Nigeria on progress path under Buhari – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said on Friday that although the nation is moving at a perceived slow pace at the moment, President Muhammadu Buhari has reinforced the confidence that “Nigeria is on the path of progress and bright future.”

In a press statement issued by his media office in Abuja, Atiku said the first 100 days in office of President Buhari clearly indicated that Nigeria is witnessing a marked departure from the culture of impunity, inertia and apathy in governance.

He added that Nigerians have seen proofs that the country is already moving in the right direction, a development he attributed to Buhari’s leadership style.

The ex- vice president explained that when leaders lead by example, they will automatically inspire confidence in the populace.

Atiku insisted that the Buhari administration has succeeded in blocking revenue leakages and diversions, saying he was proud to be part of the change movement.

He said the Boko Haram terrorists, for the first time, are facing a fiercer response from newly motivated armed forces.

Buhari, Atiku, TUC mourn Borno deputy governor

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday eulogised the late Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Zanna Umar Mustapha.

He extolled his  commitment to excellence and service.

In a tribute to Alhaji Zannah, read on his behalf by the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd.), who led a presidential delegation to condole with the government and people of Borno State, Buhari said the young, hardworking politician would be missed.

Former Vice President and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Atiku Abubakar and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) said the death of Zanna was a great loss to the generation of young politicians.

Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said: “His was a life of service and excellence as attested to by many people who interacted with him,”

He prayed that Almighty Allah would comfort members of Zanna’s family as well as the government and people of Borno State, on his sudden death, and grant the late deputy governor a peaceful rest.

Governor Kashim Shettima, who received the delegation in company of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn-Garbai El-Kanemi; the Shehu of Bama, Alhaji Kyari Ibn Umar Ibrahim El-Kanemi and the Shehu of Dikwa, Alhaji Abba Tor-Masta, described the late deputy governor as a perfect deputy who was “simply irreplaceable”.

The governor thanked President Buhari for his sympathy and the solidarity of the Federal Government with the  government and the  people of the state.

He expressed  the people’s  appreciation of the effort by the military to end the Boko Haram insurgency, which, he said was yielding positive results.

Other members of the presidential delegation were Alhaji Bukar Goni, the permanent secretary, General Services, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Household Matters, Mohammed Sarki Abba and the Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

In a condolence message from his Media Office in Abuja, Atiku said the death was a big loss.

He expressed deep grief at the death of such a vibrant politician, whom he said, represented the hopes and aspirations of new-breed politicians.

The former Vice President said the fact that the late Zannah proved himself in office in a crisis-ridden state, such as Borno reinforced his faith and confidence in the abilities of young politicians.

He said if given the opportunities, youths could prove themselves in every role, adding that the deceased was a perfect and shining example of what young politicians could achieve if given the opportunity.

Atiku, NLC faction hail resolution of House leadership crisis

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Joe Ajaero-led Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) faction have hailed the peaceful resolution of the House of Representatives’ leadership crisis.

Atiku, who spoke in a statement yesterday through his media office in Abuja, noted that the amicable outcome of the tension in the House was in line with his position that compromise and accommodation were necessary in ending the deadlock.

NLC faction, in a statement by its Deputy President and General Secretary, National Union of Textile & Garment Workers (NUTGTWN), Issa Aremu, called on members of the National Assembly to settle down for legislative work.

He said the citizens were looking forward to progressive legislations for national development.

Atiku said the opposing sides in the House have demonstrated maturity, wisdom and sense of patriotism by finally arriving at a workable compromise.

The former vice president added that in any compromise, “you win some and lose some of your demands”.

He explained that he was constantly disturbed by how the crisis was adversely affecting the change agenda of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

He hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his fatherly role in the resolution of the National Assembly crisis.

The former Vice President explained that there should be no rivalry between the Executive and Legislative arms and that both should be united by the common goal of offering efficient service delivery to Nigerians.

The APC chieftain said: “As a stakeholder, I am committed to promoting harmonious working relationship between the two branches of government. I was once in government, and I knew why harmony and cooperation are essential in the success of presidential system of government.”

The former vice president urged the lawmakers to see themselves as partners in progress in the implementation of the change agenda.

