  • Buhari, Tinubu, dons mourn Oluwole

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended condolences to the Oluwole family on the death of Prof. Sophie Oluwole, renowned philosopher and Nigeria’s first female doctorate degree holder in philosophy.

Prof Oluwole died on Sunday in her home at Ibafo, Ogun State. She was 83.

In a statement yesterday by his Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President joined members of the family, the academia and other close associates in mourning the cerebral philosopher, who through her teachings and works celebrated the Yoruba culture, history and worldview.

She reminded the world that within pristine traditions are values that promote the ideals of democracy, fairness, equity and justice, the President said of the deceased.

Buhari said he has the belief that the deceased would be honoured and remembered for her commitment and skill in spreading the word about the good in promoting African tradition, culture, knowledge and languages.

The President urged all who mourn Prof Oluwole to honour her memory by carrying on from where she left off in her zeal to promote indigenous knowledge, skills and discipline that could help us redefine ourselves as a people and a nation.

All Progressives Congress (APC) leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu described the late Prof. Oluwole as a distinguished academic and Yoruba nationalist.

He said the late philosopher; popularly called Mamalawo (female native doctor) would be deeply missed because of her commitment to the development of the Yoruba culture, tradition and philosophy.

The former Lagos State governor said: “Prof. Sophie Oluwole was a distinguished academic, pan-African philosopher and Yoruba nationalist. As Nigeria’s first female doctorate degree holder in philosophy, she truly earned her stripes. She believed in and practised what she taught and preached.

“She loved and celebrated Yoruba tradition and philosophy so much she was nicknamed Mamalawo.

“Nigeria, the Yoruba race and all those who admire pristine traditions will sorely miss Prof Sophie.  Her teachings and works derived from the Yoruba school of philosophical thought. To her, the ancient African philosopher Orunmila was second to none.

“I commiserate with the Oluwole family, the academic community, students who passed through her. I pray they have the strength and resilience to continue where she stopped. To the soul of the late Prof, I pray for eternal rest.”

In the academic, the late professor’s community, her demise was described as a significant loss to Africa.

The Dean of Arts, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Muyiwa Falaiye, who was late Mrs. Oluwole’s student and later colleague, described her as a brilliant thinker whose work on African philosophy rivalled world-recognised philosophers like Aristotle and Socrates.

The professor of African Philosophy said: “She was my teacher and PhD supervisor. She was a mentor; we worked together for a long period first as a student, then as co-lecturers.

“She was a role model, a good woman, an Africanist.  She is a big loss to the academia, not only in Nigeria but internationally.   She is well-known for her noble work on Orunmila.

“It is significant work.  Many people had thought that no African had the capacity to think but Oluwole showed a lot of wisdom can be got from African philosophers that can rival what European Philosophers like Socrates and Aristotle did.”

UNILAG’s Vice Chancellor Prof Toyin Ogundipe said the deceased added value in the university where she retired 18 years ago.

The vice chancellor said: “It is sad that we had to lose her now; but we thank God for her life. She contributed effectively. She was former dean of students’ affairs. In the academic space she contributed very well.  She is a well-respected woman in her department and faculty.”

Prof Ogundipe said the university’s programme to honour her would be dependent on her family’s plans.

The Igbara-Oke, Ondo State Prof Sophie Oluwole, was the first woman to earn a doctorate degree in Philosophy in Nigeria.

She studied History, Geography and Philosophy at UNILAG after which she was employed as an Assistant Lecturer in 1972.  She earned her PhD in Philosophy at the University of Ibadan (UI), Ibadan.

She taught African Philosophy at UNILAG between 2002 and 2008 and focused on the Yoruba school of philosophical thought that discussed the cultural and religious beliefs of Yoruba land.

She was recognised for her activism for women in philosophy and education.

    Buhari won’t resign – Presidency

The Presidency on Monday declared that President Muhammadu Buhari would not resign from office.

Buhari had been in the United Kingdom since May 7 for follow up consultations with his doctors.

Speaking with State House correspondents, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, said President Buhari has not breached any law of the country.

Shehu was reacting to calls for the President to resume office or resign.

He said: “Those making the calls are exercising their rights in line with the constitution of this country. Of what use, or value is a democracy in which citizens cannot embark on peaceful protests? So we respect their right to convene or undertake peaceful protest.

“On the call for the President to resign or disclose whatever, I think they are stepping outside the laws of this country.

“Anyone conversant with the constitution of this country will have noticed or seen that Mr. President has complied 100 percent with the requirements of the constitution of this country.

“He has handed over power to the vice president as required by the constitution and the vice president is carrying out the affairs of this country. He is undertaking activities of government in line with the constitution in a way that the President himself has given words of commendation.

“So the President has not breached any law. What he has done is perfectly in line with the constitution and people are looking for things to say. I think they should do their research very well.”

…Osinbajo explains new food distribution plan

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday in Maiduguri unveiled a new and more effective distribution plan for delivering relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons in the North-East.

The new plan differs from the undignified practice of forcing people to queue up for food.

Under the new plan, which Prof. Osinbajo kicked-off at the Bakassi Camp, camp officials will now be demanded to deliver food items to the IDPs at their door-steps in exchange for a pre-issued voucher.

