A US-based entrepreneur and philanthropist, Chief Afolami Awosika, has officially handed over three modern games courts built within the Ondo Township Stadium to the Ondo state government.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held in Ondo on Tuesday, Chief Awosika explained that the basketball, volleyball and lawn tennis courts were conceived as a deliberate intervention to engage young people positively and to support the Osemawe of Ondo’s drive to promote grassroots sports development.

According to him, “the facilities are designed to harness youthful energy productively, nurture talents and align with the Osemawe’s vision of using sports as a tool to curb cultism, youth restiveness and other social vices, while also creating opportunities to discover athletes with global potential”

Chief Awosika, who is currently holds the chieftaincy title of Lomafe of Ondo Kingdom, reaffirmed his belief that meaningful youth development begins with the deliberate provision of safe and functional spaces where young people can channel their energy positively.

He explained that sports not only promote physical fitness but also instill values such as teamwork, discipline and perseverance, which are essential for building responsible future leaders.

He further stated that the establishment of the courts and the accompanying tournament was his modest way of giving back to the Ondo community that nurtured him.

In his remarks, the governor of Ondo state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Omoyofunmi Henry, expressed the state government’s appreciation to Chief Awosika for the laudable gesture.

He described the donation as a clear demonstration of effective public-private partnership in sports development.

The governor assured that the state government would ensure the proper management, maintenance and optimal use of the facilities to serve the intended purpose of youth engagement and talent development.

He added that the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to empowering young people, expanding sports infrastructure and creating pathways for youths to excel constructively.

A former governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, who was present at the event, applauded Chief Afolami Awosika for his enduring commitment to community development and youth empowerment.

He described the donation of the sports courts as a timely and impactful contribution that reflects a deep understanding of the role sports play in shaping healthy, disciplined and productive youths.

Mimiko noted that investments of this nature strengthen social development efforts and complement government initiatives aimed at nurturing talents from the grassroots.

He encouraged other well-meaning individuals and corporate organizations to emulate the gesture, stressing that collaborative efforts remain vital to building sustainable platforms that will empower young people and secure a brighter future for Ondo state.

The Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Kiladejo, who graced the occasion, commended Chief Awosika for his foresight and commitment to youth empowerment through sports.

The monarch described the donation as a strategic investment in the future of Ondo youths, noting that sports remain one of the most effective platforms for character building, discipline and social cohesion.

Oba Kiladejo further emphasized that the facilities would complement traditional and governmental efforts aimed at redirecting the energies of young people towards productive ventures.

He reiterated his belief that sustained engagement through sports would help reduce crime, foster unity and position Ondo as a breeding ground for outstanding athletes at national and international levels.

A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Chief Afolami Victor Awosika (CAVA) tournaments, which featured competitive games across different sports, with winners emerging in each category.

In the lawn tennis event, the Senior Staff Tennis Club, Akure, defeated the Ondo Tennis Club to claim the gold medal in the doubles category, while Olakunle Gbologe of UNIMED triumphed over Olanrewaju Akinnagbe of Ondo Tennis Club to emerge winner in the singles category.

In basketball, the UNIMED team outplayed the Don Bosco Youths with a scoreline of 73–55 to win the gold medal, while the Ondo City Spikers Club defeated Akure Dynamite Spikers Club in two straight sets to clinch the gold medal in the volleyball category.

How women entrepreneurs can succeed, by Awosika, others

Women in business experts, including former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria, Ibukun Awosika, have shared strategies on how women entrepreneurs in the country can grow their businesses.

They spoke at the Women High Achievers Trybe (WHATrybe) conference hosted at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, with the theme ‘Elevating Women Entrepreneurs: Strategies For Success’.

According to Awosika, a company’s ability to succeed as an entrepreneur is determined by its ideation, planning, and execution phases.

She urged the women to establish credibility, understand the marketplace, and figure out how to relaunch their businesses when faced with challenges. She also encouraged the women to be innovative, and challenged them to think about human capital management for a successful business.

She said: “Learn to have proof of concept by testing out business ideas on a small scale. Then, if the idea is proven to be right, you must be able to consider if it is scalable. You must ask if the idea can sell in a hundred or a thousand units. Your ability to discipline yourself, manage your resources, and not get excited by the first set of successes without retaining resources for the growth of the business, is key as well.

“Your ability to find the right talent and not look for cheap labour like hiring your cousins, sisters, or brothers who don’t have a job which can hurt your business is key. It is better to have 10 staff that can sell to a hundred than have 20 that don’t benefit you. It’s important to make your value system and character a part of the strategy because people do business with people they can trust.

“Your business must be able to reinvent itself per season in today’s world. Innovation is the major strategic tool for any business to survive. You must have the courage to discontinue something because it is not working. A lot of changes are going on in the world. Find how you can reset your business.”

The Convener, Kiki Okewale, explained that the event was to give women in business skills they need to succeed.

This is not another random community. We want to make money together, share opportunities, travel the world together, and be a great example to every woman out there.

“I want the women to know that if we collaborate, we can go far. We have been told many times to compete but, I want you to know that collaboration is a new competition. There is somebody somewhere that can collaborate, bring new clients for you and you have to look out for it. Let us come together as a community. If your fellow woman is winning it is your win as well,” she said.