He called on the warring parties to put bitterness  behind them, and direct their energies towards the success of the governing APC administration.

The NLC faction hailed the Senate and House of Representatives for the new spirit of reconciliation, which led to their successful resumption of legislative business on Tuesday. It added that they “must swing into action immediately”.

The statement reads: “The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, closes the chapter of acrimony with his commendable apology to Nigerians for the unparliamentarily conduct of the recent time.

“Labour is encouraged also with the remark of the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki that “leadership is secondary.  Primary responsibility is good governance”.

“This renewed sense of compromise by legislators should be reflected in their work ahead.

“The renewed reconciliation must now pave the way for real legislative business, which the Senate under the leadership of Senator Saraki has commendably started with the screening of the service chiefs as submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“More than ever before, the Eighth National Assembly has enormous tasks ahead given the unacceptable level of poverty in the land, factory closures and mass unemployment.

“Nigerians look forward to progressive legislations for national development, wealth generation, enhanced productivity, protection of domestic industry, ensuring dignity of labour, creation of jobs and decent wage among others.

“Real reconciliation among legislators must start with good laws for good governance.

The NLC said the anti-corruption crusade of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) must be fair and just.

“All Nigerians acknowledge the renewed effort of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC under the chairmanship of Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde in investigating and prosecuting proven cases of corruption.  There certainly cannot be development with pervasive corruption.

“However, labour urges EFCC to be fair and just in its dealings with suspects and avoid the pitfall of avoidable perception of bias. EFCC’s investigating and prosecution processes must be transparent and fair,” the statement said.

  • Atiku, Ladoja, Kalu, Daniel advise adherents to be good

Atiku, Ladoja, Kalu, Daniel advise adherents to be good

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Abia State Governor Orji Kalu, Accord Party National Leader and former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja yesterday led other eminent personalities in urging Muslims to embrace the virtues of forgiveness and understanding as they celebrate the end of Ramadan fasting.

Atiku, in a statement by his media office, said: “One of the basic components of Ramadan fasting is to seek the mercy of God to forgive us our sins, and thus it becomes imperative for us as humans to extend the grace of forgiveness and common understanding to other human beings as well.

“Being good Muslims requires that we follow the examples of Prophet Muhammed, who was always quick to forgive those that transgressed against him and lived a life of building common understanding among people.”

The statement added that at a time such as now when Nigeria is at the threshold of a new beginning, it was important that all hands be “on deck and old gaps are closed to support the new political leadership”.

The Turaki Adamawa while congratulating every Muslim for the successful completion of the Ramadan fasting season noted that it was a season of abundant grace from God almighty for the forgiveness of our sins.

Ladoja called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take special interest in the plight of Internally Displaced Persons due to Boko Haram attacks.

He said if they were not properly catered for, they would become more vulnerable to exploitation and the youth among them might be recruited by terrorists.

Ladoja, in his message, also urged the Federal Government to ensure that victims in camps were properly catered for so as not to become willing pawn to terrorists.

Asking Nigerians to continue to exercise restraint in accordance with the teachings of the Ramadan fasting, Ladoja said the “main lesson of Ramadan to Nigerians is that when people are committed to change, change is possible”.

“If it is possible for people to restrain themselves from sinful ways during the Ramadan month, it shows commitment and that has implication on our attitude to change. If people are committed to change, they will change their bad ways. I urge Nigerians to shun bad behaviours, sins and other vices that may hamper growth and development”

Kalu congratulated Muslims on the successful completion of the compulsory 30-day Ramadan fasting.

The former governor, in a goodwill message by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, said: “I wish to join our Muslim brothers and sisters in celebrating this year’s Eid al -Fitr.

“Despite the completion of Ramadan fast, the Muslim Ummah and Nigerians alike need to sustain the virtues of the holy month by maintaining the love, togetherness and peaceful co-existence that characterised of the holy month.

“The discipline and self-restraint as exemplified during the holy month is the only way to live a good life and make the society a better place to live.”

The immediate past Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel urged the adherents of the faith to keep up with the virtues gained during the Ramadan period which included piety, patience, tolerance, perseverance, humility, self denial and service to humanity.

