Those who attacked us for supporting Buhari now parade themselves as his foremost supporters—Buhari Friends Organisation President Okon

Saint Athanasius Okon is the National President, Buhari Friends Organisation Network, a socio-political group. He contested the election into Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on the platform of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2007 and contested same under the Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN) before contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2011 on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). He spoke with OLUGBENGA ADANIKIN on the activities of the NGO as well as his concerns about the goings on in the polity.

What is your position on Akwa Ibom politics and speculations concerning recent appointments by the President?

Firstly, let me introduce myself, as Saint Athanasius Okon, from Uyo Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State, a core All Progressives Congress (APC) member, registered with AkI/IBI-03002461. I started active politics in 2003 on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). Interestingly, I contested elections to represent my state constituency, Ibiono Ibom, for Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, on the opposition ANPP in 2003, won the primary election and stood for the general election against the PDP and other parties’ candidates. But for the massive rigging of the said election by the ruling PDP government in Akwa Ibom State. I could have won the election with a landslide, even as my first entry into the political arena. I was indeed the preferred a candidate in my local government.

After four years, precisely 2007, as my people were not getting the much needed quality representation in the state’s House of Assembly, I was compelled once again to re-contest in 2007, this time on the platform of Action Congress (AC). As a founding member of Action Congress in Akwa Ibom as well as at the national level, I did my best to ensure that the party was really embraced by my constituency and indeed Akwa Ibom as a whole, since the government of PDP was not really providing the expected dividend of democracy, considering the amount of money accruing from the 13 per cent derivation and internally generated revenue.

Indeed, AC was really accepted, with Mr. James Iniama as the governorship candidate. But despite the yearnings of the people of Akwa Ibom for a positive change to have a people friendly government in place, the ruling party, the PDP, still refused to let go and went ahead to rig the 2007 election. But even with what actually transpired as were witnessed at the elections tribunal, they still had their way with strong backing from Abuja. Again, history repeated itself, as I have to remain consistent in my ideological belief to be in the progressive, since the emphasis was on the emancipation of the proletariat, the downtrodden.

In the year 2011, apart from being a founding member of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), I also contested the primary and general election on CPC’s platform for the House of Representatives, to represent Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency. Once again, as usual, I stood my ground, didn’t step down or withdrew for fear of the usual PDP attacks and intimidation, including killings/kidnapping of opposition candidates. In 2011, nobody, including the prominent faces today who are now born again, embraced the APC government. Those who are pretending to be new members could not openly tolerate the name Buhari in Akwa Ibom. I was personally attacked by some of them for defending Buhari. It took God and the former DSS Director, a man I don’t remember his name now but know is from Plateau State, to save my life from the agents of the PDP. I was physically attacked, embarrassed for supporting him and for contesting election on the same platform as Buhari.

Were you the only contestant attacked in Akwa Ibom?

A number of us then in an area completely dominated by PDP were in the opposition, so we were prone to attacks. There was no wealthy man in Akwa Ibom State who could have taken such a risk except a few of us, the poor, who supported the ruling party. Since politics and party affiliation should as a matter of fact be based on ideology, I think my actions and those of other few members of the opposition then and today are ideology-based, and we are really proud to witness the emergence of President Buhari, a popular stone openly rejected by the same builders that have come through the back doors and benefited from his government.

What really surprised me lately is the fact that people like Senator Ita Enang, Senator Udo Udoma, Mr. Nsima Ekere and finally Mr. Frank Samuel George, are all from the PDP, and I want to be challenged here. As I have volunteered my party’s membership registration number, apart from being a bona fide member of ANPP, AC and the CPC, let them come forward and present same for us to really appreciate who actually worked and who benefited. Apart from Senator Udoma, a known PDP man, who up till this moment has not opened his mouth to profess APC, the rest three, from my findings, claimed to be members of APC. Therefore, I challenge them to bring out their membership registration number to show when they came on board, as there is no justice where those who toiled and suffered persecution from PDP people are indeed the ones relegated to the background while erstwhile tormentors are those calling the shots.

