  • Southwest governors get wake-up call on security

Agitated over rising insecurity in the land, regional leaders are meeting on how to fight criminal elements in their zones.

In Osogbo, the Osun State capital, Afenifere leaders met on Thursday, urging Southwest governors to collaborate in securing lives and property.

The Organised Private Sector (OPS), in collaboration with Southeast governors, has scheduled a meeting for today on cooperation with the police and other stakeholders on the security situation.

These developments came on the heels of a presidential order to security agencies to end violence in Taraba State.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who condemned the attacks on Kona, Taraba State, ordered security agencies to “immediately and decisively”end the violence.

His Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, reported him as warning that attacks on innocent people would not be tolerated.

The statement said: “No group of people has the right to surround innocent people and unleash murderous violence on them.”

He said resorting to self-help was an invitation to anarchy, which in turn will make everyone unsafe, noting that “in a cycle of violence characterised by revenge and counter-revenge, there are no winners.”

According to him, in a state of permanent hostilities, people undermine not only law and order, but also their own ability to conduct their everyday businesses in peace.

He said: “I always wonder how people can conduct their businesses in the absence of peace and tranquillity because violence ruins everything and leaves the people worse off.

“It is difficult to build a virile nation where hate and intolerance dominate the people’s minds. It’s easier to destroy than to build. People should count the economic costs of this violence to their own lives.”

The President warned that a situation where community leaders abandon their responsibilities and allow thugs to set the agenda was dangerous for peace and security.

He criticised leaders who publicly preach peace, but privately promote hate and intolerance which ultimately culminate in violent destruction of life and property.

Southwest leaders, under the aupices of Afenifere Egbe Ilosiwaju Yoruba, discussed security challenges in the region at the residence of a Second Republic senator and leader of the group, Chief Ayo Fasanmi.

The group urged the Southwest governors to urgently find solution to kidnapping and banditry, which it said had become a regular occurrence in many parts of the zone.

In a communique, signed by Pa Fasanmi, Senator Biyi Durojaye and Prince Taju Olusi, the group advised the governors to collaborate and form a regional security council to tackle the insecurity.

The group concluded that it would visit the governors to know the steps they plan to take to curtail kidnapping and banditry.

The group commended the immediate past governors for their outstanding performance.

They hailed the All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Chairman Adams Oshiomole and other party leaders for a successful and rancour-free elections of National Assembly leaders.

The Afenifere Egbe Ilosiwaju Yoruba also congratulated Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila on their election as Senate President and Speaker of the House Representatives.

The group thanked Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola for sending a delegation, led by his Chief of Staff Dr. Charles Diji Akintola, to attend its meeting.

Also, the group expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for the honour on the late M.K.O. Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, and for naming a nafional monument after him as well as recognising June 12 as Democracy Day.

Appreciating national leaders of the APC for “repositioning the Southwest from its pitiable position between 2011 and 2015”, they urged all aggrieved Yoruba leaders to unite and work in the interest of the Yoruba, urging them to “reconsider their stand to work against the overall interest of the geo-politocal zone in 2023”.

At the meeting were former deputy governors of Osun and Oyo states, Sooko Adeleke Olawoyin and Chief Iyiola Oladokun, Bayo Aina, Chief Akin Fasae and Mutiu Are, Chief S.M. Akindele, among others.

Today’s summit in the east will discuss areas of mutual support and cooperation amongst stakeholders to enhance the ease of doing business within the region.

It is expected to boost security facilities, community policing, economic prosperity and job creation.

Dr. Nkemka Jombo- Ofo, the Commissioner representing the Organised Private Sector and South East in the Police Service Commission, will set the agenda for the summit with a paper on the objective of the event.

Another Commissioner in the PSC, Rommy Mom, representing human rights organisations, will deliver the key note address.

Governors of the region, top security chiefs, including PSC Chairman, Inspector-General, Commissioners of Police and captains of Industry are billed to attend.

In Yola, the police parade 58 terror-gang members, including robbery and kidnap suspects.

Fifty-eight suspects (Yan Shilla), otherwise called Shilla Boys and seven major receivers of stolen goods (mostly phones), were paraded by the Adamawa Police Command.