  • Ibukun Awosika: Retraction

On Sunday, November 18, 2018, The Nation published in its Flair pullout, an interview titled ‘I Still Kneel for My Husband’ supposedly conducted by one of our reporters with Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria.
The subject of the interview has since denied speaking with the said reporter.
Following the denial and other complaints received on the interview, we initiated an in-house review process which established that the reporter passed off the bulk of an old interview with Awosika published in The Nation on October 7, 2012, as a new one conducted with the subject at an Afterschool Graduate Development Centre event in Lagos last week.
While the reporter responsible for this unprofessional act will face appropriate disciplinary action, we hereby retract the said interview and apologise to Mrs. Awosika and First Bank of Nigeria for any embarrassment caused.
  • Awosika challenges youths on self-reliance

FirstBank Plc Chairman Mrs Ibukun Awosika has urged youths to be self-reliant and be optimistic in overcoming challenges of life.

She made the call at a workshop organised by the bank for students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

While narrating her experiences and how she climbed the ladder of success, Mrs Awosika advised youths to be prepared to be champions in any society.

She said: “The struggle of man, which begins at birth is a necessity for every individual to face. Every human must be determined to weather the storm of life, if success is desired.

“Students should think of what they can do for Nigeria, rather than what Nigeria can do for them because the country is a land of opportunities, despite all odds.

“Our students should not allow the challenges of the nation to dampen their morale; rather, they should see themselves as those who will impact positively on the nation.”

According to Mrs Awosika, when the society changes for the better, the outcome will result in emergence of good leaders who will take the nation to greater height.

The bank chairperson said: “If every Nigerian is good, we won’t produce bad leaders.” She, therefore, urged students to believe in themselves and be patriotic.

She added: “Every season is different in life and you can only succeed during your own season because it has its own time.

“Ask yourselves as youths, ‘how prepared am I to make my own impact during your season?’

“You are accountable adults at this stage. Be old enough to discipline yourselves.”

  • Awosika to youths: you’re Nigeria’s hope

FIRST Bank of Nigeria Plc Chairman Mrs. Ibukun Awosika has urged Nigerian youths to believe that there is hope for Nigeria, emphasising that the youths are the hope the nation is eagerly anticipating.

Mrs. Awosika spoke yesterday as the keynote speaker at the 13th convocation of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State.

This year’s convocation was tagged: ‘Release of Eagles 2018. She spoke on the theme: “Influencing change in Africa: Roles and responsibilities of emerging leaders”.

As one of the firm believers in the Nigerian project, Mrs. Awosika said she sees avalanche of opportunities in Nigeria regardless of its present social and economic challenges, adding that the youths are gladiators of these opportunities.

“I want to tell you that there is hope for this country, and you are that hope we are eagerly anticipating,” she said.

Her words: “Despite our social and economic challenges, I still remain a positive person. Do not allow anybody to tell you we have all hope lost in this country.

“You are a shining example of the materials that would convince young men and women out there that they did not have to perish inside the Mediterranean sea while desperately seeking greener pastures in Europe. You are the ones that will shut the mouth of that President, who described our country as ‘shithole’

Using her life experience as an example, the bank’s chairman said hardly has anything changed over the last three decades that she started her business. Nonetheless, she said her determination to brave the odds, saw her to the pinnacle of her career.

“To succeed in life is all about perception. I recall one of the challenges I had when I started my business 30 years ago was power. Today, nothing has changed about power now; but I’m at the pinnacle of my career. This simply meant what I saw then was opportunities and not problems. If I had waited for power to adjust then, I wouldn’t have been where I am today.”

She encouraged them to be flexible in a knowledge-seeking world in their quest for relevance,

“In this generation, innovation becomes so fluid that whatever you acquired today becomes obsolete within two years. Therefore, you need to continually think through things, be more creative, daring and enterprising to remain relevant,” she advised.

She warned them not to be worried when they see others getting rich without knowing the source of their wealth.  She also appealed to them to admit the stark reality that some of their contemporaries with whom they all graduated yesterday would strike gold early. She warned them not to show envy but celebrate them, knowing full well that by fate, man is destined to arrive at his Canaan land at God’s appointed time.

Chancellor CU Dr. David Oyedepo said Nigeria and other institutions have a lot to learn from CU in terms of prudence and right leadership.

He said: “Since 1999 that we started this university, we have never borrowed. Besides, we have never run out of power or electricity. At no time did we have any cause to adjust our calendar for convocation. This can only be achieved through the right leadership and prudent use of resources.

“This is what is lacking in Nigeria today. Unfortunately, many of our leaders don’t know the definition of leadership. A leader does not make progress by staying on the same spot; he needs to constantly be on the move. Leadership is not just mere talking but, demonstrating by taking the lead. Leadership not an endowment, but a product of outstanding accomplishments…

“I implore you all to start thinking changing and start thinking solutions to challenges confronting the nation. ” Oyedepo concluded.

The graduating students comprised 238 first class recipients, 746 second class upper honours, 452 second class lower, 86 in third class as well as 365 post-graduate students.

Miss Salami Toluwani emerged the best students with Cumulative Gradient Point of Average(CGPA) of 4.99 from Industrial Chemistry, College of Sciences.

Its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aderemi Atayero, said five of the 1,887graduands had already been chartered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.

Atayero said CU is glad that many of their graduates are job creators, while those who sought employment are creating a difference at their various duty posts as testified by their employers.