Daniel urged Muslims to embrace the spirit of love, forgiveness and brotherhood preached by Islam and other religions.

Congratulating the faithful on the successful observation of the Holy month, he implored the people to celebrate with moderation and in the spirit of Ramadan which encouraged peace and charity.

  • Atiku hails Jega

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has hailed the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, ProfAttahiru Jega.

Atiku noted that the INEC boss whose tenure expires today has set an enviable record.

The former vice president added that the successful conduct of the 2015 general elections with the introduction of Card Reader and Permanent Voters Card (PVC) had tremendously boosted Jega’s reputation and earned him the respect of Nigerians and the international community.

A statement signed by Mazi Paul Ibe and released by the Atiku Media Office (AMO) in Abuja yesterday quoted the former Vice President and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as saying Jega disarmed even the worst pessimists.

Atiku said Jega had made a huge difference in the conduct of credible elections, and that he left no one in doubt that he deserved the appointment in the first place.

He explained that he was impressed by Jega’s remarkable comportment, patience, calmness and presence of mind under very tense situations.

The former Vice President noted that Jega had set a standard that would require his successor to work twice as hard to maintain his record and build on it.

He said it was not how many years an official spent in office that matters, but how he was able to make an impact within the scope of the opportunity he had to serve his country.

Atiku said: “Prof Jega didn’t disappoint Nigerians, and that history will write a favourable verdict on his impressive record.”

He therefore challenge the next INEC boss to continue with the various reforms introduced by Jega,  especially by pushing for reforms that might strengthen the Electoral Act and deepen democracy.

According to Atiku, reforming the Electoral Act would go a long way to consolidate our democratic gains, and build on the efforts to achieve credible elections.

  • Atiku’s unfurling APC power game

    Atiku’s unfurling APC power game

The All Progressives Congress (APC) bridge of change is gradually undergoing avoidable turbulence at the federal level and nobody seems to be in control at the centre except one, two or three ambitious northerners camouflaging individual interests as that of the entire country. And without equivocation, the avoidable leadership squabbles in the national assembly amongst members of the ruling APC must have emanated from the treacherous theatrics of these men that have stayed long enough in the centre’s corridors of power and have now forgotten that they have nothing more to contribute to the country but trouble.

The unraveling power game, though unnecessary, is a testimony to the need for the existing altruistic leadership of the ruling party to think deeply now about how to rescue the party from imminent perdition from inordinately ambitious members. And the sad truth is that the bulk stops on the president’s table as leader of the party to do something to rescue the situation from the hands of these political mafias so as to guarantee party supremacy that governors under the platforms are demanding for.

The reason for this is that since the ruling party escaped plots to scuttle its existence, it will be sad for it to now disintegrate at this point when it now control the centre due to the greed and indiscipline of some of its members. The former President Goodluck Jonathan’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) did everything possible to disintegrate the current party at the centre but failed woefully in the bid to achieve its goal of continuing to rule at the centre. Then Nigerians had a common enemy in the former president and were determined to send it packing when they found solace in the APC that promised to institute fundamental positive change into the polity.

Now that the party with the change mantra has mounted the saddle, what Nigerians are being subjected to is another theatre of the absurd as senators’ and honourable members battle one another in the leadership sharing contest in the red chambers and the House. The man at the heart of the avoidable shameless political legislative bout is Dr Bukola Saraki who won the senate presidency through subterfuge in an election that deliberately ensured that half of senators were disenfranchised. This development has kept mouths agape in the public sphere while pundits were already wondering if the defiance of party order by Saraki was not without the backing of powerful elements within the fold. Saraki had gone ahead to defy the party on the list of other principal officers of the red chamber. Speaker Dogara has equally played the Saraki game in the appointment of principal officers for the House of Representatives.

Some observers have pointed out that ordinarily what transpired on the day Saraki was elected in cahoot with the opposition PDP is nothing but a betrayal of the APC and what it stands for before Nigerians. How can the party that produced the presidency make any meaningful change in a national assembly with leadership that compromised with that old ineptly corrupt party order that the electorate worked assiduously to send out of power during the last elections?

