent nature of the people of the region known for celebrating people of intergtiy, incorruptibility, modesty, hard work and not-me-before-others attitude.

With the support of Ashiwaju Ahmed Tinubu and his lieutenants across the West, President Buhari has no problem securing the majority of the votes from the region. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the Leaders of various sociocultural groups who have been showing their preferences and endorsements for Alhaji Atiku are embarking on an exercise in futility because they know the nature of their people. Even Chief Obasanjo was aware of this in 2015 when he declared openly for candidate Buhari. He knew where the pendulum was swinging in favour of Buhari’s victory. It is believed that his endorsement of Atiku is a deceit because he lacked electoral value to support the endorsement even in Abeokuta.

The impact of groups like Afenifere, Yoruba council of elders on the presidential election outcome has largely been little and even non-existent retrospectively since the passing on of Chief Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Bola Ige and Chief Abraham Adesanya whose position on any political issue got automatic approval of majority of Yoruba and even non-Yoruba alike. It is therefore not so difficult to predict presidential voting pattern in the West, for example, a mere opinion sampling among the real voting population tells you who would have the most votes. These are people in the circles of artisans, market women, students, commercial drivers, farmers and traders.

These are people who in previous democratic exercises knew which of the political parties and actors delivered on their promises and which tallied with their cultural and traditional demands.

It is therefore highly likely that this perception would be brought to bear while scrutinizing candidates for their votes for the president in 2019.

The reputation of People Democratic Party (PDP) as a party of plunderers of the nation’s resources is an albatross for all their members including Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the eyes of the people of western Nigeria. The on-going trials, seizure and forfeitures of frightening huge sum of money traced to PDP stalwarts are well known to the people of the region. Unlike in other geo political zones, those who were indicted in south west have all gone underground with their family members and relations hiding themselves in shame from the public. Those who are not in hiding are in inconsequential political parties just to satisfy all righteousness.

Lagos known for the highest numbers of voting population, will go Buhari way just at the rest five other states in the zone and with Asiwaju Tinubu leading the Progressive forces the coast is clear for President Buhari. Asiwaju Tinubu has enormous influence on the voters of the region clearly ahead of any individuals and socio-cultural groups reminiscent of the legendary influence and leadership of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The PDP is an object of ridicule and jokes in the west on the grounds of their administration inability to increase electricity supply by one megawatt in 16 years it was in power in spite of the whooping $16 Billion spent for the purpose by Chief Obasanjo’s administration, the shambolic state of roads and other critical infrastructure, unfulfilled promises on tertiary education and health facilities in the country in spite of huge revenue from oil throughout their tenure. Crude oil sold for between $80 and $145 during the PDP years while it nosedived to as low as $29 when President Buhari took over.

The reputation of President Buhari as incorruptible, selfless and a person known for his spartan life endeared him to the Yoruba.

As principled people, it will not only be a herculean task but an impossibility for Alhaji Atiku to garner enough votes in Yoruba land not withstanding his promise in Ibadan while launching his campaign that he would embark on restructuring six months into his tenure. The question is why did he make the promise in Ibadan and not in Sokoto, Kano or Maiduguri?

The promise was deliberately targeted at the Yoruba because he felt that is what they wanted to hear.

He dare not say such in Northern Nigeria, because of the wrath of the Northern establishment of which he is one as well as the entire conservatives and elites all of whom are against restructuring.

The widely publicized use of foreign currencies at the PDP presidential convention where he was elected as the presidential candidate in Port Harcourt is undoubtedly of serious implications in the eyes of Yoruba people and other right thinking Nigerians who are expressing fears and concerns about the security of the federal tilt in event Alhaji Atiku emerged the winner. Just as a colleague observed that government money to politician of his creed is free money. It is impossible for Yoruba people to go for a candidate who led his members to such a shameful and brazen act of waste because of the quest for power. The dollar rain was an open exhibition of contempt for our own currency by politicians who should be an embodiment of patriotism. Can they ever be proud of our naira? I don’t think so.

The issue of non-issuance of visa to Alhaji Atiku by the United State government is of a grave consequence for his presidential ambition with the question, why was he denied visa for 11 years? It is believed in south-west that he must have committed a criminal offence for US government to have black listed him only short of declaring him wanted.

His denial of visa means a lot to voters in the west because the people are sufficiently informed enough to know the implication for someone who wants to be president of Nigeria to be in that diplomatic mess. They see it as an embarrassment to Nigerians at home and abroad for any presidential candidate no matter his chances at the polls. In a saner environment such candidate would not even venture to go for any elective office.

