  • Ekiti Assembly suspends lawmaker for “Sleeping too much at plenary”

The Ekiti State House of Assembly yet again treated the people of the Fountain of Knowledge to another comical show by suspending a member for “sleeping too much” during legislative sessions.

The lawmakers slammed an indefinite suspension on the member representing Ikere Constituency II, Mr. Sunday Akinniyi, for allegedly sleeping at plenary for three years.

They also accused Akinniyi of “breeding terrorism within the institution of the House, violence towards the Mace in a properly constituted plenary session and belligerence attitude and acts of bellicosity against his colleagues.”

He was also accused of pugnacious behaviours in his constituency against his own people, all amounting to gross misconduct and unbecoming of any honourable member of this House.

The Assembly further accused Akinniyi of “regularly regular in absenting himself especially when issues relating to his constituency are slated for discussion.”

A source at the Assembly told The Nation on Wednesday that thesuspension was carried out to pre-empt a plan by Akinniyi and two other lawmakers to announce their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akinniyi, who has fell out with Governor Ayo Fayose was removed as the Chief Whip on May 24 for his alleged disloyalty to Governor Ayo Fayose and other unparliamentary activities.

He was axed for his alleged loyalty to a former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, who has since defected to the APC.

Akinniyi was removed alongside the former Deputy Speaker, Mr. Olusegun Adewumi. Every attempt to get Akinniyi’s reaction proved abortive at press time but one of his political associates said he would address a news conference “as soon as possible.”

House Committee Chairman on Information Dr Samuel Omotoso said the suspension follows series of allegations levied against him by the Leader of Business, Mr. Tunji Akinyele, after due diligence investigation carried out by a panel led by Mr. Ayodele Fajemilehin

Omotoso claimed that Akinniyi was initially removed as the Chief Whip of the House “when his malfeasance was becoming unbearable, in an attempt to wake him up from slumber and alive to his responsibilities to his people.”

Omotoso said: “Rather than achieve this, the few occasions he presented himself for official duties in the House, Hon Akinniyi is in the habits of sleeping from the beginning of any program to the end to the extent that he was nicknamed ‘the sleeping Honourable.’

“Several attempts by the Hon Speaker advising him to pay attention to his people and his health has been rebuffed with insults.

“It is in reference to all these that this House viewed the failures of Hon Akinniyi as incompatible with the spirit of good governance and quality representation of the present House of Assembly and he is hereby suspended indefinitely.”

The House also barred Hon Akinniyi Sunday from the vicinity of the Asembly and mandated the Clerk to lodge a formal complaint of threat to lives of Honourable Members against him to the security agencies.

The Information Committee chair added that the Assembly will be alive to the noble doctrine of active service as elected representatives of our various constituencies.

Omotoso also advised Akinniyi to pay more attention to his health and use the period of his suspension “to come out of his embarrassing Sleep Syndrome by sleeping at home rather than chasing shadows.”

  • Fayemi slams Fayose for owing Ekiti monarchs Five months arrears

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has promised to end the sufferings being experienced by the people of the state under the administration of Governor Ayo Fayose.

Fayemi accused Fayose of inflicting hardship on the various segment of the population including workers, school pupils, parents, business owners and traditional rulers.

He revealed that apart from workers owed arrears of between five and nine month arrears of salaries, Fayose is also allegedly owing traditional rulers five month arrears of allowances.

Fayemi also slammed the governor for refusing to disclose the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) since coming to power in 2014.

Speaking during a special interview programme on Voice 89.9 FM Sunday night, Fayemi said Fayose had no accuse to be owing workers noting that N253 billion has accrued to the Ekiti treasury.

A vote for the APC ticket, according to him, is a vote for commitment to the positive transformation of Ekiti, experience in governance and connection with Abuja to influence things in favour of the state and its people.

Fayemi promised to expand the scope of his eight-point agenda to launch Ekiti on the path of development again regretting that the state has retrogressed under Fayose’s watch as the governor has discarded human development policies of the preceding government.

He regretted that Fayose allegedly played politics and denied Ekiti the opportunity of accessing funds meant for rice production by the Federal Government despite the fact that an Ekiti indigene his (Fayemi’s) former Commissioner, Mr. Jide Arowosafe.

