    The Nation confirms class with harvest of 13 awards at NMMA

    With 13 prizes at the Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA) in Lagos last night, The Nation has confirmed its rating as Nigeria’s leading newspaper.

    The awards were won out of the 26 nominations this newspaper received.

    New Telegraph won in four categories.  The Punch won two prizes from its 14 nominations.

    The Nation‘s star writer and Associate Editor Olatunji Ololade won three awards— Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola Prize for Sports Reporter of the Year, Gani Fawehinmi Prize for Human Rights Reporter of the Year and Sonny Odogwu Prize for Business Reporter of the Year.

    The Head of Investigation Desk and multiple-award winner Adekunle Yusuf also won two awards—Adamu Mu’azu Prize for Tourism Reporter of the Year and Chevron Nigeria Prize for Oil and Gas Reporter of the Year.

    An Assistant Editor, Seun Akioye, won the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Prize for Culture and Tradition Reporter of the Year. He was a runner-up in the Olusegun Mimiko Prize for Foreign News Reporter category.

    A Correspondent on the Features Desk, The Nation on Sunday, Gboyega Alaka, won the Olu Aboderin Prize for Entertainment Reporter of the Year.

    Senior Finance Correspondent Collins Nweze  won  the Union Bank Prize for Banking and Finance Reporter of the Year and the UBA Prize for Money Market Reporting.

    An Assistant Editor on the Business Desk Lucas Ajanaku won the MTN Prize for Telecommunication Reporting.

    Senior Correspondent Adeyinka Aderibigbe won the Abubakar Imam Prize for Newspaper Feature Writer of the Year. Abiodun Williams won the Photographer of the Year.

    Reporter Hannah Ojo clinched the Etisalat Prize for Most Innovative Reporting.

    Others who made good showing in The Nation stable are Sina Fadare, Chikodi Okereocha, Joseph Jibueze, Azeez Ozi-Sanni and  Olatunde Odebiyi, who were runners –up in various categories.

    New Telegraph’s Isioma Madike won two prizes—Energy Correspondent of the Year and Insurance Reporter of the Year.  His colleagues, Oluwatosin Omoniyi (Agric Reporter of the Year) and Juliana Francis (Defence Reporter of the Year).

    The Punch reporters Arukaino Umukoro won Real Estate/Construction Reporter of the Year and Dayo Oketola won the Power Reporter of the Year.

    Abuja-based Daily Trust won the Babatunde Jose Prize for Newspaper of the Year and its Editor Nasiru Lawal was declared Editor of the Year.

    Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode congratulated the winners, saying it was reward for hard work. He advised journalists to uphold the culture of investigation, adding that they should beam their searchlight on the socio-economic development of the nation. He was represented by Special Adviser on Community Communication Kehinde Bamigbetan.

    Chairman of the NMMA Board of Trutees, Mr Vincent Maduka said: “We believe that the objectives that we seek to promote at NMMA should strengthen the Nigerian media in carrying out their responsibilities with diligence, ethics and professionalism.”

    The All-new Hyundai Elantra was awarded the Best New Small Car title and the Hyundai Elantra Sport won the Best New Sports/Performance Car title by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

    First introduced in 1991, the Elantra compact sedan – now in its sixth generation – has sold over 500,000 units in Canada and more than 10 million units worldwide. Meanwhile, the Sport version is new to the Hyundai line-up and stands as the most powerful Elantra model ever produced.

    The previous generation Elantra won both the Canadian Car of the Year and North American Car of the Year titles in 2012, and this new recognition continues Hyundai’s recent winning ways in the Canadian competition. Since 2011, the Tucson, Accent, Veloster, Elantra GT, Santa Fe Sport, and Sonata have also received honours from AJAC. As category winners, Elantra and Elantra Sport are now on the final list of contenders for the 2017 Canadian Car of the Year title announced February 16, 2017.

    Chi wins two awards

    Two brands on the stable of Chi Limited have received awards at the Global Quality Excellence Awards, which held in Lagos.

    The brands are Chivita 100 per cent, the company’s flagship brand, which was named winner of the ‘Best Quality Fruit Juice Excellence Award’ for the Juice category and Hollandia Yoghurt which won the ‘Best Quality Yoghurt Excellence Award’ in the drinking yoghurt category.