Are you saying the President was wrong in his choice of appointees?

No. I feel there is a syndicate that wrongly advised the President because he is unfamiliar with Akwa Ibom politics. Apart from coming from the same Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, both the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator (Barrister) Udoma and Mr. Nsima Ekere, who was one of the PDP governorship aspirants in 2015; a former deputy governor to Mr. Godswil Akpabio, are from the same Ikot Abasi federal constituency. The two had been prominent PDP members since 1999, and can hardly join a non-ruling party, being rich men and powerful.

Again, the one called Mr. Frank Samuel George, a known special Adviser to Mr. Godswill Akpabio, a PDP man to the core, who never can tolerate both the name Buhari and APC during political campaigns is from Onna Local Government Area, same as the current governor of Akwa Ibom State. So, put together, all of them, except Senator Ita Enang who is from Uyo senatorial district, are from one senatorial district, Eket.

In view of the foregoing, I am compelled to ask if Mr. President was given this important information with regard to these new APC acclaimed members and where they come from, to avoid breaching the federal character principle. A case study here is what happened to one of the key supporters of Mr. President from Niger State during the ministerial appointment. I remember that after findings proved that a ministerial nominee from Niger State was indeed from the same constituency as the current governor, his nomination was withdrawn by the President for someone else who today is the Minister of State, Solid Mineral Resources, Hon. Bawa Bwari. And it is a fact that the minister in question here is from a different federal constituency and senatorial district. I stand to be corrected.

Why are you concerned about these appointments? It appears most APC members in Akwa Ibom are satisfied with the President’s choice. What do you stand to gain if they are relieved of their appointments?

My answers are very simple. As well known, the average Akwa Ibom person is not interested in things they believe they lack the power and capacity to challenge, especially when it concerns the rich and influential in the society, for fear of intimidation and threats. Another reason here is the fact that majority of Akwa Ibom people today are still being controlled and directed by the influential PDP people, who perhaps use their capacity in position of authority to influence their choice of reasoning.

Again, since Akwa Ibom is still under the control of the PDP government, the rest of the APC extraction, with high level of poverty, are afraid to come out and speak. Rather, they may not mind going to see the possibility of associating with the new arrivals, perhaps they may be lucky to be carried along. Finally, most of the genuine APC members, the real suffering ones, who laboured, toiled for years, praying to God for His intervention and for the change which, by the grace of God, we have today, are still wondering what has suddenly taken place. They still believe what has happened is a dream story and cannot be seen to be real in the average man’s imagination.

As for me, am indeed compelled to speak in respect of this ugly trend, believing that Mr. President was indeed not properly briefed about the backgrounds of the aforementioned appointees. The Niger State’s case has established a precedent. I can quote him exactly: “Those who just decamped and joined the APC in order to get comfort and benefits should forget it, as it would not be possible.” He would carry along and appoint to work with him only those he knows so much as associates, who laboured and toiled with him right from the era of the ANPP, up till the APC.

So, considering the fact that I am a known APC member, a proper Buhari supporter who at no time decamped from my ideological belief and principled stance of President Buhari, one of the very few in Akwa Ibom who, even the PDP members themselves can attest to, the only name apart from Group Captain Sam Ewang (rtd) known amongst the Akwa Ibom media to have been so vociferous in the campaign for Buhari’s emergence, the only one apart from Ewang that would go to a known private radio station via Politics Today to defend the person of General Buhari. The others never spared either Buhari or APC during the campaign era, as they were busy working for themselves and Goodluck Jonathan to continue.

Even on the floor of the Senate, where Senator Enang was during the campaign period, his stance was indeed obvious. My question is, if Ita Enang had won the primary election for his second term in the Senate, which he never contested via the APC platform but his Party, the PDP, would he have come to embrace Buhari? If he and others who are the major beneficiaries today had supported Buhari genuinely, I think the right time should have been when a few senators of the PDP decided to join the struggle and certainly not after the battle has been won and lost. He himself, the first beneficiary from Akwa Ibom in Buhari’s government, should have joined us based on his love for the man Buhari and his stance against indiscipline and other social vices, including corruption, whom he has now found comfort to be speaking for today.

