    Nine first ladies for awards

    Less than one month to the expiration of their husband’s tenure, nine first ladies have been shortlisted for the Most Valuable Governors’ Wives Awards (MVGWA) in Abuja on May 19.

    Former First Lady of Nigeria and the Chief Justice of Niger State, Justice Fati Abubakar, is expected to deliver the keynote address at the award ceremony.

    The Executive Secretary of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Ado Muhammad, will be the guest speaker.

    A statement for the organisers by Tom Obulu said MVGWA is designed to lead a new phenomenon in the assessment and recognition of the governors’ wives, who are providing complementary achievements to the governors’ achievements.

    Obulu said 36 governors’ wives and the FCT Minister’s wife were assessed based on their NGO projects available in the public domain and impacts on the people.

    The criteria adopted were sustainability, empowerment, impact, change agent and corporate branding (SEICC), he added.

    The awardees include Hajiya Hauwa Yuguda, wife of Bauchi State governor; Deaconess Mrs. Roli Uduaghan, wife of Delta State governor; (Dr) Aisha Bala Mohammed, wife of the FCT Minister and Mrs. Nkechi Okorocha, wife of Imo State governor.

    Others are: Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed, wife of Kwara State governor;  Hajiya Jummai Aliyu, wife of  Niger State governor; Mrs. Olukemi Mimiko, wife of Ondo State governor and Hajiya Asma’u Yari, wife of Zamfara State governor.

    Vodacom has won the Cloud Services Provider of the Year and ICT Infrastructure Provider of the Year (Data Centre) at the BoICT Awards in Lagos.

    Its Director, Legal  Services, Nkechi  Newton-Denila, who received the awards at an event that brought together leaders in the industry to celebrate their achievements in the past year.

    She said the recognition was a call to do more, adding that the firm would keep working hard to grow businesses in the country with its cutting-edge technology.

    She said:  “We are happy to have received the Cloud Services Provider of the Year and ICT Infrastructure Provider of the Year (Data Centre) Awards. This is testament to our commitment to provide world-class and innovative services leveraging on our local expertise and global track record to support business growth in Nigeria. Our gratitude goes to our customers whose businesses are driving the Nigerian economy and the men and women at Vodacom who work round the clock to enable these businesses.”

    This is the fifth BoICT award the company has won in three years, winning Enterprise Solutions Provider of the Year in 2013 and last year and Cloud Service provider of the Year last year and 2015 consecutively. ICT Infrastructure Provider of the Year (Data Centre) is the newest addition to the company’s list of accolades. Early last year, Vodacom Business Nigeria’s Software as a Service solution (SaaS) was awarded Enterprise Solution of the Year, a prestigious award at the Cyber Africa Innovation Awards last year.

    The awards follows the company’s Enterprise Voice Solution launch event where the company introduced Business Express, a Cloud–based Hosted IPBX solution which enables businesses to save as much as 30 per cent on cost of voice calls to local and international destinations.

  • Awards for rector, poly

    Kwara State Polytechnic (KWARAPOLY), Ilorin has been adjudged the most ethically responsible polytechnic in Nigeria by the Centre for Ethics Self Value Orientation.

    The Rector, Mas’ud Elelu, also received the “Ambassador of Ethics and Conscience” award.

    Presenting the awards to the Rector and the Registrar, Mr Moses Salami, President of the centre, Prince Salihu Yakubu, said the leadership of the poly justified its selection, noting that it blocked loopholes for frittering funds.

    He added that the centre has so far evaluated 38 polys in the country and found the leadership of KWARAPOLY to be upright.

    He said: “We have assessed up to 38 polytechnics from all over Nigeria and discovered that this Polytechnic is blessed with leaders who are not self centered and corrupt.

    We salute your efforts, dogged and determination to bring back the lost glory of the Polytechnics in Nigeria.”

