Our positions on Atiku-led coalition takeover of ADC, by APC, PDP, others

The  All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) would not fly in the 2027 polls.

Prominent PDP chieftains, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a few APC members, defected to the party on Wednesday in Abuja and took over the leadership.

Dismissing ADC as a party invaded by selfish, egocentric defectors, APC said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, that it is now “a roll call of Nigeria’s me-or-nothing politicians.”

Also, the PDP said in a statement by the Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, that it is not bothered about the coalition.

It is preoccupied with preparations for the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and the National Convention.

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 poll, Peter Obi, explained his participation in the coalition talks and his presence at the unveiling.

He said only a collaborative effort can tackle the ruling party in the next general election.

However, the former Anambra State governor remained non-committal to the call on coalition members to join ADC.

Taking a swipe at the party, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike said the new ADC leaders were selfish politicians.

PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) member Chief Olabode George chided the defectors, saying that ADC is a rolling stone driven by selfish ambition.

ADC can’t defend public interest, says APC

Faulting the adoption of ADC by the pro-Atiku coalition members, Morka said: “It was an unveiling of a coalition of hoaxers and self-obsessed merchants of vendetta, a roll call of Nigeria’s me-or-nothing politicians, who equate their selfish interest with the interest of Nigerians, who cannot bear to be out of the corridors of power and patronage, who are desperate to grab power for themselves by guile and subterfuge, who lay claim to an immoral birthright to power, even while draped in odious record of betrayal of public trust, and rapacious public service.”

Picking holes in the acceptance speech of the ADC interim national chairman, Senator David Mark, he said it lacked substance and depth.

Morka stressed: “The speech delivered by Senator David Mark, the alleged National Chairman of ADC, was disgracefully vacant, without substance or purpose, nothing but stitches of untruths, diatribe, and regurgitated and baseless allegations against the APC-led administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“From beginning to end, Senator Mark said nothing about the purpose of the so-called coalition other than a loud declaration of desperation for power.

“What value does the coalition bring to Nigerians? Why should any Nigerian be concerned about a coalition of a bunch of egotistical maniacs for whom power and patronage are the oxygen on which their lives depend?

“One would have expected that, after months of vacillating between the devil and the deep blue sea, in search of a host platform, Senator Mark and his co-travellers would take Nigerians seriously enough by telling them what their coalition would do differently regarding the administration’s bold economic and sectoral policy reforms.

“What key alternative policy approaches would the coalition implement, and with what prospects of success compared to the high value and transformative impact of the administration’s reform policies?

“What exactly is the philosophical or ideological leaning of the coalition or its new party, aside from desperation for power at all costs, by all means necessary and unnecessary?

“Senator Mark’s speech was loud in its silence to these questions because he and his coalition partners are disgracefully clueless, without a care or concern about Nigeria and Nigerians, only filled with a wolfish quest for power for their own mendacious end.”

Morka said the Tinubu Administration is “delivering improved living conditions and benefits to Nigerians.”

He said President Tinubu, who is not disturbed by the activities of the coalition, is focused on using all available bricks to build a stronger, enduring and more prosperous nation.

Ologunagba: PDP has no official position yet

Ologunagba clarified that PDP has not directed any of its members to join ADC.

He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, the NWC states in clear terms that the PDP has not taken any official position on the issue of coalition.

“The PDP is for now focused on building and consolidating on attained unity, stability and strengthening of its structures and capacity to play its roles as the leading opposition Party determined to return to power in 2027.

“Our party is currently working conscientiously towards a successful National Convention, which will further revamp and reposition the PDP for the task ahead.”

The publicity secretary reiterated the view of the Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Senator Bala Mohammed, that the party can only work with willing opposition groups without surrendering its independence or strength.

Ologunagba said the PDP will only work with others without surrendering its brand, adding that the party can win the 2027 elections on its own.

Why I support coalition, by Obi

Obi explained that the decision to join the coalition was not made lightly.

He tweeted: “Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the ADC for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola serving as the National Secretary.

“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first.

“This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward.

“No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls, even when those bridges are uneasy.”

Abure’s LP faction to Obi: resign

The Julius Abure-led faction of the LP  issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Obi to resign from the party over his involvement in the coalition.

Factional LP National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh reiterated the party’s rejection of the coalition, describing it as a gathering of “recycled, desperate and frustrated politicians”.

He said in a statement: “Former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi, has received a 48-hour ultimatum to formally resign his membership of the Labour Party, having formally joined the coalition party.

“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him.

“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition, and therefore, any of our members who are part of the coalition are given 48 hours to formally resign their membership of the party.

“Labour Party is not available for people with a dual agenda, people with a deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one party and another leg elsewhere.

“People who, in the morning, claim to be in the Labour Party and in the evening are in the coalition.

“Nearly 70 per cent of the Nigerian population are youths who are tired of the old order, tired of gerontocrats deciding their fate.

“The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of is not what can be realised from what we are seeing in the coalition.

