Abandoned road sparks outrage in community

Residents of Alaja/Olayemi Road in Ayobo-Ipaja in Lagos State have deplored abandonment of their road, which has been under construction for more than two decades, lamenting its impact on their health, livelihoods and daily activities.

They protested to  the LCDA Chair, Lukman Agbaje, urging him to complete the project.

According to the protesters, the deplorable state of the road has made homes inaccessible, damaged vehicles, disrupted businesses and posed challenges for the elderly, pupils and the physically challenged.

Speaking for the community, a former Chairperson of a CDA, said residents had exhausted all options.

She said: “I have been here for over 20 years. This road has been like this

“Because of the condition of the road, we had to form a forum of about seven CDAs. We have been fighting for completion of this road since work stopped at Alaja.”

She explained that the road was part of the 114 roads initiated during the administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in 2016, but construction stopped midway about 10 years ago.

“When we didn’t see any intervention, we maintained the road ourselves, spending millions every year,” she added. “But now we are fed up and frustrated. People pay taxes, students cannot move when it rains, cars get damaged, the elderly cannot walk and the physically challenged struggle to get into their houses.”

She noted that residents had written petitions to state agencies, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and their representatives at the House of Assembly, without success.

“We contacted the new chairman and he promised to fix the road. He said he would do a palliative within two to three weeks, but it has been almost four months. All that was done was the dumping of hardcore and sand, which made the road worse,” she said.

Also speaking, 70-year-old Reverend Nat Atanda Olajide described the situation as inhumane.

“I came here about 19 years ago. It was bad then, but far better than what we are experiencing now,” he said. “Many of us have cars but cannot use them. I am not supposed to be standing here under this sun.”

Another resident, Babatunde Abraham, said the protest was not aimed at embarrassing the government but to seek urgent intervention.

“We were happy when the local government started the road, but they stopped after the first phase and never returned,” he said.

“The former governor even came to inaugurate the uncompleted road. We are calling on the state government to take over this project because it may be beyond the capacity of the LCDA.”

He noted that the road serves as a major link to Igando and could help ease traffic on adjoining routes.

“We are Lagosians. We pay our taxes and we vote. All we ask is for this road to be fixed,” he said.

The residents appealed to the state and local governments to urgently intervene and bring an end to what they described as over 20 years of neglect.

The Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Dr Lukmon Agbaje, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-focused governance and sustainable development as he marked his first 100 days in office with the grand finale of the “Ijoba Irorun” celebration.

The event, held at the Council Secretariat, Ayobo-Ipaja, brought together traditional rulers, elected officials, community leaders, market associations, youth groups, security agencies, religious bodies and residents, who gathered to reflect on the administration’s early achievements and its vision for the future.

Agbaje described the occasion as a testament to purposeful leadership and collective progress, noting that the past 100 days have laid a solid foundation for transforming Ayobo-Ipaja into a modern, prosperous and peaceful community.

According to him, the administration hit the ground running in the area of works and infrastructure, with the rehabilitation of seven roads across all wards. He added that Area Offices and Primary Health Centres were rehabilitated and furnished, while ten transformer power stations were distributed to improve electricity supply. Three logistics buses were also procured to enhance operational efficiency within the council.

In the health sector, the chairman highlighted the conduct of a free health mission and improved supply of drugs and medical equipment to Primary Health Centres, in line with the administration’s resolve to make quality healthcare accessible to all residents.

He also commended the Legislative Arm of the LCDA for its proactive oversight, particularly its regular monitoring of health facilities, engagement with health workers and feedback mechanisms, which have helped to improve service delivery.

On environmental sanitation, Agbaje said the council carried out the clearing of refuse black spots and road medians, desilting of drainages to prevent flooding and inaugurated an Environmental Task Force to strengthen enforcement. The enforcement drive, he said, has also boosted the LCDA’s internally generated revenue, alongside sustained community sensitisation on proper waste management.

“Education featured prominently in the achievements recorded, with the distribution of 300 free GCE forms to indigent pupils, provision of free tutorial classes, hosting of the 2025 Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition, and distribution of school bags and exercise books under the Back-to-School Programme. The school infrastructure upgrading is ongoing across the LCDA,” he said, adding “under agriculture and food security, the administration rolled out food palliative distribution to households under the Ijoba Irorun welfare programme, supported local farmers with farmland and participated in World Food Day activities to promote nutrition and sustainability.

Widows under the Widows Association Programme (WAPA) now receive monthly stipends, while women were sponsored to participate in COWLSO leadership programmes.

“To strengthen governance efficiency, the council procured laptops and printers for key departments and improved its administrative record-keeping and communication systems, marking the beginning of a more digitally driven administration. The administration also promoted tourism, culture and community engagement through the sponsorship of Isese Day celebrations and support for traditional rulers’ anniversaries across the LCDA.”

Agbaje unveiled ambitious short and long-term plans, including expanded road construction and drainage projects, stronger healthcare systems, larger empowerment programmes for youths, women and artisans, enhanced security, improved school infrastructure, deeper ICT integration and wider business and economic opportunities.

He thanked the people of Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, the councillors, management staff, party leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, NGOs, youth groups and market leaders for their cooperation and support throughout the first 100 days.

“As we mark 100 days of Ijoba Irorun, let us renew our collective commitment to a greater Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA.  By the grace of God, the strength of our unity and the determination of this administration, Ayobo-Ipaja will continue to rise,” he said.

Ayobo-Ipaja council boss warns against illegal waste disposal

The Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Otunba Oladipupo Oluwaloni, has taken decisive action in the fight against indiscriminate waste disposal, leading a large-scale environmental sanitation exercise across key areas of the LCDA.

In an interview with The Nation, Otunba Oluwaloni stated that the initiative stemmed from continued non-compliance by residents despite previous stakeholder engagements.

“When I was the acting chairman, we organised a stakeholders’ meeting where we urged residents not to dump refuse on the roads. Unfortunately, many have refused to comply, which is why the executive and legislative arms of the LCDA decided to take matters into our own hands,” he said.

The clean-up exercise, which kicked off at Church Bus-stop in Ipaja and ended at Ijamoney, involved over seven trucks and the active participation of local authorities, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ayobo/Ipaja.

He said there’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with community leaders to strategize on sustained compliance.

“I’m a good manager, and I believe we can manage ourselves. But this unhealthy behavior must stop,” he warned

The Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA) yesterday refuted the recent allegations of fraudulent transactions amounting to N7.2 million as reported in some media outlets.

A statement by the council’s Public Affairs Officer, Abidemi Gbinigie, said the claims were misleading and do not reflect the true state of events.

She said: “We wish to clarify that the funds in question were legitimate disbursements approved by the Chairman, Chief Bola Shobowale, for the following:  N5,964,102 for political office holders’ salaries; N1,141,140 for the salaries of the chieftaincy council, and  52,500 for adult literacy teachers staff salaries.

“These transactions were processed with the full knowledge and approval of the Chairman, who personally signed off on the payment documents. It is also important to note that these payments were necessitated, ensuring that all council workers and political office holders received their due salaries without undue delay.

According to her, ”The report alleging that the Chairman’s signature was forged is entirely false and malicious. Contrary to claims of her prolonged absence, Chief Bola Shobowale was active in her official duties as recently as October 4, 2024, when she chaired the Monthly Community Development Committee (CDC) Stakeholders Meeting. The Chairman has been away for few weeks, and there is no leadership vacuum in the council.”

The council, she said, remains committed to upholding the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability in all its dealings.

“We urge the public to disregard these baseless allegations, which are clearly aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the council and its leadership,” she stated.