Fayemi stated that states like Kebbi, Jigawa and Ogun had benefited from noting that Ekiti would have used the funds to develop rice production in Igbemo-Ekiti and other rice belts in the state.\

The APC flag bearer also debunked the allegation of the PDP-led government that he is seeking a return to power to revenge against workers saying he is on a rescue mission and not on vengeance mission against anybody.

He said: “On what basis should I come on a vengeance mission? Nobody has offended me, the secret of June 21st 2014 is quite open to us all. We all know of Capt. Koli, Koro (Obanikoro) and few others.”

Criticizing Fayose for alleged anti-people policies, Fayemi said: “You refused to pay teachers for ten months but you are saying ‘we may not pay your salaries but the man coming wants to sack you.’

“During Fayemi’s (first) administration, no final year secondary school student paid WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and JAMB fees but now, pupils from primary to SS3 students are now paying taxes.

“He called teachers to the Government House sometime ago and a woman among them told him the truth. My government didn’t charge any pupil or student a dime.

“We ran a qualitative, free and functional education while I was the Governor. Pupils now pay Tax, pay for SSCE, no more free JAMB forms. Ekiti now has the lowest enrollment in Education in Southwest as it is today which is strange to us all.

“We didn’t owe workers monthly salary except for September 2014 and this was because the incoming governments approached our financial institutions and opt to halt our arrangements.

“We had regular training and re-training to workers in Ekiti, we paid core subject allowances, rural allowances to teachers, car loans, housing loans to our workers.

“I heard that all what I did for Obas have been stopped, in fact, our Obas are being owed five months salaries. Did all these happen when I was in government?”

Fayemi added that Fayose’s alleged harsh and unfriendly policies have driven investors away with many businesses closing down leading to loss of jobs.

“Our administration revived Ire Burnt Bricks Industry, brought back Ikogosi Warm Spring, enterprise grew in Ekiti during my time. When I came in, the only two prominent hotels are Pathfinder and Fountain and there was deluge of people coming.

“I spoke with all these people and they brought their investment here but when I left, they all regretted but today, GTB is gone, Coca Cola is gone, Ire Burnt Bricks is struggling and Gossy Water is dead because Fayose’s government is anti-investment.

“IGR rose to N600m before I left office as we declared what came in monthly but no one has heard of Ekiti IGR since I left.”

Fayemi said all what he did with Ekiti funds during his first term in office are there for all to see as his government paid stipends to aged people, youth volunteers, constructed roads, palaces, markets, civic centres, town halls and other key projects.

He assured that the APC administration apart from putting an end to the suffering of Ekiti people will execute policies that will boost their standard of living.

  • Sunshine Ilesanmi Anifowose: The dossier of a flying public servant @40

In his work of Arts, a British Scholar, Dominic Walters opined that “Nothing is impossible and unachievable on the surface of earth if there’s still a life in a man and the man is determined, granular, unwavering, meticulous, thorough, methodical, conscientious, diligent, industrious and assiduous.”

In his book titled “Success Secret of a Flying Pilot” which chronicle the triumph of a Public Servant in his City of Birmingham who suffered defeat in all ramifications at adolescent till age 40 but refused to buckle, the award winning Author used the words of God in the holy book of Genesis to buttress his affirmation, stating that no man is born without a plus of talent, goodness, substance, class and endowment.

Walters said for a man to excel, he must be a man who doesn’t take no for an answer. He must be resolute and ruthless and pursue his target by all means necessary devoid of illegality, positing that for those in business, morality is a must to be jettisoned for wealth to be accumulated.

He believed that posterity and history will be kind to only those who remained truthful, humble, meek, unassuming, unpretentious, undemanding and modest both in the periods of dearth and affluence.

The content of the 96-page book which i read three years ago reminds me of the pleasurable life of Sunshine Ilesanmi Anifowose, a young man from the innate hill of Ado-Ekiti. Like the Pilot in Dominic Walters’ book, Anifowose clocks 40 on the surface of earth today. How Time Flies!!!

However, unlike the Street Beggar in Dominic Walters’ Book who rose to become the Pilot of one of the country’s ex-Prime Ministers, the man Anifowose was born into a middle class and fantastically comfortable family.

At age 15, he drove his father’s 504 Saloon Car and Mercedes-Benz 1990 Car which were one of the few then in Ado-Ekiti. Together with his siblings, Anifowose consumed what he desired. He was a man envied by many but humility which was a virtue born with him never allowed him derailed. He is a man of modesty and reticence.

