Atiku urges Nigerians not to despair

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged Nigerians not to despair because of the country’s challenges.

Atiku, in a New Year message to Nigerians by his media office in Abuja yesterday, said he was aware of the tough challenges of existence facing ordinary Nigerians.

But, he noted that democracy offered the people the opportunity to use the power of their votes to bring about the desired change.

He also reminded political leaders that the success of democracy is determined by how much the life of the people has improved, and not how much fortune leaders  made for themselves.

According to the former vice president, “while poverty is accelerating like hurricane in the land”, elected leaders are living opulent lifestyles inconsistent with the hardship of the ordinary voters.

Explaining that democracy is as good as those who practise it, Atiku added that elective offices should be perceived as an opportunity to offer selfless service rather than personal enrichment.

He argued that once democracy was made to work as it should, there would be no excuses for the level of poverty in the country.

On deepening democracy, Atiku urged political leaders to embrace the spirit of tolerance, adding that people should not become enemies because of political differences.

He urged Nigerians to see the New Year with renewed optimism and be active participants in the struggle to bring about change by democratic means.

Atiku urged them to register massively and collect their PVCs to enable them to vote for parties and candidates of their choice.

On the slump in oil prices, he urged leaders to cut down on extravagant lifestyles.

To Atiku, it is not enough to tell ordinary Nigerians to make sacrifices in the face of economic austerity while leaders are reluctant to evenly share the burden of such sacrifices.

Former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), on Thursday secured the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket after edging out four other aspirants at the party’s primary election held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

According to the result announced by the Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Buhari polled 3, 430 votes to brush aside competition from Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who recorded 974 votes.

Following Buhari’s success at the APC primaries, the stage is now set for a titanic battle between the Daura-born former army general and President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party in next February presidential poll.

The former head of state had contested three previous presidential elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011, losing on those occasions to PDP candidates.

Over 7,000 delegates took part in the exercise  monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, including the National Commissioner, Col. M.A. Amanga and the Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola.

Meanwhile, Atiku has congratulated Buhari over his victory at the primaries, saying his triumph at the poll was well deserved.

“Gen. Muhammadu Buhari ran a spirited campaign, and that since the delegates have spoken, he fully deserves the victory.

“I am very confident that you will provide the needed leadership to turn this country around. I have no doubt that you will work with dedicated and qualified Nigerians to protect our citizens, improve our economy, create jobs, improve education, reform governance and fight corruption.

“You will indeed bring the change Nigerians have been yearning for. Once more, congratulations,” the former vice president said in a statement issued by his media office in Lagos.

I’ve reconciled with Obasanjo, Atiku tells Catholic Bishops

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar has declared that he has fully reconciled with his former boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Speaking in a statement from his media office, the former Vice President also identified waste, poor management and failure to diversify the economy by the current administration as the reason for the adverse economic impact of the fall in oil price.

Atiku affirmed at an interactive session with the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria Conference (CBNC) that there is no animosity left in the relationship with his former boss and that bygones are bygones.

Atiku made this revelation at a parley he held with representatives of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria in Abuja.

He made the declaration in reaction to the anxiety expressed by the Most Reverend Anthony Obinna, Archbishop of Owerri and his counterpart from Calabar, the Most Reverend Joseph Ekuwem. Both Clergymen expressed disappointment at the celebrated face-off between these two men when they were in power as President and Vice President between 1999 -2003.

Obinna said that in 1999, both Obasanjo and Atiku started well to the admiration and high expectation of Nigerians, only for the people to be disappointed when rift and ill-will developed between them thereby derailing the progress of the nation.

Obinna lamented that the political elite has failed the nation tracing today’s problem of insecurity and corruption to the failure of the political elite. He asked the former Vice President to assure the nation’s Catholics that the rift is over and that such would not occur again.

Describing the Turaki Adamawa as an open-minded individual, the Archbishop of Owerri said he is impressed by Atiku’s interest and commitment to national unity and fairness.

