    Venus sparks off engagement rumours with Hammond

    Venus Williams  may have booked an early exit at the Australian Open, but she nonetheless had more than enough to showcase at event. Venus who was sent packing  6-3 7-5 by Swiiss Belinda Bencic, sent tongues wagging of engagement rumours  when she was pictured sporting an eye-catching diamond band on her ring finger as she walked through Sydney Airport with her millionaire boyfriend Nicholas Hammond, 25, on Tuesday.

    The tennis ace beamed as she wandered through the terminal, concealing her hand under a large straw hat as she was joined by her mother Oracene Price, 65, and sister Isha, 42.

    A representative for Venus however told the MailOnline that they are  not engaged.

    Opting for a casual ensemble to complement her sparkling jewellery, she donned a pair of skintight black leggings which accentuated her slender frame.

    The seven-time Grand Slam winner teamed her pin-flaunting pants with a grey hoodie that featured fleece lining as she hid her ring-clad hand out of view.

    Venus attempted to go incognito as she walked through the terminal, covering her hair with a colourful baseball cap and holding a beach hat over her ring finger.

    The US sports star appeared in jovial spirits as she waited at check-in resting her diamond-clad hand on her hip.

    While all eyes were on her sparkling hand, Venus’ beau Nicholas donned a wine-coloured T-shirt ahead of their long-haul flight.

    He teamed the piece with a pair of dark wash denims and opted to sport a pair of shades while walking through the airport.

    This is only one of a handful of times the couple has been spotted together, with tennis ace Venus showcasing her handsome millionaire boyfriend at the Australian Open.

    Venus was last seen with Nicholas in November in New Orleans, where she attended her sister Serena’s wedding to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. They held hands as they walked through the city.

    And according to PageSix, they looked happy at a December dinner in NYC.

    ‘They were cuddled up the entire time they were inside the restaurant, even kissing while waiting to be seated and continuing the affection at their table,’ said a source.

    Hammond is an heir to Walter Annenberg’s TV Guide fortune. ‘He’s a wealthy financier who goes between California and New York,’ said a friend.

    And sources confirm he is no ‘gold digger’ as he has plenty of money of his own. Their 12-year age difference doesn’t bother him either.

    Although notoriously private, the pair are ‘head over heels for each other’ according to PageSix.

    The publication also reported that the tennis star and muscular hunk have regularly meet up in Palm Beach, Florida over the past several months.

    ‘Nicky has met up with Venus in Palm Beach, where his family has a $20 million mansion as well as in the Hamptons, where they have a $20 million house,’ said the source.

    And it has impressed her that he has not bragged about his relationship with the athlete. ‘She likes that he’s very private,’ added the source.

    Venus has previously dated model Elio Pis, 29, for a year after they met in 2012 when he modelled for her EleVen fashion line.

    Prior to her romance with the hunky Cuban, Venus was in a serious relationship with golfer Hank Kuehne for three years before they broke up in 2010 and he went on to marry his second wife Andy in 2011.

    The sighting comes after her younger sister Serena Williams welcomed her first child Alexis Jr. in September with husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

    Earlier this month, she  revealed that she was plagued by health problems and almost died after she welcomed daughter into the world four months ago.

    She wrote on Facebook, though, that the whole ordeal has given her strength and ‘made me appreciate women — both women with and without kids — even more.’

    The tennis champ shared: ‘I didn’t expect that sharing our family’s story of Olympia’s birth and all of complications after giving birth would start such an outpouring of discussion from women – especially black women – who have faced similar complications and women whose problems go unaddressed.’

    She continued: ‘These aren’t just stories: according to the CDC, (Center for Disease Control) black women are over 3 times more likely than White women to die from pregnancy – or childbirth-related causes.

    ‘We have a lot of work to do as a nation and I hope my story can inspire a conversation that gets us to close this gap.

    ‘Let me be clear: EVERY mother, regardless of race, or background deserves to have a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.’

    Serena, who married her baby’s father Alexis, in November added: ‘I personally want all women of all colors to have the best experience they can have.

    ‘My personal experience was not great but it was MY experience and I’m happy it happened to me.  It made me stronger and it made me appreciate women – both women with and without kids – even more. We are powerful!!!.’

    She closed out: ‘I want to thank all of you who have opened up through online comments and other platforms to tell your story. I encourage you to continue to tell those stories. This helps. We can help others. Our voices are our power.’

