Buhari condemns missile attack targeting Makkah

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed Nigeria’s solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the aftermath of the ballistic missile launched by Houthi militias, targeting the holy city of Makkah.

A statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said Buhari  spoke with King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia via telephone.

According to him, it is reprehensible and ignoble for terrorists to target a holy land, where millions of Muslims from around the globe gather for pilgrimage.

The President expressed delight and appreciation to Almighty God that the Saudi defence forces intercepted and downed the missile, 65 kilometres  from the holy city of Makkah.

Buhari reiterated the need to strengthen international support and coalition in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

  • Tax attack

•Experts say sugar has no health value and WHO okays ‘tax attack’

If you thought the world would be a bland, unsavoury place without sugar, well brace yourself for a sugar-free world someday. If you are already a sweet-tooth who relished sweetened sodas and sugar-crusted cakes and donuts, well be ready to pay through your nose for the world is up against sugar.

Well, maybe not exactly the world but the World Health Organization (WHO) has just given a tacit nod to the campaign to impose heavy tax on soft drinks and other sugar products. Countries like Mexico and Poland have imposed taxes as high as 20 per cent on soft drinks, while South Africa will introduce sugar tax next year.

WHO, which had frowned at the rate of consumption of sugar is of the opinion that raising taxes on ‘free sugars’ could drastically reduce their consumption. Free sugars are those not found naturally in fruits and milk.

According to the global health body, people do not really need sugar intake as it nutritionally has no value. On the other hand, lower sugar intake would lower the incidences of diabetes, obesity and tooth decay.

WHO is probably led to its current convictions by the rising prevalence of diabetes in the world over the past few decades. There are about 1.5 million cases of diabetes in Nigeria alone and 422 million adult cases worldwide by 2014 statistics.

Diabetes is described as a chronic metabolic disease characterised by elevated levels of blood glucose which may over time lead to serious damage of the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidney and nerves.

Of all the ailments arising from the excessive intake of sugar, diabetes is the most dreaded because of the huge economic loss to the sufferers and their families as well as the health systems. According to WHO, the epidemic of diabetes has major health and economic impacts, especially in developing countries.

We think that this tax and other lawful measures to curb excessive sugar intake and other harmful modern lifestyles are in order. Such foods, drinks and other substances ingested by modern man which have no salutary nutritional values but on the other hand, are harmful to the body need be moderated.

Taxes on sugary foods and drinks are therefore a welcome policy that is indeed long overdue. We however urge that it requires a thorough and indeed studied process of public debate and broad consultations of all stakeholders.

All the options must be thrown up and considered. For instance, all the issues between reduction in container size, the reduction of volume, quantity of sugar and appropriate taxes necessary; consumer rights and individual freedom of choice require a period of robust debate and public engagement.

There are also the issue of regulation and monitoring by the appropriate agencies. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) must raise its game. It is common knowledge that many manufacturers are currently flouting the requisite regulations. A few years ago, NAFDAC in random checks on some manufacturers of consumer goods found that many products like soft drinks, toothpastes and bread produced in the country were actually not fit for human consumption.

What this suggests is that if all the agencies did their work efficiently, there probably would be no need for this tax. The various ministries of health also would need to increase tempo on their enlightenment programmes to educate the populace on harmful modern lifestyles.

In other words, we aver that tax is good but everyone must do a little more… it is about our lives after all.

The sugestion came at the inauguration of new leaders of a group,  Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship (NCGF), an inter-denominational prayer organisation.

The new national President of the group, Prof. Charles Adeyinka Adisa, an oncologist at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) promised that his regime would sustain and build upon the efforts and achievements of the previous one.

The election of the new leaders which took place in Benin, the Edo State capital, was capped in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State, with the inauguration and handover of official documents.

Speaking after the inauguration and handover, the former national President of NCGF, Dr. Samuel Itina said he was optimistic that the new regime would deliver and work in the interest of all.

He called on Christians to pray for the country.

The new President of the group, Prof. Charles Adeyinka Adisa, said his regime would build on the foundation of his predecessors.

He spoke on a number of issues, including the Fulani herdsmen’s rampage which he said would come to an end with the creation of ranches.

He said, “In Saudi Arabia, their cows in ranches produce about 30 liters of milk per day, but cows in Nigeria produce less than 10 liters of milk daily. Keeping cows in ranches will help to nip the attacks of communities by Fulani herdsmen and also promote the hygienic level of meat that we consume in Nigeria.”