Don’t you think their appointments will indirectly benefit the people of Akwa Ibom State, irrespective of party differences?

As far as I am concerned, none of the above mentioned appointees from Akwa Ibom, has enjoyed the support and encouragement of genuine APC members in the state. I stand to be corrected. None of their appointments have ever been celebrated by the people of Akwa Ibom. I mean both the poor masses and genuine APC members. They are certainly not popular among the down trodden and the average electorate. Here, I mean political value. I wish to challenge these privileged appointees to come up with a fact that they indeed supported the emergence of President Buhari, not certain APC friends here.

Where were these names when I led the Buhari Friends Organisation Network for a South South political rally in Uyo, which attracted supporters from all the six states of the South-South? Even a great number came in solidarity from the South West. I have documented records of all this, including when we were attacked by their party members, etc. If these calibers of men were behind me and others for Buhari, I think a lot could have been achieved in Akwa Ibom then. Up till this moment, the only known physical structure which every sane person in Akwa Ibom, irrespective of political affiliation, including the media, identify with the name Buhari can be found at N0 61, Udotungubo Street, off Oron Road, Uyo; the Buhari Friends Organization Network Office donated by Group Captain Sam Ewang, a national patron from the State.

This structure is known to have been there since January, 2014, when the names mentioned above were still very active PDP officials who never gave us a chance. The name Buhari, to them and their associates today, was an abomination, while people like us were seen and called agents of Boko Haram. Since APC, to most of them, was known and addressed as a dead party with a dead presidential candidate. In view of the above, I am personally forced by my conscience and the pressure I got daily from genuine supporters of Buhari who really suffered and were beaten mercilessly by supporters and agents of some of the born again beneficiaries, I am compelled to speak out. None of these names has done anything in form of financial contribution or other logistical materials, including open identification with the Buhari agenda in the 2015 political campaign and suffering, compare to myself and other genuine APC members.

As I speak here, I think no one else can be called a major APC stakeholder in Akwa Ibom State more than myself, Group captain Sam Ewang and a few others, considering the level of sacrifice we put in place, therefore the need for me to finally open up to convince the teeming supporters and members of the

Buhari Friends Organization family in Akwa Ibom State that I am not in support of the recent developments. I wish to finally plead with Mr. President, as a man of probity, fairness and justice, to address some of these anomalies, find out the true feelings of the average genuine APC member in my state, Akwa Ibom, as the few privileged elites would hardly avail him the exact position on ground.

  • Police nab fleeing guard who attacked master

Police nab fleeing guard who attacked master

A security guard, Ibrahim Musa who attacked his principal in Lekki Phase 1 Estate, Lagos, last month, has been arrested in his hometown in Michika, Adamawa State.

Mr Ajiboye Akinjide, General Security Manager of Cougar Security Services Ltd, the firm that employed Musa, said he was arrested on July 9.

Musa was arrested by Corporal Stephen Chris and Sergeant Silas and flown to Lagos on July 11 with Inspector Sunday Arebamen and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvanus, both of the Maroko Police Division.

Akinjide told The Nation that Musa has been remanded in Ikoyi Prison pending his trial at Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on August 3.

He said: “We have been able to get the guy arrested.  He is in Ikoyi Prison.  He was charged to court.  It was on the strength of that that he was remanded in prison. We spent quite a lot of money, about N550, 000 to get him arrested.  The police officers from Maroko Police Station trailed him to Michika.  We had to fly him from Yola to Lagos. Members of his family have been contacted.  All of them were disappointed but they told him to carry his cross.”

Akinjide said the victim, who travelled to the United Kingdom for surgery after the incident, is recovering.

“The victim is recuperating in the UK.  I learnt the surgery went well and she was discharged a day after,” he said.