Others argued along the same line saying that despite the political inadequacies of President Mohammadu Buhari, few northerners that ought to help him achieve the change mantra are seriously scheming to succeed him in 2019 by putting up structures in the legislature and the states and also discretely preparing ground, even though pretending to be the president’s loyalists, to dismember the APC before returning to the PDP more stronger to possibly take over power.

One of such few northerners is Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, former chieftain of PDP and AC and now chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC). These pundits pointed in the direction of his recent press release that needlessly distanced him from the shenanigans called election in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that produced Dr Bukola Saraki as senate-president quite contrary to the dictates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that controls majority of members in the red chamber.

This position must have been given impetus by an earlier release by the Atiku media office moments after Saraki was elected in a controversial manner and at a time when other respectable leaders of the party were still at a cross road over the abracadabra that happened in the red chamber. This writer recollects that Atiku, some moments after the senate election congratulated Saraki and Dogara despite the obvious controversy thrown up by the Senate’s election. This writer as a northerner considers it an irreconcilable hypocrisy for Atiku to believe that irrespective of the political mix through which the presiding officers emerged, even if it means that the PDP are directly in control, the 8th National Assembly would not lose focus of its role as a partner in progress with the other arms of government, especially the executive arm.

It would not be wrong to agree with some observers that see his calling on those that collaborated with the PDP to shortchange APC to ‘see their elections beyond the narrow interests of respective political parties’ as a signal of his plan to gather more followers across party divide to buy into his future presidential ambition which many believe he plans to pursue by 2019.

Further to the fact that there is no rumour without an iota of truth behind is the content of his second release which tried futilely to dispel the notion that his target was how to dislodge the current presidency in 2019. In that release, the Turaki dispelled insinuations that he has anything to do with the avoidable tussle in the senate despite admitting that it is correct for individuals or groups to seek to pursue their interest even if such is in defiance of party principle and resolution and can break down chain of discipline like is being witnessed in the scenario created by the Saraki and Dogara elections.

For instance, in a situation where a party man’s ambition contradicts that of the political party that gives him the mandate, Turaki did not tell Nigerians how that can benefit and sustain our democracy or promote equity, fair play and justice. To Atiku, supremacy of the party can be sacrificed simply because according to him: “In politics, it is a mistake to expect fixed outcomes.’’ No wonder that Atiku has not said a word about the latest defiance to party directives by Saraki and Dogara.

Simply because President Mohammadu Buhari, in his wisdom, maintains an apolitical stance on the democracy of ambush that happened at the senate that tallies with the mindset of Atiku, he has gleefully announced to the world: ‘On this, I stand with President Buhari.’ Will he still be standing with the president in the next three years or is his loyalty with him in as much as he feigns non-concern to measures Atiku and his team is taking to dislodge the president out of power.

In Atiku’s usual way of playing politics of divide and rule, he has infiltrated the rank and file of the party. Just recently, the All Progressive Congress (APC), under the aegis of the Chairmen’s Forum under the leadership of its Acting chairman, Alhaji Umar Haruna Muhammed of Kano State, after supposed four days of deliberation in Abuja noted: “We are urging all the aggrieved National Assembly to embrace dialogue and the re-conciliatory moves being championed by Mr. President, and the national leadership of our party, for the sake of national interest and APC.’ The question to ask the group is how can you have time to pursue national interest in the midst of unleashing detrimental parochial interest and infliction of injustice against use elements in the party.

The direction that the Saraki clique in the senate with the obvious covert backing of Atiku will only dump the nation in a cul-de-sac that may act as catalyst for denying Nigerians the much expected change. This urge for inordinate ambition will only batter beyond recognition the APC and the Buhari brand. The current president will only be victim of his dangerous apathy to serious issues of politics. Where is the national interest that they claimed was being pursued in this instance? May God save the country from politicians without conscience in the land!

Atiku: I didn’t hijack APC structure

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar yesterday denied the allegation that he has hijacked the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure in preparation for the 2019 presidential race.

The statement described the insinuation as a figment of the peddlers’ imagination.

He urged Nigerians to ignore such insinuation.

The statement reads:  “He notes that the recent outcomes of the National Assembly election contrary to insinuations are products of interplay of politics which is itself in constant motion.