  • Atiku promises ease of doing business in Southeast

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has assured businessmen and women in the Southeast that his administration would ensure the ease of doing business if he is elected President in 2019.

Atiku spoke at the Aba Sports Club in Aba, Abia State, during a town hall meeting with stakeholders and captains of industries in the Southeastern.

The presidential candidate noted that the place of Southeast businessmen and women in the economy of the country and the West African region could not be underestimated, saying he was aware of the constraints and challenges facing business in the east, and the country at large. He promised to address the challenges as soon as he becomes the president.

Atiku lamented that the country’s economy was nosediving because the present presidential economic team does not possess the requisite skills to turn the economy around.

He, therefore, promised to use knowledge garnered as a public officer and businessman to turn things around economically.

Atiku also promised to give attention to Onne and Calabar Ports to ease the congestion of Lagos port.

He said: “I know of your challenges because I’m a business man like you. Your pain is also my pain; I face the same challenges you are facing, but the only thing we can do to change the situation is to change the government in power now.

“This present government lacks the understanding and the capacity to turn our economy around, and promote the ease of doing business. We would ensure that policies that would encourage businesses to thrive in Nigeria are put in place.”

Vice Presidential candidate Peter Obi said Atiku has ideas of solving the country’s problems and supporting the growth of the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMES), who he described as the backbone of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

According to Obi, the economy is in comatose because the manufacturing industry, which was contributing over 50 per cent to the economy in the 80’s, is currently injecting only 20 per cent now.

He said: “Atiku is a businessman; he understands the economy. He feels your pains and knows what to do to make the economy work again. The problem with Nigeria is that those in power are not business-minded, and that is why they cannot solve the problem of the economy.”

Host Governor Okezie Ikpeazu said there was no better way to improve the economy without one-on-one interaction with businessmen and manufacturers. He said his government was doing so well in promoting small and medium scales business through the made in Aba campaign.

  • Igbo leaders backing Atiku are saboteurs, say Buhari supporters

A group, the Presidential Support Committee, has said that Igbo leaders who endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, are working to sabotage the chance of the Southeast to produce the President in 2023.

Its Southeast caucus spokesman, Charlene Adeasor, said in Abuja at the end of their meeting that Southeast governors and  leaders were determined to subvert the aspiration of the Igbo people.

He said it is important that President Muhammadu Buhari should secure bloc votes from the region as part of the process marking the greater integration of Igbo into the ruling party.

Adeasor said: “There was a time we had a press conference and said what our brother could not do for us in six years, Buhari has done under four years. Before Buhari came, one lane of the Enugu Port Harcourt road was almost covered with grasses.  If you go there today, you discovered that the dual carriage way is being worked on.  The one that shocked me is the Owerri Aba express road.

“In terms of infrastructure,  we are witnessing what he think about the Igbo people.  So,  those who think that Buhari does not like the Igbo people are scared because these are the treasury looters.  Buhari is a man who has the love of the country at heart and that is why we are doing everything to make sure he comes back.”

The spokesman said “I called them saboteurs because most of them have already taken side and I was the one that manufactured the word saboteur.

“The Igbos are trying to copy the South west who got the attention of Nigerians because they put their house in order when they voted for UPN enmass. Now that we are trying to move into the APC, you can see governors who we call saboteurs are trying to team up to make sure that the dream of the Igboman in 2023 does not come to light. That is why I label them saboteurs.

“The essence of this briefing is to let the entire pdp world know that we are ready for the next general election. We want to be our house together so that those who are in doubt as to whether President Muhammadu Buhari is in the south,  they should know that there is a committee that is active in the south east with a strong determination to make sure he is reelected in 2019.

“We are ready for the election.  We have heard all the negative plans of the People’s Democratic Party and the talk that we have an Igbo man as running mate.  We are not talking about an Igbo man as running mate, but the man who is at the helm of affairs and that is Bulgari.

“We want to let the whole world know that we have capable hands that will work to make sure Buhari return to power. We are telling the PDP people that we are ready. The Igbos have made up their mind to give Buhari bulk vote in 2019.

“For those still in doubt,  let me tell you that the south east is together. We cannot talk about an Igbo President in 2023 if we are not united. We are going to do what we are known for and saboteurs will not have a place in the south east. We are going to deliver Mr President.”

  • Atiku promises youths 40 per cent appointments

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has said 40 per cent of the appointments will go to youths, if elected.