  • APC supporters attacked on way to Black Day rally

APC supporters attacked on way to Black Day rally

    •10 supporters’ buses burnt

Gunmen yesterday attacked Rivers State All Progressive Congress (APC) members on their way to the venue of the Black Day rally.

Over 60 supporters escaped death when the gunmen attacked the buses conveying them to the venue of the rally at the Polo Club, Evo Road, GRA, Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Several people were injured in the attack although nobody was killed.

The Rivers State APC planned the rally as a memorial for those killed before, during and after this year’s elections and to seek justice for their killings.

Those attacked included supporters from Omuma, Etche, Eleme, Degema, Gokana Asari-Toru and Akuku-Toru local government areas.

At Akuku-Toru, APC supporters accused a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) top chieftain of mobilising 1,000 thugs to stop the rally.

The rally, which APC described as a solemn peaceful protest, was attended by its chieftains, members and supporters from the 23 local government areas of the state, activists and community leaders.

Dignitaries at the rally included APC governorship candidate in the April 11 poll, Dr. Dakuku Peterside; its State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikaya; Chief Andrew Uchendu, Senator Magnus Abe, Dawari George, and Lucky Worluh.

APC supporters arrived at the party’s secretariat as early as 7am; Peterside arrived at 8.30am and led the long procession to Polo Club.

Those killed before, during and after the elections include: Cyracus Wobodo; Christopher Adube, a former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area; his two sons – Lucky and John Adube; his brother, Iyke Ogarabe and his driver, Samuel Chukwunonye.

Others are: Hope Allison, Sampson Oreke, George Eweh, Nwabueze Robinson, Clever Orukwowu, Miss Ada Wele, Saturday Lekia, Divine Dimkpa, Chima Uchendu, Ezekiel Thompson, Emenike Obulor, Daniel okiridu, Paul Adube, Sampson Okike, Aduche Odinionwu, Chukwuebuka Mbamalu, Beatrice ledum Deadum and Precious Dimari Pepple.

There were other victims who were not listed.

Families of the slain APC stalwarts recalled how they were killed.

Some clerics at the rally prayed for the bereaved families and the souls of their departed members.

In tears, the bereaved families urged President Muhammadu Buhari to revisit the report of Prof. Odinkalu’s Commission of Enquiry to ensure that the killers and their sponsors are brought to justice.

Mr. Goodluck Unchendu, brother to the late Chima Uchendu, said his brother was shot to death because of his support for APC in his local government.

He appealed to the party and President Buhari to assist the six children his late brother left behind.

Mrs. Orukwowu, the wife of the late Cleaver Orukwowu, an APC Youth Leader in Ogba/Ebema/Ndoni Local Government Area, said those who murdered her husband killed an important thing in her life.

She vowed not to forgive his killers.

Mrs. Orukwowu urged President Buhari to ensure that those who killed the husband were brought to justice.

In his opening remarks, Dr Ikanya said: “Today is a special day. We set out today to honour those killed before, during and after the elections. We are calling on the Federal Government to look at the report of the Commission of Enquiry, headed by Prof. Chidi Odinkalu.

“After that revealing report, nobody has been arrested; today, more crimes are being committed with impunity. This is not the Rivers State of our dreams. The only way for the victims of the 2015 general election to have peace is to bring the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to book.”

Fineman Olungwe and Lucky Worluh, who led APC local governments’ elected chairmen to the event, said they were happy that nobody died in the attack.

They urged the Inspector-General Police (IGP) to consider Rivers as one of Nigeria’s unsafe states.

Peterside prayed for the relatives of the victims.

The APC chieftain said the attack on his supporters showed how desperate some politicians had become because of power and relevance.

He said the rally was held to mourn and celebrate the lives that were cut short by the violence that characterised this year’s elections in Rivers State.

Peterside said: “We hope your experiences might be extrapolated for the greater good of deepening democratic ideals. For the passive observers who are here out of curiosity we hope that you will end up taking deeper interest in the war against political violence.