Born on June 8th 1978 into the family of late Apostle Joseph Anifowose in Ado-Ekiti, he attended St. Joseph Nursery and Primary School, Ado-Ekiti. After his primary education, he proceeded to the prestigious Christ School, Ado-Ekiti where he was groomed in learning and in character.

In 1998, he was admitted into the University of Ado-Ekiti now Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti to study Geology and graduated with Honours. He also bagged a Masters of Business Administration from the same Institution in 2012, a feat that has helped him in no small measure on the management of business and Personnel.

Anifowose has been an Entrepreneur since age of 18, a legacy he inherited from his late Father. At age 19, he successfully set up the structures that propelled the take off of the defunct renowned Iyaniwura Bread, owned by the late former Finance Minister and Traditional ruler of Iloko-Ijesha, Osun Staate, Oba Frederick Olashore.

The experience that he gained during his one year compulsory National Youth Service at Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State between September 2002 to August 2003, though memorable, but propelled him never to look for white collar jobs after serving his father land.

On his return to Ado-Ekiti in 2004 from Delta, he incorporated “Sunshine Confectionaries”, a brand that has now catapulted him from a rejected to a chief corners stone. His “Sunshine Bread” is among the most patronized in Ekiti State today.

At age 26, he was already an employer of 36 people in his bakery situated at Odundun Street, Dalimore, Ado-Ekiti. At age 30, Anifowose had 62 people on his payroll when many of his contemporaries were wallowing from one firms to another in search for non-existing jobs. Today, his brands which included the fastest growing “African Kitchen” in Ado-Ekiti, have over 80 employees.

A man of vision who did not allow his agrarian environment to kill his vision, at a time, the man Ilesanmi who had been consuming what he so desires was forced by men of the underworld to start eating whatever he could lay his hands upon. That was his experience when he lost his father who was gruesomely murdered in his sleep 21 years ago in Ado-Ekiti.

The rumblings in the wind as Anifowose tasted hunger were visible to the blind and audible to the deaf. He felt all was over but like a valiant soldier without a dint of fear, he matches on. He re-event, re-plan and re-strategize and God in his infinite mercy crowned his efforts.

Anifowose is cool, calm and he talks less which makes him hear more; he looks less which makes him sees more. All these attributes attracted Anifowose to Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State.

His public service appointment was the first to be announced on July 6th 2014 by Governor-elect, Ayo Fayose as Personal Assistant, Administrations and Special Duties, a position he retained when the governor was inaugurated on 16th October 2014 with the Directorate of Human-capital Development popularly known as “Stomach Infrastructure” as an addendum.

Every Christmas, Easter, Sallah, Month end and New Year are always busy for Anifowose’s Directorate of Stomach Infrastructure. The rate at which his name is being chorused by the poorest of the poor and the downtrodden goes beyond the cosmos.

Every where he walks, he does so imperially and majestically with the crowd of motley accord at his back. At a time, he was nick-named the Atayese of Osoko Kingdom. Anifowose is Anifowose because his name is Sunshine.

An Associate Member of the British GOWAC Institute of Business and Administration, his leadership qualities booms daily to the admiration of his boss, Ayo Fayose, a populist that today sets the pace for the self-acclaimed philosopher kings in the Nigeria political firmament.

To say that his Stomach Infrastructure Initiative sustains the popularity of the Fayose administration in the grassroots is an understatement. He gives without a pause and like the clapping of a mimosa, his generosity is indisputable.

He has been honoured within and outside Ekiti State for times without number. In recognition of his contributions to the development of humanity, the congress of Ekiti Students in the University of Lagos in 2015 declared him as Omoluabi Per Excellence of the Year.

In 2016, the leadership of Junior Chambers International (JCI) honoured him with Youth Icon Award in recognition of his leadership qualities. In 2017, Anifowose was honoured by the Student Parliament of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba, Lagos as an Icon of Human-capital Development.

A writer with zeal, the board of trustee of the Nigerian Literary Union (NLU) earlier this year, honoured Anifowose as Life Membership of the organization in recognition of his writing prowess which is hidden to many people. Same this year, the Students Union Government (SUG) of his alma-mata, the Ekiti State University announced him as Ambassador of the year 2017.