Atiku, who spoke yesterday in Lagos at a youth town hall meeting, said his administration would focus on job creation and infrastructure development.

He added that the youths must be given the opportunity to serve and develop their leadership skills.

The former vice president said as future leaders, the best way to get them ready for the task ahead was to get them practically involved.

He added that youths constitute an integral part of the electoral process.

Atiku said: “I am making this promise that 40 per cent of appointments in my government will be youth. It is a promise. I will not break it. My Minister of Youth Development will be younger than 30 years.

“Therefore, if you are younger than 30 years, you can bring your CV. This is simply because the youths are the future of this country. We will build a good future for the country through them.

“We are here because of your future. I have four children but only one is working for government while the rest are working for me in my various companies.”

The PDP candidate said he intended to create jobs by lowering taxes and industrial tariffs for the private sector.

The former vice president noted that this was the trend in industrialised economy.

“In most industrialised countries, it is the private sector that creates jobs. How do they do that? They lower the tax rate.

“If you issue lower tax rates to most companies, they will create jobs. These are the types of incentives you offer the private sector so that they will be able to create jobs.

“I know about creation of jobs and I understand the dynamics of stable and focused economies. As it is, the present administration has no economist. That is what you get in such a situation.”

PDP’s vice presidential candidate  Peter Obi said the Federal Government’s trader-moni programme was not impacting.

He said: “They are giving market traders N10,000 for their businesses. I don’t know anywhere in the world such exists.

“It is called vote-buying. If you go to anywhere in the world, such is non-existent. The country is experiencing a lot of hardship every day and we continue this way.”

  • Atiku: corruption has become official policy under Buhari

PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has said corruption has become official policy under President Muhammadu Buhari.

Atiku said he was taken aback last when the sacked Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. David Babachir Lawal, turned up at the Presidential Villa last Thursday, where he was received with pomp and pageantry.

Lawal was sacked in 2016 for diverting to personal use, funds meant for the feeding and rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Northeast.

The sacked SGF had on Thursday attended a political event, tagged: ‘Together Nigeria’, which was organised by the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO).

A statement yesterday by Atiku’s Media Adviser Paul Ibe said it’s a very sad day for Nigeria, when the President honoured a man proven beyond all reasonable doubts to have soiled his hands with money meant for starving IDPs.

“These are the actions that feed the perceptions that have made Nigeria turn in its worst ever Corruption Perception Index rating by Transparency International, where we went back 12 steps in 2018’s rankings, moving from 136 under President Jonathan to 148 today”, the statement said.

Quoting the Transparency International, Atiku said Nigeria is more corrupt today than ever before.

He raised a number of questions for the administration to answer: “Who reinstated and double promoted Maina? Who owns the Ikoyi Apartment $42 million? What has happened to Aisha Buhari’s ADC, who looted N2.5 billion?

“Why was the $25 billion Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) contracts awarded without due process investigated? Why haven’t those beyond Buhari’s padded budget scandals been sacked or charged to court?

“When will Babachir Lawal be charged? How come fuel subsidy has doubled even when petrol price has doubled? Why did President Buhari lift the suspension of the corrupt National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) boss, Usman Yusuf, before public pressure forced him to suspend him? Why has he not been charged?

“In May, Transparency International warned that Buhari had increased Security Vote by 600 per cent, yet our soldiers have no weapons and are killed by terrorists. Where is the money going?

“In February, Buhari withdrew $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account to ostensibly fund the war on terror, yet the Chief of Army Staff said after Metele that they have no weapons. Where did that money go?”

  • 2019: Ezeife, Obi, Nwosu, others endorse Atiku

The Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket received a boost at the weekend when a frontline Igbo political organisation, Igbo Political Stakeholders Assembly,  threw its weight behind it.

The alliance comprises  former governor of Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Senator Ben Obi, Dr ABC Nwosu, S.N Okeke,   wife of the PDP presidential candidate, Mrs Jennifer Douglas Abubakar  and Mrs Margaret Obi,  wife of PDP Vice Presidential candidate.

In a statement by the group’s Chairman, Chief S N Okeke, a one-time chairman of the Police Service Commission under the Obasanjo Presidency, the group expressed confidence in the capacity of Atiku/Obi ticket to end mass poverty, grow well paying jobs, diversify the  economy and, most importantly, restructure the nation.