    Covering the February issue of Vogue with her baby, Serena revealed inside that small blood clots were discovered on her lungs soon after she gave birth.

    A pulmonary embolism resulted in bouts of coughing so severe that her cesarean wound reopened. She was dealt with another blow when doctors discovered a large hematoma and she was bedridden for six weeks.

    It was a red Monday for Novak Djokovic, as the 14th seed was shown the door by 21 year old little known South Korean player Hyeon Chung.

    Novak Djokovic began this Australian Open by trying to rally his fellow pros over pay and conditions, and he ended it being made redundant in the fourth round by a 21-year-old outsider.

    The returning ex-world No 1 was however  shocked 7-6 7-5 7-6 by Korean Hyeon Chung, who put in a remarkably composed display when faced with the distraction of the Serb seeming to be struggling again with elbow problems.

    Djokovic summoned the trainer on for arm treatment in the first set, but was able to mount something of a comeback in that, and again in the second set when the world No 58 was in the ascendancy.

    Chung will next  face world No 97 Tennys Sandgren in last eight.

    There will now be a completely unforeseeable quarter-final between two players with an aggregate ranking of 155, Chung and American outsider Tennys Sandgren, who earlier knocked out fifth seed Dominic Thiem.

    That Djokovic could not mount a title challenge was not entirely surprising, as he has been out for more than six months, and his revamped serve was particularly askew early on, delivering nine double faults in all.

    The bespectacled Chung, who originally was steered towards tennis because his parents believed it would help his eyesight, is a rare tennis talent from a country better known for its golf.

    He has been considered a strong prospect for several years, and in November won the inaugural ATP ‘NextGen’ championships in Milan.

    Djokovic a dejected six-time Melbourne Park champion afterwards described his elbow as ‘not great’, and said he would be having it scanned again. ‘It’s frustrating when you have that much time and you don’t heal properly,’ he said.  ‘I will have to talk to my team and have to reassess everything.

    Roger Federer is no stranger to performing superhuman feats on the tennis court so it wasn’t a surprise when he and Milos Raonic were joined by a couple of superheroes during ‘Kids Day’ ahead of the Australian Open.

    As the two tennis stars limbered up in front of a packed arena, Marvel heroes Spider-Man and Thor had the chance to show off their skills with the racket during the family-friendly event.

    Caroline Wozniacki and Novak Djokovic also joined in with the activities during the light-hearted event in Melbourne.

    The action-packed annual ‘Kids Day’ saw a huge turnout as the crowd was treated to dancing, mini-games and the main stars themselves on Saturday.

    The weekend event was free to all spectators who have a Open ticket, ahead of the Grand Slam tournament next week.

    Federer will be looking to defend his Australian Open title once the event begins on Monday.

    The Open has already seen a number of high-profile stars pull out due to injury as Andy Murray and Serena Williams are unable to compete.

    Defending champion Federer who is current world number two opens his Aussie open campaign Tuesday against Slovenia’s Aljaz  Bedene in the first round, while world number one Rafael Nadal opens against Victor Estrella Burgos.

    In the women’s draw, Australia’s leading hopes fared well but some of the rising stars copped nasty draws — none more so than teenager Destanee Aiava, who will face top seed and current world No.1 Simona Halep in the first round.

    This year’s Australian Open field is wide open following the decision by 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams not to defend her title in Melbourne, saying she was not quite ready to compete after giving birth in September.

    Serena Williams has revealed there is more to her daughter’s name than meets the eye.

    Williams gave birth to Alexis Olympia Ohanian on September 1 and was pregnant when she won her 23rd grand slam at the Australian Open in January.

    In a series of tweets, the 36-year-old claimed the fact her baby shares her initials with the Melbourne event is no accident.

    “I’m having a hard time posting about anything that does not involve Alexis Olympia or something to do with her,” she confessed.

    “Fun fact: My daughter’s initials are AO as in the Aussie Open she won with me.”

    Serena recently posted a heartfelt thank you to her mother, Oracene Price, for being a role model who helped the new mother through the many challenges of her life.

    “I hope to teach my baby Alexis Olympia the same, and have the same fortitude you have had,” Williams wrote on Reddit, after recounting the times “haters” questioned her success.

    The tennis star shared her hopes and wishes for her little girl.

