    Two die in Abia fatal auto crash

    Two persons have been confirmed dead in a fatal auto accident that occurred in Abia State.

    The accident, our correspondent gathered to have occurred at the Islala Ngwa Junction axis of Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway.

    According to reports, the accident occurred around 3:00 pm on Friday.

    The driver of the ill-fated vehicle was reportedly speeding while carrying heavy loads.

    The accident was attributed to over speeding, which was why the driver reportedly lost control of the car and skidded off the major road before it somersaulted inside the nearby bush.

    According to eyewitnesses, the two persons that died were suspected to be the driver and another passenger.

    Sources said, men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who later arrived evacuated the deceased persons from the accident scene.

    As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Command were yet to release an official statement.

    A supposed day of joy turned tragic in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State yesterday as a police officer and intending groom, SP Mustapha Garba Gumau, lost his life in an auto crash less than an hour before his wedding.

    Our correspondent gathered that the late officer, who was the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Gamawa Division, was on his way from Gumau to Magaman-Gumau for his wedding fatiha slated for 10 am but died around 9 am when the vehicle conveying him and his friends crashed.

    The accident occurred at Bargan Tsamiya, a village along the route, as the Mercedes Benz car they were travelling in veered off the road and collided with an oncoming Opel Vectra.

    The crash claimed the lives of the groom and two of his friends — Shuaibu Umar and Sulaiman Musa — on the spot, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

    Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesperson of the Bauchi State Police Command, CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, described the development as devastating.

    He said: “The Command is in mourning. SP Mustapha Garba was on his way to attend his own wedding when the unfortunate incident occurred.

    “He was in the company of three friends in a Mercedes Benz.

    “At Bargan Tsamiya, the vehicle lost control, veered off its lane, and had a head-on collision with an Opel Vectra coming from the opposite direction.”

    Wakil added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Sani-Omolori, upon receiving the news, immediately directed the Divisional Police Officer of Toro Division to mobilise and evacuate the victims to Toro General Hospital.

    “Sadly, a medical doctor at the hospital confirmed the groom and two others dead. Their bodies have been released to their families for burial,” he said.

    The Commissioner has since extended condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for divine strength to bear the loss.

    The Nation reports that the tragic incident has plunged Gumau and Magaman-Gumau communities into mourning as residents who had gathered for the ceremony were left to grapple with shock and sorrow.

    12 burnt to death in Benin-Auchi auto crash

    Tragedy struck on the Benin-Auchi highway yesterday morning as 12 passengers were burnt to death in a fatal accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck.

    Cyril Mathew, Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who confirmed the incident, said the crash occurred around 5 am at Igueoviobo community, near an army checkpoint on the highway.

    According to the FRSC official, the bus, which departed Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and was heading to Benin City, collided with an oncoming truck en route Auchi.

    “The entire occupants of the bus were killed in the crash.

    “The accident likely resulted from fatigue, as the driver might have dozed off, leading to the collision,” he said.

    Following the impact, he said, the bus was engulfed in flames, making it impossible to save the victims.

    Matthew noted, however, that the FRSC authorities were able to identify the deceased through the vehicle’s manifest and had since contacted their families.

    He explained that the truck driver and his assistant, fondly called ‘Motor Boy’, escaped unhurt.

    The FRSC boss once again urged drivers to avoid fatigue while on long journeys, advising them to stop and rest whenever they feel tired to prevent such tragedies.

    Two persons died while one sustained injuries in an auto crash that occurred on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway yesterday.

    Mr William Manga, the Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the accident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry.

    Manga said that the accident occurred at about 3.27 pm at Age-Mowo axis of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

    “Our personnel were alerted about the accident at about 3.30 pm and we got to the scene at 3.36 pm, six minutes after they were alerted,” he said.

    Manga said the accident involved a Toyota Matrix car with registration number KSF 235 JE and a Bajaj Tricycle with no plate number.