“These people are opportunistic politicians who are only interested in relaunching themselves into the circle of power — people who are desperate to continue holding on to power.”

Nenadi LP faction dismisses resignation ultimatum

The LP faction, led by Caretaker Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, said no ultimatum was issued to Obi by the party.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media to Usman, Ken Asogwa, the party said Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts has its full backing.

It said: “For the avoidance of doubt, the leadership of the Labour Party, on May 26, 2025, publicly declared its full support for Mr. Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts aimed at creating a robust political alternative to rescue Nigeria from the disastrous misrule of the APC. That position has not changed.

“We wish to reaffirm that Mr. Peter Obi’s participation in the coalition activities, including the ADC unveiling, was done with the full knowledge, approval, and support of the Labour Party leadership.

“The individuals claiming to have issued an ultimatum to Mr. Obi are political jesters with no legitimate standing in the Labour Party.

“They are neither recognised by the party nor by the law, having long been sacked by the Supreme Court of Nigeria – the highest court in the land – and suspended from the party for their serial acts of indiscipline and anti-party activities.

“It is the remnants of the disorder and mess left behind by these impostors that the current leadership under Senator Nenadi Usman continues to clean.

“Therefore, members of the public, and especially the media, are urged to disregard the distractions and mischief from these discredited elements.

“For clarity, the only legitimate and authoritative source of information regarding the official position of the Labour Party on any matter remains the office of Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party.”

    Atiku, Mark selfish, says George

George, who spoke on television, chided Atiku and Mark for a lack of principle, saying that they are driven by personal ambition.

He said: “I’m very disappointed. I must be frank with you. If your house is leaking and you are strong enough, you remain in that house. You call people to fix it. You don’t run out and become a tenant somewhere else.

“PDP is very healthy. We have resolved our crisis, and on June 30th, we resurrected. That was the turning point. We are now in a new beginning, a redemption.

“They benefited immensely from the PDP. Now, because things didn’t go their way, they jumped ship. That’s not how we were brought up in the military or in any principled organisation.

“You think the Nigerian electorate is stupid? We will meet on the field. Let them go. I’m a general. If I have ten men and eight are loyal, I’ll go to war.”

George also cast doubt on the opposition coalition’s ability to agree on a single candidate, saying that ego and ambition would get in the way.

He said: “Who will step down for whom? Atiku for Obi? Obi for Atiku? That’s their business. It’s all about personal ambition, not national interest.

“There is no part of this country where you won’t find PDP. These others are still forming. How long will it take to build real grassroots support?

“You can’t dance on the graves of the founding fathers of PDP and expect to succeed.”

Wike: New ADC leaders are failed politicians

Wike insisted that the new ADC leaders are failed and expired politicians, adding that they also lack credibility and the capacity to challenge President Tinubu in 2027.

Taking on the coalition leaders one by one, Wike said they have nothing to offer to Nigerians.

Wike described the coalition as a “desperate fallback” for political figures who failed to gain control of the PDP

He said: “There is no coalition. The opposition has decimated itself. The only party that can, if properly organised, challenge this government is the PDP.”

He accused Mark of trying to hijack the PDP leadership before becoming interim chairman of the ADC.

Wike said: “I heard David Mark said they want to rescue Nigeria. Nigerians are not happy. But the man was Senate President for eight years, and Nigerians were happy?

“There was no single project in Otukpo. Not one. He was flying in a helicopter to Otukpo. Nigerians were not angry then, but they are angry now?”

He said Mark, as leader of the PDP in his area, lost elections as his daughter, who ran under the APC, won the House of Representatives.

Wike added: “Amaechi was a minister. He took Chinese loans and made Nigeria so much indebted to China. So, Nigerians were happy then?

“When you were in power, Nigerians were happy, but the moment you were no longer in power, Nigerians are no longer happy.

“I saw Sirika. What happened to Air Nigeria? Nigerians were happy then?

“When they went to APC in 2013 and took over power, Nigerians were happy, but no longer happy today?

“Was it under Tinubu’s government that banditry came? What is he doing? To solve the problems he met.

“I read what Malami wrote. It was so shameful. He was AGF. What did he do? What was his contribution to resolving the security challenges?

“Tambuwal was Speaker for four years. What did he do to make Nigerians not angry? He was governor for eight years. What did he do? What kind of politics are we playing?”

Wike added that the former Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, only moved to the ADC because he had fallen out with his godfather, Senator Bukola Saraki.

He also criticised Ovation publisher, Dele Momodu, saying that he is politically irrelevant.

Wike stressed: “Dele Momodu was never my friend. He claimed he ran for president—he didn’t get a single vote, and now he’s in this coalition.”

The minister accused Atiku of chronic political opportunism.

He said: “Atiku was in the PDP, left for the AC, returned to the PDP, then joined the APC, came back to the PDP, and now he’s with the ADC

“Every time, he jumps ship. They’re just looking for where they can be in charge.”

He questioned their credibility, arguing that their criticisms of the government were simply bitterness over personal losses.