Commissioner of Police Audu Madaki said that the suspects, who are usually armed with  cutlasses, knives and other weapons, using Keke NAPEP (tricycle) for transportation, specialise in robbing victims of money and hand phones, especially within Adamawa’s two cosmopolitan local government areas – Yola North (Jimeta) and Yola South (Yola town).

Madaki said the seven suspected stolen items receivers specialise in taking the phones the Yan Shilla steal and erasing the memories to make it impossible for the police to track and recover the phones.

He said the seven were among eight major receivers that investigations had indicated and that the police would continue to hunt for the eighth, who is at large.

Among the paraded suspects were those arrested in last two weeks for attacking a commercial tricycle operator immediately after Governor Umaru Fintiri visited their hideout on June 12.

Recovered from them  are 10 cutlasses, 18 knives, 17 pairs of scissors, 95 hand phones and accessories, nine computer laptops and accessories, 80 wraps of Indian hemp, and seven bottles of exzol/passion/diazeppam drugs.

  • Fasanmi hails Southwest governors

Leader of Afenifere (Egbe Ilosiwaju Yoruba) Senator Ayo Fasanmi has hailed Southwest governors for their efforts to fight banditry and curb insecurity in the region.

Fasanmi noted that the governors are living up to the expectation of the people through collaborative efforts in tackling insecurity.

A statement by the group’s spokesman, Chief Biodun Akin-Fasae, reads: “The time is now for everyone to see insecurity as a collective problem which must be tackled without ethnic, religious and cultural colouration. The governors are admonished to work hard and free our forests from criminals who are now making life difficult for our people”.

The elder statesman also praised Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi, for leading his colleagues to the President in Abuja to discuss the insecurity and attendant issues affecting the country, as well as Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for his election as Chairman, Southwest Governors’ Forum.

At the endorsement which took place at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Chief Ayo Fasanmi, Deputy Governor of Lagos and Ogun States, Mrs. Idiat Adebule and Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga and former Minister, Demola Seriki who represented Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The gubernatorial candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in Lagos state, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu was also at the event.

Fasanmi said that Buhari deserved another term in the office.

He said: “I want all of you to work and vote for Buhari who has performed very credibly and I think he deserved second term in the office.

“He is the only candidate that is campaigning about corrupt free society.

“I am pleased that all the South West under the APC fold are going this direction.”

Osinbajo, who was a special guest of honour, arrived at 3.50pm and was handed a copy of the lecture titled: Restructuring for harmonious and optimal socio-economic development: Prospects and challenges delivered by Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi.

  • Fasanmi extols Basorun at 80

Elderstateman, Senator Ayo Fasanmi, has extolled the virtues of one-time Secretary to the Lagos State Government under the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Chief Olorunfunmi Bashorun, as he turns 80 today.

In a statement signed by him,  Fasanmi described Basorun as a fulfilled politician whose impeccable character stood him out as a progressive.

He said the Awoist was a very dedicated politician when he served as SSG in Lagos under the defunct UPN administration of Alhaji Lateef Jakande.

He said: “It has been more than four decades that I have known Funmi Basorun.  He was a young and very dedicated politician when he served as SSG to the Lagos State Government under the umbrella of our great party UPN under the leadership of the Indefatigable Awo.

“Chief Lateef Jakande was the governor of Lagos State; his massive support for the Jakande government brought numerous developments to the state.  I can say Funmi Basorun is a fulfilled politician.”

Afenifere chieftain, others hail APC leaders

Afenifere chieftain Senator Ayo Fasanmi has congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership on the success of its national convention.

Fasanmi said the rancour-free convention and the emergence of a new executive committee showed that APC would wrest power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

He said the fusion of the legacy parties that gave birth to the APC was in the interest of the nation, adding that the party was on a rescue operation to restore Nigeria’s glory.

Fasanmi said: “It is unbelievable that a nation endowed with human and natural resources has been virtually brought to its knees by corrupt, inept and purposeless government. There is mass unemployment, infrastructure decay, insecurity, poverty and hunger in the land. Everything has broken down.

“I have no doubt that the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and his executive members will lead the party to electoral victory next year. I congratulate the former Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, for successfully handing over to competent hands led by Odigie-Oyegun.”

The second republic senator urged aggrieved members to put the interest of the party and the nation at heart and embrace peace, adding: “It is God that gives power to anyone, takes it or denies anyone of i.”