    “Two of the three occupants inside the tricycle died instantly while one sustained injuries,” he said.

    The FRSC commander attributed the accident to dangerous overtaking resulting in head on collision.

    He said the injured person was taken to the General Hospital in Badagry for medical attention while the corpses of the deceased were deposited at the mortuary of the hospital.

    The unit commander urged motorists plying the Lagos-Badagry Expressway to remain cautious of safety and obey traffic regulations on the one-lane expressway.

    Sixty-Four Nigerians have been confirmed dead in multiple tragedies across the country over the last 72 hours, the latest being 30 people killed in a supremacy battle between militias in Benue State on Thursday.

    Rescue operations at the scene of a boat mishap in Bayelsa State have led to the recovery of 18 bodies while five others drowned in a similar accident in Jigawa State.

    A third sea tragedy claimed the life of a naval officer who was at the head of a team to rescue 59 people whose dredging vessel was about to go under a turbulent Okpobo river in Bonny, Rivers State.

    The Benue attack occurred at Ayati village  in Ukum Local Government area on Thursday.

    Information, Culture and Tourism Commissioner Matthew Aboh told journalists in Makurdi yesterday that the killings stemmed from a supremacy fight between the local militias in  the area.

    He added that corpses of the victims were still being recovered from the bush.

    The commissioner said a total of 30 bodies were recovered after the attack, adding that more bodies were still being recovered in the bushes.

    He blamed the killings on the battle for supremacy between the local militias within the area.

    “I was informed yesterday night through the telephone that bandits were attacking and killing people at Ayati village.

    “Today I confirmed that the number of persons killed as I talk to you was 30 .They are still recovering corpses in the bushes so the number is yet to be ascertained.

    “In Ayati village what I heard is that one of the bandits’ maternal village is Ayati and the other one’s maternal village is Tine-nune, Mbatyem.

    “All of them are tough and fighting themselves. So anytime any one goes to the maternal village of the other and kills people the other will retaliate. So it is reprisal upon reprisal attacks,” he said.

    An eyewitness Unande Iorpuu told The Nation that about 60 gunmen stormed Ayati at about 4 pm on the fateful day.

    He said:”They came on motorcycles from Sai Road and immediately opened fire on residents.

    “The gunmen moved from one house to another, shooting and killing. Some peoples died at the spot , while others died on their way to the hospital in Zaki Baim.

    Many others were wounded.

    He said the gunmen fled the scene once they accomplished their mission.

    This is the second attack on Ayati village in within one month.

    Eight persons were killed in the first attack last month.

    Gov. Hyacinth Alia expressed sadness over the attack and wondered why such incidents

    despite a strong security presence.

    Alia called on security agencies to improve their surveillance and ensure that vulnerable communities were not left unguarded.

    The governor condoled with the families that lost their loved ones in the unfortunate attack and prayed God to comfort them.

    He assured the people that his administration would continue to explore both discreet and open measures with a view to ensuring that Sankera retraces her path of peace and lives happily again.

    18 dead bodies recovered, two missing, 33 passengers rescued

    Rescue workers and volunteers have recovered 18 bodies of victims of Wednesday’s boat mishap on  Ezetu l community river in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

    The State Chairman, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Mr. Ipigansi Ogonibatold The  Nation yesterday that his union in collaboration with the state government sent three boats to convey the recovered corpses to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, the state capital.

    Ogoniba said the ill-fated commercial boat carried 51 passengers and an unknown number of crew members since their names were not in the manifest at their disposal.

    Thirty-three passengers were rescued.

    The engine of the wooden boat, popularly known as ‘Denghe market boat’, exploded in the middle of the river on Wednesday evening and sank immediately.

    The boat was said to have left Ezetu 1 community around 3pm for Okubie when the onboard engine they were using caught fire and exploded.

    Meanwhile, Governor Douye Diri has expressed sadness over the boat accident.

    Governor Diri, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, expressed the condolences of the state government to families of victims of the mishap.