He said: “They keep saying Nigerians are angry. Say the truth: you were defeated here. Don’t project your frustration onto the public.”

Wike challenged the coalition figures to measure their records against his achievements in public office.

He said: “If I leave as minister today, I can confidently say, ‘This is what I accomplished.’ Let any of them show what they’ve done.”

He said former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s involvement in the coalition was driven by disappointment over being sidelined.

Wike queried: “ If the president hadn’t dumped him, would he be part of any coalition?”

Atiku, Mark, Tambuwal, Secondus, Egbu, others head for ADC

    • ‘PDP now shadow of old self ‘

A major step towards the battle for power in 2027 is likely to be taken today in Abuja.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and some senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figures are expected to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which they have embraced as the vehicle for their coalition.

Sources said the plan was perfected at a meeting yesterday under the aegis of Concerned PDP Elders.

The meeting took place at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

The ADC will be adopted with like-minded politicians in the National Opposition Coalition Group (NOCG), it was gathered.

A source at the meeting said: “We have lost hope of rescuing PDP.

“We have decided to move to ADC for a national coalition for the 2027 general election.

“PDP has been hijacked. We have come to realise that a committee, headed by a former President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, set up to serve as an arbiter, is compromised.

“Attempts to register a new party appear to be a long shot.”

The source explained that the plan to register the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) was thwarted by the “sudden emergence” of the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA).

With the two associations sharing the same acronym, the prospect of registration becomes complex.

It was gathered that the initial move to consider the Social Democratic Party (SDP) by all coalition partners was unsuccessful, despite the defection to the party by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

“The party was infiltrated and our plans were frustrated.”

The source explained that the coalition members had no choice but to opt for ADC.

The source added: “The ADC is now the coalition party, which should be unveiled on Wednesday (today).”

Apart from Atiku, PDP leaders who attended yesterday’s meeting were a former President of the Senate, Sen. David Mark; Sen. Aminu Tambuwal; former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido; a former Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi; Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Senator Abdul Ningi.

Others were a former Benue Governor, Gabriel Suswam; a former Cross River Governor, Liyel Imoke; ex-PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus; a former  National Women leader of PDP, Mrs. Josephine Anenih and Hajia Inna Ciroma.

Also present were a former Rivers State Governor, Celestine Omehia; a former presidential adviser Sen. Ben Obi; ex-Minister of Education Dr. Sam Egwu; a former Niger Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu and a former PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan.

Yesterday’s move came 24 hours after the PDP organs, which hitherto were at each other’s throats, met at the secretariat and took a common decision to adopt Sen. Samuel Anyawu as National Secretary.

But what appeared to be a united front for the party was shattered by yesterday’s meeting of the “Concerned Leaders”.

These leaders did not attend the Monday meeting at the secretariat.

The PDP had strongly declared that it would not be part of any coalition, of which Atiku is the proponent.

Since he announced the move towards coalition, Atiku had not been seen at any PDP gathering.

‘PDP now shadow of old self’

Rising from the meeting, the chieftains repudiated the PDP, lamenting that it is now “a shadow of its old self.”

Mark, who read the communique, explained that the meeting was organised to discuss the disturbing condition of the party.

He noted that since its defeat at the 2023 polls and the exit of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu as national chairman, the PDP has never been the same again.

Mark lamented that the inability of PDP leadership to lead the party in accordance with its constitution, rules and regulations has led to chaos and indiscipline.

He said: “The vision of the founding fathers for which the party was established and the role it played in restoring Nigeria as a stable and united country and a key player on the regional, continental, and global stage has been washed away just as our roles as the leader of the black race is now overtaken by smaller and less endowed countries.”

Mark added: “The meeting encourages all well-meaning PDP members and other patriotic Nigerians to join the coalition.

“All coalition partners must be united on the issues of national unity, democracy, national security, national economy, and the political will to stamp out corruption embedded in our institutions.

“The coalition partners are to work out the modalities of winning all elections, taking into consideration local and national peculiarities.”

  • I didn’t betray Atiku by working for Buhari — Garba Shehu

I didn’t betray Atiku by working for Buhari — Garba Shehu

Former presidential spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, has dismissed allegations of betraying former Vice President Atiku Abubakar by accepting an appointment under President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Speaking ahead of the launch of his memoir titled “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience”, scheduled for public presentation on July 9, Shehu clarified that his decision to join Buhari’s media team was not a betrayal but a product of circumstance.

Shehu, who had served as Atiku’s spokesperson before the 2014 merger that birthed the All Progressives Congress (APC), explained that after Atiku and other aspirants lost the APC presidential ticket, their media campaign assets—including his—were consolidated and donated to Buhari’s campaign.

“All the aspirants, including Atiku, Rochas Okorocha, Kwankwaso, and the late Sam Nda-Isaiah, contributed their media assets to the Buhari campaign. I was part of that pool,” he said. “The President had the grace to appoint me as campaign media director. That’s how I came on board.”