“We are gathered here for a purpose that is paradoxical. It is violence that has continued till today, merely mutating and transforming from attacks before and during the elections. Now, we suffer kidnappings, armed robberies and assassinations by persons who are yet to be dispossessed of the guns with which they were ‘empowered’.

“Fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and friends were attacked and killed in their homes in cold blood because of their political leanings. Some were attacked and killed while they were on their way to attend campaign rallies. Our campaign venues were victims of explosive devices and attacks by gunmen. These were intimations of more unpleasant scenarios.

“On Election Day, ordinary citizens, who wished to cast their votes, as enshrined in the statues of our land, were killed or maimed by trigger-happy and dagger-wielding political thugs and mercenaries. In some cases, at polling units, elderly persons were beaten up until their hearts literally stopped beating.

“Our brothers and sisters died because some politicians, who were consumed by vaulting and inordinate ambition, engaged in horse-trading. More than 100 innocent persons were killed; they were victims of evil acts of desperate politicians. You have heard chilling stories from their families. But for the sensitivity of our sensibilities, I wish to recant that narrative here.

“Unfortunately, till date, not a single person has been prosecuted for these crimes against humanity. Brothers and sisters, we are here to commemorate the memories of these victims of political violence.

“For us, they were not just victims but martyrs. They constitute the ‘strong breed’ who have taken our collective burden to ensure the survival of democracy, particularly in Rivers State and Nigeria. It would be callous of us not to remember and celebrate their sacrificial but untimely deaths.

“We recognise that at all times and in all situations we are ‘Greater Together’. Hence, today, together we stand to say ‘No’! to any form of political intimidation and violence in our land.

“Brothers and sisters, welcome to Rivers Black Day, a day dedicated to the memories of more than 100 persons who were killed.”

But Rivers State PDP yesterday urged the police to arrest Peterside, Senator Abe, Chief Uchendu and other Rivers APC leaders for what it called a breach of public peace.

PDP State Chairman Felix Obuah, in a statement by Jerry Needam, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, said the event was a demonstration of impunity and disposition to cause a crisis.

Obuah said the organisers of the event feigned a public procession to cause a crisis in Port Harcourt and make cheap political points by blackmailing the PDP. He added: “To us, the killing that took place during the 2015 election is a treasonable offence and should be investigated and those culpable be arrested and prosecuted accordingly. To forestall further breakdown of law and order, the police should arrest organisers of this illegal and rebellious procession in the state to serve as deterrent to others.”

Commando storm luxury Mali hotel attacked by extremists

Malian commandos yesterday stormed a luxury hotel in Bamako after extreme Muslim gunmen took 170 people including many foreigners hostage in Mali’s capital, which has been battling rebels allied to al Qaeda for several years.

Dozens of people were reported to have escaped or been freed, but at least three were dead. A security source said the gunmen had dug in on the seventh floor of the hotel as Special Forces advanced on them. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

State television showed footage of troops in camouflage fatigues wielding AK47s in the lobby of the Radisson Blu, one of Bamako’s smartest hotels. In the background, a body lay under a brown blanket at the bottom of a flight of stairs.

Minister of Internal Security Colonel Salif Traoré said three people had been killed and two wounded by the gunmen, who burst through security at the hotel entrance at 7:00a.m, spraying the area with gunfire and shouting “Allahu Akbar”, or “God is great” in Arabic.

Occasional bursts of gunfire were heard as the assailants went through the seven-storey building, room-by-room and floor-by-floor, one senior security source and a witness told Reuters.

State television said 80 hostages had left the building by midday, but an hour later the hotel’s website said 124 guests and 13 staff were still inside.

Some people were freed by the attackers after showing they could recite verses from the Koran, while others were brought out by security forces or managed to escape under their own steam.

One of the rescued hostages, celebrated Guinean singer Sékouba ‘Bambino’ Diabate, said he had overheard two of the assailants speaking in English as they searched the room next to his.