Fasanmi urged APC members to work together as a family to “rescue the nation from the PDP’s misrule and end the era of impunity and lawlessness”.

An APC chieftain in Ogun State Mr. Bolu Owotomo also congratulated the party on the success of the convention.

Owotomo urged Odigie-Oyegun and the National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to explain to Nigerians “why APC is a better alternative to the PDP and how the party’s plans for the country if voted into power at the centre”.

Owotomo, who is aspiring to represent Ijebu North East in the House of Assembly, said there was need to reconcile aggrieved members.

He said: “We should ensure an issue based alternative that will purposefully and constructively engage and challenge the PDP with decency and maturity as prescribed by democratic tenets and principles.

“I commend APC for a successful convention and congratulate Odigie-Oyegun, Mohammed and other officers on their election.”

Ibadan North East Local Government Caretaker Chairman Mr. Ladi Oluokun also congratulated the APC on the peaceful conduct of the convention, saying it shows that the APC is built on “peaceful co-existence”.

Oluokun said: “With this successful national convention, I am confident that Nigerians are gradually seeing a party with ideology. It has shown how united and peaceful we are as a party in all units. Nigerians yearn for positive change, which the party represents. I urge Nigerians to stand by the APC and vote en masse for the party in all elections.”

  • Retrace your steps, Fasanmi urges Bamidele

Retrace your steps, Fasanmi urges Bamidele

Second Republic Senator Ayo Fasanmi yesterday lamented the crack in the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC), warning the House of Representatives member, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, to retrace his steps to the party.

Bamidele, who represents Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency in the House, recently defected to the Labour Party (LP), where he hopes to contest for the governorship next year. He was one of the leaders of the party in the state before his defection.

Fasanmi, who reflected on history, advised the federal legislator to ponder on the fate of prominent politicians, who left their political families for other camps, based on temporary political challenges.

He also advised him to learn from the political career of the famous Ekiti son, the late Chief Akinwole Omoboriowo, who deserted his leader, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in a bid to dislodge former Ondo State Governor Adekunle Ajasin from power. Fasanmi recalled that Omoboriowo, despite his popularity, never bounced back into reckoning after he left the proscribed Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).

The elder statesman said that past experience should instruct ambitious young men and women to think deeply and peep into the future before taking far-reaching decisions that have implications for their political future, their political groups, and the welfare of the state they hope to govern.

Fasanmi, who spoke with our correspondent on phone, said: “The defection of Bamidele from the APC is most unfortunate. It is an unfortunate incident. He is a boy I know very well. Well, he is a man now. I first saw him in 1994, when I was a member of the Constitutional Conference Commission set up by the late military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha. I have followed his career since then.

“I am disappointed. This is an unfortunate situation. As an elder statesman, I will advice Fayemi (Governor Kayode) not to be diverted. The APC is on a sound footing. Fayemi is doing well as the governor of Ekiti State. The APC is on course in Ekiti”.

Fasanmi recalled that the parting of ways between Awolowo and Omoboriowo was painful to many Ekiti patriots, who equally loved the former deputy governor. He said that history is merely repeating itself as Bamidele will be seen to be parting ways with his leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He added: “There were Awolowo and Akintola. There were Ajasin and Omoboriowo. Now, there are Fayemi and Bamidele. But this should not be so in Yorubaland. We should learn from the past”.

The veteran politician noted that Bamidele’s career in the progressive fold under the Tinubu’s tutelage has been impressive, adding that he had climbed the ladders of leadership and fame as a key functionary of government in Lagos State.

He said that it is risky for a promising politician like Bamidele to desert the party he had jointly nurtured with compatriots and seek refuge in another, where some people may perceive him as a stranger. Recalling Awo’s advice to his disciples, he said: “It is better to discuss and disagree in your party and fight for your interest there, but if it appears that you can’t have your way, you should jettison your personal interest and subscribe to the collective interest, where accommodation would be found for your interest. In the progressive camp, where service to the people is the watchword, you cannot be a loser”.

Fasanmi, who described the LP chieftain as a competent and vibrant person, warned that a progressive politician may lose relevance outside his original political family.

He added: “The question people are asking is: what does Bamidele want? I understand that he has served as a party officer, special adviser, commissioner for two terms. Now, he is in the House of Representatives. He who the god will destroy will first make mad. This should not happen to Bamidele. That is why I want him to retrace his steps. His grievances can still be addressed within the progressives family. I like him so much. So, I want him to learn from history”.