Shehu also addressed why he refrained from attacking Atiku during his eight-year tenure under Buhari. He said loyalty and discretion were essential in public office.

“If I had attacked Atiku, how would Buhari trust me? He would assume I could do the same to him one day. I learned from history. Even during the fallout between Abiola and IBB, did you hear the presidential spokesman vilify Abiola?” he said.

The former Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) president stated that his forthcoming book not only documents his experience with the Buhari administration but also serves as a resource for aspiring journalists and public relations professionals.

“The book ‘According to the President—Lessons From a Presidential Spokesman’s Experience’ is not a personal biography but a guidebook written to inspire students who aspire to have a career in journalism and public relations.

“It is also an authoritative account of what President Buhari did with his eight years in office.

“This book tries to build on what Femi Adesina and several others have done, which is to authoritatively document the achievements and some of the historic decisions of the Buhari administration in eight years. It brings President Buhari up close: how did he govern? What did he eat? And the clothes he wears for some occasions?”

He added that the book is analytical, informative, and academic in its approach and comes packed with personal anecdotes and shared experiences of a cross-spectrum of reporters and editors in dealing with the author in his work as presidential spokesman.

He maintained that it was not possible for the 260-page book to explain the significant work, policies, and programmes undertaken by the administration in its eight years. He argued that Buhari brought the nation to a new pinnacle in the efforts to lay the foundation for a self-reliant Nigeria.

This, according to him, includes bringing a culture of personal integrity and setting new benchmarks in transparency with the institution of the Treasury Single Account, Tax Identification Number (TIN), BVN, IPPS, Whistleblower, the usage of NIN, and various other transparency-enhancing schemes.

Atiku, Mark hold closed-door meeting with PDP leaders

Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President Senator David Mark on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with select PDP leaders in Abuja.

The high-level meeting, which began around 2 p.m., took place at the Borno/Anambra/Cross River Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

Although the agenda was not made public, the gathering has sparked fresh speculation over political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources said that Atiku and Mark may be involved in discussions concerning two alternative political platforms, the African Democratic Alliance (ADA) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), reportedly being considered by an anti-Tinubu coalition for 2027.

Prominent PDP figures present at the meeting include former PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus; former Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi).

Others in attendance were Senator Ben Obi, former PDP National Women Leader Josephine Anenih, former National Organising Secretary Senator Austin Akobundu, ex-National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan, and former National Youth Leader Abdullahi Maibasira.

Both Atiku and Mark have maintained a strong presence at recent PDP functions, further fueling talks of a strategic political move as 2027 approaches.

Education key to unlocking Nigeria’s potential, says Atiku

    • …we are building children with skills to survive in society – Imansuangbon

Former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku on Sunday said that education is the master key that will unlock Nigeria’s huge potential and set the country on the path to full socio-economic development.

He emphasised that education was crucial for national unity, stability, and development, noting that an educated citizenry was less prone to being manipulated by divisive elements.

Atiku noted that the best investment any government or individual could make was human capital development.

Speaking at the Graduation and Prize-giving Day of Pacesetters’ Schools where 205 students graduated, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), believed that adequate funding and a curriculum promoting entrepreneurship are essential for achieving this goal.

He also announced that he will return to University after retirement from politics, highlighting his passion for education and human capital development.

Atiku, who is the founder of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), recalled how his passion for education led to establishment of Nursery/primary school and later secondary school and a University.

He commended the founder of Pacesetters’ Schools Abuja, Barr Kenneth Imansuangbon for his commitment to human capital development by establishing standard primary and secondary schools offering quality education for young Nigerians.

The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressed that adequate funding and a curriculum promoting entrepreneurship are essential for achieving this goal.

Abubakar also stressed the importance of education in his own life, stating that it has made him who he is today.

He said, “I’d like to congratulate my friend (Barr. Kenneth Imansuangbon) for investing in human development. There’s no better investment than education, as it empowers individuals to become engineers, doctors, or whatever profession they choose. I commend the Pacesetters Schools’ noble cause and challenge them to expand from nursery, primary and secondary school to university.

“I congratulate the graduating students, and I’m thrilled to see some of my own graduates among them. I thank the Chairman for inviting me to this historic event, which aligns with my passion for education. Even in retirement, I look forward to returning to university.”

The former Vice President compared the United States Peace Corps to Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), sharing a personal experience from 1961 when Peace Corps American teachers were deployed to his secondary school in Northern Nigeria, filling a gap left by departing British teachers.

This, he said, significantly impacted his education, adding that the experience inspired him to adopt an American curriculum in his schools.

In his remarks, Chairman of the School, Barr. Kenneth Imansuangbon, emphasised the importance of education in shaping individuals and society.

He noted that Pacesetters’ Schools aim to produce independent-minded individuals who can create their own opportunities rather than waiting for white-collar jobs.

Barr. Imansuangbon also stressed that the schools’ goal is to refine students and equip them with the skills necessary to make a positive impact in society.