    The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has deployed a team to probe the cause of the mishap. in Bayelsa State.

    Managing Director of NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, while condoling with the families affected by the tragedy, assured the public of timely updates as the investigation progressed.

    The Authority in a statement yesterday y by its AGM Corporate Affairs, Suleiman Makama, expressed solidarity with the Government of Bayelsa State and the bereaved families, offering prayers for the souls of the departed.

    Five dead, 15 missing in Jigawa canoe mishap

    A similar canoe mishap in Jigawa State claimed five lives, according to the Police Command in the state.

    Fifteen other passengers were missing, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Lawan Shiisu said.

    Mr Shiisu stated that the incident occurred at Nahuce in Taura Local Government Area (LGA) of the state on Thursday.

    Navy rescues 59 drowning in turbulent waters civilians, loses officer

     Swift intervention by the Nigerian Navy (NN) however saved 59 civilians from a drowning dredging vessel, MV AMBIKA 4, on a turbulent Okpobo river in Bonny, Rivers State.

    However, the leader of the operation and Base Operations Officer (BOO) Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base BONNY, Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, lost his life during the operation that lasted 10 hours.

    The Nation gathered that the dredging vessel which was contracted to  Sterling Global Oil Limited at Okpobo field was at the risk of sinking near the river entrance when a distress call was made to the Nigerian Navy around midnight of July 29.

    The base subsequently deployed a rescue team comprising 10 armed personnel in two Interceptor Boats.

    It was gathered that the rescued party could not approach the distressed boat owning to turbulent wave and requested another squadron of three boats for reinforcement.

    To ensure quick evaluation of all the people onboard the vessel, the navy also deployed NNS GONGOLA while drones, helicopters including one from the Nigerian Air Force were utilized for search and rescue.

    While all 59 crew of the dredger were successfully rescued, the leader of the operation slipped and fell into the dangerous river.

    The Director of Naval Information (DINFO), Commodore Aiwiyor Adams-Aliu, said yesterday that while  all 59 crew were rescued successfully Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza “paid the supreme price.”

    “He fell overboard accidentally during the rescue operation which lasted for about 10 hours from midnight of 29 July 2024 to 1000 hours on 30 July 2024.

    “The Nigerian Navy deeply mourns the loss of Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza. who bravely risked his life to save others.

    “Lieutenant Commander Gwaza was a well trained combat diver whose painful death reflects the risks and sacrifices of Nigerian Navy personnel towards the safety of Nigeria’s maritime domain. “His dedication and sacrifice will forever be remembered.”

    A crash involving a truck and a Golf salon at Gwargwaje community of Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State earlyb yesterday claimed 11 lives while four others were injured, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said.

    “Preliminary investigation revealed that the golf, carrying 11 people, all males, had engaged on a route violation, with no headlights and collided with an oncoming MAN truck with four people on board,” Kaduna Sector Commander, FRSC, Kabir Nadabo, said. Nadabo said the accident occurred at 05:50 a.m.

    Fresh facts have emerged about the family that died in an auto crash while travelling for Christmas celebration.

    Contrary to reports that eight people died in the incident, The Nation investigation revealed that the causality figure was seven.

    In fact, checks revealed that 13 people were involved in the auto crash. Six people survived the incident.

    Eyewitnesses who spoke with The Nation narrated how they helped to pull out rods which pierced the bodies of the eight family members involved in the auto crash which occurred on December 29, 2023 at the Amanwozuzu junction in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State.

    The family was traveling home with 13 persons for the New Year celebration when their Sienna car Reg no ACH 318 AA ash colour rammed into a stationary truck transporting rods.

    Our findings revealed that the family took off from their residence at Umuerim in Umudibia Autonomous Community, Owerri West LGA and were heading to their hometown at Ehime Mbano when the accident occurred.

    The deceased were all members of a single family, including the father, John Anyanwu, wife, and children.

    A visit to their residence at Umuerim showed quietude as neighbours wore sad looks. 