Acting President Osinbajo, while unveiling the new strategy, said that the plan is part of the vision of President Muhammadu Buhari towards catering for the needs and welfare of IDPs in the North East region of the country.

Osinbajo, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, said “We are incorporating the voucher system which do not only make the process of relief distribution transparent, it will improve our own data collection and our national capacity to plan for what will be a quarterly exercise.

“As we restore and maintain security in the region, we must not lose sight of the need to provide social service, food, education, healthcare, shelter as well as resettlement and livelihood support.

“Today, the Federal Government flags off what will be a quarterly grain distribution programme for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and by this, we are saying to our brothers and sisters in the Northeast that our country does not take their burdens lightly and we are not blind to their difficulties.

“I am particularly pleased to say that the grains that we’ll be distributing, which comprise of Sorghum, Maize, Soya Beans, and Rice, are produced locally; they are produced here in Nigeria by our own farmers.

“This has always been the vision of Mr. President for our country, to grow what we eat, and to eat what we grow and to use what we make. These grains have travelled from various locations across the country, from as far afield as Ibadan, and as close as Gombe; escorted and protected by the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Military and in some cases will be airlifted by the Nigeria Air Force.” he added

He also said that the Federal Government would work closely with States to provide other assistance to the IDPs including health services.

He commended the partnership support from international partners such as the UN, World Food Programme, NEMA, the Military, the Police, other security agencies and State Governments in the region.

He also thanked neigbouring countries like Cameroon, Chad, Niger for their support in the joint fight against terrorism.

“While great progress has been made, there is still a great deal more to do. The reward for hard work as they say is more hard work and we have shown that as a people, we are up to the task.” he said

The Acting President, who on arrival paid a courtesy visit on the Shehu of Borno, Umar Abubakar Gabai Ibn El-Kanemi in his palace, told the traditional ruler and members of his Emirate Council that President Buhari sees the welfare of the IDPs as the responsibility of government.

The Shehu of Borno thanked President Buhari for his commitment to the restoration of peace in the State and entire region.

He noted the laudable efforts of the Buhari Presidency at recovering the kidnapped Chibok girls and attending to the welfare of IDPs across the region.

Upon arrival in Maiduguri, the Acting President inspected the consignment of about 30,000 metric tonnes of the food items to be delivered across the region by 1,032 trucks.

The distribution is for affected persons in of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi and Gombe States.

Prof Osinbajo during the visit also inspected some facilities such as the NEMA warehouse, the Bakassi IDP camp office and the premises of School A located within the camp.

With the Acting President at the event were governors from the region, including Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, and Governor Bindow Jubrilla of Adamawa State. Yobe State Deputy Governor Abubakar Ali was also present alongside members of the National Assembly, members of the Federal Executive Council, Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, the National Security Adviser to the President, General Babagana Munguno, Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Buhari denies harassing Jonathan’s family

    • Says the law only taking its course

The Presidency on Wednesday denied the allegations that President Muhammadu Buhari was harassing members of former President, Goodluck Jonathan’s family.

A statement by the Special Adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, reacted to the headline story in a national newspaper of Wednesday, entitled: ‘Buhari’s Govt Harassing my Family, Says Jonathan.’

According to the report, former President Goodluck Jonathan was said to have made the allegation in a new book, “Against The Run of Play”, written by the Chairman of ThisDay Editorial Board, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi.

RELATED: Buhari’s govt harassing my family, says Jonathan

Jonathan was also reported to have disagreed with the style being used by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in fighting corruption.

The statement reads “We make bold to state unequivocally that President Buhari harasses nobody; he merely allows the law to take its course.

“For the umpteenth time, we say that anybody without a skeleton in his or her cupboard has nothing to fear about the bared fangs of the anti-corruption initiative. Fear belongs only to those who have abused trust while in office.

“Anybody who feels aggrieved is free to approach the courts to seek redress or justice. President Buhari believes in the rule of law and that is why his campaign against corruption is anchored on that plank.

“With regard to President Buhari’s anti-graft style, which the former president deprecates, given the scale of revelations and recoveries so far by the anti-corruption agencies, it is obvious that corruption had an uninhibited course during our recent past.

“In any case, time will give the verdict on whose style of fighting corruption ultimately yielded the most dividends. For now, President Buhari is resolute and single-minded in the fact that his crusade against graft is not targeted at any individual or group.”

Buhari, the statement said, firmly believed that national interest must always be placed above personal interest, no matter who is involved.

She said: “The populace must be encouraged to prevent themselves by going for regular screening, and rehabilitating themselves through hearing devices,”
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the State House, Jalal Arabi called on everyone “to see today, the World Hearing Day as a wake-up call for us all to value and guard this special organ called Ear, to strive to maintain a healthy hearing health.
“Since most of the hearing impairment is preventable, we should strive not to fall a victim. Everyone should do all to improve maternal and child health to keep at bay, preventable childhood diseases that lead to hearing loss.”
Arabi assured that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would equipment the ENT department of the State House Clinic.
President of the Oto – Rhino – Laryngological Society of Nigeria (ORLSON), umbrella organization for Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists, Prof. OGB Nwaorgu has advocated that Neonatal Hearing screening should be made mandatory in all health facilities to ensure that babies with hearing loss or predisposed to hearing loss are identified early.