Lawmaker representing Abia Central in the National Assembly, Senator Augustine Akobundu; wife of the governor of Zamfara State, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal; former National Chairman of Labour Party (LP), Dan Nwanyanwu among others were among dignitaries at the event.

Besides the graduation of the pupils, the event also featured a special award to the mother of the chairman of the School, Mrs Elizabeth Imansuangbon.

Baba Lekki sings Ketekete for Atiku

To the Agindingbi Town Hall on this dismal and wet late June morning where Baba Lekki, the famous contrarian and veteran hell raiser, is holding a seminar for politically displaced people, PDP. Ever since the president of the republic dismissed the motley crowd of political chancers hankering after his job as “political IDPs” tongues have been wagging as to whether IDP was the same as PDP and whether a lethal combination of the two meant DOD (Dead on Delivery). In a litigious society where litigation itself had been known to have been sued for not being litigative enough, one must proceed with caution in these matters. This morning with a fretful and rather nervous Okon in tow, the old man cut a figure of scholarly sobriety and legal gravitas. He had brought with him maps, sketches and political memorabilia to prove that the opposition had deliberately committed suicide which amounted to voluntary self-elimination.  But before things could get on an even keel, a huge disturbance emanated from the back of the hall which was packed full with miscreants, scoundrels and political Oblomovs.

“Oga mi I never chop for three days, abi na so so politics we go chop? I no be PDP, I be EDP”, a rotund man with huge biceps screamed from the back.

“And what is that?” an irate freelance thug demanded. With his mahogany frame and scarified face, it was obvious he was not a person to mess around with.

“Economically Deprived People”, the rotund man shouted.

“Ha, I see. He is one of these Obidient people. He has been brought to disturb baba. If he doesn’t shut his mouth, I will seal it for him”, the mahogany man threatened as he began hauling a huge brown amulet out of his pocket. Things seemed to have simmered down considerably after that.

“As I was saying,” the old man began, “ADA is Brought In Dead. They are dead politicians disturbing the peace of the land, it will end in what the Yoruba people call ADANU or great loss”. The audience swooned at this great play on words with one of them hailing the old recidivist as a great genius lost to the world of native poetry.

“Baba, so what will become of a great man like Atiku? Na my in-law from Ilesha,” one man asked from the crowd with a funereal hiccup. Baba Lekki burst into a deranged smile.

“Foolish man, why you no warn your in-law when him dey climb Langbodo tree? I warned Atiku. I told him these foolish wazobia boys will take all his money and run away. Now, they have broken the camel’s back. Atiku don become Tinko meat. Nwon ti pa ketekete” (They have killed donkey!) The entire hall erupted in applause.

At this point, the old man began singing and dancing the ketekete classic to the great delight of the crowd.

  • Adamawa’s chieftaincy reform and the row over Atiku

The Adamawa State Government calls it an innocent step towards nurturing emirates and chiefdoms that are truly indigenous, but critics see it as a deliberate move to malign a prominent son of the soil, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The news broke in the evening of Tuesday, July 24, 2025 that Atiku had been stripped of his title of Waziri Adamawa; that is how the very first report put it.

The Waziri Adamawa is a highly revered title carrying responsibilities that have long placed Atiku next to the Adamawa Emirate paramount king, the Lamido Adamawa, in ranking and recognition.

That first and virtually all subsequent reports in the local newsmill placed Atiku strategically on the front burner, lifting the prominence of the story into national reckoning.

The hype had become so thick by the afternoon of Wednesday, June 25, 2025 that the government had to speak up, to try to explain that the story was really only an interpretation of a circular released days earlier by the state government which made no mention of either Atiku or anyone for that matter.

The circular, written and released on June 20, 2025 by the Permanent Secretary of Department of Chieftaincy Affairs in the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Adama Mamman, as addressed to emirates and chiefdoms, reads in part:

READ ALSO: My biggest challenges in office, by Dapo Abiodun

“Following the creation of new chiefdoms in the state by the Governor of Adamawa State, Rt Hon Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, I am directed to inform you that all kingmakers and council members in the state must be indigenes of their chiefdoms; eg all kingmakers and council members of Adamawa Emirate Council must be indigenes of Yola North, Yola South, Girei, Mayo-Belwa, and Song LGAs (which form the emirate); while those of Mubi Emirate Council must be indigenes of Mubi North and Mubi South.

“However, those appointed or conferred with only traditional titles are to maintain their status regardless of their local government of indigene.

“With this content of the circular, all kingmakers and council members who are not indigenes of their chiefdoms have been relieved of their appointments.”

Atiku Abubakar came prominently into the scene for many reasons; first because he simply happens to be prominent, more prominent by far than any of the emirs and chiefs in Adamawa State, and of course because of his affinity with Adamawa Emirate.

Although he hails from Jada, a town and local government area which falls under Ganye Emirate, he holds the very eminent council title and position of Wakili Adamawa in the Adamawa Emirate.

Atiku is however not the only well known personality with connection to the Adamawa Emirate who have been affected by the now controversial government circular.