    The organisers said the awards would ensure that quality remains an important tool for national growth and prosperity.

    A member of the Organising Committee for the Awards, Desmond Esorougwe, said: “In a global economy where success depends on quality, innovativeness and sustainabi-lity, the award is the chance to reinforce these virtues as the foundation of organisations and brand’s requirement for achieving improved business performance.

    “After a painstaking review of brands in the fruit juice and yoghurt categories, Chivita 100 per cent fruit juice and Hollandia Yoghurt came tops in recognition of their capacity to deliver authentic consumer experiences.”

    All set for Best of Nollywood Awards

    Stakeholders in the Nigerian motion picture industry will, this weekend, converge on Umuahia, Abia State, as this year’s edition of Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards takes the city by storm.

    A pan-Nigerian award scheme, organisers have through the years, promoted the initiative as a Nigeria’s preeminent indigenous platform for rewarding and celebrating the movie industry’s best and most creative.

    Last year’s edition of the show took place in Akure, the Ondo State Capital, with other past outings in Delta, Rivers and Lagos among other States.

    Organisers have revealed that this year’s event will be anchored by actor/comedian, Okey Bakassi and leading actress, Mercy Aigbe.

    With a touch of difference, organisers have asked that nominees and guests should turn out in their Made-in-Nigeria finery, which is in consonance with the Made-in-Aba promotional drive of the host governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

    It is the eighth edition of the indigenous awards ceremony which, since inception, has been putting a golden seal of excellence on the works of those toiling and sweating to produce and star in feel-good and educative movies.

    This year’s edition is especially symbolic because veteran thespians like Chief Chika Opala a.k.a Chief Zebrudaya of the New Masquerade fame and prolific actress, Sola Shobowale as well as filmmaker, Fidelis Duker will be honoured in the special recognition category for their time-proven contributions to the growth of Nollywood.

    Like the chief host, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, who has promised the stars and stakeholders of Nollywood a ball and a blast, the CEO, BON Awards, Seun Oloketuyi, has also assured all guests of a quality time in Abia while promising a well-put together event that would linger in their memories for a long while.

    The Nation wins five DAME awards

    With five awards at the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), The Nation last night confirmed its high rating in the industry.

    Head of Investigation Desk and multiple-award winner Adekunle Yusuf, an Assistant Editor, beat Mary Fadile of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) to win the Nigerian Press Council Prize for Editorial Integrity.

    Another Assistant Editor, Chikodi Okereocha, picked two awards. He won the News Agency of Nigeria Prize for Agriculture Reporting with his entry titled: “How smugglers hamper rice policy, frustrate investors”. Reporter Hannah Ojo was a finalist in this category.

    Okereocha’s second entry titled: “Devaluation: Harsh climate for manufacturers, workers” won the Aliko Dangote Prize for Business Reporting. Okereocha beat The Nation’s Okwy Iroegbu-Chikezie and The Punch’s Nike Popoola. Iroegbu-Chikezie’s entry was Private sector grumbles as CBN defends its policies.

    Senior Correspondent Joseph Jibueze also clinched two awards. He won the Mobil Producing Prize for Energy Reporting and Justice Omotayo Onalaja Prize for Judicial Reporting.

    Jibueze won the Judicial Reporting Prize for the third consecutive time, becoming the first reporter with such feat in DAME’s history.

    There were 20 awards offer last night

    The Punch’s Education reporter Folashade Adebayo won the NSRP Prize for Conflict-sensitive Reporting with her entry titled: Insurgency: Killings,maiming rob Northeast of Schools Teachers. Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media and Punch Columnist Tolu Ogunlesi won DAME Prize for Informed Commentary.

    Also, The Punch Cartoonist Bennett Omeke won Vanguard Media Prize for Editorial Cartooning. The Nation’s ace Cartoonist, Azeez Ozi-Sanni, was a finalist in this category with his entry: Change, change.

    Eric Dumo of The Punch won Simeon Olatoye Idowu Prize for Sport Reporting with his entry: Hooliganism: The dark side of Nigeria.