    “Dear Mom, You are one of the strongest women I know. I was looking at my daughter (OMG, yes, I have a daughter) and she has my arms and legs! My exact same strong, muscular, powerful, sensational arms and body. I don’t know how I would react if she has to go through what I’ve gone through since I was a 15 year old and even to this day

    “I’ve been called man because I appeared outwardly strong. It has been said that that I use drugs (No, I have always had far too much integrity to behave dishonestly in order to gain an advantage). It has been said I don’t belong in Women’s sports – that I belong in Men’s – because I look stronger than many other women do. (No, I just work hard and I was born with this badass body and proud of it) …

    “I am proud we were able to show them what some women look like. We don’t all look the same. We are curvy, strong, muscular, tall, small, just to name a few, and all the same: we are women and proud! (sic)”

    Serena went on to thank her mother for being the “role model she needed”.

    “You are so classy, I only wish I could take your lead. I am trying, though, and God is not done with me yet. I have a LONG way to go, but thank you.

    “Thank you for being the role model I needed to endure all the hardships that I now regard as a challenges – ones that I enjoy. I hope to teach my baby Alexis Olympia the same, and have the same fortitude you have had.

    “Promise me, Mom, that you will continue to help. I’m not sure if I am as meek and strong as you are yet. I hope to get there one day. I love you dearly. (sic)”

    Williams, 36, has spoken of her “outrageous” plans to defend her title at the Australian Open in January, less than five months after giving birth.

    Good friend Caroline Wozniacki recently said the new mother remained “focused” on her comeback.

    “I think she’s going to do a strong comeback but I think at the same time she’s enjoying being a mum as well and getting that whole experience. I think it’s very special,” Wozniacki said.

    Serena Williams says she revealed her pregnancy by accident, after mistakenly uploading a photograph on Snapchat.

    The 23-time Grand Slam winner posted a picture on the social media app, posing in a mirror with the message: “20 weeks”, before deleting it, with her publicist later confirming the news.

    Williams, 35, said she took photographs every week to track the pregnancy.

    “I was just saving them [for myself]” she said. “I’ve been so good about it, but this was the one time it slipped.”

    The world number one, who is due to give birth in the autumn, said she discovered she was pregnant just two days before the Australian Open in January.

    The American went on to beat sister Venus in the final and win her an Open-era record 23rd Grand Slam singles title.

    “It wasn’t very easy,” she said. “You hear all these stories about people when they’re pregnant – they get sick, they get really tired, really stressed out.

    “I had to really take all that energy and put it in a paper bag, so to say, and throw it away.

    “Pregnant or not, no-one knew and I was supposed to win that tournament. Every time I play, I’m expected to win. If I don’t win, it’s actually much bigger news.”

    Williams, who is taking maternity leave for the rest of the 2017 season, said there was no change to her plan to return to the tour as a mother next year.

    “I definitely plan on coming back. I’m not done yet,” said Williams, who credited 36-year-old sister Venus for inspiration.

    “If she’s still playing, I know I can play. This [motherhood] is just a new part of my life. My baby’s going to be in the stands and hopefully cheering for me.”

    On Tuesday, Williams called Ilie Nastase’s comments about her unborn child “racist”.

    Nastase, a former world number one and two-time Grand Slam winner, was heard speculating whether Williams’ child would be “chocolate with milk?” at a news conference before Romania’s Fed Cup tie with Great Britain last week.

    Responding to the controversy Williams said: “It disappoints me to know we live in a society where people like Ilie Nastase can make such racists comments towards myself and unborn child”.

    An investigation has been launched into the Romanian’s behaviour after a series of outbursts at the Fed Cup match against Great Britain.

    Tennis great Roger Federer received a huge reception on his return to Switzerland after his astonishing triumph over Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open on Sunday

    Federer arrived at Zurich Airport on Tuesday and was met by his biggest fans as held the Australian Open trophy aloft.

    Unsurprisingly, the 18-time Grand Slam winner was in a cheerful mood as he posed for photos with fans following his exertions in Melbourne over the past fortnight.

    He has returned to his native country just two days after he claimed yet another Grand Slam title in an enthralling tie with his greatest tennis rival Nadal.

    Federer beat the Spaniard, who has 14 Grand Slam titles to his name, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the final on Sunday in the Rod Laver Arena.

    Speaking after Sunday’s drama, in which he claimed his fifth Australian Open win and became the oldest holder of a major title for 46 years, Federer paid homage to his former Australian coaches for helping shape his successful career.