The Adamawa Emirate is the foremost traditional institution in the state with many other prominent council members from outside the emirate who are affected by the new order.

They include a famous businessman Abdulkadir Aminu Mbamba who holds the title of Wali Adamawa, former chief judge of Adamawa State, Justice Nathan Musa who holds the title of Waziri Adamawa and former Adamawa Speaker James Barka who is the Magatakarda Adamawa.

The three hail from Hong local government area which was in Adamawa Emirate before December last year when Hong was carved out to stand as an autonomous chiefdom named Huba Chiefdom.

In other words, it is the creation of Huba Chiefdom, with headquarters in Hong, and to which Mbamba, Musa and Barka belong that has by the new order voided  their decision making status in the Adamawa Emirate.

For the records, Huba Chiefdom came to be in December 2024 when the state government created it among five chiefdoms and two emirates.

The other four chiefdoms are Gombi, Yungur, Madagali and Michika while the two emirates are Fufore and Maiha.

Our correspondent reports that Atiku became the public focus of the new circular by the Adamawa State Government because of the weight of his Waziri Adamawa status, a status that he is widely perceived to cherish greatly.

It is believed in Adamawa circles that the government would not have taken its decision if only for the sake of Atiku alone; if all had been well between the government and Atiku.

Importantly, all have not been well with Atiku and the government, personified in this case by the Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri.

A cold war has raged between Atiku and Fintiri for months now, years actually.

Neither of the two has publicly admitted the fact of the fight but evidences have been glaring to close observers.

Fintiri’s supporters would dismiss any suggestion that Atiku made Fintiri, as they would proclaim that Fintiri has no godfather in politics, but none could ignore certain roles that Atiku has played in Fintiri’s life since Fintiri became governor, such as in the aftermath of the 2023 election when Fintiri’s main challenger, Senator Aishatu Ahmed (Binani) was wrongfully declared winner and Fintiri who was by all legal considerations set to win became uneasy.

Despite the high likelihood that Fintiri was bound to be eventually declared winner of that election, the wrong and premature declaration of Binani by the now dismissed electoral commissioner Hudu Yunusa-Ari created anxiety in Fintiri’s circles and Atiku had to come out to warn INEC to toe the right path by concluding that election and declaring the right winner, which was eventually done.

That intervention by Atiku in April 2023 is incidentally the last known affinity between him and Fintiri.

The two appear to have acted at cross purposes since then, with both being known, for instance, to keep off any event involving the other.

Reasons advanced for this sum up to widening political differences born of personal ambitions, with Fintiri appearing to want to assert himself even if it runs contrary to Atiku’s perceived interests, such as Fintiri’s apparent romance with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Atiku’s political adversary.

This would be why Fintiri is being read in many quarters as targeting Atiku by the circular of his government.

The heat around Adamawa had boiled so fervently by the afternoon of Wednesday June 25, that the state Commissioner of Information, Iliya James called the media to try to dowse things.

“The Adamawa State Government wishes to categorically clarify that recent activities and reforms within the Traditional and Chieftaincy Affairs sector are not directed at any individual or group,” the commissioner said.

Stating the perspective of the government further, the commissioner told the newsmen who covered the briefing, “It has come to the government’s attention that certain narratives in the public space suggest that recent decisions concerning chieftaincy matters are politically motivated or aimed at specific persons.

“We firmly refute these claims. The government remains committed to upholding transparency, fairness, and due process in all traditional and administrative matters. The ongoing reviews are intended to improve coordination, resolve long-standing disputes, and promote unity within the traditional institutions, not to marginalize or punish any individual.”

According to him, in the system being reviewed, there are kingmakers, but there is no provision outlining the eligibility of council members.

“A person from Mubi may be appointed as a kingmaker in the Adamawa Emirate Council despite not being a resident of the Adamawa Emirate Council’s local government areas. This is one of the peculiarities that the new amendment tries to address,” he added.

The commissioner made the notable point that the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs that announced the new reforms states that people who were given titles under the current setup will continue to hold them; except that their kingmaker duties must be renounced so that the true indigenes of the local governments concerned can be selected as kingmakers.

This very part of the commissioner’s clarification of the government circular, the part that people with titles could keep the titles but relinquish their kingmaker duties, diluted what was initially understood that Atiku’s Waziri Adamawa title had been taken away.

If the commissioner could be taken as stating the incontrovertible position of the Adamawa State Government, it would mean that Atiku continues to be Waziri Adamawa under the Adamawa Emirate but would no longer be a member of the Emirate Council and would therefore be unable to influence how the emirate functions.

Atiku’s ambition has impacted negatively on Niger Delta, unity – Eradiri

A former President, Ijaw Youths Council Worldwide, Engr. Udengs Eradiri, has called on erstwhile Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to jettison his presidential ambition.

Eradiri told Atiku that his serial failed bids to occupy Aso Rock Villa had done untold damage to the development of the Niger Delta and destroyed the reputation of some of the respected leaders from the region.