Sometime, his quietness may annoy you but never mind, he is just being careful not to rush into taking a decision. Without being immodest, let me say very expressly that a man that can manage a combative Ayo Fayose can manage any character anywhere.

At 40, Anifowose is a hero who deserves every accolade a hero deserves. I thank God for him and his wife. Many had died but he’s still alive doing wonders. No one knows how mountain absorbs the heat of scotching sun. God can not be questioned and his words are irrevocable

  • Ekiti 2018: APC slams Jonathan for warning Buhari not to rig poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has said former President Goodluck Jonathan was not fit to demand for the conduct of a credible governorship poll on July 14.

The party said Jonathan lacked the moral justification to advise President Muhammadu Buhari to resist the temptation to deploy instruments of coercion in favour of his party (APC) at the governorship election.

It also criticized Jonathan for describing the Ado-Ekiti flyover built by Governor Ayo Fayose at the whopping cost of N17b as the best of its type in Nigeria is a slap on the faces of Ekiti people and reasonable
    Nigerians in general.

The former President was in Ado-Ekiti at the weekend to commission Fajuyi-Ojumose flyover in the state capital where he described the project as the best in Nigeria.

The APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement on Monday accused Jonathan of affront, hypocrisy and dishonesty in his call on President Buhari to ensure free governorship election on July 14.

He said: “We had thought that Jonathan would behave like a true statesman and apologise to Ekiti people over the criminal taking over of government he supervised in 2014 when he unleashed soldiers, DSS and police to chase away opposition to the bush while several opposition leaders were illegally clamped into detention to disenfranchise the opposition party in the election that returned his stooge to power.

“We condemn this unconscionable conduct by the former President who unleashed a horrendous electoral heist on Ekiti people, but who now turns around to demand for free and fair poll he could not give.

“His endorsement of Fayose after he had put Ekiti State in N56b debts and workers owed between six and 10 months’ salary arrears while Ekiti State remained at where it was in 2014 in infrastructure development is also unfortunate.

“Ekiti people will not be deceived and defrauded again after 2014 criminal takeover of government supervised by Jonathan, as Ekiti people and workers in particular live in hunger over unpaid salaries, and they have vowed to give their votes to our party with records of achievements and honesty in running a transparent government.”

Olatunbosun alleged that the cost of the flyover which was awarded N5.9 billion was jerked up to N17 billion, an act he insisted Jonathan should condemn rather than praising.

Olatunbosun added: “It is unfortunate and irresponsible to hide under partisanship to lend support for a clear case of fraud in the 800m one-lane flyover built on a dry land at a whopping cost of N17b as if the former President never supervised the construction of better flyovers at lower rates when he was president.

“Even though Fayose at various times had claimed that the flyover at Fajuyi and Ojumose stretch of the state capital is 1.3km and 1.5km, the truth is that that stretch of road is 800m and it cannot stand the standard of a better flyover in Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State, built at a lower cost by Governor Ibikunle Amosun, but unfortunately the former President gave a stamp of approval to a clear case of fraud in a flyover that was first awarded at the cost of N5.9b without the Tenders Board’s approval but later reviewed upward single-handedly by the governor to its present cost of N17b.

“It is also immoral to praise Fayose for diverting bailout, Paris Club refund and Budget Support Facility, all approved to pay workers’ salaries, to build a flyover at over-bloated cost of N17b awarded to Fayose’s friends’ companies outside the state after deceiving contractors of Ekiti origin during his campaigns to patronize them exclusively for all his projects.”

  • Special adviser quits Fayose’s govt

    Another Fayose’s aide resigns

Special Adviser to Governor Ayo Fayose on Cultural Matters, Alhaji Ademola Bello, on Monday tendered his resignation from office.

Bello in his resignation letter dated 21st May, 2018 said he was quitting Fayose’s government “on personal grounds.”

Our reporter sighted a copy of Bello’s resignation letter which was acknowledged by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Dupe Alade

He joined the increasing list of officials quitting the Fayose administration for various reasons.

They include former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Ekiti State University, Prince Dayo Adeyeye; former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi;  former Director General/Special Adviser Bureau of Public Procurement, Chief Segun Akinwumi; former Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr. Deji Adesua; former Board Member representing Ekiti at Odua Investment, Dr. Sikiru Lawal, just to mention a few.