    Motunrayo Joel also of The Punch won Sam Amuka Prize for Investigative Reporting with her entry: Ovum trading: Inside Nigeria’s multimillion Naira human egg business.

    The Punch with a total seven awards, was rated the Newspaper of the year and its Editor Martin Ayankola won Editor of the year award.

    Chairman of Diamond Publication Mr. Lanre Idowu, said the award was established 25 years ago to celebrate professionalism in the media practice. DAME, he said, had helped journalists to strive for excellent reporting and media investigation.

    He said 495 awards had been given in the last 25 years, noting that 20 awards were given out each year to celebrate journalists with excellent stories.

    Idowu said there were 402 valid entries this year, out of which 100 entries were disqualified for non-clarity and poor editorial assessment.

    He added that DAME prizes were for affirmation of what is good about the Nigerian media. He hailed the members of judges’ panel for their commitment to responsible media practice.

    Chairman of DAME Board of Trutees (BOT), Amb. Moses Ihonde, noted that politics reporters had not lived up to expectations in reporting the “unjustifiable pensions” political office holders are creating for themselves.

    He said: “It is wrong for political office holders to create pension that can’t be justified for themselves. I would urge our political reporters charged to conduct investigation into activities of politicians creating unjustifiable pensions for themselves.”

    Turkish Airlines gets awards

    Europe’s Best Airline Turkish Airlines has won gold in one of the most-coveted global advertising awards – Epica Awards.

    The airline’s blockbuster award-winning “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” advertising campaign made a cameo with its Boeing 777 aircraft.

    The idea was to claim that Turkish Airlines was flying to the movie’s imaginary cities of Gotham City and Metropolis. Outside the on-screen reality, Turkish Airlines was committed to the unveiling of innovative movie-themed experiences that gave fans around the world the possibility to look into the world of the iconic superheroes, including the possibility for travellers to “book” flights to the airline’s two “new” additions to its route network.

    Turkish Airlines was awarded under the Product & Brand Integration category, which awards “operations promoting branded products or services via appearances in pre-existing films, television shows or other media, enabling brands to gain or reinforce status from the context in which they are placed.”

    ”We are proud of this prize that shows Turkish Airlines’ commitment in offering always new delightful and unexpected experiences to its passengers and followers worldwide,” Turkish Airlines’ Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Ahmet Olmutur, said.

    Chi Limited has received awards for two of the brands on its stable at this year’s Global Quality Excellence Awards in Lagos.

    The recognition showed several years of consistent high quality, constant innovation and a commitment to ensuring that consumers get quality, healthy refreshing fruit juices and dairy products.

  • AFRIFF WOWS GUESTS AT AWARDS GALA

    AFTER a week of screening over 150 movies and documentaries, including workshops and industry sessions, the sixth African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) came to an end with a star-studded Globe Award which held at the Eko Convention Center, Eko Hotel and Suits, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Hosted by the talented Nollywood actress, Kemi Lala Akindoju and TV presenter, Uti Nwachukwu, the event, which was attended by top dignitaries from the business and political terrains also had filmmakers from Africa and beyond, whose films screened at the week-long event.

    Tagged The Broadway Show, the closing ceremony thrilled guests to breath-taking shows, including duets and a mind-blowing tribute to the late Afro-beat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, led by actor Gideon Okeke.

    It was also a moment of celebrations for winners, as the festival’s Closing Night Movie, ’76, a movie about events that heralded and succeeded the Military coup d’état which led to the demise of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, and directed by Izu Ojukwu, won four awards including – Best Screenplay, Best Feature Film, Best Actor, Best Director.

    Renowned Nollywood actress, Bimbo Akintola, won Best Lead Actress for her role in the movie, 93 Days. ‘Green White Green’ by Abba Makama won the Oronto Douglas Award for Best Nigerian film, while Ghanaian filmmaker and animator, Agorkoli Francis Brown, won Best Animation with a price tag of N200,000.

    Other recipients include the beneficiaries of AFRIFF/Ford Foundation scholarship to the University of Montana, United States, for further training in different aspects of filmmaking.

