  • ‘No rift between Obi, Ugokwe’

A group, the Anambra League of Young Professionals, has debunked speculations that there is a rift between former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and ex-Nigerian Ambassador to Austria, Dr. Jerry Ugokwe, over ministerial appointment.

It, however, urged Obi to solicit the assistance of President Goodluck Jonathan in making Ugokwe the next minister from the state.

Since the exit of former Aviation Minister Princess Stella Oduah, many have been jostling to replace her.

In a statement yesterday in Awka, the group said the cap fits Ugokwe, a former lawmaker, who represented Idemili North and South.

It said: “Mr. President, it will amount to a disservice if a novice, a political neophyte and a charlatan becomes a ministerial appointee. Ugokwe has paid his dues in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and in Anambra politics.

“Obi is a man of integrity, who stands for equity and fairness. Little wonder he promised making a man from Anambra North the governor and he fulfilled his promise. We are hopeful he will not shortchange Anambra Central by allowing usurpers to take over the affairs of this state.

“Anambra League of Young Professionals solicits Obi’s support by prevailing on President Jonathan to pick Ugokwe as a minister from this state.”

  • More journalists accredited

    More journalists accredited

As part of the preparations for the Governorship Election tomorrow in Anambra State, the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) this morning began the accreditation of newsmen for the exercise.

The accreditation which began at about 11 am is taking place inside the INEC Office along House of Assembly Road, Awka, the state capital.

The accreditation process involves a presentation of a covering letter by media organizations confirming that the reporter was duly sent and authorized by the organisation to cover the election for it; and as a way to verify the authenticity of such a letter, INEC requires each reporter to present two photocopies of their official identity card, and the name must be corroborated by either a drivers license, national identity card or an international passport.

Thereafter, the reporter is made to fill a letter/ form reflecting INEC’s authority to cover the exercise. The letter bears  Ref. No: INEC/AN/ PE/ 200/1/89 and dated November 14.

The accreditation process was still on as at the time of this report.

  • New face of teaching hospital Awka

SIR: Founded many years ago, Amaku General Hospital, (now Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka), gained prominence due to the expertise of most of the doctors and nurses. Their selfless services contributed immensely to the successes achieved in the hospital. But that was in the past. At a point things began to turn upside town, perhaps, due to unfavourable government’s policies, or rather, politicization of human lives. The basic demands of the hospital were not met; dilapidated and decayed hospital equipment was never replaced; the quality and quantity of the drugs brought to the hospital became somehow questionable.

Some nurses and doctors, as their own reaction to government’s apparently callous actions, began showing lackadaisical attitude towards the affairs of the patients. Even when a medical doctor was the governor of Anambra State, the doctors went on strike after so many years of tears to draw the government’s attention which fell on deaf ears. Of course, death rate increased and some patients who cannot afford private hospital services were left to their fate. Those who knew the hospital before now can attest to this.

The hospital from 2007 or so downwards could not boast of at least one healthy structure or facility. Patients and indeed good Anambrarians let ‘wild’ their voices in plea to the government to no avail.

To be honest, the current government of Mr. Peter Obi deserves commendation, at least, counting on what he has achieved at the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka. Igbo adage avers that when you commend someone for a job well done, he would be fortified with enough courage to do more! When I visited the hospital recently, I could not help but shrug in awe over what I saw. Yes! If one calls it one of the wonders of Anambra, it would certainly not be in error. Multibillion naira, gigantic buildings are on ground. There are over 15 of them that are completed and others springing up. The quality of drugs sent to the hospital is sound as captured in the words of some patients I interacted with.

It is not that there are no few things which need to be attended to; but whoever sees the truth should ‘vomit’ it. As at the time I visited the area, there were series of work going on. The massive compound was being beautified and trees were being planted to check erosions and as windbreaks to preserve the new structures. More importantly, the teaching hospital secured accreditation through the relentless efforts of the same man who made it a teaching hospital, or rather, paved way for that. The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Ezeobi Ifeanyi has equally been praised. They said the man works hard as if it is his personal hospital. However, the patients and indeed, concerned Anambrarians are in tears, not of pain or anguish, but of joy. Honesty demands that he who did well should be commended.

According to the Communiqué, “the union vehemently condemns any attempt by a citizen of Anambra North to lobby for or, accept, even on a platter of gold, candidacy as a deputy governor.

Ngige assures on improved power supply

The Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Power and Steel, Senator Chris Ngige, has assured that there would be improvement in power supply across the country soon.

The senator, representing Anambra Central District, gave the assurance while fielding questions from journalists in Awka on Tuesday.

According to him, the Independent Power Plant (IPP) programme being carried out by government is aimed at alleviating the suffering of Nigerians over the epileptic power supply in the country.

The senator assured that the IPP programmes would save small and medium scale industries from closing shops.

Ngige assured that Awka residents would soon begin to enjoy improved power supply with the new transmission line at Agu-Awka power station coming on stream.

He said the Agu-Awka power station, a new transmission line in Anambra, was already being test-run for the past three weeks, and would be officially commissioned soon.

“This is part of the Independent Power Plant (IPP) programme of the Federal Government on the power sector.

“What we have in Agu-Awka power station is a new transmission line under a test run and that explains why in the past three weeks major parts of the state capital have been enjoying uninterrupted power supply,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Ngige as saying to journalists on Tuesday.

He said that it had helped to reduce transformers’ overloading in the state capital and improved power supply to the neighbouring communities of Nibo, Mbaukwu, Umuawulu and Amawbia towns of Awka South Local Government Area.