  • ‘National conference is a diversionary strategy’

‘National conference is a diversionary strategy’

Afenifere chieftain Senator Ayo Fasanmi was a member of the National Assembly in the First and Second Republics. He spoke with Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN on the proposed national conference, regional integration, presidential system and other partisan issues.

Some Nigerians are of the view that the proposed National Con-ference is a dis-traction. What is your comment?

They are right. You know the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Goodluck Jonathan symbolises is a sinking ship. Right now, the party is heading towards total disintegration. Jonathan is doing everything possible to ensure that it does not go under completely. Thus, he has embarked on a salvage operation for PDP, the before, Jonathan and his party were against the national conference. But they suddenly embraced it in order to engage people in discussing one thing or the other, so that they can have ample time to settle the crises within the party. Their strategy is to keep Nigerians talking and arguing and use the opportunity to mend fences in the PDP. To me,the planned conference is a diversionary strategy.

I have my reservations about the whole process. What Nigerians particularly, we in the Afenifere are yearning for is a Sovereign National Conference that would address urgent national problems. It is unfortunate that the Fasoranti-led Afenifere is championing the national conference being planned by Jonathan to settle score with people that are against them.

Are you surprised by the appearance of the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) before the Presidential Planning Committee on National Conference?

Not at all, I will personally advise that we should not boycott whatever conference they are planning. I remember in 1965, when the Action Group decided to boycott the federal election, it was counter- productive because it gave the opposition an edge. The opposition candidates were returned. For that bitter experience, we have resolved not to boycot any programme. I am happy the ARG is taking part and that it has submitted a paper stating our position on crucial national issues. Nevertheless, I have my reservations on the timing of the national conference. It is a strategy to buy time for the PDP to gain ground where it has lost. Jonathan is planning to elongate his tenure. We will not allow it. There must be a time lag. The conference should not spread to 2015. Jonathan is on his way out.

The President has said that the conference report will be presented the National Assembly to give it legal backing. Is it necessary?

You see, for Jonathan to say he will refer the report of the national conference to the National Assembly shows either he doesn’t understand what the conference is all about or he’s not serious about it. Like I said earlier, what we need is a Sovereign National Conference in which the people will have the final say on its report. The conference is expected among other things to produce a new constitution for the country, alloww us to decide whether all the ethnic nationalities still want to co-exist as a country and what kind of relationship do we want? The delegates should have unfettered freedom on all issues of national importance. There should be a plebiscite on the report because sovereign power belongs to the people. Jonathan’s planned conference is to distract the attention of the people from crucial problems like corruption, unemployment, insecurity of lives and property, education and health sectors that are in comatose.

Observers say the President’s ambition to contest in 2015 is the root cause of the crisis rocking the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. As an elder statesman, will you advise President Jonathan to seek re-election?

Jonathan should know how to quit when there is no ovation for him at all. In any civilised society, PDP should have been shown the way out. What are his achievements as President of the country? Corruption in government is getting worse by the day. A minister used public fund to buy bullet proof cars worth N255 million without approval and the President says he would set up an investigation panel to tell him what to do. Is it not funny that a President, who hired a minister, cannot take action against his aide that has tarnished the image of his administration? I am not surprised. We have heard cases of corruption involving those in government and they are getting away with them. Former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, could have got away with the public funds he stole while in office, if not for the British government. What of the fuel subsidy scandal involving relations of those in government and PDP promoters? What has Jonathan achieved in terms of security, mass unemployment, falling standard of education, the university lecturers have been on strike for four months without solutions.

What is Jonathan coming back to do in 2015? Does he want to come back and continue looting? No way. By the grace of God, the PDP will be buried in 2015. The PDP is like a wheel barrow waiting for a train like the All Progressive Congress (APC) to crush it. When I heard that Jonathan went to Jerusalem, my prayer was that God will touch his heart, so that he would not destroy the country further.

The other time Jonathan came up with the idea of centenary celebration. The question I keep asking is what are we celebrating-kidnapping, raping Boko Haram insurgency, oil theft, massive corruption, disrespect for the rule of law? It is unfortunate that we have found ourselves in this mess. It is very painful that Nigeria leads in anything that is negative in the world. I am sad to hear that Nigeria is one of the most corrupt and poverty-stricken nations.