“We find the Atiku policy document progressive in conception, compelling in vision and actionable given its specific details, timelines and implementation schedule”, the group further averred that “apart from the well articulated policy document that has the capacity to radically transform the nation’s economic and social landscape for the better”, the group is “impressed by the track records of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi as ‘broad-minded’ Nigerian patriots who will be fair and just to all irrespective of ethnic, regional, gender or class orientation,” it stated.

Urging the PDP Presidential ticket to regard its policy and programme on restructuring not as a mere campaign mantra but an article of faith and binding social contract with the Nigerian people which should be delivered in a timely, well structured and consensual fashion,  the group declared that “it will deploy its considerable human and material resources, leverage on its extensive network of support across Igboland and the whole nation, and partner with like-minded patriotic women and community based organizations to ensure the victory of the Atiku-Obi ticket in the 2019 Presidential election”.

Other leading members of the group are AVM C E Umenwaliri, Chief Sam Nkire, Chief Rex Onyeabor, General C R U Ihekire, Chief Coleman Uba,  Prof Uka Ezenwe and many other prominent figures.

  • Presidency, Atiku clash over Buhari’s alleged insensitivity

The Presidency yesterday faulted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, over claims that President Muhammadu Buhari was insensitive to have failed to attend the burial of the 19 military victims of Boko Haram or send Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to represent him.

A reliable Presidency source said that president Buhari viewed the death of the soldiers as a national loss, which made him to visit Maiduguri to console the troops and the state government.

He said, “We have read the hypocritical press release by Atiku Abubakar, accusing the government of Muhammadu Buhari of insensitivity by the failure of the president or the vice president to attend the burial of the 19 military victims of Boko Haram. The loss of the gallant soldiers, as President Buhari has said is a national loss, on account of which he went to Maiduguri where he condoled the government and people of Borno State, addressed the troops at Maimalari Barracks as well as visited the convalescing gallant soldiers. This was a clear case of sensitive and responsible leadership,” the source said.

Speaking earlier on the funeral held last Friday for the departed soldiers in Abuja, the PDP presidential flag-bearer had accused President Buhari of being insensitive to the plights of the soldiers.

Atiku in a statement had said, “Today, I saw the pictures of the funeral of the officers and men of the 157 Task Force battalion of the Nigerian Army based in Metele and who were killed by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists and my heart went out to the men, their families and to our entire armed forces. May their souls rest in peace and may God grant their families fortitude at such a trying time.

“I am further pained that neither the President or his vice were in attendance at the funeral and that the Federal Government did not send a high powered delegation to represent the government at the funeral. This is sad and totally unacceptable. This is beyond politics. This touches our shared humanity. What would it cost for the President to take a day and fulfil his role as head of state by attending the funeral of such men of honour and valour? The sad part of it is that a day before their funeral, President Buhari took time out of his busy schedule to host Nollywood stars at the Presidential Villa.”

But the presidency source pointed out that neither Atiku nor Obasanjo during their administration in 2001 visited or paid tribute to soldiers killed that year. He said, “On the other hand however, when a similar number of troops (19 soldiers) were abducted and killed in October, 2001, neither he (Atiku Abubakar) or his boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo paid any tributes, not to talk of visiting the grieving family members of the martyred soldiers. Instead, they sent additional troops who rounded up the people of the town, and authorized an indiscriminate shooting as reprisals.”

It recalled that the BBC at that time reported that “In four ethnic-Tiv villages in Benue, soldiers rounded up and killed over 200 unarmed civilians. Zaki Biam, a town of about 20,000 people, was completely destroyed. According to eyewitnesses, the source said that the military team came in eight armoured cars. They came to Anyiin first where they were said to have summoned all the villagers to Gbeji public square, claiming that they had an urgent message for them. As soon as the villagers were gathered, the troops asked all the women and children to leave and then opened fire on the men, killing 100.

“At another village, the village head, a blind old man who is uncle to the former army chief, General Victor Malu, was killed alongside his wife. Their bodies were burnt inside the house.” A BBC correspondent in Nigeria, Dan Isaacs, reported from Zaki Biam that “they have destroyed every single building. Everything is burned out—walls are still standing but everything has been gutted. They came in and shelled buildings. They shot buildings with rocket propelled grenades—there are bullet holes all around.”