Besides, Eradiri, who is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), argued that Atiku’s insensitive and desperate ambition to become President was threatening the peace of the country.

Explaining how Atiku’s Presidential ambition had negatively impacted Niger Delta, he recalled that the late former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was humiliated, suffered and died because of his relationship with Atiku.

Eradiri, a former Commissioner for Youths and later Environment in Bayelsa, also noted that a former Delta Governor, Chief Onanefe Ibori ‘s political alliance with Atiku was part of the reason he was thrown into jail.

He alleged Atiku was part of those, who teleguided the suspended Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara with deceptive assurances that worsened his ordeal.

Eradiri recalled that at the buildup to the 2023 election, Atiku’s inordinate ambition and his desperation plunged Delta State into huge debts using former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to bankroll his campaigns in exchange for Vice-presidential ticket.

He observed that Atiku’s ambition destroyed the PDP and attempted to destabilise the country by ignoring the zoning arrangement of the presidency between the north and the south.

Eradiri said Atiku demonstrated the highest level of desperation, unreasonableness and lack of patriotism in 2023 when he cornered  the Presidential ticket of the PDP to retain power in the North despite former President Muhammadu Buhari eight years in office.

Eradiri said: “I want to call on Alhaji Abubakar to demonstrate statesmanship by jettisoned  his ambition to be President of Nigeria. This call is not political. It is borne out of unbiased assessment of the damage his ambition has caused the people of the Niger Delta.

The late former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha suffered and died because of his association with Atiku. Former Delta State Governor, Chief Onanefe Ibori went to jail because of his association with Atiku.

“Delta State is indebted financially because of Okowa’s association with Atiku ‘s ambition. Sim Fubara of Rivers State was deceived by assurances from Atiku and his men. The Nigerian political space in recent time has suffered untold damage because of Atiku.

“A period that should be the turn of the South after the North had done two terms, but you can see that Atiku is still insisting on becoming the President and today opposition has been allianated because of Atiku.

“The PDP is in tatters today because of Atiku. Therefore, it is clear that Atiku’s ambition is bringing untold hardship especially for us in the Niger Delta. It is creating the problem that is destabilising the Nigerian polity.

“Every society needs a virile opposition for the ruling party to sit up. But Atiku’s ambition has dealt a deadly blow on PDP, which many people relied upon to provide this opposition.”

Eradiri further told Atiku that the country would be more peaceful and the rising tension will also be toned down if he supports the South to complete their tenure.

Olisa Metuh confirms Omokri’s role in hiring Segun Showunmi as Atiku’s spokesperson

Former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, has backed Reno Omokri’s claim that he was responsible for hiring Segun Showunmi as spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking with newsmen via a phone call, Metuh confirmed Omokri’s statement, stating, “It happened in 2018 when I was still active in politics. Reno called me to recommend someone for Atiku. I initially thought of Deji Adeyanju, but he had left the PDP. I had encouraged him to form an advocacy group instead.”

Metuh added that he eventually suggested Segun Showunmi. “I remembered Segun and recommended him to Reno. I told Segun to call Reno, and he did. That was it.”

He stressed that there was no confusion regarding how Showunmi emerged as Atiku’s spokesperson, saying, “There is absolutely no controversy about that.”

Before ending the conversation, Metuh remarked, “I don’t think Reno and Segun are still in the PDP anymore, so there is really no controversy there.”

Omokri, a former presidential aide to Goodluck Jonathan, had earlier revealed on ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast that he was instrumental in hiring several aides for Atiku, including Showunmi.

He also stated, in a Facebook post, that he personally negotiated Showunmi’s salary during that time.

According to him, “If I am nothing at all, I am a meticulous record keeper. In May 2018, Olisa Metuh, the former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party, recommended Segun Showunmi for the role of spokesman to Waziri Atiku Abubakar.

“Mr. Metuh asked Segun Showunmi to send his resume (what we call a CV) to me. Thereafter, Olisa Metuh asked Segun Showunmi to contact me for a job interview.

“I spoke to Segun Showunmi from California and negotiated his salary with him. I thereafter informed Waziri Atiku Abubakar, and Segun Showunmi was announced as his spokesman on the terms I negotiated with him.

“If there is any controversy or if anybody is using foul language to deny the obvious truth, then I urge the media to contact Mr. Olisa Metuh, who is an eyewitness and who was the one who recommended Segun Showunmi to me for employment as Waziri Atiku’s spokesman.

“After he was employed, Mr. Segun Showunmi returned to Mr. Olisa Metuh to thank him for recommending him to me.

“I do not want to be forced to publish documentary evidence. I would rather not. But if I have to, then I can. I urge anyone wanting to deny the obvious to think twice. Again, I repeat that if I am nothing at all, at least I am a meticulous record keeper.”

2027: Atiku, El-Rufai, Amaechi move to register ADA

    • Amaechi’s loyalist writes INEC seeks approval
    • Mark, Obi, Malami, Aregbesola among promoters
    • It’s psychological warfare on Nigerians, says Keyamo

Opposition leaders led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and the immediate past Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai have finally called off their fraternization with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 election.