“In politics, it is a mistake to expect fixed outcomes. As the President has done, let’s all come to terms with what has happened in the interest of the system and move on. Suffice it to say that the new administration should be allowed a smooth take off and be allowed the atmosphere to deliver. On this, I stand with President Buhari.

“The Turaki Adamawa while restating his unalloyed commitment to the Buhari administration pledged to back this commitment with all of the assets at his disposal.

“Not only did Atiku Abubakar congratulate Buhari after his emergence as the presidential candidate of the APC at the party’s national convention in Lagos, he also handed over his best assets to the Buhari Presidential Campaign. The former Vice President enthusiastically handled the diplomatic assignment of seeking endorsement for Dr. Adesina as the President of the African Development Bank on behalf of President Buhari and would be available for any other assignments as the President pleases.

“Make no mistake about it Atiku Abubakar holds Buhari in the highest esteem, and would always remain loyal to him, and support him in every endeavour to succeed as president.”

“The APC chieftain also called on Nigerians with members of the President’s own party taking a lead in their undiluted support of his administration.

“We, the members of the President’s own family need to lead in this direction for others to follow for the good of our nation and its peoples.

“It has become crystal clear even to the blind that the motives of these hatchet men who are desperate to take every available newspaper space is to insult, vilify and calumniate the former Vice President.

“We cannot allow liars, denigrators and blackmailers and their sponsors to use Atiku as platform to ingratiate themselves with President Buhari and hijack his presidency under the pretext of loving him more than anyone else. These political ventriloquists are hiding behind the cover of anonymity to achieve their sinister agenda of making Atiku the fall guy in the unfolding political developments.”

He said it was dangerous for any individual or group in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to constitute themselves into an opposition against their party.

Atiku, who is also a chieftain of the party, advised that personal interest should not be allowed to pose a threat to the new administration and democracy.

According to a statement from his Abuja media office by Mazi Paul Ibe , Atiku urged groups in the party to take the sustenance of the nation’s democracy into consideration.

The statement quoted Atiku as saying that: “Anything to the contrary may jeopardise our hard-earned democracy and constitute a clog in the wheel of the new administration.”

He added that following the challenge of building a functional Nigeria that is ahead of the President, he needs the support for good governance that could culminate in a better life for Nigerians.

The former Vice President asked his members to emulate the unity of all the presidential contestants after the party’s primary election in Lagos and support the President to form his government and get to work in earnest.

  • Opposition within APC dangerous for Buhar’s govt, says Atiku

Opposition within APC dangerous for Buhar’s govt, says Atiku

Former Vice President and chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar says it is dangerous for any individual or group in the ranks of the ruling party to constitute themselves into an opposition even before the constitution and take off President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

The former Vice President made the call against the backdrop of developments in the polity, which he notes are interplay of forces and interests that are dynamic, but must not be promoted to the point of being a threat to our democracy and the new administration.

In a press statement released by his media office in Abuja on Sunday, 21 June and signed by Mazi Paul Ibe, the Turaki Adamawa while acknowledging that it is legitimate and desireable for individuals or groups to seek to pursue their interest, it must be done with the benefit of sustaining our democracy and promoting equity, fair play and justice in mind.

“Anything to the contrary may jeopardise our hard-earned democracy and constitute a clog in the wheel of the new administration,” Atiku said.

He noted that because of the historic nature of the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari and the arduous challenges ahead to deliver on making Nigeria work for all Nigerians, it is important, especially for members of his own party, to rally behind him in the quest to enthrone good governance, that will spur security and stability, economic and social development, job creation, infrastructure renewal and above all a better life for Nigerians.

The former Vice President urged members of the APC to emulate the unity of all the presidential contestants after the party’s Lagos primaries and support the President to form his government and get to work.

The statement exonerated Atiku Abubakar of the purported hijack of the party and the National Assembly towards 2019 as figment of the imagination of those promoting it and asked Nigerians to ignore all such insinuation.

He notes that the recent outcomes of the National Assembly election contrary to insinuations are products of interplay of politics which is itself in constant motion.

“In politics, it is a mistake to expect fixed outcomes. As the President has done, let’s all come to terms with what has happened in the interest of the system and move on.