  • Youths for Atiku group opens secretariat

Youths for Atiku (YOFA) the youth campaign group for the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has  unveiled its National Secretariat and campaign vehicle in Abuja.
The event held on Saturday attracted YOFA executives, zonal, state, LGA and unit coordinators, as well as group members and Atiku supporters nationwide.
YOFA’S National Coordinator Chimaeze Ogoegbunam in his address  said  said the group is determined to continue to use all medium possible to mobilize youths across the nation to vote for Abubakar as President in the forthcoming general elections.
” I must commend members of this group across the nation for their selfless efforts in promoting our principal since this journey started. It is the hard work of members of our team that changed the narrative on social media which in turn led to him clinching the party’s ticket. Our members are generally looking for what they can do for their nation and not what the nation can do for them.”
Spokesperson of the group  Beauty Yahawah in her speech said “we are not lazy youths, we can drive the political scene positively to the direction that is most beneficial to us.”
” We have been working for our Principal prior to his victory in the party’s primary election, and are not tired of working… It is on this note that we officially present our national campaign secretariat, where we will be driving Young Nigerians across the nation to do the needful and work for the victory of our principal, Alhaji Atiku Abukakar. We have also provided branded vehicles.”
Stressing  the need to “get Nigeria working again”,  YOFA stated that the current situation in the country is not where it should be.
Dignitaries at the event include Hon. Oladimeji Fabiyi, Deputy Director of Support Groups, Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr. Ahmed Adamu, SSA to Atiku Abubakar on Youths and Strategy and  Mohammed Atiku-Abubakar, Patron of the group, Shehu Atiku-Abubakar.
  • Sign Electoral Amendment Bill now, Atiku, Ezekwesili tell Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari is under intense pressure to sign the controversial Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill into law.

Presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar and the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili yesterday joined those urging the President to have a rethink on his decision not to sign the document.

Both candidates spoke at the secretariat of the Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar National Peace Committee (NPC) in Abuja after signing the pact for all presidential candidates to make the 2019 hitch-free.

President Buhari last Friday returned the bill to the National Assembly without appending his signature. He told the lawmakers that his decision was in the best national interest.

It was the fourth time the President would return the bill after its passage by the Senate and the House of Representatives over what he observed as fundamental flaws.

House of Representatives Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila blamed the flaws in the bill on the National Assembly’s legal department.

To Atiku and Mrs. Ezekwesili, the President will be demonstrating his sincerity to conducting free and fair elections next year by signing the bill.

Atiku, a former vice president, expressed concern about the forthcoming elections, adding that the only way to ensure a free and fair polls is for the government to be fair to all political parties and stakeholders.

The PDP candidate vowed to play by the rules and remain committed to free, fair and credible elections.

His words: “We are committed to free, peaceful, fair and credible elections and we have always said that and we believe in that. I am a democrat. I was never converted. I fought the military to return this country to a democracy.

“However, the best way to guarantee peace in any election or any human interaction is to ensure manifest justice to all concerned.

“I am delighted that President Muhammadu Buhari has agreed to sign this peace accord. But we want to appeal to him to also sign the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill. Mr. President needs to understand that as long as he refuses to sign this bill, we will have doubts that this government is thoroughly committed to free, fair and credible elections.”

Gen. Abdulsalami apologised on behalf of the main opposition PDP for being absent at the Tuesday signing of the peace pact, stressing the commitment of everyone to the peaceful conduct of elections in 2019.

He said: “We are here to sign the peace accord. I must apologise for the PDP for not being able to attend that ceremony. In order to counter the saying that the PDP boycotted this signing of the peace accord, I spoke to the PDP presidential candidate and party officials in order to disabuse the minds of our people and to make Nigerians aware that everybody involved in this project cares for peace and wants a peaceful election.

“It was not only PDP that was not there yesterday (Tuesday). One or two parties were also not there.”

PDP’s National Chairman Uche Secondus also signed a portion of the peace accord document.

Mrs Ezekwesili, after signing the pact, urged President Buhari to sign the Electoral Amendment Bill without delay.

At the ceremony was the Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Richard Young.

Dr. Ezekwesili said the President cannot rush to sign the peace accord and still refuse to sign the Electoral Amendment Bill 2018.

She said: “The first thing that the President needs to do in order to build trust among all candidates is to sign the Electoral Amendment Bill 2018 into an Act.

“Because he has not done that, I find it very strange that he quickly was at the event yesterday (Tuesday) to sign the peace accord.

“It is contradictory. He needs to be exemplary in all the things that he does. He cannot confuse the system by taking one measure that mill out another measure. That is not the way to go,” the former Education minister said.

On why she did not sign the agreement on Tuesday, Mrs. Ezekwesili said there was no communication and could not have been at an event when she had no communication.