The group, Nigeria National Coalition Group (NNCG), yesterday opted to go solo by applying to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for registration as a new party.

All Democratic Alliance (ADA), as it wants to be known, has as its protem Chairman Chief Akin Anderson Rickets, Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) when Amaechi was Minister of Transportation.

Other notable politicians said to be part of ADA are Peter Obi, Aminu Tambuwal, John Oyegun, Rauf Aregbesola, Abubakar Malami, Babachir Lawal, Uche Secondus, Osita Chidoka and Nnenna Ukeje.

The decision to seek registration as a party was reached at a meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

INEC acknowledged receipt of the application yesterday.

Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo mocked the party’s promoters for their inability to forge the coalition they had set out to do initially.

“This is just a simple application for party registration. There is nothing like a ‘coalition’ here,” Keyamo said on X.

“It is an unnecessary hype the promoters have been struggling to create all along. It is just a psychological warfare on Nigerians – a weak attempt at mass appeal,” he said.

Rickets, a former commissioner for Information in Cross River State, in a letter attached to the registration application form, said: “We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance, ADA, as a political party.

“This is sequel to the decision taken by the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full registration.

“The name of the party shall be All Democratic Alliance with ADA as our acronym and ‘Justice for All’ as our slogan.

“The National Secretariat of the party is as stated at the bottom of the association’s letterhead used in this application.

“We have also herewith attached our logo describing in details the symbolism of our party colours and their configuration and the corn (Maize).

“We have further attached our manifesto encompassing details of our party ideology, and our constitution providing the legal framework that defines our identity, structures and organisation, regulates our affairs and guides our actions in alignment with Section 40 and 222 of the Constitution, Section 75 of the Electoral Act (2022) and global democratic principles and objectives.

“Please find attached the following documents: our party flag depicting our name, acronym and slogan, manifesto, constitution and minutes of meeting.

“While we eagerly await further action from the commission on the next step forward towards attaining our desired goal, please accept the consideration of our highest respect.”

Amaechi and Dr Umar Ardo who was Special Adviser on Research and Strategy to Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the Obasanjo Presidency, in a joint statement traced the formation of the group to a May 6, 2025 meeting in Abuja.

That meeting, according to them, laid the groundwork for the NNCG which is now seeking transformation into ADA.

On Thursday, the group approved a manifesto, logo, party constitution and choice of A.D.A.’s protem national chairman and national secretary.

Picked as protem national secretary was a former member of the House of Representatives from Awe/Doma/Keana in Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Musa Elayo.

The group said it would now begin to mobilise prominent opposition figures under its banner towards altering Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The next steps that the interim leadership is now working on include opening a national secretariat, new offices and bank account and commencement of effort to operate within the framework of the party’s newly approved constitution and in accordance with the 2022 Electoral Act.

Members of the new political party see themselves as game-changers with clear intentions of consolidating support from disillusioned voters and disgruntled elements across various existing parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which is currently battling internal rifts and leadership disputes.

“This development is a bold response to the loud yearning by Nigerians for a credible third force,” said Dr. Umar Ardo, Secretary of the Platform Committee, in a brief chat after the meeting.

    Keyamo: Where’s the coalition?

Keyamo, reacting to the registration application, said: “This is just a simple application for party registration. There is nothing like a ‘coalition’ here.

“It is an unnecessary hype the promoters have been struggling to create all along; it is just a psychological warfare on Nigerians – a weak attempt at mass appeal.

“No recognised existing political party or parties are part of this. If they are thinking of recreating what the APC did in 2013, then this is nothing but a pedestrian joke; a complete mockery of that seismic political coalition that birthed APC in 2013.

“A few individuals exercising their constitutional right to form a new political party cannot be described as a ‘coalition’ or even a ‘merger’. This is not different from several political associations springing up every day for the same purpose.

“After all the razzmatazz, it boils down to the fact that a new political party is just attempting registration by a few Nigerians; it is a disappointing anti-climax to all the preceding pomp and pageantry.”

     INEC’s conditions for party registration

Under the Guidelines for the Registration of new political parties issued by INEC in 2014, a political association intending to register as a political party shall first apply to the commission for the Guidelines and Regulations.

The application must be made on the commission’s FORM PAI in 50 copies and shall be accompanied by documents showing, among others, the name of the proposed party, the names, signatures and addresses of the chairman and secretary of the association filling the form, evidence of payment of the prescribed non-refundable administrative fee of N1 million in bank draft  to the commission and 50 copies of the association’s draft constitution and manifesto.

Upon the receipt of the application, INEC is required to verify the claims contained therein such as whether the membership contravenes any of the provisions of the guidelines; whether the association has officers in at least 24 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

Registration will be confirmed if the commission is satisfied that the association has fulfilled all the conditions prescribed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and the guidelines.

But where the commission is not satisfied, registration is denied.

Amaechi recently accused the commission of blocking the registration of new political parties.