Bayelsa: Gunmen kill policeman in politician’s house

A policeman serving as an aide-de-camp to a politician in Bayelsa State has been killed by gunmen.

It was gathered that the policeman whose identity was kept under wraps was gunned down when the hoodlums attacked the house of the politician in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Though the politician’s identity could not be determined, he was said to be holding an appointment in the government.

It was learnt that the incident happened along INEC Road, at Kpansia area of Yenagoa on Thursday morning.

The Commissioner of Police, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi was said to have confirmed the incident to members of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO).

Adeyemi, however, failed to disclose the circumstances surrounding the murder and the actors involved in the incident.

CLO led by its state Chairman, Chief Nengi James and former Secretary, Alagoa Morris, visited Ogunjemilusi to formerly report alleged increasing cases of extra-judicial killings and harassment of innocent citizens in the state by the police.

One of the members of the CLO, who spoke in confidence, quoted the police boss as saying that one of his men was killed by hoodlums.

He said: “We were unaware of the incident until we got to the police command. The commissioner of police told us that he lost one of his men.

“We immediately condemned the killing of the policeman and asked the police to thoroughly investigate the incident and unmask the identities of persons behind the murder.

“The commissioner, however, did not tell us the circumstances surrounding the incident. We condemn the killing of policemen in this country not just in Bayelsa because all human beings are covered by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights and our various constitutions”.

Though the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Butswat Asinim, could not provide details of the incident, it was learnt that the gunmen stormed the house of the politician at about 3am on the fateful day.

While their target escaped their bullets, the policeman was not so fortunate as he was hit and killed on the spot.

A source who identified himself as Seiyabo lamented the killing of the policeman and identified the deceased as a perfect gentleman.

He said: “He is a perfect gentleman, simple to a fault and down to earth. He is a very loving husband and a very friendly neighbour. I have not seen him smoke nor drink alcohol, he is a true Niger Delta son and a true example of how to be a policeman.

“He has never intimidated nor harassed anybody within our neighbourhood. He celebrated with those that celebrated and grieved with those in pain.

“His only crime was to serve his fatherland. He is a human and if he was killed unjustly, he deserves the sympathy of all and sundry. His wife is still crying bitterly and all his neighbours sobbing quietly”

  • APGA condemns attack on members

The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has condemned the attacks on some of its members in Upper Sokponba area, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government. It fingered members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as being behind the attacks.

  • School denies attack by Hausa youths

Hausa youths did not attack Lagooz School in Agege, Lagos, last Tuesday, the proprietor and the Arewa Council of Chiefs, Agege Kingdom, have said.

At a press conference in the school, the proprietor, Mr Yomi Otubela, and representatives of the Arewa Council of Chiefs said the report could create ethnic tension in the community.

Otubela said there was a fight at the school’s car park after a valedictory service last July 16, which the police contained.

He said a teacher, Mr John Nwakam, was hit in the eye while attempting to separate the brawlers.

The proprietor said nobody entered the school or vandalised its property, adding that there was also no theft and the woman principal was not attacked.

He said the fighters were released by the police the next day and have since apologised for causing trouble.

“We distance ourselves from the report that the school was vandalised by the Hausa community. This is an area that is tense with a lot of political/tribal tension, so spreading this kind of news is not right.”

“The fight happened outside the school; they did not in any way come into the school. It involved two young well wishers of the graduating pupils. One of them unintentionally used his car to hit the other and an argument ensued between the two car owners that consequently led to a brawl. When the school management noticed it could not control the situation anymore, they had to involve the police at Elere Police Station. However, parents of the detained persons visited the school to plead and an understanding was reached. The culprits were later released by the police.”

The Arewa Council of Chiefs, spokesperson Alhaji Kabiru Dinar, condemned the report, which he said could tarnish the Hausa community’s reputation.

He said: “We are no more considered as settlers; we are part and parcel of this community and have a track record of peaceful coexistence. We don’t allow our children to cause trouble. This kind of publication can cause ethnic crisis. We are not happy because it can tarnish the reputation of our community which we worked hard to build.”

The group’s Mogaji Alhaji Zango Abubakar, said the incident was reported to him on the day it happened and he met with Otubela the next day and all was amicably resolved.

The principal, Mrs Olivet Otubela, and Nwakam denied being beaten.

Parent of one of the arrested youth, Alhaji Sabiu Rabiu, said the story misrepresented the incident.