Bello was Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters where he wielded enormous influence and was at a time the highest ranking Muslim in the administration.

He was later moved to Bureau of Culture and Tourism. Bello was among the Muslims in government considered as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) deputy governorship candidate but the lot fell on fellow Ado indigene, Mr. Deji Ogunsakin.

His resignation letter reads: “I hereby wish to inform Your Excellency of my desire to resign my appointment as a Special Adviser under your administration forthwith on personal grounds.

“Permit me to express my profound appreciation for the opportunity given to me to serve in various capacities in the course of this administration.

“It is my fervent prayer that Allah in His infinite mercies shall continue to direct our noble course.”

  • Fayose, FUOYE VC trade words over alleged “rigging” plot

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Kayode Soremekun on Friday traded words over alleged plot to rig the July 14 governorship election.

Fayose alleged that Soremekun has lent himself to be used by ruling party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by recruiting students of his institution to serve as ad hoc staff at the poll rather than youth corps members.

The governor alleged that Soremekun is a card-carrying member of the APC and a close ally of the party’s governorship candidate in the forthcoming election, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. He alleged that the VC had rigged elections for the APC in the past.

Fayose who spoke with reporters in Ado-Ekiti on Friday alleged that over 2,000 FUOYE students had been registered as ad hoc staff under Soremekun’s watch and allegedly ordered to supply bank details of their close relations so that payments would not be directly linked to them.

But Soremekun who denied involvement in any plot to rig the forthcoming election described Fayose’s allegation as a “blatant falsehood” said INEC is the agency in charge of recruiting ad hoc staff for the purpse of elections.

The Ogun State born university administrator who also denied being an APC card-carrying member said this would not be the first time that Fayose had attempted to blackmail him.

The FUOYE boss said Ekiti governor had attacked him over his refusal to do assist his (Fayose’s) party (PDP) at the September 2016 Edo State governorship election where he (Soremekun) served as the chief returning officer.

Soremekun also recalled that Fayose had cried to the whole world that he (Soremekun) would be used as the chief returning officer for the November 2016 Ondo State governorship election and released his phone number to the public to occupy his line adding that he did not serve in that capacity eventually as the governor had alleged.

Fayose said: “The idea behind this plot is to recruit APC members from neighbouring States, arm them with FUOYE students Identity Cards and use them as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers to perfect the planned rigging of the election. This will fail.”

“Today, we are beginning to receive signals to the effect that clandestine moves are being made to subvert the will of Ekiti people.

With the failure of their “Ondo Option”, other evil means are now being devised.

“Despite that we have over 9,000 Youth Corps members in Ekiti State and it has been the general practice to engage the NYSC members in elections across the country, the APC in collusion with INEC have asked that students of FUOYE be recruited as INEC ad-hoc staff for the election, instead of youth corps members.

“We are in possession of an Internal Memorandum from the office of the Dean of Students Affairs, FUOYE seeking registration of students of the University as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers for the Election.

“As I speak, over 2,000 supposed FUOYE students have been registered; with a curious condition that they should provide Bank Account details of their close relations, apparently to avoid tracing any payment into their own accounts.

“The question is; with over 9,000 Youth Corps members in Ekiti State, what is the need for FUOYE students in an election that is holding in less than 2,200 polling units?

“Our counsel is that parents, guardians and families of FUOYE students should prevail on their wards to shun this Greek gift and avoid being used by desperate politicians.

“INEC, too, must come clean on this. The electoral umpire must tel the public the rationale behind the plot to jettison Youth Corps members for supposed FUOYE students.”

Soremekun fired back: “What Governor Ayodele Fayose has accused me of is a blatant falsehood. In a post colonial setting like Nigeria and especially Ekiti State, elections are like war and in any war, the truth is usually the first casualty.

“Having said that, am I the one to recruit students for elections or the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“I am not in charge of recruiting adhoc staff for INEC, they are the one in charge of that. Politics is the only industry in Ekiti land here.

“I also heard that governor Fayose said that two days ago (Wednesday) I was in Abuja with ex Governor Fayemi on this same matter.

“But again, I have concrete proof to the effect that two days ago I was in Oye trying to put down the fire occasioned by student’s unrest. You know about this and it was even in the papers.

“So, how could I have been in Oye and in Abuja at the same time. Let me also say that this is not the first time that Governor Fayose would be treating me like this.