    Speaking at the glamorous event, Founder and Executive Director of AFRIFF, Ms. Chioma Ude, noted that the crucial component of the festival is the training it provides to the young minds of Africa. “We’ve trained over 1,300 of those minds in our free workshops, as we continue to emphasize that AFRIFF should, and must educate as much as it entertains. AFRIFF has cultivated a space in which entertainment and education can cohesively co-exist and I’m proud to say that we have watched several members of the AFRIFF family go on to develop in the industry with the skills they have acquired from their training,” she said.

    According to Ude, AFRIFF, in its 6th year continues to be at the forefront in showcasing African cinema. “Over the past six years, we covered three cities and we have had over 20,000 visitors of which 30% have been foreign. Each year, our global invitation to the world fixates on exhibiting the large diversity of ethnicities, cultures and languages on our continent and combatting the absence of authentic African subjects in film.”

    She thanked the Ministry of Information and Culture as well as sponsors such as Access Bank and Air France for what she described as their incessant support.

    “With AFRIFF, we will continue to infiltrate the minds of both the young and the old, illustrating the significance of the film industry as a profession in Africa, and we will remind our global audience that WE ARE HERE and as long as we live we have a story to tell,” she concluded.

    For the Festival Coordinator Mrs. Afie Braimoh, who gave a summary of the entire festival activities at the closing event, AFRIFF decided to engage Secondary School pupils in Lagos to an IMAX education in line with the festival’s goal to build capacity. “We had over 250 kids who have not stopped expressing their gratitude to the wonderful unique experience. In Line with educating our young, 150 students were also trained by the best in the industry at the Afrinolly Studios. Tonight, some of those lucky students will be selected to attend a month of film making in the U.S.”

    Shell wins SERAs’ CSR innovations awards

    Shell Companies in Nigeria (SCiN) has won two trophies at the 10th Sustainability, Enterprise and Responsibility Awards (SERAs) in Lagos.

    Known as the Corporate Social Responsibility Awards, SERAs instituted the awards to celebrate companies that have impacted positively in their environments.

    At this edition, Shell Nigeria’s kinetic pitch won in the Innovation Award category, beating seven other nominees. It also won the Best Company in the  Climate Action category, beating five other competitors.

    Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company’s (SNEPCo’s) General Manager, Deepwater Production, Effy Okon, led its team which comprised General Manager, External Relations, Igo Weli; External Relations Communications Manager Sola Abulu; Head, Business Relations, Alan Udi; and Social Performance Discipline Adviser Hope Nuka, to receive the awards.

    Twenty-six awards were won by corporate organisations and individuals in recognition of their sustainable development and social investment efforts in Africa, including the President of Botswana, Ian Khama.

    Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria and Managing Director of The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC), Osagie Okunbor, said: “We are pleased at the recognition of our contributions to the development of Nigeria. Corporate Social Responsibility is an idea, which Shell has given priority, and the company is working to improve its partnership with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), governments and communities to deliver on its promise of developing human and material resources.”

  • Group’s CSR awards hold today

    The SERAS CSR Awards Africa holds today at Shell Hall, MUSON Centre,  Onikan, Lagos.

    Expected at the event are President, The Republic of Botswana,Lt.-Gen.Khama Seretse Ian, the Chief Executive Officer, TruContact, organiser of the awards, Mr. Ken Egbas, has said.

    He said other dignitaries expected at the 10th edition of the awards are Kano State Governor Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

    Ganduje is billed to showcase his government’s interventions in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as zero hunger and quality education.

    Former governor of Cross River State and presidential aspirant, Mr. Donald Duke, will deliver the keynote address entitled: “Innovation and the future of sustainability in Africa.”

    Others include Dr. Christopher Kolade (CON), pro-chancellor and chairman, Governing Council, Pan-Atlantic University, Lekki, and Senator John Owan Enoh, chairman, Finance Committee, Senate.

    Ian will receive the ‘Sustainability Champion’ Award for the role he played in ensuring that Botswana posted one of the most outstanding results among African countries in the millennium development goals targets that ended on December 31, last year.

    Egbas said there are 27 awards to be decided by the panelists. “The award categories would be in line with the United Nations sustainable development goals,” he said.

    SERAS promotes corporate social responsibility and sustainability on the continent.