     

  • UNIUYO to host NUC fair, awards

    The University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has been selected by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to host the Sixth Nigerian Universities Research and Development Fair (NURESDEF) and the 2013/2014 Nigerian Universities Doctoral Theses Award Scheme (NUDTAS) – two very important events in its calendar – in March.

    A member of the seven-man team of the Organising Committee from the NUC in Abuja, witnessed the inauguration of Local Organising Committees (LOC) for the two programmes by the UNIUYO Vice Chancellor, Prof (Comfort Ekpo.

    NUC team leader, Mrs F.C. Unigbe said the NURESDEF is a bi-annual activity organised to showcase the researches and developments in Nigerian universities; while Mallam L.M said that NUDTAS started at the University of Lagos in 2001 and has been hosted by several universities, with the last edition held at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, in 2012.

    Faruk, who is the Coordinator and Vice-Chairman of the Organising Committee, promised that the NUC will support the LOCs towards the success of the two events.

    Inaugurating the two committees, Prof Ekpo, said that the university accepted to host the two events because of the expected benefits to be derived.

    The members of the NURESDEF LOC are: Prof. Paul Ekwere, former DVC (Academic) as Chairman; Mrs. Imaobong Udom, Directorate of Personnel Affairs (Secretary); Prof. Ini Uko, Director, Pre-degree/Basic Studies; Prof. Mbuk Mboho, Director, Information and Public Order; Prof. Joe Essien (Micobiology); Dr. Imoh Emenyi (English); Dr. Ime Ebenso, (Ag. Head, Animal Science); Dr. Anietie Efi, Director, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies; Dr. Edu Inam (Chemistry); Dr. Imaobong Akpan (Educational Foundations); Peter Umana (Director, Physical Planning), among others.

    The NUDTAS LOC include: Prof. Joseph Obinaju, Dean, Postgraduate School (Chairman); Prof. A.P.Udoh (Chemistry); Prof Imelda Udoh (Linguistics and Nigerian Languages), and Dr. Akindele Alonge (Agric and Food Engineering); and Mr Uduak Abia, Secretary.

     

  • Social Media Awards holds in Lagos Friday

    Social Media players across Africa will converge on Lagos between Friday and on Saturday for the annual Social Media Awards Africa initiative sponsored by Sterling Bank Plc.

    This between according to a statement, follows the closure of the voting window for the continent-wide initiative on social media development, #SMAA2015 across Africa last December. With a Summit scheduled for Friday, the Award presentation follows the next day.

    The event will bring together social media influencers; experts, enthusiasts and policy makers that would explore and forge new developmental paths for Africa. SMAA is a premier continental initiative, which seeks to recognise and reward creativity, excellence and impact in the usage of social media across Africa.

    The voting phase, which is part of the process led to the emergence of 45 Finalists for the four Categories. A total of 923 nominations were received. They are: Personality Based (468), Platform Specific (266), Institutional (115) and INDIGENOUS (74). Also, during the window period, over 5.5 Million Connections, at least 821,886 Retweets and 29 Million accounts were reached through all 22 social media platforms where the messages were promoted.

    Each winner will take home a cash prize of US$1,000 and a SMAA Plaque. Other benefits include: Social Media training, access to memberships and attendance of Social Media events, publications on Social Media and complimentary advertising on Social Media Africa portal.

  • Nominations open for Ghana Music Awards

    CHARTERHOUSE, organisers of the prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Festival, has announced it is inviting musical works for this year’s competition. This year’s event will be the 16th edition and the organisers are inviting works from musicians and record labels for works that were released between January 1 and December 31, 2014, for nominations. The event will be held in the month of April.

    “Artistes and artistes managers are advised to download the nomination forms from the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards website  www.ghanamusicawards.com or pick up the forms from Charterhouse office at North Industrial Area,” a statement from the outfit said.

    “All completed entries should be submitted to the offices of Charterhouse,” the organisers added.