“In the run up to the last Ondo governorship election, you will recall that Governor Fayose said I would be the returning officer foe INEC wanted for the election and that I had a rigging template because I was the returning officer in Edo State.

“It is true I was the returning officer then but the loser of that Edo election went to the court, the tribunal, Appeal and Supreme Courts and he lost.

“As much as possible politicians should not try to drag me to their mess. Governor Fayose will win or lose based on his prior performances in office.”

  • Ekiti 2018: Muslims hail Fayose on choice of Olusola’s running mate

Muslims in Ekiti State have commended Governor Ayo Fayose to supporting the choice of one of them, Kazeem Ayodeji Ogunsakin, as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) deputy governorship candidate.

The Grand Imam of Ekiti State and Chief Imam of Ado-Ekiti, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello, said Fayose has fulfilled the desires of the Muslims on the choice of Ogunsakin as the running mate to the PDP candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

The cleric spoke at a rally organized for Olusola and Ogunsakin on Tuesday by the Muslim Community on the endorsement of the latter by Fayose and PDP for the July 14 governorship poll at Fajuyi Park Arena in Ado-Ekiti.

Kewulere, who is also the President of the League of Imams and Alfas in Southwest, Edo and Delta States said fayose has granted three out of four requests put to him by the Muslims in the state.

Read Also: Fayose is very abusive, lacks decorum, says Oyegun

Ogunsakin promised to justify the confidence reposed in him by the governor and the Muslim Community and boasted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be defeated at the governorship poll.

Olusola said Kewulere was happy because one of his heart desires has been fulfilled. He also hailed Fayose for “allowing God’s will to prevail.”

The cleric said: “We asked for four things from the governor snf he has done three things now; this third is so surprising. We had told him that since he already has supported a Christian governorship candidate, we want a deputy  and we have been expecting.

“We have said any party that fails to choose one of us as deputy governor, we will not support. But Governor Fayose has chosen one of us, Kazeem.

“Any other party that calls us, we will answer them, we are their fathers but we are not politicians. Governor Fayose we salute and appreciate you. This project of yours shall be successful.”

Fayose replied: “I thank you for acknowledging  that Fayose is a promise keeper. Fayose, a promise keeper, has kept this promise and if truly you want a Muslim as deputy governor, you must ensure that your people vote for Ogunsakin.

“Pray to God to make this project successful; we have done our part. We have placed Ogunsakin at a position you all Muslims can help him.

“I prayed to God about it and asked from God. And he confirmed Ogunsakin just as he gave me Prof Eleka (Olusola).”

  • Fayose reacts to Adeyeye’s exit from PDP

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has reacted to the decision of a governorship aspirant, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, to leave the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Fayose said: “We appreciate him for the time he has spent , for participating in the primaries . PDP has demonstrated to the whole world that we can offer a level playing ground.

“We have given a level playing ground to everybody and to every election, there will be losers and winners.

“I am Peter the rock nobody can fight me. I have given everybody a level playing ground which actually no sitting governor will do.

“Having done the best in these circumstances, I leave everything to God. But I want to assure you that his departure will make no difference.

“To our teeming party members, I advise that this party has lost elections two times before. One to ex-governor Adebayo and another when Fayemi became governor. The party is more important we should stay together to win the election.”

  • Ekiti 2018: Drama as APC exco clears fetish objects from secretariat

Members write Al-Makura, kick against direct primary

There was drama at Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday as the Olajide Awe-led exco resumed office two days after scores of party members invaded the place and shut it down.

Their supporters removed a big pot of sacrifice and palm fronds placed at the gate of the secretariat. They also smeared the ground with salt to ‘neutralise’ them and threw the fetish objects on the main road.

Addressing a news conference in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, Awe said the rain that fell on the day the fetish objects was placed at the secretariat had “turned the evil on those who put it there.”

Motorists and motorcyclists avoided the objects placed in the centre of the road.

Some party members stormed the secretariat and claimed o have dissolved the Awe-led exco and ‘installed’ a caretaker committee led by APC Chairman in Ise/Orun Local Government, Mr. Kayode Egunjobi, to run the affairs for three months.

They accused Awe of collecting a bribe of N75 million from Governor Ayo Fayose, bungling the May 5 primary, favouring a particular aspirant, alleged embezzlement of party funds, among others.