The APC chieftain also called on Nigerians with members of the President’s own party taking a lead in their undiluted support of his administration.

“We, the members of the President’s own family need to lead in this direction for others to follow for the good of our nation and its peoples.”

Atiku Abubakar denounced the increasing determination of some people to draw a wedge between President Buhari and himself.

• Atiku, Kwankwaso, Tambuwal and Ekweremadu

    Atiku, Kwankwaso, Tambuwal and Ekweremadu

It is worrisome what dire portents the controversial National Assembly (NASS) leadership elections of June 9 have let loose. The elections were supposed to be a routine, if slightly competitive, exercise to choose those who would preside over the affairs of the 8th Senate and 8th House of Representatives. But it turned out to be a harbinger of unsettling and inextricable complications for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Given what the disputed elections signposted, the APC must ready itself for more intrigues and fierce competition for dominance by party leaders. In defiance of his party, APC’s Bukola Saraki had struck an alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to emerge as Senate President, with PDP’s Ike Ekweremadu as his deputy. In the lower chamber, Yakubu Dogara, also defying his party, had emerged as Speaker, with Lasun Suleiman of the APC as deputy.

While the APC was still fuming over the developments in the National Assembly, some of the party’s key leaders offered their views on the election and managed in the same breath to show where they were headed politically. The viewpoints of three APC leaders — former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso — indicate just how poignantly the NASS election transcended merely producing the leaders of the 8th NASS. Senator Saraki, Alhaji Atiku, Governor Tambuwal and Senator Kwankwaso are thought to eye the 2019 presidential race. Their actions and opinions on the June 9 NASS leadership elections were believed to have been influenced by their ambitions. But whether each has pursued that ambition ethically and healthily, and with the insuperable circumspection of a future presidential aspirant, will be clear in the coming months.

The election, or more accurately, the affirmation, of Senator Ekweremadu appears to be the leitmotif of the forthcoming presidential struggle. The reaction of the four APC leaders to the presence on the APC ticket of PDP’s Senator Ekweremadu is serving as the litmus test to gauge their loyalty to the party, their character as individuals and politicians, and their understanding of the dynamics of Nigerian politics. Senator Saraki’s ambition is hardly disguised. While he is entitled to nurse any ambition, many party leaders and followers are uneasy over the guileful but facile manner he ceded the important and valuable position of Deputy Senate Presidency to the PDP, and act attributed wholly to his machinations. Even after the brouhaha over the political heresy is quietened, it is doubtful whether Senator Saraki can be trusted again. Party leaders, members and the populace will wonder whether there is a limit to what and who Senator Saraki can trade for his ambition. He will be judged blameless for resisting his party and pursuing his ambition to lead the senate; but he will not be exculpated for undermining his party in such a grand, reckless and offensive manner. He is unlikely to live down that betrayal, or celebrate for long what is evidently a pyrrhic victory.

Alhaji Atiku denies that his celebration of the outcome of the NASS elections has anything to do with the 2019 presidential race, but he has offered no forceful or convincing justification for turning a blind eye to Senator Saraki’s subversion of party discipline. Indeed, Alhaji Atiku was enthusiastic in welcoming the new NASS leadership. “The Nigerian people are looking up to the new National Assembly to work with the executive arm to find solutions to the problems of insecurity, poverty, illiteracy and joblessness in the country,” gushed the former vice president. “Their election is indeed a call to duty, and it is a call for which they cannot afford to fail the nation.” He goes on to suggest that the new NASS leaders should not be discomfited by the circumstances of their emergence, but should swing to work immediately and not let personal political interest supersede national interest. He offered no direct or indirect opinion on the subversion of party discipline plotted by Senator Saraki, nor of the embarrassment and dire implication to the APC which the affirmation of Senator Ekweremadu as Deputy Senate President disgracefully connoted.