Responding to the concerns of the Clergy men on the insurgency ravaging the country, and the accompanying insecurity, the APC presidential front-runner told the CNBC led by the Most Reverend (Dr.) Ignatius Kaigama that it is the duty of the political and military leadership to crush insurgency whenever and wherever it rears its ugly head.

Atiku reminded the Bishops that when he was in government with Obasanjo as President, an insurgent group, known then as Nigerian Taliban started problem in the North east but was crushed within three weeks.

The APC presidential aspirant revealed that the Obasanjo administration in which he was the deputy moved so fast to uproot the insurgents that many Nigerians till today do not even remember there was an insurgency.

He also said that aside crushing insurgency through leadership, the leader should also mobilize resources to provide socio-economic opportunities and an enabling environment to keep youths and the able-bodied productively engaged while the military need training and re-training to make them efficient.

Speaking on the state of the economy, the APC presidential aspirant said that had we been able to diversify and manage our economy in such a way that we conserve rather than waste our resources in surplus years, the present austerity measure would not be necessary.

According to the former Vice President, period of boom and austerity occur in circles in capitalist economies but to minimize the impact and ensure that the citizens do not suffer during the drought years depends on what the leadership did with the years of plenty.

The APC presidential hopeful recalled the years of his Vice Presidency when the administration he served in was moved to create the Sovereign Wealth Fund by the desire to have a fallback position for the nation’s economy. He said the idea behind the Fund is to have a pool where excess resources can be pooled to take care of the years of drought.

Atiku revealed that it was also this problem and the need to streamline the country’s alarming debt profile when he was in power with former President Obasanjo that compelled him to get the World Bank to assign then Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to join his economic team in the Presidency to locate and collate the country’s actual debt for liquidation.

He said the current Minister of Finance worked in his office for nine months and that the effort culminated in the establishment of the Debt Management Office (DMO).

He stated that careful management of resources and diversification of the economy is the responsibility of a committed and focused leadership and urged Nigerians to use the opportunity of the 2015 polls to choose the right person and political party to lead the country.

He identified the issue of indigeneship as a serious impediment to unity among Nigerians.

Atiku said the prevailing situation where young and innocent Nigerians who are born in places other than where their parents come from and who have spent their entire lives in those parts of the country are discriminated against as non- indigenes is not good for the country.

He said everything must be done by political, community and religious leaders to combat the issue of indigeneship and allow Nigerian citizens no matter their ethnic origin to be free in any part of the country they were born or reside.

The Turaki Adamawa told the Bishops that it is unfortunate that a Nigerian would go to the US or some European country to give birth to a child and the later would instantly acquire American citizenship while in Nigeria, indigeneship question dominate our discourse.

He called on religious leaders to preach against this issue and encourage their congregation to love one another and promote national unity

APC clears Buhari, Atiku, others for presidential primaries

The Presidential Screening Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cleared former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to contest the December 10 the party’s presidential primaries slated for December 10 in Lagos.

Also cleared are Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, his Imo State counterpart, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and the Publisher of Leadership Newspaper, Sam Nda-Isaiah.

Before their clearance, the five aspirants were made to sign an undertaking not to decamp to any other party if they failed to get the party ticket and to support whoever emerges as candidate at the end of the primaries.

Speaking before presenting clearance certificates to the five aspirants who were screened on Tuesday, the Committee Chairman and former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, said the time has come when Nigerians must make a decision whether to continue with the present state of affairs in the country or effect a change for the better.

Onu said the problems of Nigeria has persisted not because they are insurmountable, but because the nation has not found the right leadership, pointing out that the APC was formed to fill the vacuum and provide the leadership required for the nation to grow.

He said: “This committee would want to appeal to Nigerians that the time has come for our country to take a stand. There is a choice before us. Are we going to continue the way we have been going in the last 16 years when our security forces are used to intimidate and harass the very citizens who pay for their maintenance?

“Are we going to continue a situation where we are the sixth largest exporters of crude oil and yet we import virtually all the petroleum products that we use and as we do this, we are exporting jobs and rendering our people unemployed? Is this what Nigerians would want to do?