    The statement also revealed that this year, the general public has been given the opportunity to also nominate their favourite artistes and songs by downloading nomination forms from the event website and submitting thereafter.

    This, according to the organisers “will give artistes the opportunity for their musical works to be considered for nomination for the 16th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Deadline for submission of entries is February 1, 2015.”

  • Dons win awards

    A Professor of Geology and Mineral Sciences at UNILORIN, Samuel Akande, has won the 2015 Grover E. Murray Memorial Distinguished Educator Award.

    Also a Professor of Ophthalmology, Joshua F. A. Owoeye, has won the International Ophthalmologist Education Award.

    Akande’s recent award follows the 2014 Outstanding Earth Science Lecturer Award (NOELA) he won last year.

    While the NOELA was conferred on Akande by the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) at its 32nd Annual Conference in Lagos last November 13, the Grover E. Murray Memorial Distinguished Educator Award will be presented to him during the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) annual conference holding in Denver, Colorado, USA on May 31, 2015.

    A letter to Akande by the Chairman of NAPE Distinguished Award Committee and Vice President of the Association, Dr. James Edet, disclosed that NOELA was in recognition of his “immense contributions to the practice and teaching of Earth Science and unflinching support for the various activities and programmes of the Association.”

    Meanwhile, Owoeye’s award was presented at the 2014 conference of the American Academy of Ophthalmologist (AAO) in China, Illinois, USA between October 18 and 21, 2014, in pursuit of a lifelong education in Ophthalmology.

    He was the only Nigerian out of the 50 recipients for 2014worldwide.

    Super Falcons head coach Edwin Okon has said recent Caf awards won by the side and star striker Asisat Oshoala will be key at the upcoming Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

    The Falcons won the women’s national team of the year while Rivers Angels markswoman Oshoala won the prestigious overall best and youth player of the year awards at the 2014 Glo/Caf awards in Lagos.

    Okon said the African performance award is a huge challenge for the side to further prove their worth at the world stage when football hostilities start in Canada in June.

    “The Caf awards to Asisat Oshoala and Super Falcons are good omens for better things to come, especially at the upcoming Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

    “Winning the best national team in Africa is no mean feat and same goes for Oshoala’s emergence as the best player as well as youth player for 2014.

    “The awards are wake-up calls for us to work harder as Nigeria will be the target at the World Cup among their opponents.

    “We would like to excel at the world stage to prove to doubters that the recognition of our performance in Africa are well deserved and not a fluke, ” said the Rivers Angels head coach to supersport.com.

    The reigning African champions will campaign for honours in Group D at the World Cup together with Australia, Sweden and former world champions USA.

    GLO-CAF Awards: Okocha, Kanu lead ex-internationals to Gala Night

    Ex-internationals and former Super Eagles Captains, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo will be among the generation of old Super Eagles’ players who will attend the 2014 Glo-CAF Awards gala night coming up on 8th January in Lagos, Nigeria.

    In a statement from the organisers of the awards, Globacom, Okocha and two former African Footballers of the Year, Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Nosa Ikpeba, are expected to grace the awards aptly labelled the ‘Oscars’ of African football.

    It is believed that their presence at the event would spur younger football players to greater heights.

    Okocha distinguished himself playing with Einthract Frankfurt FC of Germany, Fernabache of Turkey, Paris St Germain of France and Bolton Wanderers of England.  He is noted for his flamboyant skills and dribbles on the pitch. A two-time winner of the BBC African Player of the Year, he was honoured with the Legends Award along with Ex-Moroccan International Mustapha Hadji at the 2011 Glo-CAF Awards.  He wore many caps for the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles before he retired about eight years ago.

    Similarly, Ikpeba, a former player of Monaco FC, popularly known as ‘Prince of Monaco’ played for the France-based team for many years before moving to Borussia Dortmund FC in Germany. He was also in Blgium where he played for Standard Liege.  He won the African Footballer of the Year Award in 1997.

