  • Enugu auto-crash claims 5 lives – Police

    No fewer than five persons have lost their lives in an auto-crash in Enugu in the late hours of Thursday in Enugu, the Police Command in Enugu State has said.

    The Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, SP Ebere Amaraizu, who disclosed this in a statement in Enugu on Friday, said that the accident happened in late hours of Thursday.

    He said that the accident, which involved two vehicles took place on Enugu-Abakiliki Expressway, opposite Promise-land in Emene,outskirt of Enugu, the state capital.

    “The fatal accident occurred when one Sienna vehicle was attempting to overtake another vehicle and in the process collided with tipper lorry carrying sand from the opposite direction.

    “The collision left five of the occupants of the Sienna car, believed to be traveling home for the burial of their loved ones, fatally injured and unconscious due to the impact of the accident.

    “They were promptly rushed to Annunciation Hospital, Emene for medical attention and later, where they were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.Their corpses have been deposited at the same hospital mortuary for further necessary action,’’ he said.

    Amaraizu , who said police operatives had commenced action with a view to contacting the relations of the deceased, advised members of the public to be safety conscious while driving to avoid of loss of lives and property.

    The Police Command in Enugu have confirmed the death of a family of seven in an autocrash which occurred at Ugwu-Onyeama on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway on Sunday morning.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday, said it occurred at about 8 a.m on the Enugu axis of the expressway.

    Amaraizu said the accident involved a Toyota Camry with registration number CM960FKJ and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number ENU75YY, belonging to a mass transit company.

    He said the two vehicles that were on top speed collided in one lane of the expressway.

    According to him, seven passengers in the Toyota car who are members of the same family and one other from the bus lost their lives in the accident.

    The police spokesperson said their bodies had been deposited in the mortuary of the Enugu State University of Teaching Hopsital, (ESUTH), Parklane.

    He said four others sustained injuries in the crash and were receiving medical attention at the same hospital while investigation into the incident had commenced.

    Ogun auto crash claims two lives

    Two persons were confirmed dead in a road accident involving a blue Toyota Corolla car and a Toyota picnic bus at Olodo area, on Abeokuta/Ibadan Expressway in Ogun.

    Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun, confirmed the accident to newsmen in Abeokuta on Tuesday.

    Akinbiyi explained that the accident occurred on Monday evening due to wrong overtaking by the driver of the Toyota Corolla car.

    He stated that the two vehicles had three occupants each, saying that the dead were the drivers of both vehicles.

    Akinbiyi said, “The accident involved a Toyota Corolla car with registration number KSF 846 EF and a Toyota picnic bus with registration number RLG 61 AA.

    “The driver of the Toyota Corolla car tried to overtake the Toyota Picnic space bus which resulted in collision that led to the crash.

    “The vehicles had three passengers each when the accident occurred, three male and three female but the drivers of both vehicles died in the accident.”

    The official said that the victims were taken to Omo Arewa Clinic in Odeda while one female in critical condition was rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