Addressing a news conference shortly after regaining office, Awe said the action of some leaders and members who invaded the secretariat and ‘sacked’ the duly elected exco constituted a breach of party constitution and gross indiscipline.

The party chair explained that he and his exco went to the APC National Secretariat in Abuja to brief the national leaders on the crisis adding that a Disciplinary Committee has been set up to investigate those directly and remotely linked with the ‘coup.’

Awe said his exco also met with the Chairman of the Ekiti Governorship Primary Electoral Committee, Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on the modalities for the conduct of a fresh primary.

In a related development, some leaders of the Ekiti APC hve kicked against the use of direct primary for the conduct of the rescheduled primary slated for Friday.

In a letter addressed to Al-Makura dated May 9 a copy of which was made available to our reporter on Wednesday, said the use of direct primary was against the principle of fairness and justice to change the rules in the middle of the game.

The letter was also copied to the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and the National Working Committee (NWC).

According to the letter signed by Mr. Samuel Abejide, Comrade Ade Ajayi and Mrs. Moji Fafure, under the aegis of Ekiti Concerned Delegates and Leaders, they insisted that any aspirant who is not ready for the election can withdraw honourably from the race rather than “suggesting ridiculous options that will lead to nowhere but doom.”

They also warned against the use of Option A4 which they described as “another danger for the party” as it would give opportunity to sponsored thugs to disrupt coupled with the fact that it is cumbersome and will not be possible to mobilize human and material resources within the time available for the conduct of primaries.

The letter read in part: “The direct primaries option is a flagrant denial of the rights of the delegates who have been empowered through electoral process by the financial members of their wards otherwise called Ward Congress to vote for the governorship aspirant of their choice in primary elections to elect party’s candidates.

“The delegates so empowered have not relinquished this right and mandate of the people, and so denying them this voting right which has commenced on May 5 before the process was aborted , is tantamount to disenfranchisement.

“We are aware that the real motive of the aspirants in suggesting this option is to give them an ample opportunity to finally disrupt the exercise by deploying thugs and cultists who would abort the exercise and cause a stalemate. The result of this is that APC will not have a candidate to present till the May 15 deadline would lapse.

“We wish to state clearly that we are ready for a repeat of the delegate primaries and we say no to direct primaries because it is a recipe for crisis which has been predetermined by aspirants who are not ready for any election but want the whole process stalemated because they have ganged up against a particular aspirant.

“We wish to advise the aspirants who are clamouring for direct primaries to brace up for a repeat of the aborted delegates primaries on Friday because the direct primary option is not feasible and it is not in the best interest of democracy, Ekiti APC and Ekiti people generally

  • 2019: PDP broadens consultations to challenge APC

According to him, response from the various stakeholders has been encouraging, adding that the need to rescue the country from the grip of the APC was an enormous challenge.

“Majority of Nigerians who are disillusioned about the state of affairs in the last three years, are excited that we are trying to get it right as we remain the last hope for our democracy”, Secondus said.

The party chair, who spoke at the 79th edition of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP, commended some elder statesmen who have raised their voices against what he described as the misrule of the APC.

The chairman said, “We commend our elder statesmen and other patriotic Nigerians who have spoken up on the urgent need to rid the country of the current bad APC government and enthrone a government that will serve our needs.

“Because of this challenge, we have taken it upon ourselves as the leading opposition party to broaden our scope, open our doors and allow ideas to flow in for a more robust democratic development.

“We therefore, invite our brothers, sisters, youths and women from other political parties in this platform to join us to rescue our country that is in distress, socially, politically, economically and security wise.

“In this country today over 3.1 million citizens are languishing in various IDP camps across the country, yet we are not at war with any country.

“Our consultations have taken us to meet with various interest groups who are willing to do business with us and I can report to you that it has been very fruitful.

“We expect in coming days to have a broader political family working dedicatedly to rescue this democracy and our beloved country from the hands of APC”.

Echoing the party chairman, Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, said so far consultations with the various groups have proved useful.

He hinted that a broader platform will be raised in the days ahead, with the view to wrestling power from the APC administration, particularly at the centre.

“Former presidents and former leaders of Nigeria are in unison to make sure that come 2019 a fresh and new government is formed for the interest of our nation”, Ekweremadu added.