    Ex-international, Kanu Nwankwo began his football exploits as a  striker in Ajax of Amsterdam and later moved to Inter Milan, Arsenal and Portsmouth amonst others. Nwankwo is rated as Nigeria’s most successful player and he earned global acclaim for his infinite capacity to score memorable goals. He won the African Footballer of the Year Award twice in 1996 and 1999.

    He captained the Nigerian senior national team, Super Eagles for many years before retiring from active football. He was the captain of the Atlanta Olympics-winning U-23 team in 1996.  He established the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation which has assisted a number of young children across Africa with heart challenges.

    The three ex-Nigerian internationals will lead other Super Eagles players to the event where they will have the opportunity to reminisce on their Super Eagles days, as well as meet current and ex-internationals from different parts of Africa.

    The 2014 Glo-CAF Awards will hold at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos on 8th January, 2015. CAF released the final list of three shortlisted players last week for the African Player of the Year awards.

    They are Nigerian Vincent Enyeama who currently plays for Lille in France, three-time African Player of the Year and Manchester City Midfielder, Yaya Toure, and Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang currently playing for Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

    Nigerians Sports Awards: Okagbare, Enyeama win double

    •Fashola, Oshoala, Quadri, Dedevbo shine

    Africa’s fastest woman and Commonwealth gold medalist Blessing Okagbare and Super Eagles Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama won two awards at the 2014 edition of the Nigerian Sports Awards.

    Okagbare carted home the Track and Field Star of the Year and Sportswoman of the Year categories while Enyeama won the Footballer of the Year and Sportsman of the Year awards.

    The event, which was held at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, was well attended by dignitaries from the Nigerian sports circle made up of ex- internationals, sports administrators, the media as well as personalities drawn from the corporate world.

    Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State emerged the Sport Governor of the year ahead of Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross Rivers State and Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State.

    Mr. Wahid Enitan Oshodi, the Lagos Sate Commissioner for Youth Sports and Social Development who is also the President of the Nigerian Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), emerged the winner of the Sports Administrator of the Year.

    Other winners at the 2014 award include Super Falcon striker and Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the just concluded African women Championship (AWC) Asisat Oshoala who won the Footballer of the Year (Women) category, the Ball sports personality of the year was won by Portugal based Aruna Quadri who also won the category in 2013 while Falconets star, Courtney Dike emerged as the Discovery of the Year 2014.

    Three prominent Nigerian Sports Legends were honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. They are Pa KAB Olowu, who won two silver medals at the 1954 Commonwealth Games, Dr. George Ogan who won a Silver medal at the 1966 Commonwealth games and Dr. Awoture Elaye who was the coach of the Nigerian team to the 1990 Commonwealth games. This category of the award was presented by another veteran, Modupe Oshikoya who was honoured with the same award at the maiden edition.

    In the School Sports category, St. Barnabas Primary School, Ilorin emerged winner for winning the West African Football Union (WAFU) under-13 Football competition thereby displacing Greensprings School, Lagos who won the category back to back in the last two editions.

    The Falconets emerged the Team of the Year while their Coach, Peter Dedevbo who is also a nominee of the FIFA Women Football Coach of the Year emerged the Coach of the Year.

    In the Combat sports personality of the year category, Odunayo Adekuroye emerged winner; Efe Ajagba won the Boxer of the Year; Loveline Obiji won the Special Sports Person of the Year and Maryam Usman won the Weightlifter of the Year.

    In the Sports Journalist category, Tana Aiyeina of Punch Newspaper emerged the Journalist of the Year (Print), Ayodele Ojo of the Sun Newspaper emerged the Sports Photo Journalist of the Year, Godwin Enakheana of Top Radio won the Sports Journalist of the Year (Radio) while Miyen Akiri of Galaxy Television won the Sports Journalist of the year (Television).

    The Chairman of the award panel, Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo described the third edition of the award as a significant milestone not only for the organisers of the award but for the country as a whole in commemoration of the centenary celebration of the nation.
