  • Nigerians spent N304m on ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in first week

Nigerians spent over N304 million on Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in the films first seven days across cinemas in the country.

According to data provided by Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) through their instagram page @ceanigeria, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ debuted with N22.5 million in Nigeria on opening day.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the superhero movie went on to make N188 million in its first weekend.

The Marvel’s superhero flick is still leading the Nigerian chart even as it continues to break world records.

So far, the three-hour long film has broken the record for the biggest opening in Nigeria, a title previously held by ‘Black Panther’ which made N135.4 million in its first weekend.

NAN reports that according to box office reports, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has become the second-highest grossing film in the world, with an estimated $2.189 billion.

This record was cemented by the $619.7 million it has grossed domestically, which also eclipsed the $600.8 million ‘Titanic’ grossed in its initial theatrical run after opening in December 1997.

  • ‘Avengers: Endgame’ beats ‘Titanic’s $2.12bn box office record

After just 12 days in theaters worldwide, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has surpassed the 21-year global box office record of $2.128 billion held by Titanic.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that according to box office reports, the Marvel flick has become the second-highest grossing film in the world, with an estimated $2.189 billion.

This record was cemeneted by the $619.7 million it has grossed domestically, which also eclipsed the $600.8 million ‘Titanic’ grossed in its initial theatrical run after opening in December 1997.

The historical-romantic epic ‘Titanic’ also grossed an additional $58.6 million in re-releases in 2012 and 2017 which was noted by box office sales records.

Reports also show that ‘Avengers’ has rapidly become the one of the highest grossing films ever in China, with an astonishing $545.8 million since it opened there on April 24.

The movie broke every possible box office record when it debuted with $1.22 billion worldwide, including $357 million domestically.

The film has since eased off that blistering pace in the US and Canada, however, earning an estimated $145.8 million over its second weekend.

This figures fell a little short and could not quite pass the $149.2 million second weekend record set by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ over the Christmas holiday in 2015.

When factoring in ticket price inflation, Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ still has some ground to cover.

On the Box Office Mojo’s chart of inflation adjusted grosses, the best (if imperfect) measure of a film’s overall popularity with domestic audiences, Endgame ranks as roughly the 42nd highest grossing film of all time.

By comparison, when adjusting for inflation, Titanic grossed roughly $1.16 billion in theaters in the US and Canada in its initial release.

Due to varying ticket price inflation rates and unreliable record keeping, it is virtually impossible to reasonably adjust for box office inflation worldwide.

However, fans worldwide are hoping the movie breaks ‘Avatar’s box office records of $2.788 which it made from Dec. 2009 through Feb. 2010.

  • Niger Delta leaders urge Avengers not to resume attacks

Niger Delta leaders urge Avengers not to resume attacks

IJaw leaders in Warri, Delta State, have appealed to Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups not to resume attacks on oil facilities.

A body, the Warri Ijaw Peace Monitoring Group (WIPMG), warned that toeing the path of destruction of oil facilities would spell doom for residents.

Chief Patrick Bigha, WIPMG chairman, said in a statement yesterday: “We wish to call on agitating groups in the oil rich Niger Delta to explore non-violent means to engage governments and international oil companies.”

He said: “Resorting to the destruction of oil facilities will attract military actions and harassment of perceived enemies by the Federal Government.

“This call has become imperative, as we have observed that the military is swift in harassing innocent villagers, particularly communities along the oil rich Warri-Escravos area.

“We have noticed that the military and other security agencies have started plans to go after persons perceived as enemies of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“It is worthy of note that this method of the military has never helped the people, as it has worsened their precarious socio-economic situation.”

Bigha said the group believed that a peaceful resolution of the problems, which successive governments, including the present one, had acknowledged, would usher in development.

“The truth of the matter is that so much money has been expended on military actions without achieving peace. It has become a stock in trade of the military to use violence in dealing with the Niger Delta situation because they are gaining so much from such crude methods of resolving crises.

“We are aware of military men, who have made so much money from the problems in the region without addressing the main issues that brought about the problems.”

He said WIPMG was happy with the peace at Warri-Escravos route and appealed to agitating groups to embrace peaceful means while making demands.

  • Niger Delta youths disagree with avengers on violence

Niger Delta youths disagree with avengers on violence

NIGER Delta youths have urged the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) to permanently stop its continual threat to resume violent agitation in the region. In their communique, yesterday, the youths, who met in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, under the auspices of the Niger Delta Youth Leadership Forum (PANDLEAF) insisted that violence was an old-fashioned and archaic method of agitation.

The group in the communique signed by the National President, Mr. Richard Akinika and the group’s Secretary, Mr. Ubokobong Umoh, urged the avengers to have a rethink and show love to the region by continuing to sheathe their swords. Explaining one of the nine-point resolution, Akinika said the region was in dire need of development insisting that lovers of the Niger Delta should come together to seek ways to develop the region, instead of issuing threats to wreak havoc.

Akinika said non-violent agitation and intellectual engagements remained the best approach for the region’s quest for development, adding that the region had gone beyond arms struggle. The PANDLEAF President said: ”We strongly believe that the time for armed struggle is over. Life is in phases and so should our struggles be. We must be able to advance our agitations beyond that to the high grounds of intellectual and constructive engagement.

“In the alternative, we advocate a collective engagement of all stakeholders at a round-table, to forge common positions and fronts for further engagements with the Federal Government. “We should redirect our energy to advance a common regional fronts in an intellectual manner that will cause people to respect and listen to us. But sometimes, when you see the thing government does, to the shallow- minded, the best thing to do is to go the way of the gun because there are things that are going on that are not right. “You see what our host communities are going through, the environmental problems, the Ogoni clean up that has been promised our people, nothing is going on. An impatient mind may say, we must resist these things, they are not right, but our advice to our people is to avert war.

  • Niger Delta Avengers hail Akeredolu for Amnesty

Niger Delta Avengers hail Akeredolu for Amnesty

Militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) in Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas of Ondo State, yesterday lauded the Amnesty programme offered to it by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

NDA assured the state government of the determination of its members to lay down their arms for the peace and progress of the Niger Delta region.

A statement yesterday in Akure, the state capital, = by its leader, “General” Kaka Duku, hailed the state and the Federal governments for finding solutions to the problem in the coastal region.

The statement noted that various arms would be dropped at Arogbo, Igbekebo, Ugbonla and Igbokoda, covering Ilaje and Ese-Odo local government areas.

It expressed delight that it was incorporated into the Federal Government Amnesty.

NDA praised Akeredolu for making Ondo State benefit from the programme.

The group promised to sustain the peace and promote harmony among its people, assuring all of its cooperation with law enforcement agencies to protect the environment and its inhabitants.

It urged the state government to fulfil its promises through various welfare programmes, especially for unemployed youths in the area.

The state’s Committee on Amnesty had affirmed that only armed militants from the riverine areas of the state would benefit from the package, which was unveiled last week.

The state government, in conjunction with the Presidential Amnesty Office, last Thursday, opened a fresh window of opportunity for militants yet to surender their arms since the inauguration of the programme in 2009.

Akeredolu gave the armed youths a 21-day ultimatum to to turn in their arms.

The chairman of the Media/Public Enlightenment Sub-Committee of the State Amnesty Committee, Donald Ojogo, urged armed youths to imbibe the code of ethics of the process.

Ojogo, who is also the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, said the Amnesty package for the militants was a product of the determination of the Akeredolu to ensure peace in the state.