    Expressing deep grief over the accident,  one of the neighbours,  Ijeoma Opara said she saw the late Mrs. Anyanwu a day before the accident when she came to the Anglican Church inside the Nekede Federal Polytechnic compound where they both worshipped  to carry out church service.

    “When we  finished cleaning the church compound, she asked me if I knew the way  that leads to their residence though the back gate. I didn’t  know we were having the last encounter, ” she said sobbing.

    One of the youth leaders in the area who gave his name simply as Udoaka stated that the rod pierced through the bodies of the victims, and the vehicle had to be broken to bring out the lifeless bodies of the family members.

    “We pulled the lifeless bodies from the rod, it was a gory sight as the human flesh was forcefully pulled out of the rod with blood. My brother I don’t want to recount the experience, I will never wish my enemy such a horrifying experience,” he said sadly.

    Additionally, another eyewitness, Chief Matthias Ngerem said that the stationary truck carrying the rods was blocking the road, emphasizing that the tragedy could have been averted if the truck had not parked on the road.

    But the Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander, Evaristus Ebeniro told our correspondent that preliminary investigation revealed  that the stationary truck was off the road when the driver of the sienna car who was on high speed rammed into the truck.

     “Our preliminary investigation which is ongoing shows that the truck driver was adding water into his radiator probably due to the issue of overheating when the man who as eyewitnesses confirmed was on high speed rammed into the truck.

     “He said the Sienna driver who was said to be on a high speed could have been distracted by the children. How can you carry a whole family and you are speeding? It was possible it was too late when he saw the truck.

    “However, we are still investigating the accident under what is called Crash Investigation, a thorough investigation which could be tendered in court.”

    According to him, “the report will soon be ready as it takes one week to conclude the Crash Investigation.”

    He explained that the vehicles had been moved to the police station which was close to the scene of the accident while the investigation continues.

    Contrary to reports that eight persons were killed in the auto crash, he revealed that it was 13 persons that were involved in the accident with seven dead and six injured.

    “13 persons were in the Sienna car, seven died, six were critically injured,

    In all, two adults and 11 children were in the car, ” he stated.

    We are yet to ascertain the identities of the victims involved in the accident, but we are carrying out as I said earlier a thorough crash investigation on the registration of the vehicles on our database.”

    Though the government of Imo State has not announced specific measures to prevent similar accidents, the FRSC Commander said that the government would continue to enlighten the public, particularly road users on the need to avoid over speeding.

    He said in general, the government typically works with law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities to improve road safety through measures such as enforcing traffic laws, maintaining road infrastructure, and conducting public awareness campaigns.

    However, the state Police Commissioner, CP Aboki Danjuma, who spoke to The Nation through the police spokesman, Henry Okoye, said that the command was investigating the truck driver with a view to arraigning him if found guilty.

    “We are investigating to check if the truck was obstructing traffic and at the end, we are going to arraign the person that caused the accident with appropriate charges.”

    He said, however, that proper parking and adherence to road safety regulations could have potentially averted the tragedy.

    “This highlights the importance of following road safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of all road users.”

    He said the lifeless bodies of the corpse have been deposited at the mortuary for preservation while discreet investigation is ongoing to ascertain the remote cause of the accident.

    The Commissioner of Police Imo State Command prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims that lost their lives  in the tragic incident and their family the fortitude to bear the loss.

    He cautioned motorists to obey traffic rules while driving and avoid over speeding which is the major cause of most road accidents.

    Two persons died and two others were injured in an accident involving a petrol-laden tanker and a Mercedes Benz Bus at Agu-Awka Junction, Awka, Anambra.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited the scene of the crash gathered that the tanker which was Enugu-bound ran into the bus loaded with food items.

    The bus was trying to join the Expressway from the junction leading to Old road.

    The accident occurred at about 1.10 a.m. on Wednesday.