Speaking earlier, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah apologised for the inability of some candidates to sign the agreement on Tuesday, even as he maintained that the NPC had at its disposal, documentary evidence of the invitation of all candidates.

He said: “Our doors are open and we are really very sorry for whatever may have happened, but we have documentary evidence that we did send out our communication to the offices of all the 91 political parties and we have evidence that our correspondences were received.”

The peace accord document, read by the Director of the Kukah Centre, Fr. Atta Barkindo, stipulates that political parties pledge to run issue-based campaigns at national, state and local government levels.

“In this, we have pledged to refrain from campaigns that will involve religious incitement, ethnic or tribal profiling, both by ourselves and by all agents acting in their names; party, any public statements, pronouncements, declarations or speeches that have the capacity to incite any form of violence, before, during and after the elections.”

It reads in part: “We, the undersigned presidential candidates of the under-Iisted political parties for the forthcoming elections in February 2019 have attended a one-day Conference in Abuja under the auspices of the NPC.

“In the course of the Conference, we listened and discussed extensively on the need to ensure that we politicians create a favourable and conducive environment for the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in 2019.

    “Furthermore, we discussed the theme of Trust as a key ingredient in the conduct of our affairs. In the end, we have resolved to adopt the same principles that guided the very successful 2015 elections and therefore commit ourselves to the following;

“To commit ourselves and political parties to the monitoring of the adherence to this Accord by a National Peace Committee made up of respected statesmen and women, traditional and religious leaders.

“To support all institutions of government, including INEC and the security agencies, to act and be seen to act with impartiality

“To forcefully and publicly speak out against provocative utterances and oppose all acts of electoral violence whether perpetuated by our supporters and/or opponents.”

  • APC tackles Atiku over late signing of peace pact

FORMER Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in next year’s election Atiku Abubakar has displayed he was not committed to a peaceful conduct of the polls by failing to show up at the signing of the peace accord in Abuja on Tuesday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday.

The party said Atiku’s decision to “finally and reluctantly” sign the pact yesterday was a face-saving measure.

APC’s National Public Secretary Lanre Issa-Oniru said in a statement that Atiku’s initial refusal was a clear reminder of the threat of the party in August to deploy all means possible to win the 2019 elections, pointing out that the claim of communication gap as his reason for not appearing for signing ceremony on Tuesday was “hogwash”.

The statement reads: “It is obvious that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar tried to avoid signing the national peace accord ahead of the country’s 2019 general elections.

“To all discerning Nigerians, the PDP and Atiku’s claim of a “communication lapse” as reason for their no-show at Tuesday’s formal signing ceremony is hogwash, as the peace committee duly and formally invited the PDP and Atiku, like other candidates and political parties contesting the 2019 Elections.

“Atiku’s eventual decision to sign the peace deal is clearly a face-saving move following widespread condemnation that greeted his initial refusal to agree to the peace deal. We, however, must not lose sight of the dangerous and ominous signs the PDP and Atiku have inadvertently shown Nigerians in the lead up to the elections.

“Again, this brings to the fore, PDP’s open declaration in August this year that the party will deploy all ‘means, schemes, shenanigans in all ramification and magnitude’ to manipulate the 2019 election.”

The APC reiterates that security and other relevant agencies must be on the high alert to check this dangerous threat posed by the PDP’s planned actions for the general elections.

It went on: “In 2019 and beyond, the votes of the electorate must count and the will of the electorate must prevail. We must stand against and resist plans by retrogressive elements, now nested in the PDP and their agents to disrupt elections through violence and other undemocratic practices.

“For signing the 2019 election national peace accord, the party affirms the commitment of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government to a free and fair electoral process.  The APC government has an abiding pledge towards participatory, peaceful, credible and transparent elections.”

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has condemned the  House of Representatives Speaker of Yakubu Dogara, for calling  the Social Investment Programme (SIP) a vote-buying scheme.

The organisation said the comment was not only irresponsible, but an insult to beneficiaries of the initiative.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, the BMO said it was unfortunate and shocking that Dogara could descend so low just to score political points.

The statement reads: “Here is a man, who presides over an arm of the National Assembly which approved a budgetary allocation of N500 billion for 2016 and N400 billion for 2017 respectively, for this same social welfare scheme.

“Speaker Dogara and his colleagues in the Senate are also aware that all the initiatives, including the very popular TraderMoni, began in 2016 after a total sum of N110bn was released.

“Cash disbursement was done throughout the previous years and it is on record that the National Assembly was even keen on monitoring compliance of the SIPs