Why have you not been playing the role of Afenifere leader, since your election as the deputy leader?

I thought at 88, I should hand over to young ones. We should give them a chance. They should be allowed to grow. They are very active and mentally alert. The young ones are doing it very well. The pride of a father is to see his children taking over part of his functions in his life time while he guides them from the rear. I am happy that the likes of Bisi Akande, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Segun Osoba, to mention a few, are not found wanting in this respect. They are up to the task.

You are one of the few surviving disciples of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Would you say that your contemporaries still uphold Awo’s philosophy or they have waivered?

I am almost alone. Most of my colleagues have gone, even though we may not be in the same party. All my friends in Osun have died. The APC interim chairman, Bisi Akande, got to know Chief Awolowo through me. And like Paul, the Apostle, Akande almost superceded me in his commitment to Awo’s philosophy. As a party man, he has excelled. So also are the young ones like Segun Osoba, a committed Awoist, and a great defender of Awo’s philosophy. He’s forthright and consistent. Then, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is in the fore front of the struggle to preserve the legacies of our great leader. Tinubu is brazing the trail of actualising Awo’s vision. Though my colleagues have passed on, but the young ones are doing well. They should continue to consult us.The struggle continues.

How would you assess the performance of President Jonathan, after four years in office?

He has not performed. If he had, we will not be talking of pervasive corruption, insecurity, mass unemployment, armed robbery, kidnapping and raping. That was why Chief Bisi A kande described him as kindergarten President because his government has no clues to the challenges facing the country. You can deceive people for some time, but not all the time. PDP is a collection of marauders. A party that can’t put its house in order has no right to rule. That is why things are getting worse in the country. Recklessness, impunity and disrespect for the rule of law are hallmarks of the Jonathan administration. No nation can prosper in such circumstance.

Regional integration is one of the developmental strategies of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). How best do you think it can be achieved?

The Southwest governors have started working towards achieving regional integration in the zone and they are doing well. They have embarked on projects that will enhance development in the region. For instance, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state is trying to construct a road that will connect Osun with Lagos and Oyo states to facilitate movements of goods and services across the geo-political zone. I think they are also planning to build rail lines that will cut across the region. All this will enhance economic activities. The Southwest and Osun, in particular, can feed the whole of Nigeria. But the problem is how to transport the food to the cities with convenience so that the farmers can get adequate reward for their labour. Awo did it before in the old Western Region when he turned the West into a pace setter in Nigeria.

In Ekiti State, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele and Goveror Fayemi are locked in a battle of political supremacy. As an indigene, what is your advice?

Fayemi has been a fantastic governor in Ekiti state. He has transformed the state within three years. That explains the gale of endorsement for his second term. Every progressive element within and outside Ekiti State is saying he should be given another term to consolidate his achievements. Opeyemi has the right to aspire for governorship. But I am advising him to haste slowly. He must not allow the reputation he had built over the years to be destroyed by personal ambition. He must not allow forces outside the party to use him as an instrument of destabilisation.

You are based in Oshogbo. How would you rate Governor Aregbesola?

Aregbesola is a first class strategist, who holds aloft Awo’s legacy. He has rekindled Awo’s philosophy on education and other program-mes designed to make life abundance for the citizens of Osun. It is just like a Daniel comes to judgment. He is a wonderful young man. The greatest asset he has is a woman as his deputy, who is a pride to womanhood. He is doing very well. Osun has become a state of Omoluabi under Aregbe. Things are changing for good in Osun . People may have to experience certain inconveniences as a result of developmental projects going on across the state, but at the end of the day, they will smile.

What of the governor of your home state, Ekiti?

Governor Fayemi is an intellectual per se. He is committed to ideological solution to problems. He is committed and dedicated to the service of Ekiti State. His deputy is also an intellectual. Intellectualism, coupled with ideology, constitutes a veritable engine of socio-economic and political development.

As a federal legislator in the First and Second Republics, which system of government do you prefer?

In the First Republic, we operated parliamentary system and presidential system in the Second Republic. The presidential system is very expensive. Whatever that can be done to make it less prone to corruption and less expensive should be done. It pays much premium on service to the people and not promotion of self.