    A combined team of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Fire Service personnel was seen cordoning off the area, diverting traffic and ensuring that fire did not inflame again.

    Mr Andrew Kumapayi, Sector Commander of the FRSC told NAN that his team arrived the crash scene 10 minutes after the incident was reported for rescue.

    Kumapayi said four persons were involved including three males and one female.

    He blamed the crash on speed violation and loss of control.

    “About 1.15 a.m. this morning, we got a report of a crash involving a petrol tanker marked YLA 170 XM with product and a Mercedes Benz bus with Reg. No: BKL 80 XA at Immigration Junction, Agu Awka.

    “Four persons were involved; two died on the spot and two including a man and a woman have been taken to Chukwuemeka Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for medical attention,’’ he said.

    Kumapayi called on drivers and owners of articulated vehicles plying the Anambra route to maintain their vehicles and observe traffic rules and regulations at all times.

    He warned that his command would not fold its arms and watch motorists waste the lives and property of innocent citizens on the highway

    NAN reports that the sector commander alongside other stakeholders in traffic management held a town hall meeting with truck drivers in Onitsha on Monday on ways to curb carnage.

    The command had decided to commence strict enforcement of articulated vehicle driver’s compliance with rules in the state from April.

    The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that 44 of its personnel were involved in auto-crash on Friday while they were on their way for election duties.

    According to the police, the accident occurred in Gwagwalada Area Council of Abuja.

    The injured personnel who are all attached to the operations department of the FCT Police Command were being conveyed in one of the big police trucks when the accident occurred.

    The police said 36 of them were immediately rushed to Airforce Base Hospital, six to Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Hospital while two were rushed to Police Hospital in Area 1, Garki, for treatment.

    Thirty-three out of the 44 injured were treated and discharged while 11 were on admission at various hospitals in Abuja.

    Some of the personnel injured are: Inspector Luka Hananiya, Sergeant Shettima Solomon, Inspector Maude Yusuf, Sergeant Musa Dahiru and Inspector Mumini Mohammed.

    Speaking after a visit to some of the injured police officers in the hospital, the acting Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Mohammed Adamu, said, “We decided to deploy our men to polling units because of the elections. On their way, a team that was deployed to Gwagwalada had an accident and a lot of them were seriously injured.

    “They are at the trauma section of the National hospital where some of them are admitted. They have various degrees of injury, ranging from fractured to head injury that require further investigation which I have ordered that they be taken to other hospital with the necessary equipment to treat them. We are here to make sure that they are given proper treatment to recover.”

    The Senator representing Kogi Central,,Mr. Ahmed Ogembe, yesterday  survived an auto crash along the Abuja-Lokoja road on his way to Okene for today’s elections.

    The senator’s spokesman, Mr. Duke Opeyemi, told  the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja that the accident occurred at Gegu community in the Kotonkarfe LGA of Kogi State  at about 9am.

    Ogembe is seeking re-election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the National Assembly election.

    According to Opeyemi, his bulletproof car somersaulted several times, but the senator and other occupants of the vehicle came out alive and unhurt.

    The senator expressed gratitude to God for saving his life and that of the people with him.

    He prayed for more of God’s protection over his life, his family and the entire people of his constituents and Kogi State at large.

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Osun on Tuesday said nine persons died in various road accidents in the state in January.

    The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Peter Oke, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Osogbo that the accidents were caused by speeding, wrongful overtaking and carelessness of drivers.

    “The total number of road traffic accidents for the month of January was 22 leading to the death of nine persons,” he said.

    Oke noted that 2151 road traffic offenders were apprehended, out of which 218 were educated and cautioned on the sensitivity of road driving during the period under review.

    The sector commander further said that no fewer than 1403 persons were issued with driver’s licence in the month under review.

    He added that the command executed 12 radio and eight television programmes to educate and enlighten the public on the dangers associated with dangerous driving.

    Oke warned motorists to always obey traffic regulations, noting that the command would not spare any person caught flouting the law.