“We heard shots coming from the reception area. I didn’t dare go out of my room because it felt like this wasn’t just simple pistols – these were shots from military weapons,” Diabate told Reuters by phone.

“The attackers went into the room next to mine. I stayed still, hidden under the bed, not making a noise,” he said. “I heard them say in English ‘Did you load it?’, ‘Let’s go’.”

The website of the French newspaper Le Monde quoted him as saying the attackers had spoken with a Nigerian accent.

The raid on the hotel, which lies just west of the city centre near government ministries and diplomatic offices, came a week after Islamic State militants killed 129 people in Paris, raising fears that French nationals were being specifically targeted.

Twelve Air France flight crew were in the building but all were extracted safely, the French national carrier said.

    How hoodlums attacked Ayefele

On the aftermath of the attack by hoodlums on gospel crooner, Yinka Ayefele, last Saturday in Akure, Ondo State, the artiste has been hospitalised following impact of the injuries he sustained.

According to information, the popular musician was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Ado Ekiti where he had gone to honour the invitation of the Ekiti State government to perform at the World Teachers Day organised by the state government.

A release signed by his Publicist, Mr. David Ajiboye disclosed that the physically challenged artiste was hit with a plank on his chest during the attack on Saturday in Akure.

“Yinka Ayefele, MON, was attacked by hoodlums on the outskirt of Akure on Saturday October 3, during the burial party of Madam Ebunoluwa Lydia Odumakinde where he was contracted to perform with his band members.

“The hoodlums, after collecting N200,000 from the artiste as ‘settlement’ later demanded for a sum of N500,000 which did not go down well with Ayefele and in the process of the argument, he was hit on the chest by a plank which was thrown at him,” the statement read.

The release also added that Ayefele’s Ford Explorer was vandalized and his recently acquired N150 million musical equipment was not spared. “The hoodlums vandalised the newly acquired musical equipment and the truck while his new Ford Explorer 2015 model SUV was also vandalised, as well.”

Only last year, the versatile singer, was hit by a sad incident when his abode in the Felele area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, was engulfed by fire.

Ayefele became a household name when he was involved in a ghastly auto accident in 1997, that led to a damage in his spinal cord and paralyzed him from the waist down.

  • Nigerian attacked in South Africa

The  president of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr. Ikechukwu Anyene, has confirmed a xenophobic attack on at least one  Nigerian, with the United Nations (UN)  raising  the alarm over  the deadly violence which has displaced thousands.

South Africa’s neighbours yesterday prepared to evacuate their citizens.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) from Pretoria, South Africa, Anyene said the mechanic workshop of the  Nigerian was completely destroyed early yesterday  in Johannesburg.

“In the early hours of today (yesterday), the mechanic workshop of a Nigerian, with 10 cars and all the tools inside, was destroyed by some South Africans.

“The build-up to the attack started last night (Thursday) when the South Africans started gathering in the neighbourhood of the Nigerian. The Nigerians living there did not sleep and early today, the South Africans struck,” he said.

He said the  attackers defied the presence of the police to carry out the attack.

“The attacks are spreading and Nigerians do not sleep again.

“They keep vigil to ensure that they are not taken unawares. There is tension everywhere. Nigerians have closed their shops for fear of being attacked,” he said.

While confirming that no Nigerian has been killed, Anyeye asked  Nigerian and South African governments to reach an understanding to protect Nigerians in South Africa.

“South Africa has lots of businesses in Nigeria and they are doing well. Also, South Africans live in Nigeria, and it is on record that Nigerians have never carried out xenophobic attack on fellow Africans.

“Though no Nigerian has been killed, it may get to that because we have had close shaves with death. The real truth is that Nigerians have lost so much in their businesses to the attacks.

“The time has come for the Nigerian government to make a categorical statement on these attacks. We are not happy with what is happening and something urgent must be done to stop these attacks.”

The federal government has advised Nigerians in South Africa to remain indoors until the situation stabilises.

Yesterday, the  United Nations (UN)  raised the alarm over  the deadly xenophobic attacks in South Africa .

