AWS deepens commitment in Nigeria’s Digital Economy, Cloud Infrastructure

In a landmark development for Nigeria’s technological evolution, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has significantly expanded its presence and commitment to the country’s digital economy.

This strategic move was highlighted in a recent media round table in Lagos, led by Uwem Ukpong, the Vice President of Global Services at AWS Ukpong’s leadership and insights are pivotal in AWS’s initiatives to integrate and evolve Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and services.

At the heart of AWS’s increased involvement in Nigeria is the noteworthy meeting between Uwem Ukpong and His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima GCON of The Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This meeting, pivotal in its scope and potential impact, laid the groundwork for a collaborative effort towards digital transformation in Nigeria.

Vice President Shettima provided invaluable insights and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s strong commitment to not only strengthening Nigeria’s economy but also embracing new investment opportunities in technology and innovation.

Ukpong, leveraging his Nigerian heritage and extensive experience in spearheading technological initiatives across Africa, expressed profound gratitude for the warm reception by His Excellency, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Hadejia, and the entire team.

He emphasized the significance of this high-level engagement as a major step forward in working closely with the Nigerian Government to deliver on its promise of a renewed and hopeful future.

“It was a privilege and honour to meet His Excellency, the Vice President of The Federal Republic of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima GCON and discuss strategies around digital transformation. AWS’s investment in Nigeria encompasses not only technological infrastructure but also a strong commitment to human capital development. Recognizing the importance of skill-building in the digital age, AWS has made significant strides in training and upskilling the Nigerian workforce.

Initiatives such as AWS Academy, AWS re/Start, and AWS Educate have been fundamental in training over 50,000 Nigerians in cloud technologies since 2017. These educational programs are crucial in equipping the Nigerian workforce with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

AWS study predicts massive economic uplift for Nigeria through cloud adoption

A groundbreaking study commissioned by Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), has unveiled astounding potential for Nigeria’s economy.

The report, conducted by Telecom Advisory Services LLC and directed by Raul Katz, Director of Business Strategy Research at the Columbia Institute for Tele-information (Columbia Business School), asserts that cloud adoption in Nigeria could unleash an economic windfall of N30.2 trillion by 2033.

This equates to 0.36% of Nigeria’s cumulative GDP, signaling a significant opportunity for economic growth through cloud technology

In 2021, cloud adoption already had a notable impact on Nigeria’s GDP, contributing 0.02% and generating NGN 82.9 billion in economic value.

Remarkably, over 71% of this impact was attributed to national productivity gains, emphasizing the “spillover effects” on the broader economy. The remaining 29% stemmed from cloud investments by public and private organizations.

The study further reveals that for every 1% increase in cloud adoption by Nigerian organizations, the country experienced a 0.01% rise in GDP. While this is behind South Africa, the regional leader, where a 1% increase in cloud penetration yields a 0.06% GDP boost, the potential remains substantial.

Extrapolating this data, a 10% increase in cloud penetration across the entire Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region could result in annual economic spillover effects estimated at USD $3.8 billion.

Dr. Raul Katz commented on the significance of this research, stating, “Until recently, research on the economic impact of cloud was focused at the firm-level. To address this gap, our team at Telecom Advisory Services developed a state-of-the-art econometric model, leveraging global series of data on cloud adoption between 2014 and 2021.”

Amrote Abdella, General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at AWS, emphasized the potential for the SSA region, saying, “AWS is committed to supporting its customers and partners in Nigeria throughout their cloud journey. We firmly believe that cloud technology will be crucial in driving innovation, boosting productivity, and scaling businesses in the region over the next decade.”

The report highlights that the economic impact of cloud computing is tied to returns to scale – greater adoption leading to proportionally greater productivity gains and economic impact.

However, in 2021, only 27% of Nigerian organizations had adopted cloud computing, significantly lower than Western Europe and North America’s adoption rates of 49%. This underscores a clear opportunity for Nigeria to enhance its cloud penetration and reap substantial benefits.

Amrote Abdella added, “With the current forecast, the economic impact of the cloud is undeniable and is poised as a key catalyst for economic prosperity. As such, it is important for businesses in the region to invest in cloud computing technology to stay competitive and boost their economic potential.”

The report identifies four key advantages of cloud computing: enhancing business efficiency and effectiveness, offering access to a wide range of services, boosting productivity, and promoting environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions per unit of data transmitted.