While Alhaji Atiku has achieved some renown in crisscrossing political parties, Governor Tambuwal, another party leader who might be interested in the 2019 presidential race, had a reputation for general stoicism and ideological politics. During his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives, he came across to many as a dependable politician and leader, one who mixed well, and was sagacious, intelligent and courageous. Why he seemed blithely unaware of the damage to his reputation which his inappropriate reaction to the NASS leadership election implied is hard to understand. He was an ardent defender of the independence of the legislature, and he stood ramrod against the political and executive malfeasances of the Goodluck Jonathan administration. But surely, given his perspicacity, he should be capable of drawing a line between legislative independence and legislative ethicalness, and between party discipline and executive interference. Yet, he was not too incommoded by the desire to defy his party when he felt it was justified. Whether that justification had anything to do with principles or personal interest cannot now be easily established. But in embracing the June 9 NASS elections, which he claimed exampled the maturation of Nigerian democracy, he showed none of the gifts, accomplishments and oratorical endearments for which he had been celebrated as a hero of the 7th Senate.

Senator Kwankwaso has never hidden his interest in running for president. In fact, he is unabashed in showing his interest. He has a solid political pedigree, and his time as governor of Kano State, not to talk of his Kwankwasiya ideology, continues to resonate quite well with many Nigerians. In the last APC presidential primary, he surprised many by coming a famous and inspiring second to the winner, Muhammadu Buhari. Since then he has talked sensibly, fearlessly, independently and clairvoyantly. What is more, he seems somewhat uncannily prescient in judging political matters. Weeks before the June 9 NASS elections, he had warned of an impending catastrophe if APC leaders failed to handle the NASS leadership elections well. After the elections, when some party leaders waffled, he forthrightly lambasted Senator Saraki for rank indiscipline, and described other beneficiaries of the aberrant elections, such as Senator Ekweremadu, as undeserving. He also counseled the party to establish its authority over its members if the Buhari presidency was not to be threatened by the new and unholy alliance between Senator Saraki and his new PDP affiliates.

It may be too early to project into the 2019 presidential race, for four years is a very long time in politics. But so far, Senator Kwankwaso has talked the talk most engagingly. His sound bites are clear and crisp, and his stand quite geomorphologically close to the Rock of Gibralta. It however remains to be seen how well he can stay faithful to, and be focused on, doing and saying the right things effortlessly. At the bottom of the posturing by these ambitious APC leaders is the expectation that President Buhari could choose not to run in 2019. If he does however run, the hopes and plans of these early aspirants will be summarily dashed. If he does not run, the field will be crowded by many presidential wannabes, some of them accomplished flip-floppers, and others too short-termist to endure a long race. Among them, if he can stay the course, and nurse his principles, will be Senator Kwankwaso, ebullient, iconoclastic and pragmatic as ever.

Former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and his Sokoto State counterpart Aminu Waziri Tambuwal have called on Muslims to pray for peace being threatened by the Boko Haram insurgent in some parts of the country.

Atiku said he was saddened by the frequent explosion of conflicts and violence.

He called on political leaders to show extra vigilance to stem the growth of extremism.

The Turaki Adamawa expressed sadness that people have been turned to captives of fear because of the spectre of terrorism.

He called for urgent action to attack the roots of terrorism.

To attack the ideology, he explained that, innocent Muslims should be shielded from the influences of extremist teachers, who might exploit their ignorance and push them into criminal atrocities.

Atiku expressed sadness at how a minority group of misguided bigots are giving innocent Muslims a baggage of negative image.

Dogara said the present crop of leaders in Nigeria came in at a very critical time, saying that the promise of change by the new government can only be realised if Nigerians rededicate themselves to the service of God and humanity.

“As mere mortals, we cannot achieve anything of our own wisdom and strength but with prayers, and determination, we can collectively overcome our challenges as a country,” he said.

Governor Ahmed said the country seems to be experiencing unusual economic and security challenges that require concerted efforts and prayers from everyone to get it back on track.

“At a time like this when our state, and indeed our country is passing through dire economic challenges due to the slump in national earnings, national rebirth through good governance, Allah’s intervention in guiding our leaders in rejuvenating the economy and rebirth  is crucial”, the governor said.

Tambuwal appealed to the citizenry to prioritise the plight of the needy by spending from their wealth to ease the pains of the people.

According to the governor, “by taking care of the poor, the vulnerable and the less-privileged, the society is doing itself lots of favours.”