The anti-foreigner violence, which erupted in the eastern port city of Durban, has left at least six people dead and spread to the economic hub, Johannesburg.

“In South Africa, xenophobic attacks over the last three weeks have displaced over 5,000 foreign nationals,” the UN refugee agency said, adding it was “extremely concerned”.

“We would like to underscore that those affected in these xenophobic attacks are refugees and asylum seekers who were forced to leave their countries due to war and persecution,” the UNHCR said.

Foreigners who have fled their homes are sheltering in makeshift camps.

Neighbouring Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique announced plans to evacuate their citizens, as the violence drew regional outrage.

Zimbabwe’s ambassador to South Africa, Isaac Moyo, said the repatriation of about 1,000 Zimbabweans from Durban would start tomorrow.

  • Olayioye: 3SC fans attacked Kwara Utd, match officials

Olayioye: 3SC fans attacked Kwara Utd, match officials

Irked by Wednesday’s result of the league game between Shooting Stars Sports Club, (3SC) of Ibadan and Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin which ended one goal apiece, irate 3SC fans allegedly descended on the match officials, Kwara United supporters, players and officials pelting them with missiles.

According to a press statement by Kwara United’s Media Officer, Olayioye Ajide, Kwara United supporters, players and officials, caught unawares after the gritty encounter, ran helter-skelter seeking for cover as 3SC fans vented their spleen on them.

Ajide alleged that Abdullahi Muritala, the cameraman of Kwara United, was badly beaten and his camera was snatched. The drum set used by the away team’s supporters was also damaged. Supporters were tortured as many were hit by objects flung at them.

The statement further said that center referee Cristansus Okoro from Imo State had to take off his dress on the field and his uniform and other items were picked up by Kwara United officials. His first and second assistants Anthony Uzonna and Andy Ubani were rescued from the hands of the mob.

The show of shame was also extended to the Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Babatunde Olaniyan a league match commissioner. He attempted to placate them but was also attacked.

The 3SC fans claimed the center referee denied them goals during the game which give the advantage to the visitors. This was the reason for their violence.

Kwara United scored in the 44th minute of the first half via a free kick by Dare Ojo but 3SC levelled up in the 66th minute through Adepoju Taofeek who headed in a cross in the vital area.

Kwara United got four yellow cards and Dare Ojo sent off, even as 3SC won more than 10 free kicks around the arch in a match played in the rain.

“It is highly disappointing that a traditional club like 3SC which has followers across the country could throw caution into the winds and display no decorum in their conduct.

“What lesson are they teaching others? The Nigeria Professional Football League Board should rise to the occasion because the second and crucial stanza of the league has just started.

“It is psychologically depressing going through such in the Nigerian league,” Olayioye sounded.

Olayioye assured Nigerians that Kwara United would hold no grudge against them but that the NPFL should bring the culprits to book and retrieve Kwara United’s lost items.

  • Woman, 38, attacked by ‘shark’ in Forcados River

IT was narrow escape for 33-year-old Mrs. Torugbene-ere Aboh. But for Providence, she would have been attacked by a Shark in Forcados River where she was having her bath in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

She was said to have gone for a three-day religious programme at the Holy Zion Church, Oboro and decided to have her bath at the Focardos River when she escaped the attack.

Narrating the ordeal to reporters, Mrs. Aboh said she had a deep cut on her right leg shortly after entering the river.

According to her, she screamed for help and that she was saved by the quick intervention of brethren who pulled her out of the water.

She was rushed to a nearby a patent medicine store at the Oboro community for first aid before she was taken by her husband, Mr. Patrick Aboh to a private clinic at Bomadi for further treatment.

Mr Aboh told reporters that her wife, the mother of five was lying critically ill due to the attack, which she blamed on the ravaging floods.

A community leader in Bomadi, Chief Godspower Oporomo, warned residents against going near the fast flowing current of the Forcados River.

He specifically cautioned parents and guardians to keep an eye on the children.