“Are we going to allow a situation where the rule of law is violated and there is no orderliness whatsoever? This is a choice for Nigerians. The ruling party has had 16 years and so, it is not a question of making promises. We are judging them on their records because they told us that within two years, there will be regular and reliable supply of power for 24 hours a day and seven days a week. This is the 16th year and that promise has not been fulfilled.

“So, Nigerians have a choice to make because when you have two things, you can never know until you try them. So, Nigerians ought to try the APC and give us a chance to show that the problems in the country can be solved.”

    APC screening tough — Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has on Tuesday in Abuja described the screening carried out by the All Progressive Congress (APC) for presidential aspirants as tough.

“It was a hot seat. There were several questions on the economy, insecurity, jobs among others. “The screening was tough but we pulled through,’’ Atiku said, adding that he was ‘grilled’ for 58 minutes.

Fielding questions from journalists, the APC presidential aspirant said: “I have been on campaign for two months, and I am ready.

“On the allegation that I am trying to buy the party over by donating everywhere I go, I think it is false; we can donate to whomever we want,’’ he said.

He said that APC would take the final decision as regards where its presidential primary election would take place.

Also speaking to journalists after their screening, Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano state and Dr. Sam Nda-Isaiah also said that APC would take the final decision as to the primary election venue.

“The choice of Abuja as venue is central for someone from Adamawa or Yobe; traffic in Lagos is also a factor but whether Abuja, Lagos or Benin the party has the final say,’’ Kwankwaso said.

Governor Kwankwaso, while expressing satisfaction with the committee members further said: “they asked lots of relevant questions.

“We are successful and will return tomorrow for our certificates”.

Nda-Isaiah likened the screening to a job interview.

“It is the biggest job interview in Nigeria. “I want to be president to effect change not to feel good. My reign we will be harsh on corruption.”

There must be justice, equity and fairness; all crimes must be punishable irrespective of the status of the perpetrator,” he summed.

The party chieftain said: “We will be doing something that is novel in this country, because we really want to effect change. We want to produce a candidate that will effect the change; a candidate that will be able to address the problems confronting our nation.

His words: “All aspirants will commit themselves to adhere strictly to the manifesto of the party should they become candidate and eventually, by the will of God, become president-elect and President of Nigeria. We as a party are not happy with the way the nation has be governed in the last 16 years.

“Nigerians want change; the APC was formed to effect that change and we believe that whosoever becomes our candidate and wins to become president must abide by our manifesto so that Nigerians will know that really, there has been a change.”

“The time has come for another party to be tried so that if it doesn’t do well, you can change it. We believe that if the APC comes on board, we will do well so that we can stay for a long time. I think this is something that all Nigerians must do for the good of our country.

“The constitution stipulates the qualification for someone to stand for election and the party has its own qualification. If you don’t meet that of the party and of the nation, you will stand disqualified.

“If the committee decides that any aspirant is not qualified, such an aspirant has the right to appeal to the National Working Committee.”

  • 2015: We have gone beyond consensus in APC – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday ruled out any plan by leadership of the All Progressive Congress to pick a consensus candidate ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.

He said that at this stage of the race, the issue of consensus candidacy is not being considered, adding, “we have gone beyond consensus and we are all working and looking towards the actual primaries.”

Atiku, who stated this in Owerri, Imo State, during his consultation tour of the Southeast zone, noted that he was in the presidential race to make history in the APC.

He urged the party delegates to work for the victory of the party, even if their candidate is not picked at the primaries, saying the quest to take power from the People’s Democratic Party should be put ahead of individual interest.

The former vice president also confirmed that he has a pact with the state governor, Rochas Okorocha, who is also in the presidential race.

“I chose to make Imo the last state I will visit in the Southeast because of two major reasons. The first reason is that Imo State is my second home and, secondly there are two of us that are in the presidential race from this state – myself and Governor Okorocha.

“Any vote for him is a vote for me. When you have voted for him you have voted for me and when you vote for me you have voted for him,” Atiku stated.
