AWDROP’s new leadership pledges transparency, development in water well drilling sector

The newly elected President of the Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), Prof. Ajeni Okunlola, has pledged to prioritize transparency and accountability in the association’s activities while driving development in Nigeria’s water well drilling sector.

Prof. Okunlola outlined his vision during the association’s leadership handover ceremony in Abuja on Friday, where he emphasized the importance of capacity building for AWDROP members and the need for collaboration with the government and key stakeholders to advance the sector.

Outgoing President Michael Ale, who led the association, while highlighting past efforts to advocate for the interests of water well drilling practitioners across Nigeria, urged the new leadership to continue engaging with governmental bodies to address the nation’s water resource issues.

In his inaugural speech, Prof. Okunlola expressed his commitment to strengthening AWDROP’s institutional framework, fostering sustainable practices, and advocating for the water well drilling community.

He called on members to unite behind his leadership and work collectively to realize the association’s goals.

He also noted that the ceremony which was attended by AWDROP members from across the country, underscored a shared commitment to advancing the association’s impact on Nigeria’s water sector.

AWDROP procures equipment to militate haphazard drilling

Association of Professional Rig Owners and Borehole Drilling Practitioners ( AWDROP ) has procured a new Intelligent Automatic Mapping Geo-physiological prospecting water detector, an equipment to militate against haphazard drilling of boreholes in the country.

The President of the Association, Engineer Michael Ale who stated this in Ibadan during a press briefing with journalists said the procured equipment will help in determining the actual depth in water drilling and help guard against indiscriminate activities of illegal practitioners.

Ale noted that the equipment is an innovative technology that will help the government on precision in allocation of borehole projects to contractors and therefore prevent the borehole failure rate in the country as it will help the Geophysicists to provide accurate survey report.

He said: “What exactly we are bringing to Nigerian community is a new Intelligent Automatic Mapping Geo-physiological prospecting water detector, an innovative equipment in water drilling business. Considering the fact that we have so many entrance and lack of standard in the drilling industry which has led to indiscriminate activities and haphazard drilling, quite a number of people are confused about the depth of a drilling. Government give contracts without knowing the depth contractors must drill and as a result, our geophysicists give inaccurate reports which are less professional.

“In order to solve all these problems, we came up with this technology because we learnt digital technology replaces so many of our problems. The equipment is going to help the government on precision when it comes to allocating borehole projects to contractors. The equipment will prevent borehole failure rate in the country and help greatly in geophysical survey. As an association, we want to use this to empower our members as well make sure the government enjoy our services. That is why we bought several numbers of this equipment and distributed it to our known geophysicists and practitioners in this field. We are imploring the government that this equipment is here to solve a lot of problems especially ambiguity in terms of project allocation to contractors.

“There are trained geoscientists who will handle the equipment coupled with interpretation of graphical illustrations to enhance efficiency because this equipment is highly technical. And I want to note that there is going to be technology transfer for better enhancement.

  • AWDROP to rehabilitate abandoned boreholes

The Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP) has launched the National Borehole Rejuvenation and Revitalisation  (Na-BORE) program to generate revenue for state governments.

It said the proceeds will be used to rehabilitate all abandoned government water projects and create employment for youths.

National President Michael Ale, who spoke in Abuja, at the maiden edition of the National Borehole Master Drillers Conference held at Transcorp Hilton hotel, noted that Na-BORE would uphold standards in drilling practices to prevent quackery and other menace associated with drilling.

“In order to stem the spate of failure in the sector, AWDROP is coming with a new program for professionals and practitioners in the industry tagged National Borehole Rejuvenation and Revitalization Program (Na-BORE), which mission is on four fulcrums: the World Water Theme of 2016 (WATER AND JOB); the council resolution of the Ministry of Water Resources; goal 6 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the National Food Sufficiency Program of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Ale said the program will be launched in all states, adding that the pilot study will be carried out in Osun, Benue, Plateau, Kwara, Ondo and Oyo states, including the Federal Capital Territory.

  • Group seeks more jobs

The National President, Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), Michael Ale, has advised the Federal Government to create opportunities for entrepreneurs.

The association also urged the government to assist its members to create more jobs.

Ale spoke the World Water Day and Energy endurance walk tagged; “Clean water; challenges and prospect” in Osogbo, Osun State.

The AWDROP president faulted the government for giving drilling jobs to foreigners, saying it was another way of complicating unemployment among Nigerians.

“It is not good enough for government to neglect professionals and embrace non- professionals, who are either political associates or foreigners.

“I also want to urge the Federal Government to implement Presidential Water initiative communique of 2013.”

  • Commission, borehole drillers seek safer environment

Members of the Association of Water Well Drilling Rig owners and Practitioners (AWDROP) have pledged to cooperate with the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LSWRC) to curb indiscriminate drilling of boreholes.

The association President, Michael Ale, who led members of his executives to the Commission in Lagos, reiterated the need to standardise the sector, because Nigerians deserve the best in terms of water consumption.

He stated that 97 per cent of fresh water is found under the ground and can only be accessed through drilling. He then called for effective patronage of services of borehole drilling professional contractors. This, according to him, would help the country meet the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LSWRC, Mrs. Tanwa Koya, while soliciting co-operation of the association, said it is part of the commission’s mandate to regulate borehole drilling activities in the state, taking into cognizance people’s health and environmental safety.

Koya, whose agency is saddled with ensuring proper delivery of water supply and sewerage (waste water management services) in Lagos State, said effective collaboration between both parties would ensure that the sector is fully sanitised, adding that more of such collaborations would be pursued for the commission to achieve its mandate.

  • Cholera outbreak: Water borehole drillers challenges N/Assembly on

AS the dry season and harmattan gradually roll in, the National Assembly has been called upon by the Nigerian Association of Waterwell Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP) approve the Code of Practice Bill for Water Well Drilling to guarantee safe potable water supply for the citizenry. This, according to the association will also checkmate the upsurge of cholera outbreaks across the nation.

At a news conference in Ibadan on Monday, National President, Michael Ale, emphasised the need for the Government at all levels in Nigeria to put high premium on standardisation in the drilling of potable water boreholes all over the Federation to meet the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

According to him, absence of the Code of Practice in the country presently has created a loophole for unwholesome practices and racketeering in the water borehole drilling activities whereby some foreign drillers had already filtered Nigeria with obsolete drilling equipment, thus making the country a dump yard.

While insisting that failure to uphold all necessary sanitary activities in the water borehole drilling may result in cholera outbreak, Ale said: “non professional boreholes drilling contractors are on suicidal mission if they are not operating to Health Safety and Environmental standard and Best suggested sanitary and hygienic Practice.”