    The 35-year-old paid tribute to former coach Peter Carter, who passed away in a car accident in South Africa a week before Federer’s 21st birthday. He believes that Carter had the biggest impact on his career.

    ‘Peter Carter had the biggest impact on me in terms of my technique. That’s what so many people talk about,’ Federer told Australian Associated Press in an interview.

    Roger Federer  has defeated Rafael Nadal  by 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to win the Australian open.

    Federer  won his 18th major title by Nadal in the 6th game to level the set at 3-all.

    In his speech after the victory, Federer stated: ” I am out of words but I would like to congratulate Nadal on an amzing comeback. I don’t think either of us thought we would be in the finals when we were at your academy five years ago. I would just like to thank my team . Its been a different last six months. I didnt think I was going to make it here. I would also like to thank Nadal’s team, my wife, family and all of you here.”

    As the major sponsor of Australian Open 2017, Kia Motors handed over a fleet of 110 official tournament vehicles to Tennis Australia during a ceremony in Melbourne attended by executives from Kia Motors Australia and Tennis Australia, as well as Kia’s global brand ambassador and former Australian Open champion, Rafael Nadal. This year celebrates Kia’s 16th consecutive sponsorship of the Australian Open, and Kia will roll out various on- and off-line programs for tennis fans around the world.

    World number one Andy Murray has lost out  in  fourth round  to 50th-ranked Mischa Zverev.

     

    Murray was never expected to be troubled by the 29-year-old German, who has never won an ATP title, but he lost 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in his earliest Melbourne departure in eight years.

     

    Zverev’s serve-volley triumph blows the draw even wider open with the top two seeds out before the quarter-finals for the first time in a Grand Slam since the 2004 French Open.

     

    Among the beneficiaries could be Roger Federer, who plays Kei Nishikori later, and Rafael Nadal, who downed Zverev’s younger brother Alexander in a titanic five-setter on Saturday.

     

    Alexander, 19, was watching courtside as Zverev stretched to a series of elastic volleys to halt the nonplussed Murray. Nearly half of Zverev’s points were from serve and volleys.

     

    “I was like in a little coma, just serving and volleying my way through it. There were a few points where I didn’t know how I pulled it off but somehow I made it,” Zverev said.

     

    With the defeat, Murray extends his curse at the Australian Open, where he has been runner-up five times — losing four finals to Djokovic — without lifting the trophy.

     

    He also makes the earliest exit for an Australian Open top seed in 14 years, since Lleyton Hewitt fell at the same stage in 2003.

     

    “I’ve had tough losses in my career in the past. I’ve come back from them. This is a tough one,” Murray said.

    “I’m sure I’ll come back okay from it. But right now I’m obviously very down because I wanted to go further in this event, and it wasn’t to be.”

    Coco Vandeweghe was the first player into the round of 16 at the Australian Open when she recovered from an early break in the third set to beat Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 on Friday.

    Vandeweghe converted her only break to take the first set but Bouchard, who reached the Australian Open and French Open semifinals and the Wimbledon final in 2014, leveled the match with two breaks in a dominant second set.

    The 22-year-old Canadian broke Vandeweghe’s serve to open the third set and appeared to be in control until the American rallied.

    After holding in the key eighth game of the third set, when she saved four break points in a game that went to deuce eight times, Vandeweghe had the benefit of serving first to establish with no tiebreakers in the deciding set.

    She easily held for a 6-5 lead and then, after Bouchard had a game point, went on a roll to close with a big backhand winner on her first match point.

    Vandeweghe has reached the quarterfinals and the fourth round in the last two years at Wimbledon, but her run to the third round in Australia in 2016 was her best at any major not played on grass.

    ‘It’s just another opponent on the way to achieving my goal,’ Vandeweghe said of an intense match against a player who was ranked as high as No 5 in 2014 but hasn’t gone past the third round of a Grand Slam tournament since slipping and falling in the locker room during the 2015 US Open. ‘Anyway I could get it done – I just wanted to get the result. Achieved my goal.’

    Vandeweghe’s new doubles partner, Martina Hingis, cheered her on throughout the match. Afterward, the American joked that Hingis might scold her for playing ‘too long to be fresh for the doubles.’

    The No 35-ranked Vandeweghe will next play defending champion Angelique Kerber after she beat Kristyna Pliskova, the twin sister of US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova.
